horrible
a classic
I jumped when the kid was under the table but that was it. This movie was a chore to finish and VERY predictable. The horror wasn’t glamorous but they still could have worked with it better. The Strangers was predictable and low budget but pulled of horror with a dark flair. This film totally blew and chance of inspiring fear when careless mistakes like showing a close-up of the dead boy to reveal his eye make-up looks like just that, make-up. Who helped this little ghost put on his eye liner? Was it his dead mother who for no reason at all makes a weird noise? And the worst thing of all, WHY ARE THEY ABLE TO SEE THE GHOSTS WHEN THEY PUT THEIR HANDS OVER THEIR FACE?! WTF?! At least 13 Ghosts had glasses. I will admit the scene where the old man is playing peek-a-boo nothing only to show it was the ghost for a split second in the reflection of the doorway, was excellent. Despite some aspects of this movie being good, it still sucked. Glitter on a turd.
This is one of my favorite horror movies. No movie has ever scared me as this one has.
This is one of those you have to focus on. Unlike a straight shot with one story, it is broken up into mini-stories of each character’s involvement with the supernatural element and how those stories intertwine. Also, one must read the prologue (It’s in Japanese, but there is a dubbed track for people who won’t like this movie.) to fully get what is going on.
The best thing about this movie is that the viewer is left on his or her own mind throughout the film. The movie leaves the audience to put the pieces together. Sorry, people, not everything is handed to you, so if you lack imagination or blew the experience watching the U.S. version (the Grudge) first, you probably will not enjoy this movie.
Ju-On has some of the most brilliant uses of scary imagery ever put to film. The visual style is done with such simplicity (very little CGI) that it makes one wonder how much we’re missing with so much dependence on computers, lately.
In summation, Ju-On provides its scares from wonder. It just shows you what happens and leaves you in the unknown as to what is happening and why it’s happening. The storytelling leaves you feeling exactly as the characters in the movie are… terrified of the unknown. Combine that with creepy (There is no better definition for the word) imagery and you have what most horror movies should strive to be.
Dude, this is the best movie ever. I dont remember if it is this one that I saw, or ju-on 2( if anyone could let me know that would be great), but it was soo funny. There was this part where a man was with this little boy in the house and the dead girl is coming down the stars all bloody, and then the boy is like meowing into the phone. I was cracking up. There was another part where a man is in an alley and a garbage bag is moving towards him and there is someone in it. It was a long time ago i dont really remember, but it was so funny.
A true classic in Japanese horror,Ju-On is a very creepy and dark ghost story. It’s about a man who goes crazy and kills his wife and son and sets their vengeful spirits to work, killing anyone who enters the house where they died.I personally love this movie if for nothig other than it’s shere creepiness,The way the mother crawls around and croaks because her throat was crushed is very well done, and all the scenes in which she “gets” people are very original and well shot. The idea that a curse can follow you anywhere is a very unsettling idea. The only rpoblem I have with this movie is the lack of closure and somewhat convaluted ending.Other than that, this movie has some of my favorite jump moments of all time[when the girl is in her room watching the news and the reporters face distorts and starts groaning, then she looks under her covers only to see the mother staring at her, then gets pulled under into...nothing.Awesome!]and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good scary ghost story…Just don’t make the mistake of watching any of the american versions of this film, they are terrible!
one of the better japaneese films out there kinda scary at times but also kinda slow.rent it.
A great example on why most Japansese Ghost stories are much better than the American ones. The atmosphere in this film is almost like a disease. You can’t shake it off just like that.
The original and the best.
I saw this in a small theater for my 21st birthday (yeah, instead of drinking I was watching a horror movie) when it had it’s limited release in the states. Me and my friends couldn’t stop cringing and grabbing onto each other. Never before has a movie made me feel so genuinely uncomfortable to be in my own skin.
Rather than relying on cheap jumps and loud music for scares, this film uses eerie sounds, disturbing imagery and a chilling atmosphere to make you pee your pants. If this movie doesn’t make you want to hide under the covers, then no movie will.
imo the best horror movie of all times.
Takashi at his finest!!!
Brilliant, scary, curious, powerfull, intense, original.
Of course some1 had to ‘RE-make’ it.
One of the best I’v seen in years.
this movie scared the hell out of me the music in this movie is one of the reasons y its so scary
amazing
This film wipes the floor with the remakes.
Much, much better than the American versions. Albeit lacking in the visual department, but makes up for it in sheer creepiness.
The trailer was better than the film itself. Still superior to the American trash version.
One of my favorite horror movies. This one is really creepy! And towards the end, this movie really creeped me out!
I was very disappointed with this one. I do think that the american remake is a better film than this one, the remake’s scarier and more exciting. In Ju-On I almost dozed off due to the confusing flicking around of different characters adn the continuous use of the little boy. The remake explained itself more as this, it left me confused and unstatisfied but the ending was creepy.
I saw the American remake first and thought it was an interesting film but then I quickly changed my mind once i saw the original. Ju-on tells the story far better than Hollywood could. Unlike the remake, this one tells the story of many short stories. Each one has a connection to the same thing; the house.
The ending is very creepy and wraps everything up neatly. I true classic!
out of all all the remakes, japanese or american, this is the one that you are gonna want to watch!!! don’t bother with any of the other ones, as they just don’t live up to the hype!!
Way better than the american remake.
There is no doubt, the Japanese know how to make good horror movies, this is very good but so is the remake.
A really scary and creepy movie. Recommended.
For a guy who hasn’t actually seen another film in the “Ju-On” curse film saga, “Ju-On: The Grudge” actually struck me as fairly impressive. It was directed by Takashi Shimizu, who remade it from a direct-to-video film titled “Ju-On: The Curse”. What I’m assuming is that this “Ju-On” is nothing more than a higher budget remake that probably didn’t need to happen , but none the less delivers the goods. I do believe that many horror fans will be pleased with how much atmosphere and imagery “Ju-On” offers up. I wouldn’t call it scary, but I would call it creepy, and that’s a pretty respectable alternative.
“Ju-On” is imaginative stuff from start to finish. It makes great use of make-up and special effects, creating imagery that is creepy enough to stick with us, or at least, most of us. The film is more of an anthology film that’s supposed to reach some awesome conclusion, although the way it all ends is somewhat unsatisfactory given the thing as whole. But even then, nothing can hurt “Ju-On”. It’s straight forward enough to be fun, atmospheric enough to be non-insulting, and entertaining enough for me to recommend.
As of now, I don’t see there being much of a point in me describing each damn anthology segment in extreme detail. They’re pretty much all the same: one person, or multiple people, go into cursed house where creepy guy murdered his poor family…and a cat, and eventually get scared to death by the curse itself. There’s an occasional twist such as: investigators go into cursed house where creepy guy murdered his poor family…and a cat, and eventually get scared to death by the curse itself, but the story isn’t what matters the most here, and luckily for us, the filmmakers make that obvious.
So, screw the story; screw the characters. They’re not exactly non-existent, but “Ju-On” doesn’t attempt to develop them, which probably would have made it a bad movie if it did. Some people just don’t know how to write good characters, and in spite of their creativity and imaginations, the people who made “Ju-On” are probably included in that vast group.
What you get is not a story, but an experience. “Ju-On” is a fun ride while it lasts. Whenever a creepy image of paranormal delight is thrown in our faces, another one is just around the bend. “Ju-On” is pretty much consistent in its creepiness, except for when the scares attempt to repeat themselves more than once. This is one of the few major flaws of the film; repetition. But…what the hell; this film is good. I liked it. I enjoyed it as much as one possibly can, and while there’s not a whole lot to say, I’d still say it’s worth the time that it requires you to invest.
For characters who are often ridiculously underwritten, the acting is still quite good for each one of them. The film is serious when it comes to being creepy, so none of the actors swim in the territories of “self-parody” or “camp”. This isn’t a very terrifying film, and it doesn’t build suspense like some cinematic classics for this genre would, but it is well-acted, well-filmed, and I was very pleased when I finished it.
I liked “Ju-On” for its images, I liked it for its atmosphere, I liked it for its direction, and I liked it for its self-aware absurdity. This film is pretty good for a night of creaky-house moments. It’s not a masterpiece, and it should never be considered a “horror classic”, but on its own right, it deserves to be praised. Some will not like it, and some will. It all depends what you bring in to it expectation-wise, because depending on how much you give a damn, you might just bring something out; something good, something great, something inspiring. I cannot imagine that “Ju-On” is a premise that will work more than, oh, I’d say about three times; and I don’t think that even these filmmakers will stop at that. But sometimes it’s enough to stop rejecting and embrace the times.
