‘Southbound’ Clip Comes Face to Face With a Reaper!

Published

on

Southbound is now on DVD through Sony Home Entertainment (order your copy here), and here’s a taste of one of the deleted scenes in which the character Mitch comes face to face with a reaper.

Southbound is new kind of anthology that features many of the talented filmmakers behind Bloody Disgusting’s debut V/H/S! (In the interest of full disclosure, I produced Southbound, with Bloody Disgusting being the catalyst for discovering so many talented filmmakers.)

In the film, “On a desolate stretch of desert highway, weary travelers – two men on the run from their past, a band on their way to the next gig, a man struggling to get home, a brother in search of his long-lost sister and a family on vacation – are forced to confront their worst fears and darkest secrets in a series of interwoven tales of terror and remorse on the open road.

As I wrote before, we are still so proud of what David Bruckner and Radio Silence accomplished in V/H/S and think you’re going to love what they did here in Southbound.

In fact, one of the cooler things about the film is that V/H/S and V/H/S/2 producer and friend Roxanne Benjamin made her directorial debut in the film. Her story is about an all-female band on the road who runs into some trouble. Roxanne is also a big part of Bloody Disgusting as she was an intricate part in our massive BD Selects line. To see her go from working on Bloody Disgusting to directing a feature film nearly had me tear up. I think she knocked it out of the park visually, as well as with the talent and story. Just wait until you see how her characters segue into Bruckner’s shocking piece…

It’s a shame that Bruckner never got to direct the new Friday the 13th film. When you see his camerawork in action, just imagine what Jason Voorhees slicing and dicing campers in the 1980’s would have looked like. In fact, we nicknamed him “Bruckenstein” because he’s a mad scientist on set!

The newcomer here is Patrick Horvath, who directed the Halloween-esque indie Entrance. This time he delivers a colorful pseudo Western that ties a lot of the Southbound mythology together.

And Radio Silence… when Tom and I first saw their YouTube shorts we had our minds blown. After their quasi-haunted house segment in V/H/S they went off to make Devil’s Due for Fox. Here, they show incredible restraint and deliver massive scope and scenery, as well as plenty of blood. It was exciting watching them work on set as they’re like the Energizer Bunny on roids. They’re extremely unorthodox in their approach; I felt like we were in The Warriors, only shooting a film.

I’m pretty excited for you guys to see this because they’re as much part of Bloody as you guys are! It feels like we’ve all been growing up together.

Southbound was also produced by Benjamin, Chris Harding (The Guest, You’re Next), Radio Silence (V/H/S) and Greg Newman (Stake Land, The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers). Executive producers are Malik B. Ali, Badie Ali, Hamza Ali, David A. Smith and Christopher Alender.

An Official Selection at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest and the Scary Movies Film Festival, Southbound was released by The Orchard theatrically and digitally earlier this year. Dubbed the “‘Twilight Zone’ for the indie horror generation” (Twitch), bonus features on the DVD include Commentary, Deleted Scenes Reel, Outtakes Reel, plus Photo Gallery.
