[2012 HORROR MOVIE PREVIEW] SONY PICTURES

Bloody Disgusting 2012 Horror Movie Preview

Last year Sony Pictures/Columbia/Screen Gems released a slew of mediocre genre titles from Straw Dogs to Priest, Battle Los Angeles and The Roommate. 2012 looks a bit of the same with a few new additions.

Next year kicks off with Underworld: Awakening, the fourth film in the franchise, the first in 3-D. It looks like a strong departure from the previous titles, which is mildly exciting. The buzz behind Ghost Rider is beyond negative, while Men in Black 3 looks like more of the same, which isn’t necessarily bad thing — it’s consistent.

Read on to see the full 2012 slate and watch for a new studio each day until, well, we run out!

Underworld: Awakening 3D (January 20, Sony Screen Gems)

Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D (February 17, Columbia Pictures)

In the successor to the worldwide hit ‘Ghost Rider,’ Johnny – still struggling with his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter – is hiding out in a remote part of Eastern Europe when he is recruited by a secret sect of the church to save a young boy (Fergus Riordan) from the devil (Ciaran Hinds). At first, Johnny is reluctant to embrace the power of the Ghost Rider, but it is the only way to protect the boy – and possibly rid himself of his curse forever.

Men in Black III 3D (May 25, Columbia Pictures)

Men in Black 3
The film will use a time travel element that moves the action from contemporary back to 1969. Brolin will play the younger version of Jones’s Agent Kay character.

Total Recall (August 3, Columbia Pictures)

The movie ditches the Martian storyline from the original pic and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell), a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy — although he doesn’t know for which side.

Resident Evil: Retribution 3D (September 14, Sony Screen Gems)

Urb plays the leader of the Resistance, who teams with Jovovich’s Alice character as she battles the Umbrella Corporation and the swarm of undead.

Hotel Transylvania 3D (September 21, Sony Screen Gems)

Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s (Sandler) lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free from meddling from the human world. But here’s a little known fact about Dracula: he is not only the Prince of Darkness; he is also a dad. Over-protective of his teenage daughter, Mavis, Dracula fabricates tales of elaborate dangers to dissuade her adventurous spirit. As a haven for Mavis, he opens the Hotel Transylvania, where his daughter and some of the world’s most famous monsters – Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more – can kick back in safety and peace. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but his world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.

Looper (September 28, Columbia Pictures)

Looper is centered on a group of killers who send bodies of their victims back in time.

The Raid (April, Sony)

A swat team is trapped in a rundown apartment block filled with heavily armed drug dealers and killers.

Detention (TBD, Sony Pictures)

Written and directed by Joseph Kahn, “Detention” tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. The road to graduation is never an easy one, but it’s further complicated for these students by the arrival of a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. The only ones who can stop the killer are a handful of students, but they’ll have to cut out of detention if they’re to stand a chance at saving the world.
