After such a good remake for the first Ring how did it come to this? it is a horrible movie and if you loved the first one, still DONT get this one it just sucked, its good for a laugh near the end, not sure if it is supposed to be funny but i laughed, and thats about all the entertainment value you’ll get out of it.

The first The Ring is the only movie I’ve ever seen that honestly scared me. And I can say without much exaggeration that I’ve seen close to every horror movie ever made.

The Ring 2 is insanely less good (ignore the grammar) than the first one, but it nowhere near deserves the negative reviews it gets. Compared to the last movie I watched, Wrong Turn, which got all positive reviews on this site, I can’t help but think there is something wrong with people’s heads. Wrong Turn was cheese-horror with no more gore or scares than PG-13 movies like Lord of the Rings. The Ring 2 was quite scary at a few moments and very little cheese.

It has its cheesy points, but they’re not as major as people want to think. 80% of the movie is well made, and at some points better than the original. Yes, they got a sucky director when they should have stayed with Gore (I can’t spell his last name). Yes, this director has no idea how to create the suspense or atmosphere, as well as got some laughable actors. BUT the story itself is still awesome.

The bit of surrealism in the end sold me. The story is still good. It’s worth a rental, at least, if you liked the first movie. Just because it’s disappointingly worse than the original doesn’t mean it’s not better than the lame clichés that seem to be synonyms for modern horror.

“In The Ring Two, Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts, in a decent performance) and her son, Aidan (David Dorfman, much better in the first film), pack up and move to Oregon. Rachel gets a job at the local newspaper, and everything is fine and dandy. But when she learns of an apparent homicide, she immediately suspects involvement with Samara and the haunted videotape. She destroys yet another copy of the tape, but that only makes Samara angrier. Now, Rachel has to find a way to put Samara to rest once and for all, before it’s too late.

This had potential to be a solid sequel, but it isn’t. It lacks nearly everything that made the first film good, namely scares. And that’s the biggest problem. The Ring Two is just flat-out not scary. The Ring’s strong point was it’s atmosphere. Creepy, eerie, unsettling, and above all, scary. The Ring Two doesn’t have atmosphere. It doesn’t really have any sort of suspense whatsoever. It relies far too much on jolt scares. Every once in a while Samara jumps out to say boo, and that’s really all there is to the scares. An utter disappointment. In fact, attempts at scares that did not involve Samara were the ones that got laughed at, namely a scene where a herd of deer demolish Rachel’s car. The entire theater was laughing from the beginning to end of that scene.

Elizabeth Perkins and Gary Cole make appearances as a doctor and a Realtor (the latter providing brief, though appreciated comic relief), and Sissy Spacek makes a brief appearance as Samara’s birth mother. It’s sad to see such a great actress in such a limited role. Simon Baker plays a co-worker of Rachel’s. He is the largest supporting role, though we don’t learn any more about him from when we first see him to when the film is over. In all, The Ring Two has a well assembled cast that doesn’t disappoint.

The only real problem with the first film was that it left you with more questions than answers, and The Ring Two only answers a couple, creating more questions along the way. What is Samara? Why was she born the way she is? Is she a demon? What is she?! Don’t bother asking, because it’s never answered. Though you can’t help but wonder if it’s better that way. What if we found out that she’s really the devil? Would that just create more questions? It probably would. Maybe some questions are best left unanswered.

The score manages to be occasionally chilling. Plenty of violins and pianos add something to the otherwise bland environment.

If you look at it as more of a supernatural thriller than a horror film, The Ring Two is not a bad way to spend 111 minutes. It’s an interesting enough ghost story that is well acted, well directed (though I expected better from the director of the original Ringu), and has a good score. Despite it’s numerous flaws, it manages to be OK, which is better than nothing. But the lack of sheer horror and uneasiness takes away a lot from the experience. The Ring Two is definitely a disappointment…” –Sean (MiPueblo), imdb.com

This movie was doomed from the start. The first one set the bar so high that there was no way this one could be successfull. I LOVED the first one.

Why all the hate? I actually thought The ring two was better than the first one. It was scarier and the acting was much better. The pace moved quicker and we got to know more about the ring. This is one of the rare sequels that actually turn out to be a good follow up to the original. Is the ring two a great film? No. But it isn’t terrible either. I actually liked it a lot. Overall I thought The ring two was really good and much better than the original.

I thought this was actually ok. The acting in this film is good, and David Dorfman gives another great performance, even if his character can be alittle annoying. Naomi Watts is a reasonable actress, but her character in this movie is extremely frustrating. She is slow to react to danger, and seems to be very slow on the uptake when creepy things start happening to her son. It all seems very unconvincing.
HOWEVER. There are some good chills to be had here, and a few jumpy moments. You’ll probably enjoy this film more if you treat it as a supernatural thriller (like The Others) rather than an out-and-out horror movie.
All in all this movie manages to pull a suitable atmsphere of tension, and the ring girl is creepy as ever. The acting is good, but the characters are frustrating and unlikable. Nowhere near as good as the first film, but certainly not as bad as I feared it would be.

Try to make sense of this movie, I dare you.

Plays out more like the slime trial of a confused slug than anything else. Yeah, pretty sure the director had totally lost it by this point, or just did the best he could with the shitty story. What in the hell is happening and why? Why abandon the original story? Why have Samara try to come back through Naomi Watts’s son? Why not remake the Japanese sequel instead of coming up with something so asininely different?

Just an utterly retarded piece of garbage. If this movie scares you than so does Thomas the tank engine.

All in all, it’s a decent film. However, it’s a real shame the ticking time bomb of the cursed tape is gone after the opening sequence.

This was not a good movie at all. the first movie was good, but they did not need to make a sequel!

This was a big dissapointment compared to the rather good first Ring. This is a similar plot, but there isn’t enough here to class it as a good horror, thriller. This movie is confusing, but does have a sense of true horror at the same time. Yet, I belive it isn’t as scary as the first, because the idea’s here are not fresh, and are recycled from the first. Again, Naomi Watts gives off a powerful performance, but not enough.

Overall, a dissapointing sequel to a great movie.

    5/10

I hated it back then when it came out, and it’s still as horrible as I remembered it to be.
This sequel is so incredibly horrible, it makes you wonder what they put in Hideo Nakata’s drink – I mean, how could the man who is responsible for the awesome original, shoot something so incredibly lame and boring as this lousy piece of crap.

Apart from an ok opening, nothing, absolutely nothing in here is scary or thrilling or enjoyable or anything. Just lots of dreadfully tedious and/or completely unimpressing/forgettable scenes.
The plot is stupid, the CGI effects look cheap, most of the dialogue is dumb, Naomi Watts acts like she doesn’t know what she’s doing here, the camera work is rather weak and the score is dull and repetitive.

An insult to everything Ringu/Ring-related, a horrible movie.

I seriously think people need to re-watch this movie a few times and then come back with a better review than “it sucked” or “horrible remake”.

This movie isn’t just about straight-up horror or scares, you have to actually make your brain work to understand it. Much of the film is rooted in symbology; the burning tree, the deer, and even water itself are used as powerful symbols throughout the film. Many of the symbols return from the first film and for those who have seen the previous film, you will recognize and pinpoint their importance to the story of the second film.

The character of Samara is also explored more in this film, as we learn more about her origins aside from her adoptive ones. We see that her mother actually tried to kill her via drowning, and that she only cried around water. Her water manipulation comes from the fact that she was drowned and feared water, now using it as a weapon in death to scare others. I loved seeing how Samara latched herself onto Rachel’s son, then possessing him, which acted as a brilliant callback to the original sequel to Ringu, wherein the little boy gets possessed by Sadako.

There were many scenes that made me jump, one of which was the deer scene. I thought it was very effective and acted as a reference to the horse suicide scene of the first film, in which Samara caused her adoptive parent’s horses to drown. She seems to have a similar insanity causing ability with other animals now too. Though the deer could have been textured better, I admit I probably won’t look at Bambi the same way ever again.

Another chilling scene was the climax where Samara was climbing up the well after Rachel. The way she climbed up the well, in a fractured and clearly inhuman manner made it all the more chilling. What acted as the icing on the cake was how Rachel finally sealed Samara for good. As Samara is about to climb out of the well crying out “Mommy!” in a distorted voice, Rachel replies “I’m not your fucking Mommy!”. That line would later be used in the film Orphan.

I may be one of the few who really enjoyed this movie, but I enjoyed it immensely and cannot wait for the third film in the franchise which seems to be a 3D incarnation of Samara.

I found this move just as good as the first one; it had a good storyline, good acting, and some scary scenes.

Official Score: 2 / 5
