this is the movie that made me a horror genre fan. i saw this movie by myself in the theater when i was only 9 years old. i remember vividly the beginning scenes with the church imagery and the doors flying open. The scene that affected me most however is the hallway scene with the nurse. This continues to be one of the scariest movie moments in history. i have never since been so creeped out by a movie in a theater. If the only sequel you have seen is the heretic, please forget about that and give this film a try. Legion is very different from the original exorcist but is definitely just as good.
An underrated masterpiece. George C. Scott and Brad Dourif are amazing. One of the scariest movies I’ve seen.
great movie i couldnt believe how good it was,and still very creepy…the hedge clipper scene gets me every time!
this film never got a chance thanks to the crappy Heretic
There is something very unsettling about “The Exorcist III:Legion”. From the dreamlike opening sequence dabbed with disquieting images of Catholic Iconography, the menacing underscored acoustics and Director William Peter Blatty’s unconventional cerebral style this is a sequel which compliments the original extremely well.
Fifteen years after the original events a Psychopath is haunting Georgetown, slaying its victims using Satanic like rituals. The M.O is identical to the long dead “Gemini Killer” who was executed moments before Fr. Karras (Jason Miller) died from his injuries received during the 1973 Exorcism of Regan MacNeil.
When Lt. Kinderman a character from “The Exorcist” (Played here to perfection by the late George C. Scott) is called in to investigate the killings his discoveries lead him to a room in a dark Asylum where a man who looks like Fr. Karras (Miller) but sounds like “The Gemini Killer” (Brad Dourif) admits in detail to all the ritualistic killings and also claims to be possessed by the legion of demons who once possessed the MacNeil child.
But if this is the man responsible for the Georgetown murders how is he leaving the maximum security Asylum.
When I saw this movie in 1990 I was only fifteen. I didn’t appreciate back then its powerful use of intellect and dialogue over the other visceral movies I had been accustomed to like “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and even the original “The Exorcist”. What Blatty gives to us here is a Film that respects the structure and elements of the 1973 classic and is wise enough to not copy its inimitable terrifying sequences.
This movie has its own unique and disturbing images. Moving religious statues, standout murder set-pieces, brilliant demonic performances from Jason Miller and Brad Dourif and a powerfully executed Exorcism finale that although not as powerful as its originator still stands up well to anything that we’ve been offered cinematically since.
dont forget the patrick ewing cameo. this was a good film, not great bet 7000 times better than exorcist 2
Not based on the first two at all (though they tried to tie it in) but that’s part of what makes it better in my opinion.
You get a really good look at the mind of a crazy (or is he possessed?! omg!) person. Who, btw, is played amazingly by the one the only Brad Dourif.
Atmospheric and bloody terrifying.
The hedge clipper scene…of course…is a lesson in how to successfully man a scene that scares the pants off of anyone. Simple stuff, like red herrings and static camerawork, and then BLAM. Even when you know its coming, you scream like a namby pamby.
The better, the best Exorcist sequal. Good stuff.
Really compelling ideas going on here & it’s nice to see some of the original actors return. There’s also some really genuine scares in this one, easily the best of the Exorcist sequals.
A fascinating film.. almost as good as the original. Very creepy death scenes and a weird atmosphere. Brad Dourif, the guy who plays Father Karras and George C Scott are great in this.
This could have worked just as well, or maybe even better as a standalone. It is not to be compared to the first Exorcist, because it is aimed in a different direction. Approach with caution, and you may just be pleasantly satisfied.
Wow! This was a great TRUE sequel to the scariest movie ever made! It had Patton and was genuinely creepy!! George Scott and Brad Doruif STOLE the show! Brilliant
This is the best movie in the series next to the original.
Better than the second one. Doesn’t say much.
I agree that it is the best movie in he series next to the original.
Finally an exorcist-movie that I really like.
Part 3 blasts the first two parts directly to hell.
(IMO Exorcist I 6/10, Exorcist II 2/10)
It’s creepy and scary, pretty tense and extremely atmospheric. The camera work is simply astonishing, the cast is consistently strong (George C. Scott, Brad Dourif – nuff said), the dialogue is absolutely brilliant and there are some scenes that totally frightened me. A great but sadly underrated movie, highly recommended.
Fantastic sequel
This movie freaked me out the first time I saw it. It’s a great sequel. Very underrated. Check it out!
Far better than the second.
One of the best threequels ever made and criminally underrated.
Solid movie…I highly recommend reading the book beforehand to pick up the nuances a movie has not time to establish. This is also a great bookend to watch with Blatty’s “Ninth Configuration” based on his book “Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane” which Blatty had originally wanted to be the sequel to “The Exorcist” (see Q & A with Blatty on NinthConfiguration dot com)
One of the most atmospheric horror films ever made. The foreboding sense of “dormant-but-awakening” evil is rife throughout the movie beginning to end. The only questionable bits were the lack of a strong protagonist priest we grew to care for(Father Morning’s character was woefully underdeveloped) and the film *was* called “Exorcist” (albeit a sequel). And while I admired Brad Dourif’s performance, I thought he was the wrong actor for the film. Should have been a possessed Father Karras the whole way through, giving Jason Miller the screen time he deserved. The exorcism sequence toward the end was equally weak, again because of the lack of character development for “the movie’s exorcist”. The movie itself is great but still could have failed had it not been for the fact that it remains of the few horror films that have a honestly happy ending. I hope to read the novel “Legion”, the book the movie is based on, at some point. Another saving grace for this sequel is that the storyteller is the same as from the original. Truly terrifying film. Not great, but solidly good. And that is an enormous compliment for a horror film, especially a sequel. One of the top 5 or 10 best horror sequels ever made, IMO.
Even with this film/story’s flaws, which are more than a few, this is the perferct example of what today’s horror films have strayed from: deep atmosphere, serious character exploration, real spiritual subjectmatter, and a plot that takes the subject matter seriously. Oh…and get this, a true conflict between good and evil where the forces of good are just as strong, if not stronger. Ah…the good ole’ days of horror filming.
This movie wasn’t terribly bad, but I didn’t think it was that good either. I don’t know why though..hmm
Awful. I don’t understand all the praise this movie receives… stick to part 1.
