What Are Your Favorite Deaths In Horror Movies?

13 Ghosts Death

A few days ago, our very own Jonathan Barkan asked you which Freddy kill was your favorite. I decided to take his idea and expand it to kills and deaths in any horror film, period. A great kill scene is (arguably) enough to elevate even the worst movies to mildly watchable. As a way of not repeating Jonathan’s list and other lists before me, I’ve decided to eschew any deaths from the Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street or Child’s Play films. The deaths that follow are 13 deaths that I have found to be the most creative, gory or just downright disturbing in horror films. Now I want to know yours!

One of my favorites and most memorable is when the bus hit the girl in Final Destination 1. Every single person in the theater jumped back in their seats, letting out a shriek, followed by a laugh.

  • Alex Dye

This is a great list, most of them were pretty memorable to me as well, especially the lawyer split in 13 Ghosts. I’m thinking also about the disembowling of the biker in the original Dawn of the Dead. That was pretty horrific and memorable.

  • Harley Mitchel Dirk

Nice list, some of them I remember fondly and others I haven’t seen(yet). At least Cloverfield is more like a horror movie than Godzilla 😛 . Here’s my list: Death of Parker and Lambert(Alien), Clemens Death(Alien 3), Quint’s Death(Jaws), Shower Scene(Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter) Freddy’s Puppet(Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors), Defibrillator scene(JC’s the Thing), Releasing the Monsters(Cabin in the Woods), Cut in half(Freddy vs Jason), Jesus Wept(Hellraiser).

  • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

Phil in CP2. Super creepy, disturbing, effective and iconic.

  • twisted

The slice and dice scene in Cube, the Final Destination glass death scene.

  • Michelle Marie

For some reason mine has always been in The Hitcher where the guy is tied to two 18 wheelers and gets ripped apart.

    • DoItFluid

If you’re talking about the original 1980’s The Hitcher, that was the girl from the diner who got ripped in half by the 18 wheelers. Just an FYI.

      • Michelle Marie

I’m talking about the remake, from 2007. Never seen the original, but thanks 😉

        • DoItFluid

My bad, Michelle. I’ve never seen the remake. Sorry about that. Peace.

  • Jonathan Larsson

    1. The head-biting in The Thing.
    2. The face-rip in Hatchet.
    3. The spine-splitting bed scene in Freddy vs Jason.
    4. The ruler scene in Childs Play 2.
    5. The harpoon-in-the-eye from Friday the 13th part 3.
    6. The first death in A nightmare on Elm street.
    7. The biker dude getting the chainsaw in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The beginning.
    8. “Jesus wept” in Hellraiser.
    9. Michael Myers stabbing a girl with a hunting rifle in… one of the Halloween sequels.
    10. “I remember you” from House of a 1000 corpses.

  • The_Righteous_Dan

Paul Reubens’ death in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Honorable mention for both times Jason killed people by picking them up in sleeping bags and beating them against something.

  • Fan4theMovies

There are so many deaths that could be listed, but a few that come to mind for me are:

Water Hose to the Tail Pipe – Wrong Turn 6 (Even though the Wrong Turn movies aren’t everyone’s favorite, I enjoy them because they usually give you untypical horror movie deaths. No matter the quality of the movies I find something in each of them that is interesting.)

Barbwire Beheading – Wrong Turn 4 (SPOILER! just when you thing someone has survived and are gonna get away, they loose their heads. It was a little unexpected too.)

Topless girl in a sleeping bag beaten against a tree – Jason X (I’m pretty sure it’s happen more that once, but I remember it most recently in Jason X when they are trying to buy some time.)

Head in the Microwave – Last House on the Left (remake) (Pretty self explanatory. It was good enough to win an award at the scream awards.)

Dunk into tub of Lye – I Spit On Your Grave (remake) (Revenge Horror always has some dastardly thing happening. Making him keep himself suspended by his own muscle strength to save his life is pretty gnarly. Needless to say he’s not strong enough.)

Man Parts removed – Hostel 2 (You would thing if you had your man parts in a tight situation you would choose your words very carefully. He didn’t and for that the dogs had a treat and he was left to bleed out. Ouch!)

Impaled by a Tusk – Tusk (Given that this is a hit or miss kind of movie for most people, I found enjoyment in it. The whole transformation is one thing but the kind of climax of the movie ends throws you off guard a little.)

Death by Bees – Sleepaway Camp (It seemed like a pretty sucky way to go. Bee and in a camp bathroom, not a good combination.)

Crucifix (Arms, Legs, and Head Turn) – Saw 3 (Just knowing that your appendages are being twisted like that is gruesome. The first time you see it, it’s hard not to cringe at the sight of it.)

Death by Pigs – Hannibal (Eatin by pigs doesn’t seem like a good way to go. Plus, it was you idea to use on someone else and it got reversed and you ended up in it.)

    • Justin McGill

yes.. the sleeping bag beating was a parody I guess.. of the kill he did in Friday 7.. but in that version due to the MPAA it is very jarring because you only get the one THUNK.. LOL. Actually kind of more disturbing than the very comic one in Jason X.

      • Fan4theMovies

Yea, the one in Jason X was used more for comic relief than anything, but I think it was used as a kind of parody on itself. I was fairly certain that it happened at least once in a previous movie, but was not sure as to which one specifically. Even in the remake from a few years ago he used one to cook up one of the “campers” at the beginning. Who knew a sleeping bag could be such a deadly device, but in the hands of Jason Vorhees it is.

  • Spooky Ghost

The drill scene in City of the Living Dead, the guy with the razor on the mattress in Hellraiser 2, Captain Rhodes in Day of the Dead, head explosion in Scanners, intro scene in Begotten and the decapitation scene in Nekromantic 2.

  • Dr. Storm Crow

Zombi 2. The scene where the doctor gets all ready to kick some ass, just to sporadically get torn limb from limb by a whole mess of zombies. Such a heel turn of a kill.

  • sundaynightaddict

I like the ones that are sort of funny… The hilarious scene in the field in Slither where the redneck gets split down the middle, the laser gridding of the soldier in Resident Evil, the lawyer getting eaten by the T-rex on the toilet in Jurassic Park…

  • Justin McGill

I am a bit disappointed.. the death by CDs from Carrie 2? and not the cd flinging Cenobite in Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth? and even though it is considered a bad entry by many many many (not myself) the UNRATED tent scene in Jason Goes to Hell with the fence post is just mind boggling.. and I loved the guy trying to make out with the lawnmower I think it was in “Leprechaun 2”

    • I do love that tent scene in JGTH! The Lawnmower in Leprechaun 2 was on my mind but since they didn’t actually show (I believe it cuts away and just shows blood splatter) it I went with the body explosion. These are just my picks though! That’s why I asked for your input!

    • J Jett

i thought the leather strap from behind the tree (and around the guy’s eyes) scene from F13 part 5 was the most brutal kill (or in the top 3) in the whole series. got i felt so bad for that guy! lol.

  • Ritchie Nihei

The parents’ “Final Destination 2”-style car crash death at the beginning of ‘Night Warning’ from 1982.

The elevator scene from ‘The Fly 2’

The schoolgirl getting killed at the beginning of Dario Argento’s ‘Phenomena’.

  • ashleigh

The original Last House on the Left gutting scene is by far the most memorable for me

    • Fan4theMovies

Hmm the part where Weasel gets his man parts bitten off was pretty memorable too.

  • kilkandark

Phantasm …That freeking Ball still gives me nightmares

    • J Jett

kilkandark, the ball never scared me (i thought it was VERY cool though!) but the scene in PHANTASM where that fly/bug thing is crawling up the back of Michael’s head freaks me out even to this day!! lol.

  • Krug09

I don’t have a favorite. Many great deaths across the board of horror films. Even in the shittiest of shit horror they will have a cool kill.

  • diapers

    Scanners head explosion.

  • diapers

Oh yes, any and all deaths in Infantry of Doom, aka Zombi Doom, aka Violent Shit III.

  • Richter Belmont

Paris Hilton in ‘House Of Wax’. I enjoyed watching her get penetrated in the head. I wish I could say the same about the Kardashians, though.

    • J Jett

Richter i loved that House of Wax/Paris scene too! i was actually surprised (and happy) that they got away with how brutal and gory that scene was. actually just about all the death in HoWax are pretty brutal!

  • Brandon Anderson

Scream, I paused the garage kill on 2:20. I do confirm Michael Jackson…

    • Right?! I always thought that when I watched her death.

  • Chrissie-Watkins

Even though I didn’t love this movie, I will say Sam Jackson in Deep Blue Sea. Arguably the biggest star in the movie gets chomped by a shark in the middle of a sentence.

    • Oh I love Deep Blue Sea (especially the score)! It’s better than Lake Placid at least!

      • Chrissie-Watkins

Very true. And I did LIKE it, mostly because of that death, and the idea of super intelligent sharks was/ is awesome to me. Found the LL Cool J stuff a little corny, though. Especially the bird? I didn’t get it, LOL.

  • J Jett

Trace, you are my favorite person for having the JAWS 2 “Big Gulp” on here!! i’m not even kidding when i say that this scene is THE most horrifying thing ever for me. the way this scene is filmed coupled with how nice/heroic the character was (in saving young Shawn Brody) made the scene just traumatizing for me. LOL. oh the crunching sound effect is the final “HOLY FUCK!” to that scene.

    • Thanks! And yeah Jaws 2 was the first one in the series I ever saw as a kid so it holds a special place in my heart. It freaked me out so bad when I saw it for the first time (and I’ve been sold on aquatic horror ever since).

      • J Jett

Trace word for word same here! JAWS 2 was my first too and it fucked me up ever since! lol. to this day i can’t comfortably go in the water.

  • JB

Why did you not include the canoe scene? It definitely would’ve made my list.

    Anyways I’d include:
Yasmine throwing Goetz on the saw in Frontière(s)
The entire opening scene from Final Destination 2 and the pigeons/plate glass smashing the kid
The motor to the head from FD3
The plate glass decapitation from the Omen (I even like the kill in the remake though the rest of the movie sucks) and Father Brennan’s impalement
The blood test scene in the Thing
Pretty much every death in Tenebrae
The splinter in the eye on Zombi

I could probably go on for days.

  • astronauta69

    evil dead 2 :”swallow this”

The death of Kyung-chul from I Saw the Devil.
The death of Ed from Evil Ed.
The hookers death and dismemberment from Long Pigs.
The head explosion death from scanners.
Every kill from the last 15 or so minutes of Dead Alive.
    Frank’s death in Hellraiser.
The staircase kill from High Tension. Shannon’s death from Hatchet (head split from jaw).

  • Beanis

    Creepshow 2 (The Raft deaths)
The Omen (suicide by hanging nanny)
Damien: The Omen 2 (women gets attacked by a crow and then hit by a truck)
Prom Night 2 (squished to death by gym locker)
    Final Destination (choking in bathtub)
Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (kitty enters then exits David Johansen)
The Blob remake (telephone booth death)

  • Winnipeg Marijuana

When James Karen, playing ‘Frank’ takes off his wedding ring, kisses it and crawls into the incinerator in ‘Return of the Living Dead’.

  • alliedcola

    Welcome to prime-time, bitch!

    • Swinny UK

      Hey Heather… it’s your big break-in TV!

  • ThunderDragoon

The gymnastics scene in FD5. The build-up was beautiful and the death itself looked so realistic.

    • 100% agree with you there! That build-up was so intense seeing it for the first time!

  • Adrian Sewell

The scene with the old couple in the first Hatchet, The first death scene in Suspria and The car crash in Death Proof.

  • Wraith September

TCM2, the new face, Hellraiser 2, the mattress death=guy with straight razor thinking he is covered with bugs and spiders.

  • James Allard

Dr. Moreau (played by Charles Laughton) brought to the House Of Pain… not much actually seen but much implied. Still works.

Kong doing the funky chicken on the warrior leaving a mangled mess in a big monkey footprint.

And, of course, “Choke on it!”

    • Chrissie-Watkins

Loved the tanning bed deaths, AND the teacher in the first one. The idea that everything has to line up just right to doom you, so awesome.

      • James Allard

The horror film fan version of Mousetrap (game, not play) that seems to run on its own strange power, the ghost of Rube Goldberg must have been overseeing each film. Man, I am in SUCH a mood to run all 5…

  • Henry Clayton

Come on, tremmors, critters and killer clowns from outer space just gotta be on the list…. sheriff being used as a hand puppet wins

  • Chrissie-Watkins

I don’t know if I would use the word “favorite”, but I have to admit that all the deaths in Se7en were very creative.

  • Swinny UK

It’s been years since I have seen it, so forgive me if I get some details wrong, but how about the Japanese women in Hostel who has her face destroyed and when she see’s her own reflection, she is so disgusted with the way she looks that she jumps in front of a train and kills herself…. that’s nasty man, seriously lol….I know its a suicide, but it’s the one that comes to mind.

Or how about the one in ‘Death Proof’ where he collides head-on with another vehicle and you see the car tire rip off some girls face? lol Its freaking glorious!!

  • Karen

I flinched in Sinister when they showed the family being killed by the little girl with a lawnmower. Not much gore shown but the mental image of how that must have went down stayed with me!

    • ChelseaGoneAwry

I enjoyed the delivery of that kill as well. It’s hard to tell what’s going on until out of nowhere the lawn mower rips through the family. Best jump scare in the film!

  • Scott Soltau

roach kill nightmare 4..Jason breaking that guys arm in JGTH..Mouth grab in Hatchet…Jaws jumping on the boat….lawnmower in dead alive…chainsaw kill in evil dead remake…that little boat in The Burning..just some of my favorites

  • Liz Ruifrok

I enjoyed the death scenes in Wishmaster, ESPECIALLY the party scene. Just awesome. Skeletons pulling themselves from the skin. VERY creative.

  • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀will

The scene where the girl broke her own face in Mirros was crazy!! Olivia death scene in Scream 4 was brutal!! The lawnmower scene in Sinister had me sleeping with the lights on, the skin ripping kill in Silent Hill also but nothing tops Daniele in H2 because I really liked the character

  • Gold Star For Robot Boy

The werewolf transformation scene in the woods where Principal Steven Wilkins get’s eaten in Trick ‘r Treat. One of my favorites. Also, the majority of kills from Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan.

    • Jonathan Rogers

YES. Jason Takes Manhattan is great. I think the best kill is when Jason punches that guy’s head clean off of his body.

  • Yiorgos Patroklou

Looking at the first video of Final Destination 2, it makes me angry how even though the death scenes where fun and creative, the wooden acting of those who just stand there looking at the gruesome stuff happening is infuriating!

  • Jonathan Rogers

    THIS. From the original Maniac.

  • Shannon F

tons of great deaths in the asia extreme movies… cannibal holocaust.. grotesque.. the numerous wonderful deaths in the guinea pig pack… and of course you can forget the baby death in the human centipede 2. One of my favorites though is the back breaking death from the bed folding scene in Freddy vs Jason. That was fun. And of course the I agree with the mouth grab in Hatchet

  • Brodequin

    The Omen: decapitation…

    • str8jacketx

So epic, the remake characters death is also pretty great.

      • Brodequin

        Yeah, it is good

  • Victor

Honestly there are so many to choose from, but one that I always remember and honestly it was because I cared about her character a lot was Sarah Michelle Gelar’s character in I know what you did last summer, right when you think she made it bam he’s behind her and the way he slashed her with that hook, the way the strobe lights were flashing on him while he swung his arm over and over stabbing her always gives me the chills especially since she had such an epic chase scene.

  • c-s-a78

you forgot in JASON X.the blond chick when he holds her head in the freezing agent then smashes her head like poping I 1st saw that kill,i thought OMG…that is a classic!!!

    • Didn’t forget it! I mentioned it and I only didn’t include it since it pretty makes it on every “Best Death” list ever lol.

  • Cultsphere83

Old lady stuffed in dryer by the Toxic Avenger
Guy killed in elevator by puppets in Puppetmaster.
Heather choking from Draino, and falling into glass table in Heathers
Mutated Ticks exploding out of Clint Howard in Ticks ” I’M INFESTED”!!

The two guards getting killed by Hannibal Lector in cage, Silence of the Lambs
Tina getting sliced up, climbing on the walls, in the 1984 Nightmare On Elm Street

  • str8jacketx
  • Russian bruja

    Больные ублюдки…гореть вам в аду , пидоры…

  • ChelseaGoneAwry

Not really the coolest, but one that always stuck with me was the opening death scene in Scream 2. Something about that woman being stabbed to death in a crowd of people, and nobody helping her or stepping in, just really freaked me out. Same with the opening trap in Saw 3D (Saw 7). Two men wake up trapped in a glass display surrounded by people, but nobody can help them. Ugh, gives me the willies just thinking about it!

  • ChelseaGoneAwry

Also, Boris Karloff being flayed alive in The Black Cat. It’s just a silhouette but somehow that makes it worse.

  • Jeff Eastwood

The opening scene of Ghost Ship.
