I’ve always been one for old-school, gory, horror flicks, and this is clearly one of them. The whole movie is similar to Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, which is awesome in itself, and it is represented nicely.
The plot is about the small Alaskan town of Barrow, in which the sun is blotted out during December, or “30 days of night”. During that time, many go on vacation. Thanks to the preparation of a stranger, such as destroying cell phones, the town is open to attack by vampires. Basically, they just ransack the town 24/7, killing everyone. It is all up to a final stand by a group of survivors with a week left until the sun returns.
This movie is a total throwback to the olden days when things were as simple as killing, blood, and gore. In a way, this movie is a lot like Hatchet because of this. I also love the way that you really get connected to the antagonists, which would be the huge, terrifying head vampire and his crew of recently recruited undead.
Speaking of which, the designs for the vampires are very well made. They really look like undead demons from hell and not just stoned people with blood at their lips.
Overall, anyone who enjoys vampires, Salem’s Lot or really any horror movie should owe it to themselves to watch this one.

Wonderfully gory, well acted Vampire flick that adds a new twist on the genre. First off David Slade can really make a strong movie, the direction is top notch. Everything about this movie was fairly enjoyable the only gripe that I had personally was the tension. Or lack there of, there was little to know attempt at scaring you. It was pretty much straight forward violence and gore. Nothing wrong with that. I liked how the vampires were more like monsters than the romanticized version of what they commonly are. Also this didn’t follow the comic really closely; but if you read the comic and see this I don’t think that you will be disappointed. I strongly recommend this.

good vampire film, but it had a few problems. i think josh hartnett could have done a better job. the gore was pretty good. i liked some of the vampire’s strategies. good is my final word.

Andrew Kasch from Dreadcentral.com says “The most terrifying vampire movie ever made”. Well, I guess if the makers are trying to promote their work, they need SOMEONE’S opinion. Frankly, I find comments like these to a) question the credibility of the reviewer and b) do nothing for the state of horror. 30 Days of Nights is nothing more than a mediocre tale riddled with bad acting and dialogue to boot.(note to self, stay away from Josh Hartnett–has this guy been in a decent movie yet? Pearl Harbor and Black Dahlia listed as his credits on the sleeve aren’t exactly anything to rave about). Sure, there’s a promising set up here, but too many throw-away lines in place of character development (just what in the hell was Hartnett’s and George’s beef, anyways?), and don’t forget the best axing to the head on celluloid–but overall, this seems aimed at those with attention deficit disorder.

This movie was an insult to my intelligence.I’ve been looking through the ratings and maybe people don’t like plot structure in their movies. I do like violence but not when the whole movie is just violence and occasional clips of Josh Hartnett pondering about what to do. This was one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen. If you enjoy plot structure do not see this film.

I got this movie 2day and watched iot as soon asi brought it. The movie was good and, violent and, had good acting. the only thing I didn;t like about the nmovie was that it was longer than it needed to be. some horror movies such as house of wax and, the hills have eyes were this lon but they had more caring and story elements with it. this movie didn’t have a good story with it. just vampires attacking for no reason.

this movie isn’t worth the 19.99 i payed for but maybe worth the 5.75 admission ticket at my movie theatre.

Small town in Alaska gets overrun by undead Microsoft executives. Fucking terrible movie. Great story, great graphic novel, terrible movie. Josh Hartnett belongs in acting jail, as does that big-gummed actress who plays his ex-girlfriend. A few nifty gore sequences, but then squashed by unintentional comedy and ridiculous plot holes. Do yourself a favor and go pick up GOOD vampire flicks like ‘The Lost Boys’, ‘Near Dark’ and ‘Fright Night’. If you enjoyed this film, you might be in danger of being a complete dumbass.

Great idea, great comic book (oh sorry I mean graphic novel)but a so-so movie. I was surprised the film makers made subtle changes to the original story and I think it hurt the film. These were a different type of vampire more nasty looking than ussual so why did I feel bored by them? I was expecting more from this film. I guess my rating would be different if I had no expectations going in.

The most badass vampire movie I have ever seen. I loved almost everything about this movie. I just didnt like some of the acting. The vampires were kick ass and creepy as hell. Their faces kinda reminded me of sharks in a feeding frenzy, which was a cool touch. The movie was awesome and that one scene were the guy gets his head chopped off at the end….wow..great effects. One of the coolest death scenes ive seen in a movie.

When I first saw it, I really hated it. And still part of me hates it. I was never a fan of vampire movies; mainly because they’re so . . . cheesy. I thought Stephen King’s modern-vampire book `Salem’s Lot was decent, but I have never seen a vampire movie that didn’t bore me. And I can’t say 30 Days of Night changed that, either.

    The good:
    - Quite bloody, compared to modern movies.
    - Camerawork was brilliant.
    - The premise was brilliant.
    - The ending was neat.

    The bad:
    - The vampires were as cheesy as humanly possible.
    - I was so bored I almost left the theater.
    - They couldn’t resist using the insanely cliché possessed-little-girl scene.
    - The cut-off scenes (and there were quite a few) dumbed it down.

Overall: I guess I’m just glad someone made an atmospheric, bloody movie with somewhat of a punk spin to it.

This is a really well made movie but its missing an element. I know good acting! Seriously this movie is the coolest but the acting sucks horribly. It seemed like Josh Harnett wanted nothing to do with this film but did it for a paycheck.

Just dull watching him, but the film, its pretty good.

For a vampire movie, i thought that this was very well done and i didnt mind it. i thought that there could have been more blood.
the beginning was slow and kind of dragged on though. and i thought the vampires were a little lame. but it is better than most vampire films.
wish i was more scary though!

This movie was pretty good. The vampires for me were more like creatures not the classic suave and sexy vampire. That was a turn off for me. Other than that the story was excellent. The choices that are made are really great. The idea of alaska is awesome. I really had never given the idea any thought but was impressed that someone out there had really thought about it.

30 Days of Night was shameful. There were a few moments where it had potential- such as where the vampires attacked the SUV or were inside the house attacking the family, the camera work and editing was very Danny Boyle-esque which I loved. But really, the movie was lost in an awful plot and even worse dialogue and acting. From the second it started, the lines were so cheesy and the acting was atrocious. The best part of the movie was when one of the ushers in the theatre fell walking up the stairs.
Overall- a lot of potential, most of which was squandered

WOW !! Finally, Ghost House Pictures (with the backing of Sony’s Columbia Pictures) delivers a great R-rated horror movie with 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (which also happens to be a great adaption of Steve Niles graphic novel) ….. if you’re a fan of the original graphic novels then you will enjoy this film (compared to all the other failed attempts at bringing comic books to the screen) ….. if you’re not a fan – watched the film – but didn’t understand it ? (come on, go read the graphic novels eeediot) ….. I don’t know whether or not there should be a prequel vs. a sequel (there’s a lot which hasn’t been explored about our Alaska bound Nosferatus)!

Hello there, just wanted to drop a line about this insane little flick after I revisited it for the first time last night since the day it was released. Perhaps it was the fact that my girl and I had just watched the “Shutter” remake previous to viewing this, but it just struck me as amazing. I really enjoyed it the first time I viewed it, as well. Though for some reason, this time around, I just thought it was excellent. I would have given this movie 10/10 for their creative depiction of vampires alone, but there was one line in this brilliant film that lowered it two stars for me. The little vamp girl, in the store slowly turns around after apparently eating all of this man’s stomach. Now, not only would I assume a little girl like that would be full after that sort of indulgence, but she just says the most ridiculous and cliche shit I’ve heard in awhile and it just totally took me out of the realism that was so well conveyed and consistently distributed until then. Those whom have seen it know what I’m refering to. I do really appreciate how they took care of her though. Other than that it was A grade, awesome baby! Yeah baby little vampire babies!

I really enjoy this movie. Watched it for the second time tonite. I like the flow of the movie, the gore is good, and the vampires are rather cool looking. Josh Hartnett does and excellent job, and Melissa George did an alright job as well. The head vampire was a pretty fun time. The female vamp aggravates me a bit(she gots more gums than wrigley). I like Ben Foster, he was creepy in this film, but I feel he did not get enough screen time. I would’ve given his character a larger role, due mainly in part to how great of an actor he is. Another thing I would change about the film is the damn screeching. The vamp language is pretty cool, but only the head vamp can speak it? The others just screech like the put their hand on the stove. Woulndt mind seeing a sequel to this film, but I dont think that will happpen. Anyways, I enjoyed this film, and if you are on the fence on wether to watch it or not, hope off and take a seat on the watch it side.

I rate this a 7.85 out of 10, but I will round up and score it an eight.

“30 Days of Night is set in the (very) small town of Barrow in Alaska which has the distinction of being the northern most town in the U.S., it is isolated in 80 miles of road-less wilderness which is cut off & plunged into total darkness all day every winter for thirty days straight. During this time the population of Barrow drops from 563 to 152 as most of the townspeople head to somewhere more hospitable for the winter, the few that do stay this particular winter are in for a rough time as a group of blood drinking Vampire like creatures descend on the town in order to kill everyone & drink their blood. A small group of assorted survivors lead by Sheriff Eben Olesen (Josh Hartnett) & his wife Stella (Melissa George) must try to hide & make it through the 30 days of night until helps arrives in the form of the sun…

This New Zealand & American co-production was directed by David Slade & this horror film did pretty good box-office back in 2007 & I have to say I rather liked it, I didn’t think it was any sort of classic but I definitely liked it. The script by Steve Niles, Stuart Beattie & Brian Nelson was based on the Dark Horse graphic novel of the same name by Niles & is a pretty grim ‘base under siege’ type horror thriller that is best described as a cross between The Thing (1982) & John Carpenter’s Vampires (1998) (coincidently both of which were directed by John Carpenter which means absolutely nothing, come to think of it it’s not to dissimilar to Ghosts of Mars (2001) also directed by Carpenter…) as it’s set in a freezing snow covered isolated location & features hordes of blood drinking vampires, it certainly takes itself very seriously & there isn’t a light hearted moment in it but it is quite often very intense & I did like it’s conviction. The character’s are slightly better than what one would expect, both Sheriff Oleson & his wife have personality which makes the downbeat ending a bit of a bummer. I mean after watching a fairly grim & intense Vampire flick for 100 odd minutes featuring plenty of death & destruction I would have liked a bit more cheerful ending but that’s just me. There’s enough action & gore to satisfy hardened horror addicts although not all aspects of the story are as good as I would have liked. For instance who were the Vampires? Where did they come from? If it was blood they were after why did they kill people in such a way all their blood was splattered over the wall or floor? Why did that main Vampire at the end fight Sheriff Oleson? Why did all the other Vampires just stand there & watch as their leader was killed? Why didn’t they then kill Oleson?

Director Slade does a very good job here & films with style in full 2:35:1 widescreen, some of the opening shots of the Alaskan horizon as the sun sets over the snow covered landscape looks great & he thankfully keeps his camera nice & steady so we can actually see the carnage. I loved the aerial shot from above the town as the camera moved over the main street as the vampires attack, there are huge red splodges of blood everywhere, fires burning & Vampires attacking people all viewed in one continuous cool looking shot from the sky! The special effects are impressive, both the CGI computer variety & the more traditional prosthetic make-up effects sort. The Vampire creatures look very good & quite intimidating, I love how they walk around with old blood stains from their victims on their faces & clothes & don’t bother to wash it off. There’s some good gore here as well, there is plenty of blood splatter with chopped off heads, decapitations, slashed & bitten out throats, gunshot wounds including Vampires having their heads literally shot off, blood drinking & a real crowd pleasing moment when a huge trench is used to carve up several Vampires as well as a cool scene at the end when a Vampire falls into a masher & is suitably mashed. The film has a good atmosphere & a real sense of isolation, there’s some nice jump out of your seat moments too.

With a supposed budget of about $32,000,000 30 Days of Night is well made with high production values. Although set entirely within the snow covered confines of Alaska in the U.S. 30 Days of Night was in fact filmed entirely in New Zealand. The acting is good from all involved, in case any football fans from the UK are wondering the main Vampire played by Ben Foster is not the same Ben Foster who is currently one of Manchester United’s goalkeepers! Credit where credit is due Melissa George is nice & easy on the eye too.

30 Days of Night is a really good horror thriller that I enjoyed a lot, the story isn’t quite as tight as I would have liked (how did that kid who popped up at the end survive for so long?) but it makes for good late night entertainment which might even give you a few scares. Followed by the made-for-TV mini-series 30 Days of Night: Blood Trails (2007).” –Paul Andrews ([email protected]), imdb.com

This is a slick, creepy and atmospheric movie that oozes class. The best vampire flick I have seen in a long while. If you liked Near Dark, you will like this. Not entirely sure about the ending which I think lets it down a bit but the rest of the movie is well worth this minor hiccup.

Some nice imagery and a descent adaptation, but could’ve been better. I wish this one had done a better job conveying the sense of isolation and hopelessness I got from movies like John Carpenter’s The Thing. I understand the idea was to make the vampires more animalistic, but in doing so also made them less interesting. Also, I didn’t care about the damn couple and their relationship crap. And that ending was better when I saw it in Blade II.

Visualy fantastic of course. Only because the storyboard is a graphic novel. The thing that seperates this from other vamp movies to me was the intense feeding on a victim. Unlike the Bram Stoker guide to feeding or Universal followers this made it so much more intense. While watching I actually felt bad for the folks getting ripped up, almost never happens. Good adaption of a graphic novel.

For once a mainstream horror movie thats rated R for gore and violence and doesn’t suck. This movie did have a lot more potential then it was able to provide, but overall it was a fairly original vampire flick with plenty of entertaining qualities. I would watch it again and would recommend this movie to just about anyone. In short could have been better, but the results are satisfying even if then end resembled a vampire movie from the 80′s staring the Cory’s.

A brillant IDEA that was lost in a medioker script that was even futher lost in the overtly bad acting. I saw an episode of Tales from the crypt many many years ago that had a very similar story line but it did it RIGHT. 30 Days of Night is a wast of time for real horror buffs but the average horror fan might walk away pleased with this. I give 30 Days of Night 2 Vampires out of 10 Vampires. Enjoy……. if you can !

very disapointed with this film, with sam raimi’s name attatched to it, i was hoping it would be a little bit better than it was, but it wasnt, which reminds me that raimi’s name has been attatched to alot of dud’s lately in my opinion anyway. this is the average new vampire movie that offers nothing that interestingly new about the sub genre, and i could care less about the characters, the best thing about the film was the main idea that it rode on and that is taking place in a area where it has 30 days of night, therefor the vampires cant really go away at all, that idea was good, but what starts out as a good idea isnt always a good film.

Vampire films are my vice and this is one of my favorites. Josh Hartnett is a hometown man of the law, reminiscent of Ben Affleck in Phantoms. Ben Foster is dangerous and steals the beginning scenes. On the other side, Melissa George is stagnant and whiny in most of her scenes and should have been replaced. The scenes of survival with the townsfolk can drag, but worth some patience for the gore ahead. The vampires weren’t funny, and looked like starving animals (the eyes killed it!)

One of the best vampire movies to be seen in a long time. A clever concept if I have ever come across one. Vampires descend on a town where the sun doesn’t shine for 30 days , brilliant!! I love the fact there is nothing romantic about these vamps, they just want to tear you from limb to limb and they look totally terrifying . Starts slow but the build up is worth it for when the vampires actually do start to attack its edge of the seat stuff. The alaskan snowy setting also makes for a great change. The cast do pretty well, Josh Hartnett is actually good in a movie for once but the film belongs to Melissa George and Ben Foster. Casual but intense gore and violence make this a must for blood hounds and the climax is fantastic. I love a downbeat ending. Looking forward to the sequel to this one.

I thought 30 days of night was the best vampire movie I have ever seen.

Storyline: A small town named barrow in alaska is attacked by a large horde of blood thirsty vampires. With no where to run they must stand and fight until the sun rises up, but the only problem is: it stays dark for 30 days.

Acting: Perfect, josh hartnett delievered a solid great performance and ben foster was a legend.

Special Effects: Wicked! There was some much gore and it looked so real I was thinking, is this a vampire movie or a snuff film? Necks getting bitten, limbs flying everywhere, decapitations and bodies getting sliced in half, don’t forget the occasional head shot. The decapitations looked so real and they showed them in clear light and in full detail.

Best Scene: When josh hartnett drives his arm through the main vampires mouth and out the back of his head.

Ending: josh hartnett injects himself with vampire blood in order to fight the main vampire. But when the sun comes up he dies :(

Overall this movie was pure entertainment and wickedly good. I read the comic way before the movie came out and I thought it was awesome, and when I heard a movie was coming out of it I shitted my pants. The movie stayed true to the comic and didn’t go off into another tanjin. I proudly give this movie a 10/10 I would give it 6 skulls if I could.

30 Days of Night is one of my favorite horror movies. I usually HATE gory movies, but this movie was amazing. This basically introduced me to more gory movies. The way this movie was shot blew me away. Also, the bluish hue made the whole movie eerie and gave even more emphasis on the blood splattering everywhere. The best shot was when there was a bird’s eye view of the main street of Barrow and the total bloodbath below.
All together an amazing movie: 10/10

I’m not the biggest fan of vampire movies (mostly due to the romantic/sexy/goth portrayal we usually get, which doesn’t float my boat personally), but I was intrigued by the concept here (perhaps a lingering after-effect of my love of The Thing, but I have a marked affinity for dark, cold, polar or near-polar settings). … I was pleasantly surprised! It was MUCH better than I had expected, honestly. Great atmosphere, and I LOVED the creepy, ghoulish (yet IMO somehow very sexy) vampires. The end was a bit of a let-down for me, but not enough to significantly hurt my opinion of the film. In my opinion, definitely one of the better horror movies to come out in recent years.

30 days of night isn’t what you think it is. I know what you’re thinking. Oh, another unnecessary vampire flick that depends on gore rather than scares. That sentence is completely useless in this case. 30 days of night is a fun, gory ride that each minute you watch the movie, you just want more. It starts out a little slow, but after that the movie actually goes somewhere. Would I buy it? Maybe if it’s in the $5 bin. Would I see it again? Of course. Overall, 30 days of night is a great vampire flick and also a great movie to see with friends.

A cult comic book turned into an above average film.

There are some nice touches- the overhead tracking shot as the vampires slaughter the town’s folk.

The biggest gripe for me is that something is missing- the sense of hopelessness that you get from the comic. The desperation.

Like everything Raimi has touched since the Evil Dead trilogy- this is good, but it could have been better.

It wasn’t what I expected and took a few times of me watching it to know if I liked it or not. What I liked about it was that it wasn’t your average vampire film, they made the vampires more demonic and more of monsters. I like how they showed the struggle of survival and let you get to know the characters. It had great gore (though I wish there was a little more). Over all it could have been a little better but I really enjoyed it so I’d give it a 8/10

Most horror movies that I have seen lately are rather lame because they rely on special effects to tell the story. I am happy with this movie because it does not rely on special effects. What may disturb some viewers is the vampire story is not told from the traditional romantic point of view of the vampire. The vampires are portrayed as vicious killing machines (not because they are evil, but because they are on top of the food chain). Imagine if you will the point of view of the chicken compared to us. The acting was so-so but it is noir movie so the story is actually told the environmental setting of the movie. It is about being isolated and cut off from the rest of the world. The movie could have been a silent movie and the end result would have been the same. A pleasant surprise is Josh Hartnett’s portrayal of the tragic hero Evan. He gives just the right amount of acting to the role. He is not to dramatic with the acting nor is his dialogue campy. But the noir aspect of the movie will cause this movie to be cult hit rather than a blockbuster. Simply because society is not versed in the noir movie tradition.

What is 30 Days of Night but another great adaptation of a great comic book. After successful comic movies like Sin City and 300, a more gorier and scarier comic book has been transformed into a movie. This movie has everything that a vampire flick should have from the excessive gore, to the pale looking bloodsuckers, to the charismatic feel of the villain, to the intensity of violent vampire attacks, all jam packed in a 2-hour movie. I loved this movie for many reasons but the main reason why this movie struck high on my horror-meter was because of the uniqueness of having vampires invade Alaska of all places. We all know about their months without sun (Insomnia), but none of us really knew how a vampire could use that to his or her advantage.

The one thing that really blew my mind away about this movie was the excellent performance by Josh Hartnett, who we all know did some pretty OKAY performances back in the past (The Faculty, Halloween H2O and Pearl Harbor). This movie should probably be considered as Hartnett’s best performance in a long, long time. This movie really distinguishes him as an actor that doesn’t have to play horrible teenage rolls, with the exception of Black Hawk Down. As for the other performances, they were awesome. The horrifying and calm performance by Danny Huston was so believable and so scary that it was scary enough for him to just stand there with his mouth open. I thought he looked like Tom Hanks for a minute. Other great performances that I should credit would be Mark Rendall who played Hartnett’s brother, Ben Foster as The Stranger and Megan Franich who played one of the more creepier vampires of the clan.

The blood and horror were there, no doubt about it. Vampires jumping out from behind closed doors and sides of houses, vampires crawling up on the roofs of buildings, vampires viciously attacking people and taking out their heads and stomachs. I think that the most disturbing and creepiest part of the entire movie would be the little girl vampire but I will only say that about this movie. The other horror elements made this concoction more violent and mal-adjusted than any other vampire movie. I don’t want to explain too much about the horror without revealing any key plot points but I will say this, the vampires are scarier than any that I have ever seen. But what do you expect with performances like Huston, Franich, John Rawls and Andrew Stehlin? Another great element that makes this movie worth seeing is the great scenery and establishing shots. The camera angles and cinematography where so stylized and unique, that it actually looks like it came directly from the comic book. The shots had depth to them, not just headshots and cheesy widescreen views but it incorporated great pans and zooms that gave the viewer a better perception of what was going on. Case in point, when the vampires destroy the town, it used a great beginning shot of Huston standing by what he had created, along with his fellow vampires in the background, but they were someone hidden behind the whole mess. For some shots, of course, they used the same technique that Sin City and 300 used where the actor was behind a green screen and the scenery used sharp contrasts, giving it a more believable comic book feel. In fact, the whole set of the Alaskan town was pretty good.

I do believe, and I certainly hope, that this movie does not just go down as another mindless vampire flick because, to contrary, it was not. It was much more that just your average bloodsucker movie, it was a roller coaster ride into hell with a few hills that barley reach to heaven. It was charismatic, suspenseful, horrifying and, at points, funny. I would strongly recommend this movie to anybody who is a fan of the bat-and-fang genre and even more to those who love a good scare. It was a great movie to see. Just think how much limelight that Alaska has gotten these past weeks.

30 Days of Night is by far one of the best, if not the best film given to us from Ghost House Pictures. Just about everything in this movie was amazing. The setting, Barrow Alaska is the perfect setting for such a movie. The movie had a pretty strong cast, with no “bad” acting, from Josh Hartnett’ so-so acting as Eben to Ben Foster’s creepy character “The Stranger” to Andrew Stehlin as Arvin (there is a shot of his character that is one of the creepiest vampires shots to date in my opinion) and so on. I loved this movie because it was nice to see people taking a realistic approach to the horrible scenario they were presented with, granted it led to a not so action packed movie (i was hoping for a little more than it gave). The vampires were wonderful shown as the vicious creatures pretty close to my mental image of what i believe a vampire should be like. I was disappointed by two things. First off a lot of the vampires seemed to look a lot alike, seemed like each vampire had a twin almost. Second as i’m sure most of you will agree with the ending was kinda lame. Although i can’t say im surprised because i think most horror movies have pretty bad endings. Overall this is one of the best vampire movies in my opinion especially in more recent times. I hope all the people who didn’t like it will someday see it as the great flick it really is.

30 Days Of Night is possibly the best vampire movie ever made. The setting, the characters, and the vampires are really well thought out, and done in this movie. The horrible invasion of these vampires, in the dead of darkness, with only a few survivours left to fight out the night. 30 Days Of Night is a perfect vampire flick, with thrilling action and some gory as hell deaths. No vampire movie could do better than this. The vampires were wonderfully done up, the make up, special effects, and the overall aspect of these flesh munching devils! And, each vampire actually had a story, had a background, which most vampire movies dont do nowa – days. I hope they make more movies like this, because this is a fresh start for vampire flicks, and I hope it always will be.

What could be more terrifying than 30 days of endless night when you are besieged by vampires? The violence and gore is horrific and the atmosphere bleak and nerve-jangling. The vampires themselves are genuinely horrifying. No camp,I want to suck your blood here. The only gripe I have with this is a real lack of character development and the ending was a bit of a let down. But I can forgive this as I was completely entertained.

The setting was fantastic, too – no better place than an isolated town in the middle of nowhere, cut off because of a harsh winter. The cinematography was great, here.

Acting was a letdown, though. Josh Hartnett is a terrible actor. And the ending will make you roll your eyes about how cheesy it is.

The leader of the vampires references several things that left me asking what is he talking about… I had not and have not read the comics the movies is based on so maybe stuff is answered there, but I would expect the movie to catch everybody up at least… SUPER gory and the screams are horrifying, well done there, but again, I cared much more for the suspense and gore of the second half… Overall, alright movie, there were some funny bits, but overall just alright…

If you’re a gore kind of person, you’ll love it, if you’re a suspense horror fan, stick through to the second half!

Thought this had to be one of the best vampire movies ever created, talk about flawless cinemetography, and relenquishing the mushy glittery emotional view vampires have become, bringing back the ruthlessness you would expect a progeny of Satan to be. The vampires in this were relentless, as they should be, there was no negiotiation, either you lived or died.
My only gripe with this film, was Josh Hartnet. Now i loved him in other things (40 days,40 nights/ Black Hawk down etc) but i thought he was terrible in this, along the lines of Ashton Kutcher terrible, and only a few actors, actress get there. He bored me, and if it werent for the vampire scenes, and intense carnage, i dont believe i would watch. Luckily, hes a decent actor, and the movie was good enough to sustain itself. Its too good to pass by.

Finally the vicious, blood-thirsty killing machines are back. As soon as Twilight hit the scene i was afraid that vampire’s had lost their bad-ass rep. Vamp movies are aloways my favourite and those piece of shit twilight movies totally turned me off. Vampires who sparkle. Ya great idea. But thank you 30 days of night, you totally made me reconsider. This movie can be placed right alongside Interview with the Vampire and Bram stoker’s Dracula as one of my favourite vamp movies.

A beautifully violent film concerning vampires attacking a small, dark, snow bound town. This vampire film is unlike others as the vampires are used more like zombies, which is absolutely fine by me! These vampires are basically clever zombies and we follow a group of survivors trying to survive the vampire outbreak until sun rise. Every emotion counts and there are some fantastically, violent entertaining scenes to keep you on your toes. I enjoyed it very much, with the ending being very sad and emotional. I’d recommend this to any horror Joe!

The story is about an isolated Alaskan town which is plunged into darkness for thirty days every year.. and as the sun sinks below the horizon.. a bloodthirsty gang of vampires terrorize the whole town taking innocent lives! Sinister, brutal, and unrelentingly violent, 30 Days of Night is probably one of the best vampire movies to have released in over a decade! The vampires in this movie are plain bloodthirsty beasts.. just like they should be.. unlike a few pretty looking teenagers pretending to be vampires(yeah.. you got it.. i’m talkin’ about Twilight!) anyways, the movie pulls off to a slow start, it had a few plot holes and the ending seemed a bit rushed.. that kind of disappointed me.. but a great movie anyway!

    that movie is a masterpiece
it is very frightening and anxious with vampires who are modern, brutal, evil and totally unstoppable and with excellent actors and perfectly real situations and reactions too
and finally some vampires who aren’t afraid to spill the blood of the innocents
all those facts made this movie best of the best

An average vampire movie that totally didn’t impress me.
The plot is really great and interesting, it’s extremely atmospheric, the Alaskan settings and the vampire make-up look terrific – unfortunately there are way too many boring and tedious scenes, the acting ranges from decent to annoying (Josh Hartnett is such an untalented douchebag) and the script is often pretty poor (dull pacing, ridiculous ending), not forgetting some horrible-looking CGI.
    Not recommended.

We horror fans always appreciate new ideas thrown into old horror sub-genres, and the vampire sub-genre is one of the oldest around. The idea of centering this film on the Alaskan phenomena of suffering a month-long delay of sunlight was a genius idea that really surprises me given I had never seen this used in previous horror films, despite this being the PERFECT atmosphere for some vampire carnage. We all know they cannot handle UV radiation, so the conditions could not be any better for some great vampire action. Thank screenwriters Steve Niles(original creator), Stuart Beattie(Hard Candy), Brian Nelson(Hard Candy, Devil) for this awesome story.

The rest of the storyline plays out well thanks to this unique idea, providing for many thrills, chills, and constant developments. By now you should all know that I am a huge idea of nowhere-to-run scenarios, and a small sleepy town plunged into darkness and miles from any other sign of remote civilization provides a nice nowhere-to-run scenario, and I loved it. None of our characters were safe, at any time, thanks to the vampires having free reign due to the lack of UV radiation, so once the vamps show up the tension is high and it never truly relents. We experience our protagonists resorting to hiding out in attics for extended periods of time, much like what Anne Frank went through, except she of course experienced a different breed of monster. Don’t think that for this film taking place in an isolated area that the film does not “move” very often, because it does. Our characters are constantly forced to relocate here and there, which is not only an anti-boredom technique but brings on some good tension as well given they must put themselves out in the open to do so. The ravaging gang of vampires were cool to watch, and even came with their own completely original language as well. We do not get much background information on them, and in this case I did not mind that one bit because simply put…it worked. Sadly, we do not really get many characters worth fighting for in this one, however that may fall more on acting and casting than the actual storyline. We do not get much character drama either, which came as a surprise to me given the circumstances they are facing. Usually in such dire situations there is a lack of social order and people begin arguing and going amok, but for some reason we do not get much of that in this film. It is not a requirement, but it sure does make for some added conflict that we could have used.

Director David Slade is no newbie to the horror genre thanks to his well-received breakout film Hard Candy(which I did not care much for), and it shows in this film. Is cinematography is awesome, providing a beautiful visual tone to the watch that only exemplified the vast amounts of gore he threw into the carnage. Slade provided some of the best vampire action I have ever seen, giving us maniacal vampires who stop at nothing to satisfy their bloodthirsty needs. I was really surprised at just how mean-spirited these vampires were, not merely just killing for blood but aiming to inflict as much pain as possible on their victims, something we rarely see employed but an awesome and well executed idea in this film. The look and mannerisms of the vampires rocked, and at times they seemed more like a mix between vampires and the high-speed “infected” from films like REC and 28 Days Later, except with the acrobatic abilities that vampires tend to possess. I mentioned that this film “moves” well thanks to its constantly changing sets, and I must commend Mr. Slade for using some awesome and creative sets which definitely helped with the film’s pacing. For a film just a few minutes shy of a two-hour runtime, good direction is key if you want to keep the viewer’s attention. At times the film did tend to slow down a bit, but thanks to the film’s captivating visuals you should not find yourself dozing off with this one.

Overall, this is a fun and cool vampire watch that delivers heavily on the action and gore, and comes with a unique story thanks to some ingenuity as well. Fans of real vampires giving real carnage should find this a fun watch, and it comes recommended from me.

`30 Days of Night’ is a 2007 American horror/thriller movie based on the comic book/graphic novel miniseries of the same name. The film is directed by David Slade and stars Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, and Danny Huston, the story focuses on an Alaskan town beset by vampires as it enters into a thirty-day long period without sunshine.

The director David Slade made a brilliant movie, while it’s not the best directories of a Vampire Movie but I like how he captures the killings full on (goes all guts with it) & the way he follows the vampire and survivors is good, while having one my favorite moment of David Slade directions in the movie was which is the upper air of the town when the vampire start attacking all the town folk & you see it happen (like looking at a road map, but with people dying from vampires & had a smile on my face from seeing red blood splattered on the sown) , the acting by Josh Hartnett as Sheriff Eben Oleson (did a ok/plain job as his character, not his best though) , Melissa George as Stella Oleson (did a perfect show case as her character, but could have done better) , Danny Huston as Marlow (which he did a excellent job as the head of the vampire group/cult), Ben Foster as The Stranger (did the best performance in the Movie has he show both character & emotion), Mark Boone Junior as Beau Brower, Mark Rendall as Jake Oleson, Amber Sainsbury as Denise, Nathaniel Lees as Carter Davies & the rest of the listed cast in the film were all pretty well acting, but seemed all stale most through the film.

The Movie has some great fighting from the vampires & some great scene but there are some scene that are just wasteful to the movie & its style based on the comic book/graphic novel, I really did like the death out of this movie as they just made it full on gory, sick, bloody, violence & gutsy to make such a bloodthirsty vampire movie which I thought was cool, but has no creative intakes just full on gore & head ripping (no a romance or serious Vampire Movie). It has its moments of jumpy, thrilling, creepy & terrifying moments, but doesn’t offer much of a scary vampire movie, just more on the disgusting side (which I think they missed the mark of making it scary) and for its storyline it showcase on the whole dark town for the whole 30 days (a month in ever words) & dose focuses on the group of survivors & the group of the Vampire attacking the town which it was a decent/brilliant take on the story as it kept me mostly interested on emotion & blood splattered.

I thought the make-up artist was really well place to graver on the character of the vampire & the blood, guts & head ripping off was mostly good, but did look alot visual then creating & the special effects were pretty amazing and really loved the whole dark (quite gothic) visual effects that were used in the set of the movie (which I loved the teeth that the vampire’s have as it must be easier to eat us with because they looked sharp), I thought the texture & style was cool & unique for the movie setting which was pretty awesome on its showcase towards the movie, it sound effects were fucked up on the sound that they picked for the film which dose help it seem more creepy/scary and I have to say the movie dose bring some emotion depth into the movie, but with not much of the character depth in the film.

It must be the freakiest & fucked up 30 days of the lives (and who every survivors will need serious mental help after that ordeal) and I would not want to live anywhere like that small town every!!! Period and the ending of this movie had some shock & a bit of a twisted or turn of events towards the movie, but the very last scene to me (which is a never favourtie of main of David Slade directories towards the movie) seemed more on the capture of the beautiful show of the sun rising up and that the relationship between Josh Hartnett & Melissa George characters was the last moment of love & forgiveness which I just loved it & was very beautiful, sad & somewhat upsetting to watch when Josh Hartnett character that was turning in to ash at the end of the movie.

(OH and for having ’30 Days of Night’ on two disc special edition, I really thought the special feature where very entering & was happy to see what they did & how they did the movie really, very well done special feature. Also the Movie does have some hinted blends of element theme & back ground source of John Carpenter `Assault on Precinct 13′ & `The Thing’ (Remake), with George A. Romero `Night of the Living Dead’ which dose work well together in this good Vampire Movie.)

This movie is perfect, with a perfect location, 30 Days Of Night in a small town where the sun rarely comes up, which is perfect for the vampires since they wont have to worry about running away from sunlight.

Honestly, I didn’t think this was as great as everyone says it is. Sure, the concept is brilliant, but I felt that the film itself dragged on at times. And as good as the acting may have been, I just found the characters to be annoying and I didn’t care about what happened to them at all. In fact, I just wanted them all to die. But Slade did create a really nice atmosphere, and it was good to see vampires be dangerous again.

    For more reviews visit http://www.RockportFilm.com

In recent years there have been tons of comic books and graphic novels adapted into movies with varying success. For the most part they are a goldmine that Hollywood will continue to tap way past their usefulness. 30 Days of Night is a graphic novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith that gives an interesting new spin to the overly used vampire genre. Taking place in Barrow Alaska, one of the most northern cities in the world, every winter the sun doesnâe(TM)t rise above the horizon for 30 days. A perfect place for a clan of blood thirsty vampires to set up camp.

30 Days of Night was released in the fall of 2007 and directed by David Slade, who also directed one of the Twilight movies and the brilliant Hard Candy that I previously reviewed on this blog. 30 Days stars Minnesotaâe(TM)s own Josh Hartnett as Eben the townâe(TM)s young sheriff who works to keep the peace in very cold and depressing atmosphere. Melissa George is cast as Stella the best looking fire marshal in film history. When you think fire marshal you think of a big old burly guy with a beard, a grizzled veteran with decades of real world experience and not a blonde haired supermodel. Anyway I guess she is whole lot better to look at, and she also doubles as Ebenâe(TM)s estranged wife. As Barrow starts shutting down for the 30 days a bunch of strange things start happening. A team of sled dogs is murdered and the internet and phones stop working. Coincidence, I think not. The leader of the Vampires is played by Danny Houston who really gives life to his undead character of Marlow. The Vampires talk in a foreign language that was created specifically for this film. Although a number of questions do remain like where did they come from? Where do they go for the other 11 months of the year? These questions might be answered in the graphic novels, but I have yet to read any of them.

After a bloody feeding frenzy wipes out most of the towns remaining people, Eben and Stella help protect a small group of survivors. This truly is an R rated horror film and not one of those kid friendly PG-13 flicks. The blood and gore is top notch and flows freely to satisfy your most hardcore fan. I have two wonderful words for you âeoeNeck Chopâe and there are a few of them. The acting is actually pretty good and the pacing is perfect. The ending is kind of a head scratcher, but with the poor quality of horror movies being released these days Iâe(TM)m willing to let it go. Last year a direct to DVD sequel was released called 30 Days of Night: Dark Days featuring all new characters and a recast version of Stella. Itâe(TM)s a cheap and pointless piece of trash. Enough said. Although the original movie is definitely worth a buy!
