This movie is truly a creepy movie. not that scary but creepy. Naiomi Watts is a really good actress and, was brilliant in this movie!! Samara was frightening and the story 2 this movie was brilliant. Cant wait 2 watch the ring 2 2nite!!
I dont get how people love this movie. It just sucks ass so bad. There is nothing scary about it at all. The only cool part of the whole movie was when you actually saw what the movie was and even then it wasnt that cool. I really hope they stop making them.
The only movie I have ever seen that I can honestly say scared me. I can understand why some may not find it scary, especially if they’ve seen the thousands of rip-offs first.
The camera angles, the style, the feel . . . it’s all perfect. It had me hooked from the unnerving first scene until the horrifying middle, to the ending I wasn’t expecting.
It’s not for everyone, but everyone must at least see it if they call themselves a horror fan.
One of my favorite Remakes EVER!
I actully some-what liked this movie! I always thought of it to be stupid and just a dumb ‘ol remake, but watching it again…I loved it!
Samara Rules!

“I know there will be some misguided souls who stumble into a showing of THE RING believing that it’s either a film of Richard Wagner’s famous operatic cycle, or has something to do with Hobbits. Needless to say, they will be in for a surprise.
Gore Verbinski’s THE RING, based on an extremely popular Japanese film and novel, is a creepy and disturbing thriller that may do for VCRs what JAWS did for the ocean. After watching a recent sneak preview, I couldn’t help but imagine people all across the nation going home and throwing out their videocassettes and players, in fear that they might accidentally watch the tape that’s at the center of this movie.
The fast-paced suspense film begins in Seattle with an urban legend-type set up: two high school girls – Katie and Becca – are alone in Katie’s home at night. Conversation turns to a videotape that has a horrifying effect. Moments after you watch it, the phone rings, and a voice tells you, “Seven days.” And exactly a week later, you die. Katie reveals to her friend that she watched that tape at a cabin in the woods, seven days before. In a brilliantly edited sequence that is sure to make you drop your popcorn, Katie meets her fate, and we learn that the tale of the tape is no mere kids’ story.
Katie’s aunt, a newspaper reporter named Rachel (Naomi Watts), is asked by her sister Ruth (Lindsay Frost) to investigate the death, and she soon finds herself drawn into a world that’s as dark and claustrophobic as the grave. Pulled in with her are former boyfriend Noah (Martin Henderson), and their son Aidan (David Dorfman).
We see the tape in question early on, and at first it appears to be just a random series of weird images – a ring of light that looks like a solar eclipse, dead horses floating in water, a woman leaping from a cliff, a fly buzzing, a stone wall that encloses a well – playing out like a home movie made by David Lynch and Luis Buñuel. As the film progresses, however, we learn that the eerie black-and-white vignettes are clues to who made the tape and why. I’d hate to give away too much, so I’ll just say that the answer takes Noah and Rachel to an island where a horse breeder (marvelously played by Brian Cox, the original and best Hannibal Lecter) seems to be hiding a secret that’s by turns sad, and horrifying.
The acting in THE RING is fabulous throughout, with the actors stretching well beyond the caricatures all-too-often found in horror films and creating realistic, intriguing people. I’ve met and interviewed Naomi, and yes, she really is that beautiful and charming in person, and here she proves once again that she’s an outstanding actress. Martin Henderson, another actor from Down Under, is perfect as a videographer turned reluctant action hero, and young David Dorfman and Daveigh Chase are scary-good. Amber Tamblyn (daughter of multitalented actor/singer/dancer Russ Tamblyn) and the engaging Rachael Bella do a wonderful job of starting the movie off with a scream, Lindsay Frost shines in a small but important role, and Jane Alexander (an actor’s actor) is fun to watch as a doctor who knows more than she wants to. The direction is crisp, stylish, and sure-handed (hard to believe that this is the same guy who helmed MOUSE TRAP and THE MEXICAN). Even the lighting and sound are beautifully worked out; those elements make a sequence with a horse on a ferry especially chilling. Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack hits all the right notes, and the screenplay is smart, original, and pulls no punches. It’s worth noting that unlike most modern horror films, you won’t see people terrorized with knives or other conventional weapons, and there’s very little actual gore. What you do see, however, as well as what’s implied, may give you the worst case of the creeps you’ve ever had. I’m sure that some purists who’ve seen the original Japanese film (which spawned sequels and a TV series) will pick apart this version, but, for my money, this is one case where the remake of a foreign film can stand on its own merits.” –scott-390, imdb.com
I really did not enjoy this. Naomi Watts turned in a very good performance, but the main problem for me was the fact that it was so damn typical. At the time, Asian horror remakes weren’t as big as they are now, but even then the whole thing just seems too cliche. I’m definitely in the minority on this one.
Excellent.
this was the only j-horrror remake that was goooood
and the rest is just a copy of what the ring tried to do
Complete trash. This movie doesn’t deserve all the praise it gets. I saw this movie and laughed throughout. Only one part truly made me jump, the rest was just complete garbage. Definitely not worth it… I refuse to watch it again. I’ll be somewhat nice and give it a 2/10.
kinda good.
The Ring is a great horror movie and one of my all-time favorite scary movies. The story is exciting as the mystery unfolds. The acting s exquisite. Naomi Watts is the cream of the crop of actresses and Brian Cox is pretty awesome, too. Wow! What an ending! Love this movie.
I dont think this movie is all that scary. It is entertaining and had agood original story but it was not much of a horror movie in my opinion.
I thought that the ring was as scary as hell.
Storyline: A mysterious tape is created and who ever watches it gets a phone call from a scary little girl and dies in seven days. A woman watches the tape and searches for clues and tries to uncover the secrets of the little girl and her past. 10/10
Acting: The acting through out the whole movie was just amazing and the actors did a really great job. 10/10
Special Effects: The effects are sweet and everything looks real from the girl coming out of the tv to the mutilated faces of the death victims. 10/10
Best Scene: When the girl comes out of the tv and kills noah. 10/10
Ending: The little girl gets laid to rest…… unti the sequel of course.
7/10
Overall this movie had great scares and the atmosphere was well created. The little girl was as creepy as fuck aswell and I give this movie a 8/10
I know its like a classic and everything, but it was not like that amazing. There were some scary parts and liked the idea of a killer video tape, but i actually fell asleep during it. That should tell me something.
I liked this film but I felt it could of been a lot scarier and more creepy moments, there wasn’t much horror in this and it was more of a thriller. It did however have a good solid storyline and some good acting but I prefer the grudge over this as the grudge was a lot scarier I think I expeted more from this.

A great remake that exceeded my expectations. Gore Verbinski films each scene with such class its like watching a designer label horror film. The atmosphere of dread he creates is outstanding and thanks to such gifted actors , namely Naomi Watts everybody involved brings this remake to terrifying life. The video tape itself contains such unsettling imagery, add to the mix a creepy son , a rainy dreary Seattle setting plus Samara and the whole story behind the ring and its curse and you have one disturbing, creepy , genuinely frightening film. I loved It .
If you see the ring before you die after watching this I was prayig. I want to see the ring I want to see the ring. Please don’t torture me any more!!! Good story, one good actress but everything else felt boring and well not scary. Sometimes it had a creepy feel and the only part that I felt was good was the opening scene too bad it lasted for five minutes.
I’ve seen the Ringu and this one, and I really, really prefer this film. The Ring (US) is one of my favourite horror films ever. Here’s why :
Plot : Mysterious heart attack deaths triggered by watching a supernatural videotape 7 days beforehand. A reporter is thrust into action as herself, and her child, watches the tape. She must unravel the clues to save herself and her child before it’s too late.
Plot progression : Moves on at a steady and logical pace. Great.
Cinematography : Fantastic. The only “CSI:NY” bit I don’t like is that they reference images from the tape when Rachel comes across it. A minor point. The artwork, camera angles are great.
Acting : The creepy Samara, the resiliant mother, the laid-back ex, and the freaky 6th sense-like kid are do a great job.
SE : Special effects are great. They’re smash cut scenes showing disgusting degeneration of corpses. The bit where ***SPOILER ALERT!*** Samara comes out of the TV at the end is a bit meh.
***END OF SPOILER ALERT!***
Soundtrack : Fantastic. Visceral. Driving. Relentless. Sad, with a large undercurrent of maliciousness. Great.
Differences between US & Japanese original
Jap : uses techno music during tense rushing scene
US : uses orchestral strings to heighten tension
Jap : no SE, barely any makeup. Dead kid = Just some kid with her mouth open.
US : Gross, deformed, awesomely shocking green head.
Jap : Editing sucks. Go away.
US : Wonderfully done. Much more logically progressing plot. Hits great beats.
Jap : Not scary
US : Beautiful and scarier. Very arty.
Overall : Highly recommend. Please see it! If I were to make a horror film, i hope it’d be as amazing as this film, or SAW 1. I would only give out 10s to a few films, and this is one of them.
One of the best horror movies of the last ten years easily. It made me mad that a lot of movies copied this one. One of the few movies that has actually scared me in theaters.
i think that this movie was truly creepy. about the videotape just think of a little girl coming out of your television crawling like a freak!
The ring is an average, typical PG-13 remake. I admit the scares were done nicely and the acting was done great, but I thought the movie moved too slow. It really took awhile for us to be scared or get more into the story. I would definitely not give this film 4 1/2 skulls like BD did but I will give it 2 1/2 skulls out of 5. It’s an okay film that could have been much better.
There were some scary parts and liked the idea of a killer video tape but thats bout it
Probably the most intense and frightening experience I have ever had in a theatre. I was gripping my seat the entire time. Excellent in every aspect!
Chilling. I can see qhy alot of people basically shat themselves at this remake. This is where the Asian craze came from, I mean this was a success worldwide, and now companies still think it can happen. The movie worked so well too, because of the dampened dark feel it gave, with all the colours and the weather in the plot. Samara, the evil child is one scary little girl to look at. That end scene, is probably the most scary in the whole movie, and nothnig will ever have that same effect. The opening scene is one you’ll never forget either, and the movie itself held together right to the end.
The plot was obviously taken from “Ringu (The Ring)”, which is the Asian version, and also the original. The plot was pretty steady at keeping you glued to the screen, and not getting distracted. There was one plot hole right at the end, which I presume is going to be explained in #2.
The acting was very well. Naomi Whatts of course stole the movie, with her expressions and attitude changes throughout the movie. She exploited her character to excel;ency, and this is really one of her greater roles. Supporting cast also, were good.
Overall “The Ring” is the first and one of the best Asian remakes, and will definately give you chills for the next month and a half after watching. My rating is 3.5/5
pretty creepy little flick i realy enjoyed this movie and i hate japaneese remakes.
This movie ruined my childhood and it still gives me the creeps but i guess that is what makes a good horror movie, when it scares the shit out of you.
Haha funniest thing happened when i watched it the first time. Two of my friends and i had just finished watching it and then the phone rang!
hated it, im a purist when it come to this i have not seen a good American remake of a Japanese movie yet. oh and when Decaprio does akira im gonna fight some one, cause i know it will be terrible, and if its good your gonna have all these 13 year old kids that likes whatever hot topic tells them to like acting like they have always loved it and im gonna fight all of them….dammit…im enraged
A very interesting, creepy movie. I actually like this FAR more than the Japanese one. Ringu if you asked me was not scary it was as the remake. Ringu was pretty silly to me and I love Japanese Horror. This was a good film Gore Verbinski did a good job in this.
As good as The Grudge 1 and 2. Gore Vebrinski delivers a heavily atmpspheric thrill ride that everyone must get a taste of.
Very overrated.
I wanted to be scared by this film so much that i watched it in the middle of the night by myself. 40 minutes later… I FELL ASLEEP. Well, that about sums it up huh?
I liked this film. Watched the original sometime after seeing this and thought the remake was better, but that was because I already knew what was going to happen. Thought the original did a better job of explaining the curse, but this remake was very good. Hate to say it, but it does give me goosebumps and that is hard to do for today’s horror films. The best part was watched it with group of friends, all of us thirtysomething males, and in the middle of the film my friend’s phone starts ringing and we all just kind of look at each other with that I’m not gonna answer it look on our faces. That was funny as hell.
I really do not care for this movie at all and the fact that it started an endless run of Japanese remakes makes me hate it even more. This movie has basically no redeeming quality to it, it just flat out sucks and is overrated by a sh** load. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to you unless you were 12 or younger and had no true taste in horror movies. 3/10!
i liked this movie…its scary and inventive, and a good remake on top of that…Verbinski knows what he is doing and i applaud him for that!

I wonder if GRUDGE4life liked this movie and thought it was scary and inventive?
That comment aside, the Ring is the shit. Way better than the Japanese version. Not to say the Japanese one sucks, it just feels cheap and didn’t really grab me the way the remake did.
This movie easily reinvents the old thriller/detective style of horror movies that was created with the original Omen film. On top of that, it was genuinely creepy.
Too bad it made way for a shitty sequel and a bunch of other half-assed, Japanese remake, cash ins.
It was alright. If you’ve seen ringu, then it really dulls the experience, so i feel like i’m being generous here. it’s overhyped imo.
The Ring was the first horror movie I ever watched, and it did nothing to disappoint me. Prior to watching, I heard countless stories about the film that was the ‘must see horror movie’ of the year. And after viewing, I was obsessed. Not just with the franchise, but also with the horror genre!
What never ceases to amaze me about this film, is the intricate detail that went into it. I don’t think there has ever been another horror movie that had so much put into it. There were mock tapes released, mysterious websites, urban myths created, all just to build hype.
Within the movie itself, there are so many layers, so much to watch for. With each viewing i discover something new about this film that gives it more depth and interest. And the best part? It is never boring. This is how ghost-horror should be made!
This movie remains and will probably always remain my favorite movie of all time, and in my writings I aspire to create something even close to it.
i love this movie i have watched it over 30 times and i never get sick of it
Pretty good movie.
overrated and very dissapointed!!!
it was pretty good
The Ring is freaky, scary and distubing horror at it’s best! The Ring is original, not like all this other American crap that was out at the time, it’s actually scary. I am not one to be scared easily, but this freaked me out for days. You’ll never go to sleep in a room with a TV when you’ve watched this late at night! Naomi Watts does a great job, she is a wonderful actress and makes The Ring what it is today, a great modern chiller! The Ring has one of the most disturbing creatures I have ever seen. The wet “ladie”, crawling out of your TV set, killing everyone in her path. This movie IS disturbing, take my work for it. You’ll watch The Grudge with ease after this freaky fest!
9/10
This movie scared me when i was little and its a great remake!
Very atmospheric, and somehow scary, even without blood or violence, but it has some plot-holes in my opinion. If you have to duplicate/show the tape to someone why isn’t the curse lifted from Rachel when she duplicates the tape or when she shows it to Nolan, but is lifted later, when she enters the well?
This movie did not hold through the test of time. I tried to watch it last night, and got so bored I turned it off. Anyone want a free DVD?
So it’s PG-13, who gives a damn? This movie is SCARY as hell. Very creepy and and weird. Very mainstream but still recommended to anyone.
Besides the uncalled flashbacks, a successful and well-performed remake that possibly beats the original. Throughout uncomfortable and dread inducing, executed through a quite suggestive and unobtrusive narrative.
One of the best horror movies ever made. The little girl freaked me out, Naomi Watts played her part perfectly and the storyline was really tight – for a horror movie.
I enjoyed The Ring. The beginning and end are truly scary but some of the in between was just boring.Still interesting a lot of the time though.I thought the second film was better.Just because it had more going on.
A ridiculous concept if you think about it all too much, but an entertaining movie and very well made. I found the original a little bit creepier, (and enjoyed the slightly more twisted ending better), but it’s one of the best American remakes from the J-Horror genre.
A great psychological horror, one of the best of the genre.
I hate it when a horror movie is PG-13 but must admit this one was pretty good but people must stop calling it the scariest movie they have ever seen because that is pure bullshit.
way to overhyped
Why such a high rating? This has nothing on the original. It’s pretty much a scene by scene remake. The only difference is they Americanised it (so gone is all the subtlety that made the original good).
Compare the original ending with the remake ending. The remake uses too much cgi and when you see her face it’s not scary it’s laughable.
I thought this movie was suppose to be scary and entertaining.I found the premise a good Idea so I watched the Japenese one first then this one a day later and I thought both were overhyped not my kind of film.I get it though just didn’t care for it.
A pretty stupid concept but it did scare me so it gets points for that
Not sure why this movie got to me. It may have been my state of mind at the time but I did have a couple of hours where I was not in love with the TV static. I never saw the original so I can’t judge this as a remake but I would say this is one of the better mainstream horror movies.
Everybody said this was scary when it came out and still they say that , so i checked it out and….. this was not even a horror more of a drama-thriller and i found boring and far from scary.
It was crap as a Japanese horror and it was just plain shit as an American remake stay away from this film at all costs.
What the Hell? What is this peice of crap? Why do you people think this is scary?
The only thing scary about this movie is of course Sahara everything else is irrelevant. The way she walked towards the TV was pretty freaky to me. But all in all its just another asian-horror remake, same old, same old.
Not scary but it’s still an excellent movie.
I’ll probably get alot of shit for this but this movie was scary! Although i thought that when i was 10 when i first saw it. It creeped me right out. However now, i watch it all the time and nothing. Its one of those thrillers that you watch once and it looses its magic. Not like those classic horror movies that are scary every time you watch them. As much as crap this film gets, i still like it.
Great movie!!!!!
It creeps the hell out of me all the times…
Striking visuals and an unsettling atmosphere means this movie continues to stand out amongst carbon copies of Asian horror remakes. More details here:
http://thewolfmancometh.com/2010/04/06/the-ring-2002/
this film was just a wast of money if u want to watch this film i would say go out and find the original jap version as its so mutch better its a lot more darker and creeper than this and a hell of a lot more freaker and scary the only bad thing is the jap version only has english subs but thats it
I can’t believe people that think the original was better then this??!! What is wrong with you?!!! The original has no atmosphere, horrible cinematography, poor acting and the girl just looks like a regular little girl making a face!! This version is WAY above and beyond the original, they’re not even in the same league! Don’t waste your time with the original, just watch this one…FAR SUPERIOR!!!!!!
not a bad movie, and not a bad remake, but not as good as the original. this has too much hollywood gloss on everything, and i don’t like that. Watts was good, but something was missing from her acting in this movie.
The Ring is one of the first Japanese horror remakes I’ve seen, and I think The Ring is far superior to the original! The cast is perfect too! Naomi Watts is a great main character, the atmosphere is creepy, and the cinematography of the film is extremely impressive. This is one of the few horror films I could watch more than a few times over again.
I’m not gonna lie… first time I saw this movie in theaters… SCARED. THE. EVER. LIVING. SOUL. OUT. OF. ME. (I’m talkin’ knees in seat, hood up, head down, hands covering ears and eyes at the same time, hummin’ happy sunshine songs scared.)
Now it’s one of my faves. Don’t watch it too often mainly cause the thought of Martin Henderson dying without me sleeping with him at least once hurts me deep down inside… but an occasional watch (jumping when the closet opens on mummy-girl) is always good.
… poor horsey. Damn you Samara, damn you I say.
Just watched this movie again on the weekend after not having seen it for a couple of years. It scared the living hell out of me the first time I saw it and it still manages to give me the creeps. One of the rare times I feel a remake has surpassed the original (and I do like the original a lot!). Naomi Watts is outstanding, one of my favourite actresses. Love the mood and the feeling of increasingly impending dread this film manages to convey. I love me some violence in horror films, but I love that this film manages to get under my skin and disturb me with very little violence or gore.
THIS MOVIE IS A MUST SEE HORROR CLASSIC MANY HORROR FANS LOVE THIS MOVIE! I REALLY LIKED THIS MOVIE IT WAS CREEPY IN A GREAT WAY.
must say pretty good for remake i love the orignal tooo
Best PG-13 horror flick ever
Very good! Atmospheric, intense and very creepy.
I quite liked it – it was tense and unpredictable. I was expecting a little bit more at the end though, I felt as though it had been building up to soemthing that never came. The Well scene was good, I kept thinking something was going to happen to Rachel.
7/10
i really loved this movie, thought it was creepy as and the scary affect was really good!
i haven’t seen the japanese version but keen to.
I think this is one of the only decent remakes to come of an originally Japanese horror film. I think they did a great job, creepy, and Naomi Watts is an excellent actress. I think I might actually prefer it to the original. Might being the key word there.
Finally a well done remake, great, excellent from every point of view, history, suspense, horror, all together. I really love this movie, I never tire of seeing. Although the original is also very good.
This film set the bar in it’s genre. What other pg-13 movie that can scare the crap out of you and make you unplug your appliances before going to sleep? Perfectly done with great actors and none of the traditional horror components. Although the way it was shot reminds me of PULSE in a big way. Blue filters over everything.
As much as I enjoyed the original, the prequel and the Korean remake – nothing, absolutely nothing comes close to the American remake (which was the first Ring-themed movie I’ve seen), one of the very movies that almost scared me to death. I’d even say that watching it at the theater back in 2002 was the scariest in-theater-experience of my life.
Not as atmospheric and subtly suspenseful as the original, but rather shockingly scary and impressively frightening, including many scenes that still creep the shot out of me (the opening, the short girl-in-the-cupboard scene, the horse suicide, the bath electrocution, a few terrifiying dream sequences…).
Naomi Watts’ performance is stunning,
Hans Zimmer’s score is extremely haunting,
Bojan Bazelli’s camera work is tremendously powerful
and Gore Verbinski’s direction is almost flawless (this guy seriously needs to do at least one more horror movie).
We ge to see loads of creepy settings (cabin #12, the farmhouses and barns on Moesko Island), a few great special effects, some great lighting and some wonderful colours (most notably the fiery tree).
The script is brilliant and the dialogue is absolutely neat.
An outstanding movie and one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Thumbs up!
Jennifuru Approved.
I have not seen the original Japanese version of this film, even though I want to, so I will only review on the actual movie. It is good, no denying that. If I had a taste for horror movies back then and been old enough to go, I would’ve seen this movie in theaters and promptly unplugged every single electronic appliance I owned as soon as I got home.
This movie honestly scared the shit out of me the first time I watched it. It’s one of those movies that either scares the shit out of you or it doesn’t scare you at all. I was only of the people who were scared out of their minds watching it. It was a beautifully executed film with good actors and a nice dose of horror. It makes me want to get a hold of the original and compare them for myself.
We have proof here, that a movie doesn’t need to be R rated to be an amazing horror. VERY creepy special effects, and I love the mystery in the film.
This is one of the best horror movies I have ever seen, and I have seen quite a few lately. The fear in this film is palpable and when we finally see the titular Samara climb out of the well, the urge to jump is overwhelming. I loved the concept of the videotape and how it kills you in seven days if you don’t make a copy of it. The little girl who played Samara also did an excellent job!
Great flick. In my top 5 for greatest horror movies. There is an inescapable doom throughout this movie with no shortage of scares.
How dare they write “Not since the Exorcist has a film been so scary” that’s such horseshit!! They wrote the same thing on the DVD cover for Insidious. That’s such a load of shit! Neither film is even remotely scary, I remember seeing The Ring in theaters with my girlfriend and being so fucking bored. This is a god awful, piss poor excuse of a movie and it makes me sick that so many people praise this steaming pile of shit. This is not horror people!!!! Neither is Insidious, Paranormal Activity or any of those other watered down pathetic excuses for “horror” movies. Stop feeding the trolls at Hollywood, stop supporting garbage like this!!!!!
It can be Boring at times but it’s still scary. Honestly I think the original is better but I still it’s The Ring is worth a watch.
It can be Boring at times but it’s still scary. Honestly I think the original is better but i still think The Ring is worth a watch.
Good horror movie one of the best remakes ive ever seen.
I do NOT think that this movie is “Truly terrifying” as the cover says. In fact, I found it quite boring. Sure, you have the creepy little girl that crawls out of the TV and kills you, but that isn’t until the end of the movie. The only thing that I found even remotely creepy other than Samara, were the flashes you got to see of the dead people. Other than that, the movie was a waste of time and 115 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back… I guess its a true story though, because that movie made me die… OF BOREDOM.
This was a good movie; it had a good storyline, scary scenes, good acting, and more.
