I just finished watching this not too long ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was not what I was expecting at all. I was expecting a slaughter-fest film, but instead there was focus on the story, which surprised me. This film also has one of the most epic kills I’ve ever seen in a movie. I will be watching this again.

I have never seen the original, but I thought this was pretty good. It had some decent scares. If you like those “biological disease outbreak” movies, you should certainly like this one. It was actually a lot better than I expected.

A simple, yet effective film! Enjoyed it from start to finish. Had lower expectations going into it but at the end I was truly satisfied.

This is one solid, action laced, intense, entertaining thrill ride of a remake done right for once! Everything about this is great from the acting, filming, shocks, mystery, gore, pace and story that I didn’t want it to end, a sign of a terrific thriller in my books. There were a few solid jump scares here and there but this is more of an apocalyptic/thriller than a full out horror movie to me but the gripping action and the gnarly situation make up for that because to me these type of virus, apocalypse films are more terrifying than some guy in a mask chasing bimbos around. This was like a mixture of Carriers, 28 Weeks Later, Resident Evil, Phantoms ect. so if you like any of those films you’ll love this wild and crazy ride. I can’t find any flaws about this movie other than the fact that it’s not the most original movie around but it’s a remake so who care because I’d take a good remake any day than some watered down crap! Overall I loved it and didn’t want it to end and would mind a sequel and this might even be the best thriller or horror movie I guess we’ll see this year but hopefully not. Highly recommended but then again I have a soft spot for these type of movies. More of a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Am I the only one who thinks this movie was fuckin’ terrible? In a way its a severely watered down version of 28 Days Later. The filmmakers like always try to create scares out of nothing use jump scares and loud noises. Their is nothing original or new about anything. The characters where bland and unispired just like the paper thin plot. I thought I went to see the “Crazies” and I got the “Blandies”

I’ve always viewed George A. Romero’s The Crazies as a great failure: The bad acting, scoring, and threadbare production all worked to subvert a plausibly horrible story. Over the years I’ve watched it again and again, wondering “What if?”

The new The Crazies from director Breck Eisner updates and takes a few liberties with the source material, but the “What if?” remains.

Like Romero’s film before it, this Crazies could’ve been better. While I enjoyed it, I couldm’t help but feel the sense of deja vu because of 28 Days/ Weeks, I Am Legend,Warning Sign and so many other movies which had already borrowed from, you guessed it, The Crazies.

Hopefully nobody is developing a remake of Martin…

I thought this film was ok at best. I was surprised by the decent enough acting, and I liked the spin that our government was responsible. Throughout the film though, i just couldn’t help but feel we have been there done that! It wasn’t horrible but wasn’t great either.

I wanted this to be a huge epic staple in Paranoia horror.Instead it was O.k.It had great humor,Cool beginning,Then it lagged and fizzled out into a easy predictable but not terrible ending. It had some intensity but as the movie progressed I notice the audience becoming more like the Muppet hecklers from the balcony on the Muppet Show. How many of you in a apocalyptic situation would you do the cliche of you stay here I”m going go check the abandoned building out.The acting was very good but the writing wasn’t.Not a bad movie but it’s not a classic or a tribute to a classic.See it for yourself and see if YOU see something new cause I didn’t.Still better than Twilight.

i really enjoyed the movie. it was a zombie outbreak movie without the zombies. your typical zombie scenarios play out similar but kindof different when you replace the zombie with a “crazy”, so it was interesting seeing the twists on familiar situations. i found it very suspenseful, tho i feel like the ads gave too much away, or maybe it was just that i saw it on tv and the net so goddamn often. i liked the government participation, that was a cool new perspective. but what was with the military dude they unmask and suddenly they know the guy or something? was that character established somewhere previously and i just spaced? or was that weird to anyone else either? aside from that, i thought it was pretty sweet. LOOOVE olyphant, and the chick from surrogates was sweet too.

After reading Mr. Disgusting’s review I gotta ask, did we watch the same movie? I don’t understand how this was even a horror movie, after the first ten minutes it became a complete let down, little to no gore, boring story, forgettable cast. The original as with most remakes was the better film. There was far less heart in this film. SPOILER ALERT: Was anyone else extremely disappointed when the mom in the farm house didn’t get ran over with the combine? instead he burns the house down? bullshit I say, that could of been gore-tastic! All together though this film wasn’t Crazy enough.

All the guy below me cares about is gore? There are tons of those websites online, for free, just go there; becuase normal people go to films to be entertained.

Anyway about the film…there was little to no gore really, it was a bit more realistic, but im glad the infected werent zombies, rather a watered down version of the rage monsters from 28 days later. Some parts were predictable, others were slightly unexpected. The story as predictable, but honestly, the only other way to stop that predictability would be to kill off main characters or something; which aint happenin!

I liked it, didnt love it, i say watch it; its got certain parts where it’s enjoyable. These types are films are always about innovation, and there are a few random sparks of it here, but a lot of the time “The Crazies” will leave you think, hmph…its been done before. It’s an ok film to kill a few hours on a saturday. 6/10

Personally I loved. I thought it was really well done. It had intense action scenes, lot’s of explosions and it did have some jump scares in there. The movie started with a bang and it ended with a bang. But there was one thing that bugged me, I remember about every part of a trailer that I see so I knew what was coming through mostly the whole movie but it was a really kickass movie. It was well worth the wait.

this movie sucked. it was very predictable and there were way too many farfetched just in nick of time saved your life scenes. a horror movie is not good when the characters seem to have a horseshoe in their ass! i havent seen the original, but i hope it is a lot better than this because romero hasnt let me down yet.

it was very good and suspensful! i liked it a lot. i had never seen the original, it looked dumb, and i really didn’t think this was gonna be good, but the action starts right away literally and never lets up. it was surprisingly a lot more bloody than i thought it was gonna be too which was nice. one thing i agree on the review with was that there were way too many jump scares and zingers, sometimes too many in a row in fact. it got a little tedious, but otherwise great movie.

I liked it, but it wasn’t particularly thrilling. I think had the first twenty minutes been devoted to character development, I would’ve liked it more. As it is, the characters spent too much time ‘on the run,’ without the audience knowing much about them at all. Great gore effects and some good camera work save it from being strictly average, but I was expecting more.

This movie was very well done. It hads every aspect of a horror/suspense film in it. It has been about 2 months since a horror movie came to theatres and I am VERY glad it was this one. The past few months have just been O.K. movies and when I think about them I say…..ehhhhh. But this one was different. Lots of jump scenes and a great plot. The actors are amazing, especially Tim Olyphant as the chief. He kept this movie good. I highly reccommend people seeing this movie…unless you are scared easily :) !

Having never seen the original I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Crazies remake, but as the credits rolled I found myself filled with a sense of dread and quite a bit of satisfaction. This movie has everything I look for in a great zombie film: action, gore, suspense, real scares, and even a bit of humor and government conspiracy thrown in for good measure.

They found a great cast too. I’m a big fan of Timothy Olyphant who plays the small town sheriff who gets more than he can handle. Radha Mitchell proved her horror chops to me in Silent Hill and managed to be one of the few great things about that film. The supporting cast is strong too, my personal favorite being the deputy who also doubles as the source for a lot of the humor.

An annoying trend in film trailers right now is showing off part of the ending, or in Quarantine’s case the entire ending. I figured they were going to do what they did to contain the infection but the trailer took away all doubts.

Where this movie shines are in the tension it builds up as the story progresses. In the beginning we only know that something is wrong, than we know what that something is so the film turns into a terrifying zombie flick. When it begins transitioning (sometimes awkwardly) between government conspiracy and zombie apocalypse things get a little too broken up. The Crazies works as a suspense movie but when it tries to be more than that it didn’t work.

If you’re looking for a truly scary non-zombie flick light on the apocalypse and conspiracy themes and heavy on the action and suspense, you can’t go wrong with this movie. You will leave the movie satisfied and the best part about it, at least in my case, is that a year from now after a handful of other zombie films have dulled The Crazies to a faded memory, I will still remember a handful of scenes, particularly those of the pitchfork and morgue variety.

The Crazies was actually a good remake. Remakes in the hands of good directors turn out to be really good sometimes. The kills were stylish and the gore was just right. This is actually a remake that was better than the original. The original was terrible. They showed scenes where people were going crazy and then other scenes where they showed the military taking action whereas in the original all they showed throughout the whole movie was mainly the military and not alot of crazy people which made it incredibly boring. All in All, The Crazies was a great remake that was scary, bloody, and crazy. I recommend it.

So the film was definitely entertaining, but I had a few problems with it. First off, typical horror film, they had to use those fake scares that really annoy me. They don’t make me jump, they make me yawn. I hate them and for me, they take away from the film. By fake scare, I mean when they use those noises and music to build the tension and then it turns out not to be really anything or it is someone who is not a threat at all.
    –SPOILER–
The other big problem I had with the film is that there was no pattern with the infected. Some of the infected were focused on killing while others were focused on riding their bicycle by the sheriff without a care in the world. Some of the infected were continuing their “work,” and the three hunters even seemed to be able to communicate with each other, which goes against every other infected in the film.

There were other problems with the film, like why it took so long for the government to react to a crashed plane. If this was such a highly classified bio-weapon, then there probably would have been other military aircraft going along with the plane carrying the virus. Had the plane crashed in real life, there would probably be immediate action to the crash and to containing the virus. I also would hope that the government would have created an antidote alongside any bio-weapon they create.
    –END SPOILER–

Posted By missb on March 1, 2010 @ 3:52 am

It started off a bit slow and a bit like any other zombie or deadly virus film and used a few cheap scares (for instance, things that jump out just to make you jump.) But after you get past that, I think it is a pretty good watch. I like that there was more realism to this than most zombie films. You can’t win, you can’t fight this stuff off, it happens and that’s the end. As well, I also like that sometimes you have to judge for yourself as to if a person is infected or not, perhaps it is just their personality. Are the hunters really sick? Or are they already insane, but not by that virus?

    —-SPOILER—-
The end scene when they drop the bomb and blow up the power plant is beautiful. Dave and Judy stand on the road to know where and look back at their town as it’s burning. This scene is one you HAVE to see on a big screen. I thought it was a great scene. As well, I loved the ending. I thought that showing that now they have to move on and contain Cedar Rapids as it’s infected as well, was great. It shows how the virus spreads exponentially, cannot be contained, and it will continue to grow until the whole world is infected and destroyed.
    —–END SPOILER—–

There are some scenes that you must see on the big screen. I suggest going to see it. Go ahead, I’ll wait here.

Also, if you know there is an infection and it is spreading possibly through the water and maybe through the air as well, are you going to risk getting infected blood an an open wound? I sure as hell wouldnt, but the mai ncharacter doesnt seem to mind.

Finally got to see this the other day, and though I jumped at a couple of moments in the film, it wasn’t all that scary of a film. Perhaps I have seen too many films of this kind, it was indeed well done. I feel for Timothy Olyphant’s sheriff character and have always enjoyed Radha Mitchell in just about everything. It is a believable story with some specifics-like why did the pilot crash the plane? But all of this is way too overdone by way too many movies to count and if you like these kind of movies then you’ll definitely love this one. I saw the movie as crazy and yet I left unaffected by it. It’s just not one that sticks out but I appreciate the effort that went into it as they tried to scare the money out of me.

Pretty bad ass remake of the semi classic film 1973 Romero flick of the same name. I never really liked the original. I liked the story just not the production. This update was really good!! The seriousness of the story was not changed and yet seemed like “this could really happen”. Radha Mitchell finally seems like just maybe she has learned something or two about acting! The rest of the cast is wonderful. I must have jumped 5-6 times! I got the feeling that The Crazies felt somewhat like 300 Days of Night but maybe its the other way around since Romero did this first!

The Crazies is the rare, rare remake that surpasses its predecessor. It’s an absolute blast. It does have its share of “jump” scares, which I usually dislike (because its such a cheap tactic) but it also provides an atmosphere of dread that is impressive. Alright so I saw this today and I have to say I am extremely disappointed. Not enough action and too thin of a plot for massive gaps between the carnage(or lack of carnage). Olyphant was fine but he keeps picking shit movies. Perfect Getaway and now this? Someone needs a new agent. Anyway Romero purists will find this to be a sorry attempt to recreate the good old days and unless it is from the 28 Days/Weeks franchise I think we should give this a rest. Or at least not give Overture any more cracks at it.

Not a bad film but really one that offers nothing new. There were a few tension-filled scenes but a lot of “cheap” scares. (I’m getting real tired of films where the heroine is grabbed from behind only to find out its really just the other good guy trying to get her attention. Who does that really???)

I thought this movie was just ok. Nothing new, nothing inspired. I grew extremely tired of the jump scares, though none of them made me jump because the music cued you into what was going to happen every time. I thought the main lady overacted on numerous occasions, and was just generally annoying. I also thought the pacing was incredibly slow. When there was action, though, it was extremely well done. The ending annoyed me to no end, however, considering how incredibly unrealistic it was. If you want an extremely slow-burn “horror” film that relies on jump scares and overused cliches to move the story along, this is your movie. If you want action, see some of Romero’s other movies.

A few tired horror cliches though (someone being saved at the last moment…things jumping at you when the “coast was clear” just before etc.), but it was still an entertaining horror film. And there aren’t many moments in the movie where you are angry at the stupidity of the characters, which is fairly common in most horror movies. Definitely worth a watch.

Fantastic. Best horror movie I’ve seen so far this year. I’m not sure how anyone could think this movie was slow or gore-deficient. I’m a bit old school in my thinking I guess. The amount of gore in a movie is not the make or break aspect many people on this forum seem to ascribe to a success or failure. I think suspense, intensity and atmosphere are what drive a good horror movie and this film’s got those in spades.

At first glance, Breck Eisner’s remake of the 1973 George A. Romero classic The Crazies would seem not so much like a bad idea, but not necessarily like a good one either. Whilst the trailer presented it as one of the better looking reimaginings of our time, I just couldn’t shake off that ugly sensation at the pit of my stomach that I like to call `The Hills Have Eyes Fever’. I was scared even from the opening scenes of The Crazies, not because of its frightfully un-commercial name or on-screen scares, but because I really didn’t want this film to become another bog-standard remake that I wish had never happened, kind of like an illegitimate child. Thankfully, The Crazies isn’t illegitimate, nor is it bog-standard. It’s actually, and I say this in a hushed tone… it’s actually pretty good.

The film follows a small group of people from a rural town in Iowa as they fight for their freedom after fellow residents and friends turn nasty, and the military get involved. The overview in itself doesn’t sound like anything particularly special, but The Crazies is a rare film where the sum of its parts are worth more than the whole. The attention lies not on the bigger picture, in the fate of the town and its people; but more on the fate of the aforementioned small group, and the horrific situations they find themselves in. If the scriptwriters had chosen to approach it in a more holistic fashion, then chances are The Crazies would probably have slumped, much like The Hills Have Eyes did. The isolated story-telling thrusts audiences into the same position as the characters on the screen – everyone is asking the same questions, and no one knows what’s going on.

From start to finish, it is ripe with intrigue and tension stemming mostly from a plot played very close to the chest until the very last couple of minutes. Whilst the gore and shock value don’t exactly run parallel with that of a Saw film, it still manages to take all the genre conventions of a horror movie and make them more exciting, consistently avoiding reverting to copious amounts of blood to scare the viewers. A few standout scenes include a crazy citizen ominously dragging a pitchfork through a ward (I can’t really say what it is exactly, without risking giving away the game a bit) whilst his potential victims are strapped immobilized to their beds; and quite a unique scene in a carwash. These two scenes alone prove that The Crazies isn’t just trying to remake its predecessor, it’s actually trying to better it – and it’s done a damn good job.

The cast play solid roles for the most part, with Timothy Olyphant’s Sherriff and Joe Anderson’s Deputy being the star picks, however Radha Mitchell’s Judy Dutton and Danielle Panabaker’s Becca Darling are inconsistent at some points. Having said that, Mitchell must be commended for a fantastic performance in the pitchfork scene, as even without movement or words she still manages to convey sheer terror with facial expressions that completely ferment the tense atmosphere.
As for the ending, it’s disappointingly predictable, although this doesn’t detract totally from the entertainment value when it happens. It will raise a lot of questions, a lot of which will not and never will be answered, but you wont be walking out of the cinema feeling betrayed by a poor finish to an otherwise impressive film.

Ultimately, The Crazies brings nothing drastically new to the table, but what it does offer is solid and gripping suspense, a watertight script, a good cast and overall a satisfying film. You probably wont be fussed about seeing in a second time, but rest assured it will provide thrills and chills that you don’t want to miss.

    7/10

Being that I haven’t seen the original yet, I went into this film with absolutely no expectations, I was just happy about the fact that it was an R rated horror flick, and for a gore hound like me thats half the battle.lol But I was really happy when the end credits rolled, It seemed like something like that could really happen in a little town like that. Great gore, not bad acting, and if you haven’t seen it, see it. Highly recommended

I haven’t seen the original so I didn’t know what to expect, but I thought this movie was excellent. It jumps straight into the action and never lets up. We have seen this type of zombie/infected story before but it doesn’t matter as it does have it’s own twist on what an infected person is. They don’t eat people here but, well, turn crazy and just want to kill you. It’s fast paced, relentless, has quite a few well executed set pieces and the acting is more than decent. There could have been more character development and the script could have been more polished in places but these flaws can be overlooked because this is one damn entertaining horror movie. The gore is just right and I was surprised by the tension and emotional clout in some scenes. Definitely not for people who believe in Government conspiracies as what goes down here, to a degree, could happen in real life, what with Governments going to extreme lengths to cover up their dirty secrets.
This movie does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Entertain. Highly recommended.

I will give the newer Crazies version a lot of credit for great acting, and scary moments ( like the tractor in the barn), but toward the end it kinda collapsed. It got repetitive at the ending. There was no “wow”! But then again maybe they are setting it up for the next one. A lot of loose ends happened. Why couldn’t they try to find help to save the deputy? What about the unborn baby? Guess I’m not the greatest fan of action-horror ( although loved Dawn of the Dead remake)Other than that it was okay.

I was expecting more from this, there are some excellent moments, as the scene in the carwash, beautiful photography at the beginning of the movie, a great combination with “We’ll meet again” by Johnny Cash, f****** brilliant! To watch on a rainy day if you have nothing else to do :)

Another remake. Take that comment as you wish now for the actual film.
The crazies relies on atmosphere the same way a fish relies on water, this is not entirely a bad thing as the film itself does keep the atmosphere in steady supply so one is not left wanting at any huge moments, however its reliance on only one article leaves the others floating violently in the breeze.
Acting is alright given the casts range in their previous works, not much really needs to be said in that department.
The film is hindered by its want. What does it want, it wants to be a remake it does not try to update itself like Dawn of the Dead did. It is quite happy saying hey this is a remake so if you loved the original please love this one, which frankly is an audience no one who ever makes a remake should go for. (Look at the psycho remake almost identical to the original yet was so poorly received that everyone basically ended up losing a little respect for the film they originally loved.) A remake should bare its own teeth and I never really felt like this was coming out of the gate with anything fresh.
The story starts well but falters quite quickly by never sticking to any substantial rules in regards to the crazies. Some of the norms are educated but become complete idiots upon becoming crazies, while lesser norms somehow are able to keep enough of there intellect to do other things. Plot holes are abundant in this work where the viewer is meant to take them as is. (and no matter what Kevin Smith says everything is for critics and I do not mean the ones who get paid a hundred grand a year to say this or that. I mean the fans as it is their money that inevitably pays for these features as sure as there will be another remake announced this year no one would back any of these projects if the creators said we are not going to show it to anyone we just want to make it.)
Lastly character development I know it is a pain to write, because you either end up writing too much or not enough and fans end up displeased, but in this situation it must have been quite obvious that it was a little short.
In the end the film ultimately falls into the zombie subgenre (Yes, I know they are not zombies, thus the term genre). Most people will enjoy this film it is quite easy to fall into its weird embrace.
I personally hated it (see profile for better explanation) and would not recommend it to others.
So from my opinion I would give the film one skull, from an unbiased standpoint I believe it deserves three skulls.

Extremely suspenseful and tense, brilliantly scripted and perfectly paced, uncompromisingyl brutal and wonderfully atmospheric, with fantastic settings, a great soundtrack, an ace cast, some fantastic gore-scenes and a stunning ending.

Not bad. But defenitely not good. Just a very mediocre horror movie that really doesn’t need to be made now that we have 28 Days/Weeks Later, Night of the Living Dead, Carriers, etc…

Very predictable, with a couple standout scenes. The actor who played the Deputy (he was in The Ruins and Across the Universe) was the standout, while everyone else was just the bland, typical hero type… Worth a rental. Maybe a purchase in Blockbuster’s 3/20 rack.

An adequate, paint-by-numbers horror flick. Some people dislike horror movies that take too long to get rolling. The Crazies does the opposite — it gets started with the chaos and violence almost right away and rarely lets up. That can be a good thing, but it undermines the things in the story that should create the horror:

    A. The terror of watching someone you know transform into an insane homicidal maniac. Since we barely get to know any of the townsfolk before they virus makes them go nutso, it doesn’t really have that much impact when they do. The few times they do let us get to know a character, it works. But mostly it’s just”random person goes psycho.”

    B. The military response to the outbreak. We’ve seen this stuff in dozens of movies now, so if you want it to generate some real dread, you’re going to have to up the ante, and Eisner doesn’t. From this angle, it just feels like a bloodier version of Outbreak.

Still, it’s not a badly made film, and it’ll be better than a lot of the crap horror movies on the shelf at the video store. Just don’t go expecting too much. Worth a rental, not a purchase.

It somehow took him like 5 mins to get from the truck stop back to his wife, but then took them the ENTIRE rest of the movie to get back to the truck stop…ermm yeah that makes total sense. And this whole “oooo the government are the real bad guys” has been done so many times, I’m totally sick of it. ANOTHER DECENT MOVIE WITH JUST AN AVERAGE ENDING. I must give props to Timothy Olyphant, because he always seems to be a likable average-Joe who can still capture your attention during every second he’s on screen. The story itself is pretty decent: people just going crazy for no reason (therefore, of course, causing speculation against the government). However, I think a few more killings by these “crazies” would have made the movie worthwhile. And the ending…well, I congratulate them in creating an ending perfect for a sequel, but it was still pretty soft.
In all, I would recommend watching this, even though it’s nothing new or groundbreaking. Just another decent movie.

thought this movie was a lot better than the 1973 original. I don’t hate the original, but I found it really boring. This movie was more suspenseful and creepy. A toxin by the name of Trixie contaminates the water of Ogden Marsh, a small farming town in Iowa. Soon, everybody starts becoming crazy and killing each other. Some are not infected, such as David and Judy Dutton. The Government comes and quarantines almost everybody to stop the disease from spreading. Throughout the film, David and Judy try to avoid the Government and kill any crazy people that get in their way. If you wanna get down with the sickness, you may enjoy THE CRAZIES!!!

This rendition of The Crazies is almost nothing like the original George Romero film. The original film was loaded not just with gore and creepiness, but also a building sense of tension and suspense throughout its entirety that really kept you engaged with the film through its use of documentary-style filming and editing. This one lacks any such substance and relies on pure shock tactics.

What you get with this Crazies is a pale imitation of an already over-the-top film that kicks it up into outrageous nonsense. A boring, dull sheriff and his highly pregnant wife gruelingly survive an outbreak of T.R.I.X.I.E (that’s one more than D.I.X.I.E) in what amounts to basically the Die Hard of zombie movies. Of course, in The Crazies they aren’t technically zombies, just homicidal maniacs infected with an incurable infectious disease that causes permanent insanity and brain damage.

The amount of paranoia induced by Romero’s original mind-fuck masterpiece is something I doubted this remake would be able to match, but it disappointed even my very low standards. Standard boilerplate horror turn-arounds and misdirections are the stock and trade of the “suspense” of this film which is regularly ruined by ridiculous things happening to and being done by our protagonists.

Everything in this film is cartoonish — the bungling government is amped up into fascist stormtroopers who indiscriminately kill any and all civilians. In the original there are plenty of sane people being shot, but it is through confusion and the disintegration of support and communication lines. In this one, the military is just a bunch of coldblooded bastards committing wholesale slaughter starting Day 1 of the outbreak.

The idea of exploring the whole “how you know what sanity is, can you know that you are sane?” angle seemed to have been lost on the writers here, there are certainly no cerebral or philosophical themes present in this film; everything is played completely straight with seemingly no irony, subtlety or subtext.

In short: This is a pathetic failure. What’s more unfortunate, is that this is probably the strongest effort the people involved in the making of this film are able to make — this trashy pablum is the pinnacle of Breck Eisner’s career, and I’ll bet good money that the fact this film is even watchable is in spite of him and probably due to conscious efforts to block his shitty ideas.
