Epic! That’s all I can really say about this movie. I have never been a huge fan of fast motion zombies (seeing as it would be physically impossible i.e. rigor mortis) but this is really good. I really like how they technically aren’t zombies at all thus justifying their speediness. Strong acting, excellent direction, nothing more to ask for. A little slow paced I suppose for all you people who keep going to see Saw movies. But that’s not my business. This movie is great.

This is what horror movies should look like. Not only did it make a zombie attack realistic, but it also had great structure and great acting. I was impressed with the moral and existential questions that were being brought up through the entire movie. While watching this movie I turned to my friend and said this isn’t a horror film it’s sci-fi because it is actually good. This movie has finally raised the bar for horror movies around the world. I hope that people try to make more movies like this.

Quite possibly the smartest of the zombie genre. It has everything and more. Awesome story line brought to life by a great cast. I truly do appreciate the underlying messages as well. I loved the reason for the outbreak, very original, very scary and very possible. If the world were to be taken over by zombies of infected people…I could see it happening this way.

28 DAYS LATER is one of the “better” modern versions of a zombie film (compared to all the stinkers that have come out since George Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) ….. I was glad to see zombies who behaved differently this time (symbolic of what we’ve become as a society – fast and brutal) ….. and everyone involved (from actors, special effects, etc) does a top notch job delivering a great film on a modest budget (compared to all the 100 + million costing stinkers we’ve seen released over the last decade) …… my ownly complaint is where the things slowed down too much 2/3rds into the film (fortunately this doesn’t last long)!

I watched this when it came out and i have to say i was pissed off. The movie seemed like a let down. Did not really seem gory enough of fun enough, and maybe intense enough for me. Then i rewatched recently and found it ok and the story was better. The faults i found in it the first time were better this time knowing the type of story it was. It is pretty good and most people will like this movie.

“This film is about a virus, ‘Rage’ virus that makes the infected person mad with extreme rage and hungry for blood. Within 28 days one outbreak in London caused entire Britain dead or evacuated leaving behind a blood-thirsty infected population and a handful of solitary normal persons. Civilization came to a halt, society got destroyed while those limited survivors fight for existence among frequent attack by the vicious victims.

Sounds familiar? Then what makes “28 Days Later…” a classic among a horde of zombie/biohazard movies? Simply a touch of art that Danny Boyle is able to bring what others could not. The others focus too much on extensive, special-effects-controlled, gory action sequences between infected and normals, with heavy background music. But here there’s always a tinge of sadness, emptyness, helplessness. Consider that empty London scene with that background music. We found out there’s much else to show than just electrifying action or gore to describe the picture of life in this condition that these movies talk about.

There are mistakes and loopholes in this movie. But that couldn’t weaken the otherwise tight-gripping storyline. The greatest achievement of this movie is to make one viewer stay neutral throughout the film, without taking any side in the first place. Because the virus we talk about is simply used as a metaphor. ‘Rage’ is shown as a social disease. That makes it a ‘serious’ film, not a flick. Every person, even the harshest critic of zombie horror movies should watch this.” –shanfloyd, imdb.com

28 days later is far better than the sequel. I loved the story line. They weren’t really zombies. Just infected with Rage. Amazing affects to this movie. The ending scenes were great. So much about this movie I just love. A definite 10/10.

One of the few good horror movies of this decade.

I also think, that this could happen in real life.
    Thhe desease is like rabies.
One bite means you’re infected && you go insane with rage.

But all in all this movie was good.
Could have more gore in it though.

I’m willing to say this is the movie that got me into horror. I was a fan of it before with some classics like Alien and A Nightmare On Elm Street, but this movie managed to change that like into a love. Also, this boosted both Danny Boyle as one of my favorite directors, and Cillian Murphy as one of my favorite actors. And while the ending is a tiny bit disappointing, the rest of the movie is incredible.

A bloody brilliant horror film. Even if it’s NOT a true ZOMBIE film. With above average acting, a well wrighten script and directing that leaves you wanting MORE. Danny Boyle took a huge risk doing a film like this and it paid off, I highly recomend 28 Days Later to any horror fan and even those who useuly are not fans of the genre. I give 28 Days Later 10 rage infected monkeys out of 28 rage infected monkeys. :D

good suspense movie, needs less stupid characters. 28 weeks later is a billion times better. hated the little girl and how she ended up being as bad ass as an infected. how did that dude who couldn’t even climb all the way up a bunch of stairs end up being able to pwn a small battalion of soldiers? what happened to the infected chimps? go rape the gay cook if your that desperate for sex. and don’t think that they just want to repopulate the country…. if that were so they would just rape the adult chick. it was an okay movie…… not worth buying.

Being contaminated, infected by an uncontrollable force like a virus, is a chilling thought. We can’t even cure the common cold, and suffice to say would be screwed if a degenerating, cannabalistic disease was unleashed on humanity. 28 Days Later brings fear of infection into the 21st century and in post 9/11 paranoia. I love the children, and the music is gritty and foreboding. The film is more than a genre piece and can scare horror fanatics and suzie home-maker.

Every now and again a movie comes along and changes everything, and since this movie there has not been to many zombie films that have slow zombies. even thou the infected might not be classified as zombies they’re close enough to be compared to. and as far as this movie goes it is a must see bloodbath that redefined horror.

This is a solid movie all around. While I was expecting more of a standard zombie flick going into the film it turned out to be completely different in its focus and take on the genre which was quite refreshing. It had more depth to the plot than just zombies attacking and the zombies were actually fast and intelligent for a change. I was drawn in by the characters and found that I actually cared about their survival in the British wasteland that they found themselves trapped in. This was one good zombie movie and it should be seen by all fans of the genre.

This will forever be remembered as one of the best zombie movies ever. This film, unlike any others of it’s kind, has a story that allows the audience to really make a strong connection with the characters and care about whether they will live or die. The feeling of the film is perfect, it is unsettling, it makes you feel alone and tense. Which is the how any great horror movie should be. It looks like nobody is around and from the beginning it lets you know that nothing in Britain would never be the same. Very good film, very entertaining. However i could live without seeing Cillian Murphy’s johnson in the beginning….

as perfect a zombie movie can be. decent and somewhat plausible zombie virus origin. awesome atmosphere, as soon as cillian murphy wakes up in the abandon hospital i instantly bought that the whole country was deserted and/or undead. love the cinematography, it’s the only zombie movie that comes to mind that’s actually beautiful. characters are well played, even the supporting actors are likeable. and the director is the man. danny boyle has been as consistent a director as you can be. and as versatile. i mean if you told me the guy that directed trainspotting was making a zombie movie, i wouldn’t have believed that it was going to turn out this well, and definetly not as well as it did. love the zombies/infected themselves, they’re ridiculously fast, and they projectile vomit their infected blood like some kind of human snake. all in all, my favorite zombie movie. most believable and established atmosphere of any zombie movie to date. and it was the first movie to have someone blind and kill someone with two thumbs through the eyes. LOVE THIS MOVIE.

Excellent horror flick. More of a zombie film although Danny Boyle denies it. But just the premise of infected individuals who spiral into an unstoppable rage to destroy the uninfected is truly terrifying. The film is original, unique, provocative and brilliantly directed. It’s also the breakout role for extreme hottie Cillian Murphy and features some of the most scary horror films ever seen on screen.

28 Days Later shows that George A. Romano doesn’t get to have all the fun with the zombie genre. I have tons of respect for the zombie flicks that came before this 2002 flick, but after seeing this picture, hands down this is a contestant for best zombie film. I love zombie films, (hence my BD name PaulZombie) I own as many as I can get my hands on and am always looking for more to watch. (If you know of any good ones message me please)

28 Days Later has been noted on a few sites as the most realistic zombie film; for the scary truth is this could happen. We’ll leave ones analysis of that statement at the door and focus on the movie.

I loved how Danny Boyle took how zombies are portrayed in George A. films and beefed them up. Romano films portray the undead as limping and slow folks. Not the scariest thing, considering a moped that has a max speed of 5 miles an hour could be a considerable getaway option. The critters in 28 Days are fast, thirsty and unyielding. The realism of the film I think is the kicker. This flick paints the bleak picture of the degeneration of social norms and corruption trends in which man follows when laws are no longer a binding contract. I simply can’t stop listing the pro’s of this movie, in fact I can’t think of any con’s. I suppose the only con I can really see to this film is trying to get a grasp on the situation. Waking up with no one around to find everyone is dead…kinda. Consider that my terrible attempt at finding something wrong with the movie. Hopefully that also makes it clear as to why I think this is the best zombie film out.

Though it seems far fetched to see a city overran by bleeding folks, if it were to happen I feel 28 Days Later paints the beautiful, grim picture of life with those without life.

Danny Boyle does it again! Danny Boyle redefines the average zombie film. With Great performances by Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris, the film takes a different approach to the run of the mill zombie genera. With its fast pacing and dramatic story this film completley outshines is predecessors.

One of this films greatest strengths is how it mixes its dramatic story line with terrifying scenes of despair and shear hopelessness. Cillian Murphy is also fantastic in the lead displays his ability at playing great dramatic characters.

What should be noted about this film is how fantastic of a director Danny Boyle is. None of the shots feel superfluous and the pacing is fantastic giving you periods of pure terror, while down the road we are learning about the characters and there individual stories.

The art direction is also fantastic some of the shots of London being deserted are astonishing. This movie is quite simply a masterpiece and should be recognized as such.

But I will say, zombie fan, horror fan, or neither of those, This film is a pretty deep portrayal of the human pysche in a time of danger and impending doom. Its scary, its real, and its emotional. 28 Days Later is not just a scary film, it has a huge amount of character. You relate to the characters and understand their actions. It’s a chillingly acurate portrayal of what some people would do after something utterly devastating happened in a country.. with the threat of spreading to other places. It really provokes the thought “Holy shit.. what would I do?” Seeing the characters go through life with the threat of the infected around them makes watching the movie intense, but the infected people are not the scariest part. The underlying darkness in this movie is phenomenal…. often times, it’s humans who should be feared.

The zombie who escapes at the compound really gives the men living there what they deserve. I also found it interesting that the zombies in this movie had more cognitive ability than zombies I’ve seen in other movies. I’m really excited to see 28 Weeks Later!

This movie has given me more nightmares than any other movie I have seen – and continues to do so, years after I have first seen it. Not all the dreams are of the infected – sometimes just empty streets or burning cities, and sometimes the infected are indeed after me in my dreams.

The cast is fantastic, and unlike a lot of horror movies out there, I actually cared what happened to them and was rooting for them.

While the chances of someone being able to run as fast as any healthy human while losing blood through every orifice imaginable is a bit iffy in the way of science, the infected are so bloody (harhar) scary that I’m willing to forgive that.

A zombie that’s actually scary. Never heard of that before. Danny Boyle creates a group of ruthless hordes devastating an almost hopeless society. Now, that’s terror.

Great addition to the zombie subgenre, 28 days later manages to be both scary and compelling. It made me feel for each and every character, all beautifully played by a most talented cast. However, what really makes this movie stand out is its very bleak plot, where mankind ends up being worse than the zombie menace.

Little can be said about this movie without me sounding obsessive. “28 Days Later” is indeed my favorite movie, and in my personal opinion, the most beautifully crafted artful masterpiece in film history. Every shot, even the more gritty ones, are absolutely magnificent. The acting is perfect. The dialogue is perfect. The suspense is spine-tingling. That utterly disgusting feeling of being absolutely and completely alone that lasts the first twenty minutes makes one contemplate every action they’ve ever committed in their lifetime.

The central theme of “a pandemic COULD happen, soon” scares us all. This movie uses this fear to both our advantage and disadvantage, captivating us in every way possible.

As I stated before, every single shot is breathtakingly beautiful. That’s why this is my favorite movie. Not because of the gore and ‘action’ and whatnot, it’s because of Danny Boyle’s ability to capture the most beautiful things in the most devastating situations.

Take the minimarket scene right before the tunnel sequence. In all this violence, death, carnage and destruction, Jim, Selena, Frank and Hannah can still make the most of it, creating one of the only musical montages I can stand in film.

It’s simply perfect, how everything is so real and so horrifically fantastic.

    Back to reality:

Let me point out a problem I had, not with the movie itself, but with the response from critics/vewiers etc.

Okay, people, get the fucking shit right: 28 DAYS LATER IS NOT A ZOMBIE MOVIE!!!

There is not one SECOND of this film that involves a zombie WHATSOEVER. The infected victims are very much alive. They never died, they never came back, and it doesn’t take a shot in the head to kill them.

The infected are living people, overcome by the rage virus. Without food, they die within twenty-eight days of infection. And they don’t come back.

So please, don’t categorize this movie with not half-as-good films as “Resident Evil” or “Dawn of the Dead”. “28 Days Later” is horrifying, realistic fictional art. It’s beautiful, touching, terrifying, intelligent, it’s everything perfect.

You can’t show me a better movie. There’s no such thing as perfect, except for this. This, I believe, is this only thing that exists that is ‘perfect’ by definition.

And thank you, Danny Boyle. “Trainspotting”, “28 Days Later”, and “Sunshine” are among the top ten movies I’ve seen. Thank you for this magnum opus.

in my mind i feel as if George Romero’s diary of the dead had a lot of influence from this, and if u can influence him then you dont really have to do much more but they did, with a great cast and great locations seeing england completely empty at some points, this takes the normal brainless zombie movie [ i love them just as much as the next person but you gotta agree theres not normally a whole lot to them] and makes its on sub genre, a quiet super creepy somewhat slow movie that will take you from complete silence to a zombie ripping off faces in seconds

28 Days Later sees itself as not so much as a horror movie, but more like an ultra realistic take on society just like it’s Great Great Grandfather Night of the Living Dead. Which in the world of horror movies is always a decent goal, however unlike Romero’s commentary back in the day which was subtle yet ever present, 28 Days later gets bogged down with trying to be two separate movies and it is in the this attempt that it surely does not succeed, however that is not to say that this film does not have its redeeming qualities as well, the acting by Cillian Murphy is not all that bad, but really when viewing other films he has done you see he has a better range than just being Jim the dullard. If this had been helmed by someone besides Danny Boyle, it would have fallen flat. While pacing has always been a complaint with the film, I ask any horror aficionado to rhyme off 5 decent Zombie films that did not run at a slower pace than your average horror film, slow pacing and zombie films are tied together like cutaways and ghost stories. That is the way it is and the reason for that is simple Zombies do not have any redeemable traits as they are currently presented so focus must be drawn elsewhere.

In the end the film is definitely much more enjoyable then the six million other pieces of supposed horror that get shovelled on to us daily. I personally did not enjoy the film, due to the fact I find it almost unwatchable from the moment the military intervene, but from an unbiased perspective it is an enjoyable little ride that gives the average Hollywood fan what they are looking for, as well it treats those of us who sample horror movies like some overpaid CEO samples there red wine to a more than acceptable level of originality and jumps, though I know 9 out of ten of us would claim that we haven’t jumped in years, but I know that is not true as I once saw a horror buff jump out of his seat because of the beaver in lake placid.
So from my opinion I would give the film three skulls, from an unbiased standpoint I believe it deserves four skulls.

I had only ever seen bits and pieces of this. But tonight, I saw it completely. It reeks of brilliance. There’s plenty of scary jumps to be had, buckets of gore and a glorious staged view of post-apocalyptic London. What raises this above the competition of British and international horror films of the past 20 years however is the acting. The four leads, Murphy, Harris, Gleeson and a film stealing Eccleston are terrific. You can get behind these guys (perhaps not Eccleston as much) and feel their plight. And it just so happens to have one of the best directors behind the camera too.

’28 Days Later’ is a 2002 Danny Boyle film which is about a rage virus that has breakdown in London & possible all over the world, that four survivors with the ruination of life’s try once knew. (As I’ve seen the Sequel ’28 Weeks Later’ they both seem pretty good film but I just don’t get the hype of them, as I found the original to be much better it’s not the greatest movie that I’ve every seen.)

The Film was very decent styled low budget British film that was a surprise hit & I wouldn’t call it a cinematic sort of film, but was an intelligent virus/zombie film that is very enjoyable, the directions by Danny Boyle was capture at the right moments in the movie & had a great theme & shot by shot direction (even though the film came out in 2002/2003 it shown pretty out dated but still brilliant take on directions), the movie was bloody & full on virus zombie action that will either scary you or make you laugh & it did both for me but it did make me think that this could possible happen in the near future as it no secret that asshole sincerest test on animals (as I study on animals at college) & they do use all sorters of that can infection use, the plot of the film was a prefect set on chills, thrills, depth with emotion & a journey on saviour and the ending was full on brutal, guts & blood goodness, was really frightening, tense & utley shocking/clever way to end this type of movie & had a terrific twist

(when I was young my mum said I should watch this movie & I wasn’t really into zombie movie until I turned 13 & now at age 18 founds this on VHS under some book & I though I might as well watch it and found it to be a great watch thanks to my mum.)

This is my favourite horror movie of all time and one of my favourite movies in general. It’s terrifying, intense, sad, happy and funny at times.
I’d like to start with the acting. Cillian Murphy is a very under-rated actor and I really believe his confusion and utter devastation at how the world has been turned upside down. I can feel how terrified he must have been to find London completely deserted. Also the two female leads were really strong and very well acted. The cab driver was very funny at points, possibly my favourite character. I won’t go into why I like him so much as I may ruin the story.
Secondly, there’s the plot itself. I know it’s not a traditional ‘zombie’ movie as the infected people are literally infected with this virus (like Resident Evil but they became zombies, right? So how does that differ from the concept of this movie?). The infected were super fast, super scary and super violent; ravenous for flesh and ready to tear anyone up. Completely unnerving. I also like how the virus itself was actually release; by activists trying to save living creatures but end up instead killing pretty much everything.
The way the movie was shot was amazing. A deserted London is terrifying especially if you’ve been to London first hand and witnessed what a madly busy place it is! The church at the beginning was so dark and intense filled with all those dead people…I also liked the alleyway chase scene with the gang of survivors trying to get the taxi running again before the infected got to them. CRAZY. The setting was pretty much pitch black but you could catch glimpses of shadows from street-lamps and the undead’s own creepy eyes.
The music was incredible. It goes from rock to classical to everything in between whilst fitting in with the movie totally.
The only bad point I can pick out from this is it can get kind of slow at points. But all of the above make up for it!
Danny Boyle is an amazing director. I’m a big fan of most of his movies (Trainspotting being one of my faves!)
If you want a change from the traditional lumbering zombie movies (not dissing Romero’s classics), then please, check out 28 Days and the sequel, 28 Weeks Later (which has the fantastic Robert Carlyle as the lead). You will NOT be disappointed!

First off it is NOT a zombie movie.

That being said this movie is awesome!

It manages to take a gradually staling genre and breath new life into it. The running plagued literally destroy the UK in a matter of a month and leave behind a smoldering hell hole that comes right from a Romero wet dream.

Well done acting, writing and special effects make this a must see for any horror fan or “zombie” sub genre fan. Also the commentary and special features are great as well.

  96. Avatar of John-of-the-Dead
    Posted By John-of-the-Dead on October 29, 2010 @ 3:07 am

I really like how this film strayed away from the “zombie” element that most people wrongly associate with this film. The “infected” in this film are NOT zombies! For one they are not “dead”, and they do not eat people, they simply kill other people and that is it. The “rage virus” they are infected with simply causes the person to exhibit extreme rage that forces them to kill at will, and with extreme prejudice. I really liked how this film had the “infected” running at full speed and being quite agile, it’s pretty darn frightening and another non-zombie element thrown into the film. Directed Danny Boyle wanted this film to have a zombie feel, but to not really be a film about zombies. Mr. Boyle purposely had the “infected’ suffering from a virus due to our current/recent fear of viruses and other unpleasant pathogens. A mere bite, scratch, or even drop of blood in someone’s mouth or eye can turn them into a rage-infected person, and this happens very quickly as well. I love it!

One aspect that makes this film great is Danny Boyle’s execution and direction. Right off the back this film has the feel of a Danny Boyle film. We are shown very awesome and wide-panning cinematography and an amazing score and if you know anything about Danny Boyle…he is all about great cinematography and a great musical score. The opening scene 28 days after the carnage caused by the activists is the epitome of “apocalypse”. We see Jim staring off into the once bright and flowing city that now looks more like a ghost town all while a very chilling piece from the band Godspeed You Black Emperor graces your ears. I must also commend writer Alex Garland for his amazing scriptwriting and his use of conflict as we view scenes of strangers banding together, starting to trust each other, and then having to kill someone they just started to like due to them getting scratched by one of the infected. I also found some of the final conflict very interesting as it regards finding hope in repopulating the world as they know it, although not everyone has the enthusiasm as those who are for it and it leads to some issues of how far you would go to sustain the human species. Interesting stuff.

This film is more than just a simple horror film, and I think that separates it from the rest of the pack and is why this film has received such great reviews. The entire second movement did not incorporate much horror into it, but was actually quite fun and took a break from the “infected” action. There is still a bit of suspense because you know at the speed that the “infected” move about…they can attack at any time. The second movement did remind me a lot of the second movement of Dawn of the Dead, in which the characters go about having some fun and enjoying the fact that they are the only people around. They raid stores and take what they please just like the survivors did in Dawn of the Dead, showing that not only is Danny Boyle doing this film as his own interpretation of horror, but he respects the genre and is giving something back to the fans.

I really have no knocks against this film, although I must warn you that aside from all of the carnage this film does tend to move slow at times. I do not personally see it as a bad slow due to the fact that this film has to develop it’s characters(Danny Boyle does things right ya know…) and is really meant to shock the viewer with the visuals and dialogue and help us imagine what it would be like to experience Jim’s situation. So for those of us who can turn on our brains and take in the required development then this film’s slow pace at times should not be a problem.

Overall, this is an excellent horror film that is sure to even please non-fans of the horror genre. This film gives us a cool origin for the carnage, and is a break from the typical zombie-action that this film gets wrongly associated with. Highly recommended to all.

Danny Boyle paints a beautiful picture of a society that has fallen into utter disrepair. It is visually stunning and its pace remains at a rather steady level for most of the run time, however it falls apart in the latter half. Now if one truly stops to notice it runs in a three act structure and each of the acts seems to mimic one portion of Romero’s of the dead films up to this point in history. The last portion of 28 Days Later is Day of the Dead and sadly it does mimic the quality as well as the other portions do and this where the film falls down and not even Christopher Eccleston’s turn as the squad leader can save the film from falling to the traps of conventional horror schlock. The film does wonders for a genre that has been depleted and quite frankly needs to be put in the attic until we can see some fresh takes, however it is far from a reinvention.

+ Puts a redefining, new spin on the Zombie genre and zombies themselves: The zombies/infected now run, which is far more terrifying, and can die without the need of a deadly blow to the brain
+ Great gore through necessary brutality
+ On one side shows the depravity of man in a state where the prolonging of survival must be attained by any means necessary
+ The film is not so much focused on the zombies or finding a cure, but primarily deals with the struggle for survival amongst individuals and a group

The Ultimate Movie Review! – http://tss5078.blogspot.com – @tss5078 – 28 Days Later is the brain child of Director Danny Boyle, who has might quite a name for himself over the last few years. It is also another post apocalyptic film that plays into people’s fear of the end of the world. Most of these movies suck, but Boyle knew this and made sure his movie didn’t. 28 Days Later follows the life of a survivor (Cillian Murphy) who wakes up in an empty hospital after an accident. He has no idea what’s going on, but soon learns the horrible truth. Boyle decide to film the movie as if he were following this stranger from a distance, with an outdated camcorder. It gives the movie a grainy, dark, 70′s style and fits right into the story. Cillian Murphy is great in his first leading role and you can see why he’s now a name in Hollywood. Overall, it’s pretty bloody and predictable, but defiantly not your typical end of the world film. The acting is top notch and the way it was filmed and directed make it something special.

Official Score: 5 / 5
