“Are You Afraid of the Dark” Episodes That Still Get Under My Skin!

While I was a fan of Goosebumps back in the day, both the TV and book versions, I always found myself more affected by Are You Afraid of the Dark. In fact, I can basically attribute it to all of the fears that linger from my childhood. Now that the Splat! network has officially launched and everyone who was born in the 90s has fallen completely into the well of nostalgia, let’s take a look at the episodes that scared me the most. Thanks for the nightmares Canada!

I’m… cold. Those are pretty spot-on for eeriest episodes. The Tale of the Lonely Ghost gets my creepiest pick. The Tale of Old Man Corcoran is also a pretty unsettling one.

This show holds up well. The stories could inspire a handful of good movies imo

Loved this show as a kid. There was nothing that made me more sad than an episode nearing its end, with the kids putting out the fire. I still love this show.

Other great, scary episodes: The Tale of the Dollmaker, The Tale of the Crimson Clown, The Tale of the Dark Music.

“Dead Man’s Float” – Scary just for climactic finale in the pool, imo. Totally like The Raft segment in Creepshow 2. Not sure if it’s a blatant homage, but It Follows totally has similar scene.

    Personal favorites:
“Hungry Hounds” – When the door in the attic opens it’s like Hellraiser or something. Just very surreal how it leads into the field.

“Thirteenth Floor” – The Body Snatchers-esque weirdness, the reveal of the aliens, when she’s being abducted in that chair, and that twist ending. The whole episode was just very unsettling. The fact that they saw her brother as disposable always disturbed me too.

“The Hatching” – Again, Body Snatchers-esque cult themes really freak me out. The boarding school setting added a real sense of being powerless and isolated from society. The Faculty always reminded me of this episode.

“Night Shift” – Yeah… Body Snatchers. Same themes. And that freaky fucking vampire. This show had some killer practical effects.

Kick-ass article! Thanks for the memories, Hicks!

      Thank you for reading! 🙂

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one totally creeped out by the Thirteenth Floor. That one is still fresh in my mind.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? has a lot of great memories attached to it since me and my older sister would watch it when I was very little. This show (combined with my love of Halloween and watching ghost shows with my sister) is the seed for my love of horror.

“The Tale of Dead Man’s Float” has been a favorite since I was little. I remember thinking that skeletal spirit was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Flash forward a decade-and-a-half and I STILL think it is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

“The Tale of Laughing in the Dark” is another favorite, though it is more from recent viewings (Some episodes from when I was little are vague memories at best). It is well set up and that carney is awesome. “It’s the most fun in the park, when you’re Laughing in the Dark!”

My personal favorite episode is “The Tale of the Midnight Madness”. Not only was it my introduction to Nosferatu (suck it, Spongebob!), but it is a fantastically creepy episode. And it has one of my favorite characters, Dr. Vink (played by the same actor who played the carney/Zeebo in “Laughing in the Dark”). Vink (“with a va, va, va!”) is a great mad genius who is just so much fun to watch.

This show is one reason why I’m such a horror fan!

Bookish babysitter scared the crap outta me as a child

  • Javi Simon

I didn’t have cable when this was big. So, I gravitated toward “Goosebumps” on Fox Kids (Remember that gem :)?) Although I don’t think it lives up to Goosebumps, this show still carries a similar vibe that I appreciate. As a matter of fact, I think I’ll watch an episode now.

Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark never bothered me but despite being way older there are episode of the Haunting Hour that was amazing. “Catching Cold” stands out for an episode to watch but I also have a soft spot for “Big Yellow” and a few others. Also Zeebo is pretty damn creepy.

The Tale of the Lonely Ghost haunted me for years as well. And I agree, I think everyone must have a clown episode that particularly bothered them. For me it was The Tale of the Crimson Clown.

  • Chrissie-Watkins

I don’t remember the title but there was one episode that kind of told the story of The Monkey’s Paw. Totally freaked me out. And Zeebo, yeah.

  • Flu-Like Symptoms

Is Zeebo the one where they steal his red nose and keep it as a souvenir until he finds their house and starts haunting them, demanding they give it back? That was the one episode that really stuck with me. Two of the kids are talking on the phone and they hear a click like someone picked up on an extension. When the kid with the nose realizes it’s someone on the other phone in his house we hear a raspy voice say “give it back!” Loved that episode.
