Our 5 Favorite Possessed Leading Ladies!!!

Hammer Films’ The Quiet Ones hits theaters on April 25th, and looks to continue the winning streak they established with The Woman In Black and Let Me In.

In the film, “Tucked away in an estate outside of London, Professor Coupland along with a team of university students conduct an “experiment” on Jane Harper, a young girl who harbors unspeakable secrets. What dark forces they uncover are more terrifying than any of them expected. Inspired by true events, the film stars Jared Harris (Mad Men and Sherlock Homes: A Game of Shadows), Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel), and is directed by John Pogue from a screenplay by Craig Rosenberg and Oren Moverman and John Pogue, and based on a screenplay by Tom de Ville.

To celebrate the film’s release – and ponder what exactly is happening to Cooke’s Jane Harper – we decided to take a sponsored look back at some iconic corollaries from horror’s past.

Head below for Our 5 Favorite Possessed Leading Ladies!!!

5: Katie – Paranormal Activity

While Katie might not be the most visually frightening of our possessed leading ladies, she has by far the most franchise staying power. From getting possessed in PA1 to running around snapping necks in PA4, she’s actually been in all five movies (including The Marked Ones) at this point. And you can bet your bottom dollar she’ll be in this year’s PA5. With all of this demonic activity, Katie hasn’t been Katie for a long time.

4: Linda – Evil Dead II

Denise Bixler’s poor Linda doesn’t get an awful lot of screen time, but she definitely makes the most of what she’s given. Not only does she get possessed, have her head cut off and get buried in a shallow grave – she’s able to reincarnate herself and dance in the moonlight before coming back for a chainsaw attack. Linda’s got moxie.

3: Emily Rose – The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

Not only did this 2005 film give us a pre “Dexter” Jennifer Carpenter, it firmly put future Sinister and Deliver Us From Evil director Scott Derrickson on the map. Almost as important? This is the movie that gets to yell “first” when it comes to the increased limbering up of our possessed subjects. If your exorcism movie has a yoga pose in it, you might just be ripping off this seminal film.

2: Rosemary – Demons

Lamberto Bava’s Demons is an insanely fun ride, and one of my favorite characters from the film is Geretta Giancarlo’s (aka Geretta Geretta) Rosemary. Her transformation is so sudden and her demonized presence so uniquely lustful of carnage it’s hard to get her out of your mind.

1: Regan – The Exorcist

Like there could be any other. When Linda Blair’s Regan fell under the possession of the demon Pazuzu film history was made with one of the most striking visual transformations in history. Not only does Regan not look like herself, not only does she levitate – she is utterly profane in every conceivable way. It also doesn’t hurt that William Friedkin concocted an all out masterpiece in this 1973 film, one of the best horror movies of all time.

  • Jai Schuler

I would have chosen Angela from Night of the Demons over Emily Rose.

    • EvanDickson

      She’s pretty great too!

      • Jai Schuler

Picking just 5 is a bitch.

    • TrowaS

Came down here to the comments to say the same thing! Hell yeah!

  • M M

I would have gone with Nell from Last Exorcism over Katie. Katie is a tragic “actress”.

    • EvanDickson

Last Exorcism 2 killed my enthusiasm for that franchise. Maybe I’ll rewatch the first one soon.

      • M M

Without a doubt, but Ashley Bell was good in both movies.

        • EvanDickson

          She was.

  • Deathtone

    take off 3 and 5

  • Jon Bonnell

No one is arguing about Linda! We love Evil Dead.

  • Charlie Kelly

It will always be Regan from The Exorcist

  • djblack1313

how can you leave out Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) from THE EVIL DEAD?!!? i liked her a lot and felt really bad for her (what with the whole tree rape thing and all). plus seeing her trapped/chained in the basement trap door throughout the movie is, to this day, such an iconic visual.

    Katie from PARANORMAL ACTIVITY….really?

  • Melanie Dion

Emily Rose is an awesome film! Jennifer is an amazing actress. The others all get a great big “meh” from me, except, of course, for Regan.

  • horrorking95

Isabella Adjini (or however you spell her bloody name) from Possession should definitely be here! One word… Subway

    • djblack1313

horrorking95, i freaking LOVE that movie! the subway scene remains one of the most wonderfully bizarre, freaky, unsettling scenes ever!

  • Trioxin83

I think PA should be replaced with Jane Levy from Evil Dead 2013, I know it’s a love/hate movie (I loved it), but her performance was awesomely creepy!

    • djblack1313

Trioxin83, i agree! Jane was fantastic in the role.

  • Ress EZ

That Rosemary pic! Would love to put it as the wallpaper on my laptop but can’t imagine to be sitting in my room, totally dark with the pic on. LOL!
