This is definitely the goriest movie ever made, no doubt about it but I didn’t enjoy it all that much. It was just OK for me. Worth a watch if you are into all gore and no scares.

So funny and great lines all over the place. The get to watch early peter jackson (lotr) movies is pretty good. I have always liked this movie. My absolute favorite movie ever made. Absolutely. What a freakin ride, man! Everything about this movie is great…the incredible gore and over-the-top efx that this movie is known for is really only part of the equation…the characters (I love Picita’s Grandmother, the zookeeper, and the drunk in the park!), camera work (I love the close up, fish eye face shots!) and even the set designs (Lional’s house on the hill, the basement…) are excellent. The dialouge and scripting are really good too (“but we are romantically entangled!” and, “Your mother ate my dog!” are two personally satisfying standout quotes.)

This movie delivers on so many levels and CAN appeal to so many people…it truly is a standard setting, genre defining CLASSIC!

if you have NOt seen this movie, then go start your lawnmower, flip it over, and JUMP INTO IT…or just rent it. MAKE SURE IT’S THE 97min. UNRATED VERSION!!!!!

The gore is amazing, exe THE LAWNMOWER IN THE LIVINGROOM!!! or the BABAY IN THE BLENDER!!! A great KIWI film if ever there was one. And to think this great director went on to make crap like THE LORD OF THE RINGS!!! What a waist Peter Jackson…what a waist!!

Oh Dear God! This is, without a doubt, the goriest movie I have ever seen. I loved it! It is also very funny. The zombie sex was hysterical (especially since one of the participants had been a priest before he turned). The fact that a zombie baby was conceived during this unholy union was even better. Tasteless to the extreme and I loved every minute of it!

The sub-genre of bloody Saturday morning cartoons has come a long way over the years, and it’s hard to Braindead was the granddaddy of them all. Maybe that is why it seems so stale when the gore starts. It’s hard not to compare it to superior movies like The Machine Girl and Kill Bill from the same sub-genre, despite the fact it’s older. I could be the only one who feels that way, but after seeing so many similar movies first that were better, it’s hard to be positive in this review.

I know no one else is going to share my opinion here, but I really loved this movie until the gore started–then it just got bland and seen-this-before. On a technical level, as far as amount, this is most likely the goriest movie ever made. That doesn’t mean it’s effective, however. The gore effects have not aged well and though the gore is terribly unrealistic or anything, but I was just unimpressed with the level of actual blood. It seemed there was a lot of bloodied skin and torn out ribcages, but hardly any blood on the floor or on anything else except in random scenes where blood was a plot point. That’s why I’m hard-pressed to call this the goriest movie ever because I’ve certainly seen more blood on screen than this in Inside and seen more severed limbs in Kill Bill. So maybe it’s just the audacity that tricks us into thinking it’s the goriest movie of all time, because I’m starting to doubt it is.

Though none of this makes the film bad. It isn’t bad. For what it tried to do, it did. The lawnmower scene was nicely done. There were quite a few genuinely funny scenes, and I’m not sure the last time a gore movie (I almost said horror movie, but this really isn’t one) had me laughing as hard as Braindead did. The casting and acting were absolutely perfect for the type of movie it was. It reminded me a lot of a bloody episode of Wallace and Gromit, for whatever reason.

I just can’t give this a perfect rating. I guess I’ve seen so many modern movies like this before I saw Braindead, it just looks slightly bland and overdone. I just can’t say it holds up well to movies like The Evil Dead, even though it has more gore. I think there are some movies that are meant for a certain generation, and a lot of people in the next generation won’t understand it. Maybe that’s what Braindead is. It was made before horror-comedy really caught on in a major way, but after you’ve seen all the others this just seems repetitive–at least to me. Make up your own mind. Any and every horror fan needs to see this movie. Don’t let my negative comments discourage you from that.

First of all, let me state that this film was probably the last hurrah for the gore-filled late 80′s films & whatta way to go! Released in 1992, Dead Alive is one of the most goriest films ever to come out of New Zealand (or anywhere else really!).

Taking place in 1957, a rare and dangerous animal, offically known as Simian Raticus (the Rat Monkey Sumatra) is taken from it’s home at Skull Island and brought to a local zoo. What the visitors don’t know is that this monkey has an infectious bite, one that turns anyone into a bloodthirsty zombie! When Lionel, a young man with a smothering Mother who watches his every move, takes his newly found girlfriend Paquita to that zoo, he gets more than he ever bargined for! You see, while he & Paquita enjoys the zoo, Mother is spying on them, only to accidently get bitten by that monkey (Uh, oh!). After Mother gives the animal the boot (watch & see), Lionel takes her home to get well, but as we all know in these movies, that ain’t going to happen! Soon Mother gets ill…….really ill! And the zombie-ness begins! When Zombie-Mom gets loose, she takes a nurse with her, and it ain’t to the hospital either! After mom’s “funeral”, she meets a few more of the town locals, including Father McGruder, who appearently “Kicks @*% For The Lord”, and soon we have quite a little Zombie-party going on here. That is until Lionel’s house becomes host to an actual party by his money-hungry Uncle Les. But no one tells the party-goers that the Zombie’s are the real guests of honor! So what do you do when you have a party with eventually a hundred or so uninvited zombies? You break out the lawnmower and get to “weeding” them out, of course!

I think I’ve told you enough to get your interest in this movie, but if that didn’t do it, consider this: I personally own about 75 horror DVD’s & Dead Alive is the most goriest, sickest, disturbing, and funniest of my bunch (it’s even more of these things than “Evil Dead II:Dead By Dawn”!). The DVD has a nice, crisp picture that’s letterboxed, and has a very nice stereo mix too. So, if you want a horror movie that you’ll be finding yourself showing everybody you know again & again, then get Dead Alive! You won’t be sorry……..oh, I almost forgot about the Zombie-Baby! Well, I’ll let you get the movie and see for yourself.

Check this, as everyone else has already said this movie is awesome. Gore out the ass and I am just going to hit the highlights since the rest has apparently been stated below. Rat monkey, Zombie sex, Zombie baby, Zombie party, mowing Zombies, kicking ass for the Lord, and anything and everything thats jacked the hell up and makes a movie great. My only recommendation, and this is important, is that the R version and Unrated version are largely different. Unrated=bad ass, R rated=cut like hell and for a reason.

A really great film but a truly disgustingly gory film. As much as I like this movie I can never bring myself to rewatch it. It is extremely gory. And as far as gore goes, ahead of it’s time. I could think it’s possible and fair to say that this film is even more bloody than Hostel.

I was fortunate enough to see this at a re-run film series at a theater in my town a few years back, and i recommend that anyone that digs a gory comedy flick see this right away. if you have a weak stomach, you may get ill!

Great movie. It rightly deserves it’s spot as the ‘goriest movie ever made.’ Very entertaining to watch, as well. I also like how the first half of the movie has considerably less gore than the rest of it, and then suddenly you get bombarded with gross-out antics. Highly recommended for any horror movie fan.

Dead Alive is brilliant beyond belief. I had heard it referred to as the goriest movie ever and it did not disappoint. I was in awe of how hilariously disgusting it was from start to finish. Jackson is a genius and he should go back to making movies like this little gem. I cannot recommend this film enough. All I can say is you owe it to yourself to see this movie. I fucking love this movie. It’s a movie that is just so terrible that it turns out to be perfect. I mean the acting isn’t exactly oscar quality, hell i’ve seen better acting in middle school plays but the point is it the most fun you’ll have ever watching this kind of movie. The humor is right on and blood soaked. “I kick ass for the lord!” is possibly one of the funniest lines to come from a horror movie. Now we move on to the blood, the defining factor of this movie. Be warned this movie holds the WORLD record for most fake blood used in a movie and you can tell from the start. A couple scenes will always stick in my head [When the baby is "reborn" from inside a women's head and the ungodly bloodiness of the lawnmower scene] and that’s what I am looking for in a movie, staying power. Trust me when I say, you’re in for a treat. Well as long as you don’t mind treats covered in puss, blood and brains.

I thought that dead alive was the best zombie movie I have ever seen.

Storyline: One man has to save the day against evil zombies. 10/10

    Acting: Just…………….Awesome. 10/10

Special Effects: Gore and blood all in glorious b-grade quality. 10/10

Best Scene: When the zombies get a taste of the ol’ trusty lawn mower. LOL. 10/10

Ending: Left me sitting on the couch with shit and piss in my pants. 10/10

Overall this movie was pure brilliance and i’m suprised peter jackson directed it considering his famous lotr trilogy that he is best known for, this is truly peter jacksons best work and I give it a 10/10

If you can get through the first 20 minutes or so, Peter Jackson’s (Lord of the Rings) Dead-Alive is without a doubt the best Horror-Comedy of all time. I’ll admit that the first time through I wasn’t sure about the first 1/4 of the movie, but if you have seen the whole thing, I can’t see how anyone could disagree that this is the best Horror/ Comedy movie of all time. It includes a “walking” anus/ intestines that begs for it’s life, a protagonist that literally mows through a house filled with dozens and dozens of zombies (ending in a house with an inch of blood and gore on the floor), a twenty-foot tall zombie mother, zombie sex (that, of course, results in a zombie baby being walked through the park in a baby stroller lined with barbed wire by the protagonist), a ninja-priest, and a lawnmower (trust me, you’ll love the lawnmower scene… and the baby… and the “living” intestines… and pretty much everything else). Like I tell everyone, if you can make it through the intentionally cheesy first 20 minutes or so. Once the zombie mother squirts her pus into the custard, then soon after eats the dog, you will love it.

I admit that I hate comedy/horrors, I don’t think the two were meant to go together, then again Peter Jackson kept them at distance from one another to still work together to make my favourite horror of all time.

It was fantastic, it’s horror was unspeakable that it’s the sort of stuff I need to start my day when needing to watch something good. I’ve already watched it three times in one week and I’m not one of those people who repeat watching things.

However the things that got me about it was that I liked how the zombies worked, they were just immense, the level of killings was fantastic and how everyone was just ripped part, even at how it showed the epidemic stepping up bit by bit, also have to stay I liked the pure zombie baby idea and the amount of blood was brilliant that it was worth buy (And people say fundings don’t help make a good movie)

Have to also give something to the comedy parts, I liked the choice of main actor being a Mama’s boy (Well someone who has a really attached Mother, still a mama’s boy though), I loved the scene where the guy’s just pratically trying to pummel the zombie baby into submission to control him and the christian priest with martial arts couldn’t be a better idea.

There are problems with it though that I found was that I disliked being able to see the Mother who had turn into a giant zombie rat’s butt and boob like ugh! preferred that the lady with the black hair and glasses didn’t die after going through all that and she was sexy, but oh well they made up with a cool death for her and the main character’s uncle couldn’t of been more family like seeing as he was cool and it’s shame to have a guy like that cruel to his nephew. However it didn’t stop it being such a great movie!

“I kick ass for the Lord!” These immortal words are spoken as a Vicar from the church beats the shit out of a few undead zombies. And I laugh everytime he proclaims this, and kicks ass. This movie is one of the best zombie movies to ever be made, and doesn’t hold back on the gore/fun at all. I wouldn’t call the acting terrible, just extremely cheesey. This movie is supposed to be cheeky, gross, and scary all in the same. This movie as a whole is brilliant. It’s like the demon child of Night of the Living Dead and Evil Dead, but it still holds it’s own. It’s well made, considering there no big names attached, except the much younger at the time Peter Jackson. It’s still hard to believe that one of the best film makers of all time made this delightful little gem (even if it is covered in blood) and won mutliple Oscars for something so radically different. I recommend this to any horror fan!

Unbelieveable–after all the years of hunting through VHS minefields in the old rental days, I always passed this up because the cover looked retarded (which is something I learned to never do, but it took time). So, I stop at the vid store and buy it on a whim today—-an absolute gore classic, and I missed out on it for a couple decades. If you are not into silly acted, non-serious gore flicks, then just don’t even bother because you will more than likely not get into it. But, if you can have a sense of humor about your gore, then this is a friggin’ goldmine. Just a bloody mess of a movie with clap-worthy goremageddon. The beginning was far too much cheese for me—-was ready to abort the view and just check out computer stuff with this as background noise….until the real mayhem erupted. Once the blood started flowing, then the film was a non-stop fun machine. A must have.

The only dissapointment was how the effects for the gore were awesome, but the effects for the evil rat monkey and zombie baby were horrible! You could totally tell that the baby was a man in a zombie baby suit. Other than that i would definatley recommend it for people like me who like to laugh and gag at the same time!

Brain Dead (Dead Alive) is one of the all time classics in schlocky zombie horror, it has everything you need to have a good time stop motion animation, beautiful outdoor sets, a bitchy mother character, zombies having sex (and babies) and the goriest moment in movie history featuring a lawn mower.

I dont need to go in depth for this one, chances are you have already seen it.

Funny as Hell and twice as gory. Worth top marks for the big Lawnmower scene alone.

Dead alive really is the goriest film of all time. It’s quite disgusting. Which for horror fans, means its automatically worth a look. However, I did not care much for the characters being as I found them to be pretty annoying, but the iconic lawnmower scene automatically has made it a cult classic and I agree that for horror fans, its a must-see.

It doesn’t get much better than this when it comes to a fun, campy style horror film. The buckets of blood and the lawnmower totally push it over the edge.

Definitely one of my favorites. Always loved the nurse with her head hanging off backwards and of course the lawnmower scene.

I’ve watched this every Halloween since I was 15 and still love it. Some of the greatest and most creative deaths ever! Incredible amounts of blood and gore as well as tons of laughs. It really doesn’t get any better than this.

a very awesome gory zombie movie one of the best parts is when the zombie baby is introduced truly hilarious. The zombie baby idea from the Dawn of the Dead remake was copied from this movie.
