‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ Officially Begins Production
Just got home from the Alice in Chains show, sorry for the delay, but below you’ll now find the official release. Production has officially begin in Toronto, Canada for Screen Gems and Constantin’s Resident Evil: Afterlife, which is to be directed by Paul W.S. Anderson from his own screenplay. The international release it confirms that Milla Jovovich will return as Alice, with Ali Larter returning as Claire Redfield and Spencer Locke (Monster House) as K-Mart. Boris Kodjoe, Wentworth Miller, Kim Coates (Silent Hill, Skinwalkers) and Shawn Roberts (Diary of the Dead, Skinwalkers) also join the cast. The fourth installment is to be released in 3D on August 27, 2010. No story details were revealed, however it’s rumored to take us to Tokyo. Fingers crossed on that.
Screen Gems and Constantin Film announced today that “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” the next installment in the widely successful “Resident Evil” film franchise has begun production in Toronto, Canada. The fourth film, which will be shot and released in 3-D, is a first in the “Resident Evil” film franchise. Most of the key creative players, who turned the “Resident Evil” film franchise into a global phenomenon, will be reprising their roles in “Afterlife”.
Actress Milla Jovovich returns as the zombie-fighting heroine Alice. Ali Larter reprises her role as Claire Redfield from “Resident Evil: Extinction”. Spencer Locke, who played K-Mart in “Extinction,” is also set to return. New to the film franchise is leading man Wentworth Miller, who has signed on as Chris Redfield – Claire’s brother and a popular character from the game series. Shawn Roberts will take over the role of Alice’s nemesis Wesker. Boris Kodjoe and Kim Coates have also been cast.
Filmmaker Paul W. S. Anderson is back in his triple threat capacity as writer, director and producer. Anderson wrote, produced and directed the first “Resident Evil” (2002) and wrote and produced the sequels, “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” (2004) and “Resident Evil: Extinction” (2007). It’s been eight years since Ari Aster came onto the scene and helped usher in a new wave of horror with Hereditary, one of the rare horror movies from the past ten years that still seems to come up in conversation every single week. And it’s back in the conversation this week, with Ari Aster revealing at an event that he’s already written a prequel to Hereditary!
Ari Aster was on hand at the American Cinematheque for Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair last week, a Los Angeles festival that screened all of Aster’s movies to date. The website Gold Derby reports that Aster revealed the Hereditary prequel script during a Q&A at the event, and you can watch the full Q&A conversation below for confirmation on the website’s report.
“I wrote a prequel to this,” Aster told the crowd, referring to Hereditary. “It never feels like the right time to do it. It’s a prequel, not a sequel so I don’t know where this goes.”
Would a potential Hereditary prequel dig deeper into the mythology of demon king Paimon? Unfortunately, Aster provides no further details on his prequel approach at this time.
Aster said of Hereditary during the same Q&A, “I was just trying to make a really good horror movie.” I think most horror fans would agree that he more than accomplished that goal, and the past eight years have proven that Hereditary is an enduring classic of its generation.

“In that familiarity lies the uncanny, ready to rear its ugly head and force us to confront thoughts and horrors laying dormant and clawing at our psyche,” Breton continued his 5th anniversary celebration of Hereditary. “And it doesn’t matter if it’s been five or fifty years. These horrors are always there, as we become pawns in its horrible, hopeless machine.”
Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, and Milly Shapiro star in Hereditary. In the film, “A grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.”
