This movie is really good. The storyline is good and the characters interaction is well done. The creatures were freaky. The tension in the cave was really good. We wend down in a cave a couple weeks later and man it was on my mind the whole time. The movie is fast paced and full of tense moments to keep you on the edge of your seat.
rent this or just go buy it.

This film was OK. I didn’t find any of the characters interesting, so I didn’t even care if any of them got out of the cave. The film moves too fast to build any real tension and never slows down to really focus on anything. A poor follow up to Dog Soldiers for Neil Marshall.

An absolutely terrifying movie. I went to see this the week before my birthday, back in 2006 when it came out in the US, with my mom. By the time the creatures strike, we were both sinking in our seats. I’m not claustrophobic, but the scenes in the cave were absolutely freaky. I felt like I was stuck down there with them.

The screenplay is very well-written — some of the characters are relatable, though I wish some of the more minor female characters could’ve been fleshed out more. I felt absolutely nothing for anyone but Juno, Sarah and Beth… but I think that was the intention as Sarah is obviously from the beginning the centerpiece of the film, and is played wonderfully by Shauna MacDonald.

The gore effects and the creatures all seem very real, and some of the scenes are genuinely scary, unlike recent films like Shutter, or One Missed Call. Please, keep the Asian Horror remakes away and bring more films like this into theaters. It’s what we really want to see.

“If nightmare inducing horror is not your bag then the less you know about The Descent the better. Geordie writer-director Neil Marshall has delivered an accomplished, well acted, out and out horror movie that comes as much of a pleasant surprise as his first major feature Dog Soldiers did back in 2002. Shot in a mere 7 weeks The Descent sees a sextet of undeniably attractive action women leaping headfirst into an Appalachian potholing adventure that goes wrong so quickly you are left wondering if any one of them will survive, let alone ever see daylight again.

There are comparisons to be drawn to Marshall’s ‘Soldiers of course – again the story is stark and wonderfully economic. Again there is group of six people, predominantly one sex accompanied with a lurking, ominous threat and again there are more nods to popular film culture than you probably realise. The Descent however has a sense of humour that is suitably pitch black.

Long before the cave appears we play witness to a traumatic event that underlies the plot and serves to both unite and tear apart relationships in equal measure. Mostly affected are fragile Sarah and physically strong Juno, an adrenaline junkie who leads the group further and further beneath the ground. No time is wasted in recreating the primal feel of crawling through tunnels with hard hats scraping the dust from the rocks, choking and inducing paranoia all the way as it lingers in the stale, torchlit air. It’s here Marshall gets a little inventive. Playing with various different lighting techniques our heroines become colour coded through scenes via glow-sticks, flashlights and video camera. Sounds echo when visuals are briefly lost and deliciously bone crunching they are too. Events escalate quickly and the whole ride becomes what can only be described as a non-stop relentless assault on the senses that will demand repeated viewing.

The only thing that will ruin this movie for you is word of mouth, which ironically is exactly what this film will need to become commercially viable. But the less you know, the more you will enjoy it. Have fun spotting references to Carrie and Apocalypse Now by all means, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a mere standard entry into the much saturated genre-movie staple. The Descent will rank as one of the most unashamedly terrifying British films ever made. It was made by people that love good cinema, and it shows. The Descent was made before The Cave, and now has an alternate ending for new audiences.” –matt_cub, imdb.com

Director/Writer Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers) really captures the feel of claustrophobia and the tension of being in tight quarters during the first half of The Descent. He perfectly executes the element of foreshadowing in the beginning of the film. Likewise to Hitchcock, he’s heavy handed when it comes to symbolism, and doesn’t spoil the classic murder scenes by driving them down your throat every two seconds.

The Descent starts to really shine during its second half, when the Crawlers start popping up. I loved how the Crawlers were a necessary breed of a bat, human, etc. The Blair Witch Camera scene was executed very well by Marshall, as it was very surprising and scary. While the Crawlers start attacking and the girls split up, the Sarah vs Juno plot line starts to take center stage. This plot was great because it ultimately showed that once you put humans in a dire straits situation, their behavior starts to dramatically change. Towards the end we see the character of Juno switch from arrogant to brave friend while the other girls that are left go from trustworthy to wanting to leave Sarah for dead.

Furthermore, these characters are not cardboard, one dimensional female damsel’s in distress you find in other horror movies nowadays. The Descent is so effective with characterization, that it could be seen as a character study of Sarah (Shauna MacDonald). Her subplot is one of my favorite parts of the film, and keeps your attention from the opening reel.

The Descent is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. In fact, it’s not just a horror, but can work as a drama or suspense film as well. There’s so much more I could say about this film than I’ve already said. I wish I had seen it in theaters. As a final note, I’m eager to see what director Neil Marshall comes out with next.

the crawler is such a scary ass creature, the pt were it smells the girl and comes right into the camera is great. The ending provides a event all to itself. The clausterphobia ends, and you feel like all is well, and you get 1 more big scare. Its kickass.

I’m extremely cynical when it comes to horror movies, especially ones that were hyped to me as much as this. With PG13 crap like THE GRUDGE and (although enjoyable) pseudo snuff like SAW, HOSTEL, etc. reighning over the horror genre, it was nice to see something innovative and relying more on atmosphere and mental fear than cheap gore. All I can say is that this fully SURPASSED all hype and expectations. At the risk of losing my rep, this film actually scared the living crap out of me more than a few times. The claustrophobic discomfort, the emotional anguish, psychological tension, and disturbing horror all combined amazingly well to make the scariest film that I’ve seen since the first 2 ALIEN films. Managing to completely avoid any cheese or typical horror cliches, this truly belongs the title of HORROR CLASSIC. Truly original and scary as hell.

This movie was pretty entertaining. I really like the premise – spelunkers go into the wrong cave system and get killed by a terrifying breed of humanoid cave-dwelling monsters – but the movie doesn’t quite live up to the awesome plotline.
The gore is pretty good, albeit you have to wait until halfway through the movie before you see anything bloody or disgusting (excepting the opening sequence).
It’s not on par with Dog Soldiers, but it’s worth a watch nonetheless. But it doesn’t deserve higher than a 4-star rating.

WOW! This film takes you on quite a ride! I actually felt as if i was in the cave with them, it was a very claustrophobic and uncomfortable experience which i loved! I love it when horror films make you so inclined in the film your falling off your seat. There are plenty of shocks in this as well so you probably will fall off your seat its brilliant. The only thing I can fault is that some scenes were a bit too dark so it was hard to tell what was happening but its no way near as dark as hills have eyes II which wasn’t very good :(

This film was a blast to watch. Fast paced with tons of ‘jump’ scenes, a good share of gore, great make up effects on the creatures that dwell in the caves, and a not so bad story to boot.

My only complaints about this film was the super fast pace it takes every once in a while, as well as the ultra dark scenes (due to it taking place in a cave) that at times makes it a little difficult to see whats going on. Other than that this is a great movie to sit down and give you a few jumps.

This film is so terrible. Where does most of the light come from in the cave through out the movie? Where did the random river of blood come from? In no way does this film make you feel claustrophobic, that’s like saying The Cave made you feel that way or National Treasure.

I’ve seen this film in theatres and I just watched it again years later and I still find it not interesting or good in any way. If they’re supposed to be expert spelunkers than I would think they would have enough sense not to get stuck into a small hole which I have no idea why they would even try to go into in the first place. Also gliding across an open chasm. How did they think they would get back?

You worst thing about this movie is that the whole reason they go on this trip is because one of the girl’s husband and kid dies. I mean if one of my friend’s family died I wouldn’t be like, “Hey let’s go spelunking!”

Incredible horror movie. With the first half hour being a solid drama and the final 30 minutes being that of sheer terror. The descent is a great accomplishment. This British film takes all the stereotypes of horror films and turns them upside down. With moments of pure terror and uncomfortable claustrophobia, the descent is an effective and terrifying film.

First off, I gotta address the comment by mawanne, yo, if you dont like a movie, thats cool, everyones entitled to their own opinion, but every point you tried to make was stupid and incorrect.# 1 The “pool” of water and blood came from their being hundreds of dead animals ripped apart down there.# 2 The minimal amount of light that was in the cave came from their lights, and the fact that if their was no light, how the fuck could we watch this movie? # 3 Where the fuck else were they supposed to go they were stuck, they had to go into the hole, and they had to cross the fuckin gap. and lastly, these girls all had an adventure together every year, thats why they went, and what the fuck kind of a point is that? thats completely irrelavant. Were you like on acid when you watched this fuckin movie? Or you just cant pay attention. This movie established a rediculous sense of claustraphobia and terror, this was the best horror movie to come out in a few years, IN MY OPINION.

They expedition goes wrong, when hungly, and damn freaky creatures watch there every move, and pick the fine looking women off one by one! I have to say, the acting is brilliant. And I am really glad there wasn’t no messing around in this film, it was straight to point action, right from the start! Gory action, wonderful action, and some menacing looking creatures, The Descent isn’t for the faint hearted!

    The Descent
    2/15/2010

The Descent is one of the most nerve shredding and scariest movies of the last decade! This was British director Neil Marshall’s second feature film. His first was the brutally vicious werewolf movie “Dog Soldiers”. Neil has a great feel for the horror genre and it shows as there are several homage’s to classic horror films within this movie.

The Descent is a unique film in that it has an almost all female cast. The only male meets a nasty end less than 10 minutes in as his family is involved in a car accident. The man’s wife (Sarah) and daughter (Jessica) survive. Throughout the movie there are small clips of Jessica holding a birthday cake that also comes into play in the UK version ending (more on that later). One year after the accident Sarah meets five of her girlfriends at a cabin for a cave exploring expedition in the Appellation Mountains. There’s nothing like a little spelunking to relive some stress, I guess. This was an all British production that was also filmed in Britain but was set in the eastern United States. It must be our fine American Mountains. All the women are well cast and relatable. At times it can be hard to tell a few of them apart with all their gear on, but the filmmakers do make a conscious effort to avoid any confusion. When they get down in the caves, anyone who is even a little bit claustrophobic will totally freak out. These women are constantly squeezing through tight spaces creating a very tense atmosphere. Since the caves are completely dark the only lights the filmmakers use are the ones brought down by the women. A lot of scenes are lit by flares, giving everything a menacing red or green cast to it.

As they explore deeper and deeper into the caves one of the girls slips down a slope and we get see one the most disgusting injuries known to man (or woman), the compound fracture. Maybe it’s just me but seeing bones protruding through your flesh is just not right. Anytime this happens in a movie you know they are so done for, this was no exception. The bad new continues to mount when they start seeing things. This is our introduction to the Crawlers. These possibly former humans have evolved and adapted to suit their environment. They are completely blind, but have heightened sound and smell. The action between the women and the crawlers is intense and frenetic. This crazy action has its consequences when one of girls mistakenly kills another. What makes this film so scary is the fact that the crawlers are blind. In many instances the women are face to face with them or hiding just inches away. The women get split up and despite their best efforts start to die off. Our main character Sarah turns into a modern incarnation of Sarah Connor from T2. She is quite the crawler killing bad ass.

Like I mentioned in the beginning, the ending has two different versions. The U.S. version has Sarah escaping from the caves and driving off. While the U.K. version adds another scene on top of that making it a much ominous ending. U.S. audiences prefer happy endings, hey who doesn’t. The Brits I guess.

Finally, a fright flick that doesn’t degenerate into mindless idiocy. If all creature features were this good, I’d be one very happy camper. The story is simplicity itself; one year after a devastating personal tragedy, Sarah (Shauna McDonald) re-unites with five of her thrill-seeking girlfriends to get herself back in the game and start putting her life together again. All of the women are experienced climbers, rafters, and the like and the script gives them all individual, engaging personalities. There isn’t a brainless bimbo in the lot and the cast, composed of unknowns, does a remarkable job at breathing life into their roles. Whenever tragedy befalls one, it’s a genuine blow.

For this expedition, the sextet are going to explore a cave in the Appalachains. As mentioned, they’re all experienced with dangerous pursuits, so what could go wrong?

    Plenty.

Juno (Natalie Mendoza) does something unconscionably stupid at the outset of the expedition that endangers the spelunkers right off the bat. The caverns turn out to be far more treacherous and dangerous that anyone expected and the scenes of the women dealing with the dangers and perils of the cave generate so much tension and excitement, that you won’t mind that the monsters don’t show up until the movies final 40 minutes.

But what a 40 minutes it is. The team’s progress is crippled when a member suffers a horrific accident and as the women seek a way back to the surface, Sarah is certain that she saw a person down a tunnel. Juno and the other team members instantly chalk it up to her imagination, but minutes later, the subterraneans descend on them and attack in waves, making a beeline for the food that has wandered into their home.

At this point, the move becomes mercilessly savage. The creatures relentlessly assault the women, who, while terrified out of their wits, are not about to become monster chow if they can help it. The battle scenes are ferocious and unbelievably gruesome; if this had been the cut released theatrically, an NC-17 would have been a given. But this is no murder by numbers slasher flick; the women are strong, smart, and resourceful, and you can’t help yourself rooting for them every step of the way.

Between the non-stop tension and relentless gore, if you’re not a hardcore horror fan, this isn’t for you. But director Neil Marshall has a gift for intelligent horror movies that don’t descend into cliche and stupidity. His Dog Soldiers is a great take on the werewolf genre and this picture ups Dog Soldiers’ scare quotient significantly. If you’ve been repeatedly let down by the recent dreck passing itself off as horror, this is the picture for you.

I watched the Descent at a friends house because it was the only horror on the movie channel. I didn’t expect much….I thought it was just another cookie-cutter Hollywood film. I was wrong. The story is scary before the creatures even show up….the suspense builds and builds and then BAM….monsters!! The lighting and music work together to create an atmosphere I’ve never quite seen before. I’ve watched it about a dozen times and I still love it. FAVORITE SCENE: Creature appears in night vision video camera.

Quality flick. The first two acts are pretty much perfect as Marshall builds a wonderful feel of claustrophobia and tension with the girls simply struggling to keep their heads and find a way out after a cave-in.

Third act veers into traditional horror when the Crawlers show up and feels a little awkward for a bit — all that tight, claustrophobic cinematography turns into shaky-cam run-for-your-life stuff for a few minutes — but settles down nicely into a viscous finale.

Not a film filled with non-stop scares or gore. The Descent takes its time to get going, but that works in its favor. It takes time to set up the characters a bit and define their relationships a bit, which lets us watch how those relationships strengthen or crumble under the pressure of the situation.

Not one of the all-time greats, but certainly one of the better horror films of the last ten years, and definitely worth watching.

I remember first watching the trailer and thinking it wasn’t gonna be much. But man, I should have went to the movies to see this. No matter how many times I watch it those creatures always startle me lol. Beautifully orchestrated brutal atmospheric horror at its best! You HAVE too see this if you haven’t, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

    This movie is simply amazing.
I have yet to see a more complete horror film than The Descent. Quickly becoming my favorite movie all-time, The Descent literally grabs you by the throat and takes you on one hell of a ride.

And for those of us that saw the REAL ending, that completed the movie. The perfect ending to a flawless film.

I loved this movie, the cast was solid, the effects were good, and the monsters were truly menacing.

liked everything about this movie, until the monsters came and it suddenly got very campy. the whole beginning and middle were truly great. the carcass outside of the cave, the cave its self. the arrogance of the girl who doesn’t tell anybody where they are and doesn’t bring a map. the back story of the girl/girls. it all comes together perfectly, and then it just got stupid. definately watch this movie cause it is alot of fun, but get ready to be dissapointed!

    Good movie. I like it.

What else to say? Not that scary really but woot none the less. Girls were hot, creatures mildly creepy (not saying I’d like to come up on one in the dark mind you) and the ending was acceptably realistic and very “horror-movie-esc”… you know the “Aaawww it’s a happy-ever-after… Ha yeah right this ain’t over/you ain’t gettin’ out of this one bish” type ending.

Successfully giving cave divers second thoughts everywhere. :)

This is one of the finest horror films ever made… A realistic, terrifying premise that subjects a normal group of girlfriends to nightmarish circumstances that rapidly degenerate their experiences and humanity to their most primal cores… Jealousy, loyalty, and the brutal, unflinching, will to survive. “Love every day…” Indeed.

I was looking forward to this movie, it has a nice following, but I ended up slightly disappointed. To be completely honest, I think the film would have been a lot better if there were no creatures at all, and it was being trapped that turned the characters against one another. I loved the ending, I loved the claustrophobia of it all, it was very intense in a way I only usually feel when watching movies about war. But the crawlers did nothing for me. Their looks were typical, behavior predictable. I also feel that the film did not need 6 characters. I think 4-5 would have been sufficient. Honestly, in all that dark it was hard to keep track of who died and who didn’t. One of the hikers getting hurt early on was very predictable, just like in The Ruins.

Eh. I think the movie could have been a lot stronger.

Cliché claustrophobic horror film in a cave with cannibalgoblin looking things.

This is a KILLER movie. This exceeds the hype. Strikingly original (how the FUCK could you describe this movie a cliché or average?). A spelunking/humanoid cannibal movie with women in the lead roles, is a first to my knowledge and I’m an old fart. New ground is made here in visceral and emotional terror. The SEQUEL is just as good! Can’t lose with “Descent”. My very highest recommendation. Even the fuckin DVD cover is cool. Look at that, a skull made from the character’s bodies in various poses.

Scared the living shit outta me!!! Holy shit, this was one of the scariest movies I’ve seen in a while. I was afraid to go home alone after watching this! The creatures are just so terrifying and the idea unbearable. One of the reviews states that they didn’t like the movie because it felt claustrophobic. That was the whole point! It wanted the viewers to feel squeamish and claustrophobic while watching it because its so scary and it really gives you an idea of how the characters felt. It is the ultimate movie of karma and I love it for that. Definitely see this one when you get a chance! The only thing I didn’t like about the movie was the British humor; it pissed me off because I didn’t get it LMAO. And of course they just had to go making a sequel which I didn’t even watch fully because it irritated me. Other than that, one of my favorite horror movies now!

Overrated in my opinion, if you have claustrophobia then maybe when the girl gets trapped in the beginning in the tunnel it could freak you out, freaked me out and im not claustrophobic at all. My problem is when they get deeper into the cave. Its very dark and it becomes difficult to remember whos alive and dead and telling them apart in general is a problem. My biggest complaint is the creatures, probably the most unintimidating creatures to be attacked by. The whole time I was wondering why they wouldnt fight. I felt if anyone should be scared it should be the creatures because some people with pickaxes, that can see, came into their cave start killing them off. Idk it just wasnt scary to me. It wasn’t an awful movie, but definatly wouldnt watch it again

One word to describe THE DESCENT?
    Intense.
And it wasn’t even the monsters/Crawlers that scared me. The first hour doesn’t even introduce them.
As a mild sufferer of claustrophobia, I wasn’t really looking forward to watching this. The idea of even going underground and shuffling through miniscule tunnels makes me want to vomit but I sat down with the boyfriend and a ginormous pizza and was let in to an amazing horror movie.
The acting was pretty good, you really do root for characters by the end. The Crawlers were freaky and quite original. Definitely disturbing to think they might have been someone like you and me one time. The kills and the gore were awesome (particularly an eye-gouging scene that made me wince and cheer at the same time).
Without giving much away, THE DESCENT is a thrilling, intense and sometimes truly terrifying movie that will stick with you after viewing!

I think it would’ve worked better without the creatures or maybe they were just hallucinations? I don’t know but the ending definitely leaves that up to interpretation. Otherwise, the claustrophobia is enough, plus the fact of being lost in a massive cave system. And the fact you have an all-female cast, which is different.

I would say it’s very good, probably the best cave horror movie I’ve seen, although it’s not quite a classic.

i did enjoy this film, you could feel how tense the claustrophobia is and the terror it would be. the creatures themselves were half decent. i love the all female cast too, shows women can kick arse!!

saw this movie alone and in pitch darkness, it was good but i wasn’t very scared. That may be because watching horror movies regularly err always made my skin thick. The Descent has some great moments, intense and fast paced and the plot keeps you engaged from beginning to the end.

gripping, intense, with an excellent feel of claustrophobia. Awesome deaths, very scary. LOVE it!

The film did a good job of making the viewer feel like they were in a close-quarters environment. I found the film entertaining and enjoyable with great death scenes.

Official Score: 3.5 / 5
