This is the film that made me a true fan of Lucio Fulci. Great atmosphere + great gore = one of the best movies ever.
FULCI_LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved this zombie flick, it was just a gory messy entertaining thrill ride! I laughed I winced I loved it!! Why we don’t have directors like FULCI any more makes me wanna cry!! I give Paura nella città dei mor 10 rotting corpeses out of 10 rottin corpeses!!!
more violent and more evil feeling compared to most zombie flicks, definatly had some very very creepy and overall scary stuff.
I sometimes find myself not really enjoying the entertainment of some horror films, and in terms of fun and entertaining, this film doesnt supply that nor does it try to, it takes itself very seriously and holds nothing back.
Fulci at his magnificent best. Atmospheric with a real sense of unease.Features some real gruesome gore and for Fulci it keeps a decent pace. Some stunning scenes and memorable moments.
Fulci is God. This movie was fucking great (minus the ending… kinda quick and anticlimactic) The gore more than makes up for it though
I have to say. Italians, Know how to create phenomenal atmosphere. Lucio Fulci does just that in this supernatural thriller. The story centers around a priest who hangs himself in a cemetery which then unleashes a curse. Later on, this curse does involve the Undead, but they aren’t actually the main focus of the story until near the end of the film. I will say this movie does have some shocking moments, and though i won’t give it away, the first image of one of the female’s eyes bleeding in this film and what follows, will make you want to vomit. Yes the story gets lost in the film, and while the acting isn’t superior, they do a decent job. There are so many twists and turns and with the Argento type lighting and atmosphere you can’t really go wrong here. No, this isn’t “The Beyond”, nor is it “Dawn of the Dead”, but, if you go into this to be entertained while appreciating atmosphere and Italian cinema, I think you will find this Quite enjoyable.
Low on plot & off the charts in gore! It’s another Fulci classic, from the Italian master of splatter this one is sure to please. With some of the greatest gore moments ever on screen, can’t be missed.
Buy it.
girl sees dead priest, blood runs from girl’s eyes, girl vomits out her fucking guts!!! pimp movie watch it, dont think about it, watch it
this was a pretty good movie with some really gruesome old school effects. the brain squish, drill through the head, but the greatest was the girl vomiting up her own guts, they just kept comin out! i ended up lockin my windows and door just in case!
One of the best of all time. Just saw the BLU-RAY version. Horror movie orgasm. Blood, Hell, death, guts, brains, zombies and more. The chick vomiting her entrails may be the greatest scene in horror movie history…
Poor Bob. All he wanted was a little love… This is my favorite Fulci flick (try saying THAT five-times fast).
i came in expecting zombies so fuck this movie
What this movie lacks in characters, story, (and zombies), is completely made up for by the amazing gore and unsettling atmosphere. Go into this movie expecting nothing but a fun time, and that’s just what you’ll have.
Best Fulci film, great atmosphere, great gore, love the soundtrack. Everyone raves about Zombie2 or the beyond, but your missing the boat if you don’t watch this little gem!
Widely considered to be in the top tier of gorehound favorite Lucio Fulci’s work, City of the Living Dead is a supernatural horror film laced with bouts of explicit gore. Set in the sleepy New England town of Dunwich, a local priest commits suicide and opens he gates of hell, unleashing all sorts of ghastly chaos upon the residents as a psychic tries to seal them and put a end to the horror. One of Fulci’s strengths as a director is creating an appropriate atmosphere to suit the film and in that regard COTLD is one of his strongest efforts. The film oozes Gothic style and a feeling of impeding doom permeates. Another strength and claim to fame is his incredible use of gore, in that respect, COTLD has several set pieces that are notorious among gorehounds, particularity the nauseating entrail vomiting scene. Has a horror film the result is less successful; there are some genuinely frightening moments and the atmosphere is top notch, but the pacing is painful, leading to quite a few boring, shoddy stretches; likewise, while Fulci films are rarely known for their compelling characters, the ones featured here, not to mention the acting are particularly wooden and completely uninteresting. All in all I didn’t have an enjoyable time watching City of the Living Dead, it was pretty dull save for the aforementioned strong points, although die hard fans and Fulci devotes will want to check it out.
Just watched this for the first time. I’ve heard about the infamous gut spewing and drill scenes, but to see them come to life in all their gory glory is a sight to behold. This movie just oozes dread, the atmosphere of doom is suffocating, the soundtrack is the most spine chilling death knell you’ve ever heard. They sure don’t make them like this anymore. The story is incoherent but who cares when you have all this crazy and weird shit going on. Loved it and can’t wait to discover more Fulci.
Fulci’s best movie. The actors are douches though with some incredibly stupid lines!Classic film regardless.
First Fulci film I’ve ever seen and I enjoyed it. It’s a fairly straightfoward story, but Fulci’s direction and gore reinvent it in a most entertaining way.
Imagine a night on peyote and hell on earth!
Not one of my favorite Fulci movies (that’s a tie between Zombie and The Beyond) there are some good gory scenes but the main problem I have with this flick is there isn’t much in the way of zombies except for that scene in the bar towards the end and the zombies in the tomb. Not sure why they call this movie City of the Living Dead there’s only like maybe 10-12 zombies in the town
Probably not Fulci’s best, but still a lot of fun.
Super creepy atmosphere, great cinematography, and some classic scenes of gore.
I go into every Lucio Fulci film wiith an open mind. The guy makes movies for lovers-of-gore, and he enjoyed it while he still could; and sometimes, I find it possible to like the guy. I recently watched one of his earlier films, “Don’t Torture a Duckling”, and I thought it was pretty damn good. However, my latest outing, “City of the Living Dead”, is essentially my first not-so-good-time with a Fulci film. I expected it to be a fun zombie film, much like Fulci’s “Zombie”. And for the last thirty minutes or so, this movie was a fun zombie movie. But then consider the first hour, and you’ve got yourself a mess.
Some people love this movie, and most consider it one of Fulci’s better films. Oh…they may be right. I have yet to watch the man’s entire filmography, but I intend to put dents in my Fulci-filmography watching bit-by-bit. I’m not calling this undead horror romp a bad time, but seriously, it makes little-to-no sense. I don’t think it’s good cinema; not even good horror cinema. And I like horror movies a lot…just not ones that attempt to be something that they’re not.
And that’s a BIG problem with a lot of horror films these days; they try to add depth and storytelling that never quite reaches a good audience. Some people applaud Fulci for simply doing what he does best: work with good gore effects; but otherwise, he’s not a good story-teller or writer. But I wouldn’t call him a bad one either.
So now, on to the movie. The film, also known as “The Gates of Hell”, deals with the opening of the “gates of hell” after the suicide of a priest in a grave-yard. This awakens zombies, which walk out from their tombs and feast on the living. Better yet, we have characters who don’t want the situation to worsen; reporter Peter (Christopher George) and psychic Mary (Catriona MacColl). They must make a trip to Dunwich in order to close the “gates of hell” before All Saints Day. If they fail, then let’s just say, a sequel would have been made; and it might have been more exciting.
I didn’t feel involved with the film’s first hour, which as I mentioned, creates a mess out of the movie. Is it good story-telling? Is it bad story-telling? Who cares? There have been worse tales told, but this one just pisses me off a lot. If the film had, say, embraced its sillines and sub-genre of zombie horror, then maybe it would have worked. But no; Lucio Fulci attempts something more, and it will leave some people scratching their heads, some people fascinated, and others just-plain-pissed.
Hell, the only people who will find the tale a well-told one are the most devoted of horror fans. My suggestion to them is that they need to watch some better movies, perhaps from other genres. They need to know what good story-telling is and what is not. They probably know what good filmmaking is, and “City of the Living Dead” certainly has some of that, but it’s not good enough.
This is not a bad horror film. It contains some stunning, imaginative images; most of which are gory, gruesome, and gloriously macabre. I enjoy Lucio Fulci’s fascinations, ambitions, and intentions; but not always the final product that he creates. Go ahead and see “City of the Living Dead” if you must, but it really disappointed me. I liked how it looked, it had a good soundtrack, the dubbing wasn’t horrendous for half-of-the-time, but it has so much limited appeal, that I cannot, and will not, recommend it to many people. Lucio Fulci die-hards, perhaps, but who else? Well…you tell me.
Oh, and I forgot to mention one of the film’s redeeming, disgusting scenes; the one in which a woman pukes up her one intestines. Designed for gore-hounds; appreciated by gore-hounds. Win-win.
Lucio Fulci is a god. It does not have the chilling atmosphere found in “The Beyond”, but it makes up in the gore.
I wasn’t expecting this movie to be good, but i really enjoyed it. it had great death scenes and lots of gore.
You don’t watch Fulci for the compelling story line or excellent acting, you watch it for the gore and this is no exception. The story line is slow and plodding at times (I was also watching the uncut version, so not sure if that is the case in the edited one), the score is over the top but when it comes time to deliver the goods, Fulci doesn’t hold back. Not my favorite of his, but still some great gross out effects, just make sure you’re not eating when she starts spitting up her organs. Fun times…except for the WTF ending – even his explanation for it doesn’t make sense in the context of the plot…
