‘The Neon Demon’ Was Booed at Cannes
Nicolas Winding Refn’s glamorous horror film The Neon Demon is receiving some very strong reactions over at Cannes, much of which seems to be extremely negative. Word is spreading like wildfire over Twitter that the movie received a hefty dose of “boos” at its premiere and that critics are less than pleased with the offering. You can see a few reactions below.
Elle Fanning stars as ‘Jesse,’ an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles in hopes of breaking through. Her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, Drive, Only God Forgives) with a screenplay co-written by NWR and Mary Laws, the film’s principal cast includes Elle Fanning (Maleficent), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1), Karl Glusman (Stonewall), Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road), Desmond Harrington (Dexter, Gossip Girl) Christina Hendricks (Drive), and Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix series).
Alessandro Nivola plays Nicolas, a fashion impresario who taps Elle Fanning as his muse.
The Neon Demon got exactly the reception I'm sure Refn was hoping for. Audience members literally shouting abuse at the screen #Cannes2016

The Neon Demon: Visually and sonically it's Refn's most sublime work. Story-wise it barely exists. #Cannes2016
