I own the unrated film and I love this movie. It’s just a trip… It takes you inside the mind of a mad man. Chtistian Bale is perfect in this film! check this movie out!
American Psycho remains one of my favorite horror films to this date. Bale’s performance is amazing and he really captures the character of Patrick Bateman. I would recommend this to anyone.
i enjoyed this movie….me and my parents watched it today, wasnt too much gore, but i really didnt mind that, because it was all about Bateman and how messed he becomes
the only thing i didnt get was the ending…like did he really kill everyone? or was it all in his head?
I like this movie. It is insane the way he does all the things he does. It is one of the best movies ever made. Very psycho.
I hate this movie,it really sucks!!!!
I would rather watch cullenfanpire videos on youtube they rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love that he was just a fuckin nut even though he looked to put together. A great film.
Feed me a stray cat…. =)
Great movie…
Absolute Brilliance! Set in a wonderfully sublime 1980′s buisness world, this spiral of insanity tells the story of a man who, under his social mask, loathed the very essence of everyone around him… and after committing his grisly crimes, could not be caught, however brash about the crimes; immune to even a confession. I cannot explain how important this movie is! An absolute must see… now if you would excuse me, I need to return some video tapes.
Fantastic film. Not quite perfect, but definitely getting there. Christian Bale is one of his best, sexiest roles. Not to be missed.
so much luv for this movie. sarcasim, blood and sex
Honestly, I wish more movies were this good. Funny, hardcore, brutal. Mary Harron makes me pround to be a female filmmaker.
Christian Bale is simply outstanding as Patrick Bateman, he takes no prisoners. An amazing film.
Mwah, it’s okay, it could’ve made WAY better to be honest. I used to love this movie, but ever since i’ve red the book, it’s really on big dissapointment. So for all fans to this movie, i really recommand the book “American Psycho”. It has so much torture in it that this movie didn’t show. Just some weak killing, while the book makes your spine shiver with joy. Overal, Christian Bale did an awesome job in this movie. I’m giving it a skinny 7.
“Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now you %*!#ing stupid bastard!”
I saw American Psycho when it hit theaters back in 2000. Going in, I really did not know what to expect. I thought I was going to see something similar to “Psycho.”
I walked out of the theater after the movie was over, blown away. I was thinking “what the hell was this movie I just saw?” and “who the hell was that guy?” Needless to say, it quickly became one of my all-time favorites!
Awesome awesome awesome movie. I could go on forever so I will keep it short. The first thing that caught my attention here was the directing. Very good! If only more movies were constructed with this much care and attention to detail. Mary Harron both excellently captured and depicted the character of Bateman and his world in this film. Really, the viewer is drawn into his world right from the get-go. Or is it the shower scene, lol?
Not enough can be said about Christian Bale’s performance. It was perfect and SHOULD have won the “Best Actor” Oscar in 2000. What the hell do those Oscar people know anyhow? I did not know who this guy was until after I saw this movie. He became my favorite actor very fast as I saw more of his films. And, he eventually became my favorite superhero! …But Bale was still better in American Psycho than he was in either of the Batman films. Christian Bale’s Bateman was so many things: calculating, sarcastic, manipulative, menacing, and pure evil.
The story was very engaging. It was wise to have a lot of narration by Bateman, as it helped put a face on this otherwise faceless character. Plus the rage and sarcasm that came out of his mouth was really funny. Too funny in fact, where I found myself wondering if I should be laughing and cheering this guy on so much.
I really enjoyed the killing in this movie. I thought it was very well done in that it showed enough to really creep the viewer out. This movie was a bit Jason-like as Bateman’s killing scenes were so entertaining to me. No he did not smash an occupied sleeping bag against a tree or anything, but that axe scene in his apartment, with Paul Allen, and Huey Lewis and the News, holy shit!
I also loved the soundtrack to this movie. Those 80′s hit songs Bateman was always listening to, flawless! His speech on Genesis just before the terrific sex scene, super-awesome.
I decided to give the novel a read shortly after seeing the film in hopes of learning more about what was going on in Bateman’s head. The movie is not exactly the same as the book in that the book has more events and details of Bateman and his activities. I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the movie and wants more Bateman, as more Bateman you will get!
While I am very happy with the movie, I ultimately do wish the director included more of the gore from the book. Not all the gore though, no one wants it to be a Saw film…But imagine what the scene with the pipe, the cheese, the rat, and the acid would have been like!
Bottom line is American Psycho is a super-excellent film that should be missed by no horror fan.
Easily 5/5 Skulls!
“…and I really can’t stress blonde enough. Blonde.”
I didn’t really like it. Probably because I didn’t really get it.
A brave attempt to film the awesome book. Patrick Bateman is a towering character and Bale plays him to perfection. A wonder tale of greed, 80′s yuppiedom and murder.Loses its way toward the end but exposes the hollow futility of big business.
A must see movie for every horror buff. It shows how a serial killer becomes to unravel and eventually lose it. Not too much blood just the right amount. Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman need not say anymore!!!!
Very good movie.
Very interesting movie. I loved how it was just a trip through the mind of a person slowly slipping into insanity. Bale did a great job of portraying a killer and was a joy to watch. Without him there would have been no movie.
‘Huh?’ is what I muttered after seeing this extremely polarized film. This has got to be the best example I’ve ever seen of a ‘love it or hate it’ flick. I should mention that American Psycho is by no means a horror movie…at all. It’s a psychological thriller with elements of drama. It feels too long, and Christian Bale just isn’t a good enough actor to pull his weight in the role (though I will admit, I was impressed with him in this movie). Gorehounds should get away and never look back…there is almost no gore in the entire movie.
If you watch this film as a drama or a character study, you might get a kick out of it – but American Psycho is no more a horror movie than I am Santa Claus…
Great movie, Christian Bale play’s a great psycho.
This will be a classic. The best movie by Bale in my opinion. Very original, but a confusing ending?
Great movie here, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ THE BOOK PEOPLE. The film is G – Rated compared to the book, which features scenes involving the murder of a 5 year old at the zoo, than pretending to be a doctor to comfort the boys mother. And the insertion of a starved rat into a womans vagina……. This movie as well as the book has some great humor, and a mind-fuck of an ending.
Chrisain Bale deserved an Oscar for this role.
This was the first Christian Bale movie I watched I thought this is one crazy fucked up film and I think in the end he was taken care of by his peers….I love the way movie looked and its was crazy movie and a must see totally.
this movie is so insane its hard not to like crazy just plain crazy!
An excellent very layered film that warrants multiple watches. Bale is excellent in all aspects of his character, good directing, one of my top 10 movies of all time!
lovelovelovelovelove this movie. that chainsaw kill was so clutch. great acting by Christian Bale like always.
just awesome! Amazing movie and awesome soundtrack. It is hip to be square!
A very good film. Christian Bale was great!
awesome movie awesome acting, really shows how self absorbent people can be, plus gotta love seeing Jared letto get dominated with the axe to Huey Louise and the news. still with i could see that bitch get it with the chainsaw
this was a really cool movie, but i didnt even think that this was too much of a horror movie. I actually thought it was funny. when he killed jared leto is really funny
I saw this movie when it ran in the theaters and i was really impressed. Christian bales acting was brilliant, he deserved an oscar and the dialogue was superb. I really liked the Ed Gein thing he told his friends about and when he told his secretary that Ted Bundys dog was named Lassie, “Who’s Ted Bundy?” “never mind”. One of the most memorable death scenes is when he kills one of his co workers “Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now you f*@#ing stupid bastard!”. That death scene belongs among the tops with Captain Rhodes and the Omen photographers deaths.
Bales preformance really scared the shit out of me and five years after seeing this when i was watching Batman Begins i could not stop thinking about his American Psycho preformance (Batman=Bateman???).
Full Score!
Christian Bale is awesome and this movie is incredible!Highly recommend it to anyone!!!!!!!!!!! Sick, evil and just absoultly amazing!!! Please insert stray cat
To date this is still one of Bale’s best performances, he’s charming, funny & genuinly frightening. Not many films get you under the skin of a psychopath quite like this one, see it!
Non stop entrainment. Great laughs.
The killer is the main character which makes the story that much more fun.
Basic story: Patrick Bateman is a psychopath who can’t stop killing people. He loves to do it, but it makes such a mess which is a pain to clean up. He wants to be seen as perfect, or at least normal. Most people actually see him that way which allows him to go unnoticed. He is so obviously nuts and throws these hints at people and they still don’t get it. The finale comes down to a hilarious murdering spree with a conclusion that leaves you dumbfounded.
amazing movie
Definitely worth watching
I can’t think of anything wrong with this movie other than the part where Patrick points an unconnected pneumatic nail gun to the back of his secretaries head. Good thing he didn’t go for the kill, because he would have epicly failed.
My 3rd favorite movie of Christian Bale! all i can say is what an AMAZING MOVIE!!!!!
Christan Bale is a tool, that being said he was amazing in this movie! Truely made to play this role. The scene where hes flexing in the mirror doing the whore……somthing tells me he’s done this before. I’m not shure if this is a new classic or not but I’ll throw it up there with my top 20 of all time. Now How is it a total tool is in some of my favorite movies?
amazing film although truthfully i prefered the sequel
I didn’t enjoy the part where he was kicking the
homeless guy’s dog to death when in real life Christian Bale is an Animal Rights Activist, so
after that scene I had a really really really
difficult time for the longest time in liking the guy again even though it was just for a really fucked up character he portrayed.
Christian Bale is fantastic in this movie. I’m not sure it would have been nearly as good with another actor in the main role. And this movie is a great satire of the 80′s. Especially the business card scene.
I liked this movie, and after I watched it went to a bookstore a few days later and looked for the book. Skimmed through a little at the store and realized the movie didn’t touch near the sadisticness of the book. You want to know just how fucked up Bale’s character was then read the book, it was crazy.
Great adaptation of Ellis’ grim novel, American Psycho is made of all the funny, sarcastic parts of the book, leaving aside the great majority of the gore and sadness that made the novel famous in the first place. I would normally hate this kind of adaptation, but in this case… it just works. Instead of being exploitative, Mary’s movie perfectly captures the void and superficiality of Bateman’s soulless world. Bale’s performance is nothing but perfect!
Great, but not a horror movie…more like a drama/thriller i guess. One of the best Christian Bale’s films, if not THE BEST. However i wish there was more blood and gore…but fuck it, it’s not about it. Recommend to anyone, who likes blood, little drama, good plot and twisted ending.
How dazzling, this movie. Not nearly as gruesome as the novel, but brutally beutiful. People can argue and say it’s not a horror movie, but if this isn’t horrific, I don’t know what is.
Let me get a bit simple here, and ask; what the fuck is this movie about? Up until the last four minutes of the film, Bateman was a psycho killer, protected by his high profile as a beautiful rich young hard man.*
But incoming, he was all just imagining it? No? Yes?
Oh, perhaps he was just imagining the sequence where he was mistaken for Paul Allen, his first (please correct me if I’m wrong) on-screen victim.
Whatever it is, it doesn’t matter. The movie is nonstop confusion and entertainment from beginning to end. It’s fun, brutal, smart, and is a great reminder of what the good life can do to you. I personally think Pat simply had a bit of cabin fever. Sounds weird, doesn’t it?
Well, look at what he was surrounded by. The same arrogant, rich-boy snobs every single day, exactly like him, but nothing like him, the fiancee that’s everybody else’s fiancee, just his. The office that’s everybody’s office, just his. (See where this is going?) It could drive a man crazy.
Christian Bale was beautiful. Willem Dafoe was beautiful. Reese Witherspoon was irritatingly beautiful. Jared Leto was hilariously beautiful.
All in all, it’s a good movie that’s well-worth watching once and over again.
I count this in my horror movie collection, i dont care if someone calls it a thriller or whatever THEY ARE DEAD WRONG! this has horror written all over it, and it was created in such transgressive emotion. I just started reading the book, and Bateman’s escapism is along the lines od ted bundy and jeffery dahmer. I myself am fascinated by serial killers, though the only thing i dont like is all the glorified ones in films repeat themselves with their actions. Rape, cutting up bodies, eating parts etc etc.
Other than that i loved the small things, the attention to details. The demented craving to have something as minascule as an eggshell colored business card with watermark, was great. And im aware most of these things come from Bret Easton Ellis’s great writing. One of my favorite HORROR films of all time.
Christian Bale deserves an Oscar
American Psycho
02/02/2010
American Psycho is based on the insanely gory and controversial book by Brett Easton Ellis. The author has had several of his books made into movies such as “Less than Zero”, “Rules of Attraction”, and 2009′s “The Informers”. American Psycho is a book some thought to be unfilmable, but writer and director Mary Harron brought the vile character of Patrick Bateman to life in movie that is more of a dark comedy than your average horror movie.
Harron was also able to get such name actors as Reese Witherspoon, Willem Dafoe and Jared Leto. Not to mention Christian Bale, a largely unknown actor at the time, who landing the role of Patrick. Although Bale has been acting since the late 80′s in such films as “Newsies” and “Swing Kids”, it wasn’t until “Psycho” that he really started to appear on people’s radar. His performance was nothing short of spectacular. If you really want to see a shocking comparison of his work, watch “The Machinist” and “Batman Begins” back to back. Bale is a man fiercely loyal and committed to his craft.
Set in the late 1980′s New York financial district, American Psycho is a vicious satire on 80′s materialism and extreme narsarcism. Patrick Bateman is an investment banker for Pierce & Pierce, where everybody looks the same and it’s all about how big your ego is. In an early scene we see Patrick, in his high rise apartment, go though his morning routine and in a voice over he says, “There is an idea of a Patrick Batemen, but I’m simply not there” If there is any emotion Patrick shows its greed and disgust. When his nightly blood lust starts to take over and he states “my mask of sanity is about to slip.” He is sent over the edge by a business card. All the guys are showing off their new cards when colleague Paul Allen sends Patrick into a panic with a card that is better than his. This cannot stand and Paul eventually gets and axe to the face.
To fill out the 80′s vibe there is a lot of hit music played and talked about during some of most important scenes in the film. Huey Lewis and the News, Phil Collins and Whitney Houston to name a few.
Reese Witherspoon has a small part as Evelyn, Patrick’s so-called girlfriend, who is always badgering him to get married. Patrick really couldn’t care less about her and is only going out with her to “fit in”. Besides he has a mistress named Courtney. Jean his secretary is the most down to earth and “real” person in the film and in Patrick’s life. Jean agrees to dinner with him, but at his apartment he can’t go through with killing her and tells her to leave. Although when it comes to prostitutes he has no problem killing them. In one of the most insanely crazy scenes I’ve ever seen, Patrick fully nude and covered in blood chases a prostitute through his apartment building with a chainsaw. Bale completely inhabits this role and is totally insane. The final third of the film shows that Patrick has completely lost it and bears his soul to his lawyer’s answering machine. What happens the next morning really drives home the themes of the film.
The novel is extremely explicit in the violence and gore, while the film mostly leaves it to your imagination. The real horror comes from the character of Patrick Bateman, who seems to channel Hannibal Lecter in some scenes. There was an absolutely dreadful sequel made in 2002. It didn’t have any of the cast and crew from the original and is just pure trash. The original film made my list for best films of the decade for the 2000′s and continues to be one of my personal favorite films.
A classic. Christian Bale’s performance once again is nothing but great. He does such an awesome job of showing that he can be a psycho killer and his performance really drives the film. This is such a great film. You need to check this one out if you haven’t already.
Excellent movie loved the kills.
Love it! Christian Bale is amazing in so many of his films, this one definitely included. Haven’t read the book yet, but now plan to.
Dis movie jus got me entered in2 d bale fanclub……D movie solely n thoroughly belongs 2 him…….most of d gore happens off screen bt its presence jus lingers around…….nt a CLASSIC perse bt definitely worth a watch…….
One of my favorite movies of all time. This is Bale’s best performance he’s ever given. The rewatchability of this film is amazing, and it’s also one of the most quotable films ever made.
Nearly perfect.
I can’t help it: I hate this movie. I really, really hate it. IMO it’s an incredibly terrible adaptation of my #1 favorite book of all time which I’ve read about 10-15 times (in German and English).
Of course, the cast itself is great, the 80s settings look nice and the camera work is pretty fine, but compared to the magnificent book it’s just pure crap.
Things I hate about it:
- Christian Bale’s silly overacting is so incredibly annoying, it’s hard to take.
- The pacing is very slow and tedious; it’s often extremely boring and uninteresting.
- The book is shocking, thrilling, amusing and highly entertaining. The movie is not shocking, not thrilling, not amusing and absolutely not entertaining. It’s just lame.
- Harron was definitely the wrong director for this adaptation. I don’t know if she either disliked the book or didn’t understand it but it’s pretty clear that she had just no respect for it.
I know that many people love this movie and I also know that many people think that I am an idiot for not liking it. Well, I couldn’t care less. I hate it, basta.
`American Psycho’ is a 2000 film that is mainly set on Christian Bale character Patrick Bateman on the physic mind that has of murdering women & man for the bad side of pleasure & his excitement of being a serial killer (deep down inside of himself), while the movie debuted at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival with very positive review, especially for Christian Bale as I thought his performance was disturbing/darkly hilarious turn as serial killer/Manhattan business & was deeply messed up person, while Christian Bale was the one to play the perfect Patrick Bateman.
Its blends of elements of horror, satire, serial killings and black comedy which was terrific for this set & style of the movie, as it was all in his end made very unique & make you think of other people who may think just like Patrick Bateman and will just stay killing people for the fun or pleasure of it. The Movie is funny but with scary & bloody shots in the film & with great taste of thrills, dark humor, wit & a clever, sick & twisted storyline/plot and shows of a great & outrageous set of psychologist crazy sick mind, but I think with a two personality disorder for & with no human emotions Christian Bale plays the perfect performance or his career, what made him & that I think no one else could have played that role better than him (but you never do know really).
I have to say when first watching this film I thought oh it going to be little blood & murders & more on the comedy side (which there’s nothing wrong with that), but it had the right amount of ace bloody body counts of crateful murders, as the movie is a great set for cinema/movies of 2000-2010 of the decade of Horror, Thriller & Psychologist movies& also I have to say it’s got some great sex scene & would be an excellent sick porn that is also erotic, but I know it’s a movie & I love & respect the art form of the movie & what they did to make it this fanatics & I enjoyed I moment soo well done to the cast Christian Bale (of course), Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Bill Sage, Chloe Sevigny, willem Dafoe, Cara Seymour, Samantha Mathis, Matt Ross, Reese Witherspoon & Jared Leto on their acting was super brilliant and wonderfully directed by Mary Harron.
I went into this flick with pretty high expectations, and although they were not met fully, I did enjoy this piece. Patrick Bateman is fun to watch and gives us a very original serial killer. He reminded me a lot of about 90% of Jim Carey’s characters, but made even better by welding an ax or a chainsaw. He makes the film comical with his habits and actions, his memes are hilarious and show us just how messed up the guy really is. We never get a real reason as to why he does what he does, and that in my opinion worked well for this film. Bravo to Christian Bale for his performance in this film, I was surprised and impressed.
The direction in this film is positive, and it paces well. The kill scenes were pretty damn awesome, and did not stray away from the gore. I personally wish we would have had more kills on screen, it would have made this film a more enjoyable watch and helped it’s pacing a bit given we go for great lengths at times between kills. The writing is well done, and I applaud the film’s screenwriters for adapting this very well from it’s novel by Bret Easton Ellis. The way writer/director Mary Harron used actor Willem Dafoe as Det. Donald Kimball was genius, with us never knowing if he knows Patrick Bateman’s crime, he if thinks Bateman committed the crime, or if he has no clue of Bateman committed the crime or not. She went so far as to film each scene with Dafoe three times, with him portraying each one of the three elements I just mentioned each time, and then editing all three together, keeping the viewer in limbo. Genius.
There is not much I did not like about the film, only that I wish we would have had more kills which would have improved the pacing of the flick.
Overall, this is a good watch that I recommend to all, even non-fans of the horror genre. This flick works as a drama as well, so great character performances ensue. Be prepared for one of the most unique serial killers to grace the screen.
A good rendition of probably the most graphic novel I have ever read. The novel makes the movie look like a Disney flick. Ellis is one of my favorite authors (Im a woman too, shocker!). Great gore and creepiness and the satire is what takes this movie from just good to great. The scene with the business cards is fantastic. The book puts more into the mindset of Patrick, so I think if you liked the movie, you should read the book, it’s hilarious. Be ready for entire chapters about nothing else other than Genesis and Huey Lewis and the News.
What makes the movie great is the ending, where you are left wondering what actually happened. There is no definitive answer.
This movie confused the crap out of me and just overall left me wondering if he imagined everything. Wasn’t really impressed at the movie itself but man did Christan Bale give an amazing performance. He just flat out nailed it. If anything this movie is a must watch JUST for his performance.
This is one of the greatest movies EVER. Christian Bale=brilliant. Amazing, Amazing, AMAZING
Well when I saw this film on the shelf at the video rental store I was wondering…what is American Psycho? Then I read the back and it seemed to be a slasher film set in the 80s but when I rented it and watched it it turned out to be much more than that. This was a journey into the mind of a killer. Patrick Bateman was the perfect example of a true killing machine and no one knew it because he was so well respected. Anyway if you are a fan of films set in the 80s or just serial killer films or psychological thrillers you will enjoy this one for sure. This is a mix of psychological thriller and slasher. Anyone who is a fan of those 2 subgenres will enjoy this.
Bale nails the role as Bateman and pushes this bloody film to a 10/10
The “Hip to be Square” murder scene is one of the best things I’ve ever seen! Christian Bale gives a fantastic performance, and there manages to be a strangely moral message to an otherwise rather disturbing film.
People seem to miss the movies message so let me clarify. The book was a satire about how consumerism and greed makes ones life empty. In the book patrick can’t help talking about what people are wearing but he doesn’t really know anyone on a emotinal leval. In the book like the film people constanly confuse him with other people. The reason for this is because no ones really paying attention to anything except there greed. The reason people don’t pay atteion when he does or says things is because they don’t want to “deal with it”.
Awful.
