I really liked this movie except for the ending. It was pretty good for an independent movie. This was my favorite of the first After Dark Horror Fest. Worth a watch!!!
Gravedancers is worth seeing because of some of the interesting creature effects and visuals. Unfortunately the computer graphics kick into overddrive for the finale and it turns into ‘The Mummy’. Worth a rental
I’m agree wit QueenOfHalloween. Bad end but pretty good movie…
Even the director himself admits that his movie wasn’t that great–sometimes he even compares it to a joke. I’m here to say it outright sucked, even for an indie film.
The opening scene was solid and probably the best scene in the movie. After that, you’re thrust into cliché after cliché. It reminded me of those old kid’s books/mini-movies, Goosebumps, but without the solid plot structure. Honestly, some of them have better plotting and stories than this.
I respect and like the director after hearing his commentary. And it would be a lie to say there aren’t some nifty death/scare scenes. But the story and the flow suck, even for amateur filmmakers. Look up Mike Mendez when he makes his next movie–avoid this one with your life unless it’s free to watch on TV.
amazing
Goood ghost flick…
Just registered to post a warning not to waste your time on this laughable piece of crud!
All of the actors look like they’re on their 1st take – like that was just a practise – but if thats the best of their performances – yeesh! – would love to see the blooper reel!
I agree 100% with Jaques – All are capable of better and this is just jaw-dropping-ly bad.
Would give a zero out of ten, but ratings here don’t go that low!
Ah well – goes with the territory.
PS I really don’t understand the main revoew here of this movie – I know we all have different opinions (and thats what makes this site so cool!) but I really got the impression that we are talking about a different movie?? I mean its really bad!
)
this film was a pleasant suprise, except for some dodgy acting an all round decent horror. its a nice change if your bored of teen horror or gore/porn horror.
Great movie, didn’t really care for the ending though.
this was hands down the best after dark film of the first batch, this one had some good scary moments, creepy ghosts, good paced story, well acted, had humor when necessary, overall a fun entertaining ghost film!
i really feat that, after reading the majority of user comments, there may be something wrong with me. i found this movie to be absolutely atrocious. the fear elements were only frightening in the sense that they were truly that awful, and the most enjoyment i got out of the flick were the end credits.
Pretty good.
I truly loved this ghost of a tale, Its by far better then any of the crappy PG-13 ghost stories that have haunted the theaters into not selling tickets. it reminded me of the poltergiest and it was second best to that in my opinion.
not my thing i guess it was just meh to me?
I’ve said this in past Horrorfest film reviews; the series has let me down. However, The Gravedancers was a good film. The Gravedancers is an interesting film spinning the whole ghost story routine up side down, it’s a nice twist too.
The opening previews of Horrorfest films says there films are too disturbing for theaters and such, this is the closest they have came to that statement. There really hasn’t been a Horrorfest film that has disturbed me but this one did. There is a way that the ghosts are made that strikes a note with you. I had never seen a film spin sprits like this. It was very creative and rather terrifying. There is one spirit that scared me big times I get chills thinking of it.
I think the plot of this film is very different from other ghost movies I’ve seen. Many ghost stories share the same aspects and traits which simply gets stale after a while. The Gravedancers is very different and is a breath of fresh air to ghost story enthusiasts.
Overall I think The Gravedancers is a different movie with many nice twists to the ghost story genre. If you enjoy the Horrorfest films check out Borderland as well. I feel The Gravedancers and Borderland are the two best of the series thus far.

Worth Checking out but nothing too special
I might be crazy but I loved this one! Going into it I really thought I would be eh,ok, or that was stupid but I enjoyed every minute of it! The cast was great. The story was new.It had me on edge through the intire film.Horrorfest’s best yet!
ok film. Worth checking out. The ghost are kinda cheesy though.
Browsing through the G section in the movie pit, I saw this movie here, with 4 skulls! I repeat 4. I think my heart stopped, walked out of me, shook around, and went back in. This movie seemed average within the first half, and had some scare. Very minimal, like sand grain scare. But the second half..oh boy. I’ve seen it all but I’d say that was the lamest, cheap-O deep-O ending. Ever ever ever. This movie was not good, was not at all. I got this from a friend who watched it, on my birthday. And I wasn’t about to go back to school and have her ask me what I thought about it, and I’m there cluesless so I saw it..but in all honesty, that’s time I’m never getting back.
This was the best film of the first horrorfest. The story was original and the acting was good, and the ghosts were fuckin scary lookin, especially the big guy who cuts that chicks throat. the end is really cool
A 6? A 6?! I’m offended.
The movie feels so so at first. But it really takes off after a while. Really great effects and some creepy visuals are what make the movie. The ghosts are nothing like you’ve seen before. Plus the final confrontation in the mansion is just sheer edge of your seat badassness.
I am really confused by the good ratings on this movie. I bought the entire Horrorfest I when it was released and found this one to be (besides Reincarnation) the worst one. That isn’t to say that it is my second ‘least favorite,’ but I am saying that it is bad. Purcell is just… ugh… he is not an actor. He just shouldn’t talk in movies. Don’t get me wrong, there are some redeeming qualities with effects, but the giant hand at the end wasn’t even laughable… it was straight-up stupid. I hate this move. I am so very confused with the positive reviews. I think it might have something to do with kids just following B-D’s reviews to make them seem knowledgeable?
Great story, great acting, and great special effects. That’s all I’m gonna say, so go watch it.
Definitely one for the more “Poltergestian” movie goer as it was influenced by that classic film. Unfortunately with a promising first half with some nice atmosphere and the occasional scare, it degenerates into a pastiche, which ends up being a confused jumbled affair with the actors seemingly at a loss as to what they should be doing, and where… and how, for that matter. However, the special effects are quite descent and entertaining…but…
i have to say that for the most part, this movie was really good, but when it came down to finishing strong…it didnt WOW me…. an overall good movie, but the fx at the end were lacking a lot…scary throughout and good costumes for dead people!!!
The acting was beyond laughable, but the scares and the spooks were pretty damn good. Decent enough.
One of the best ghost movies ever made. The plot and story was really good and the atmosphere was really creepy. Some really good effects too.
lets not be over the top here by no means was this a AMAZING movie the effects sent me into a hysteria i was laughing for hours, the acting wasnt so bad, but the overall story and plot was really good definitly one of my favorite horror fest movies from that series
Some great scenes, but also some really bad secenes.
Maybe it’s just me. I thought this movie was pretty bad…not really sure I saw the same movie as everyone else…
This movie was very boring too me,I even watched it again too make sure i did not miss anything and it was still boring……..
Alright movie. Niet great not bad either
damn dis doesnt even deserve an average rating,,,,d plot aint scary,,,d actin pathetic 2 b polite,,,,n d ghosts r hilarious,,,,gore quotient is at minimal,,,,diggin graves might b more fun dan watchin dis movie
Ok–low budget horror with lame acting is par for the course a lot of the time in this genre….but c’mon, the Joker-mask ghosts are horrible–just super-dumbass looking. To it’s credit, this movie actually does have a couple kinda cool/creepy scenes involving the attacking “ghosts of the graveyard”, but the majority of it is just poorly executed cheese. A terrible opening actually got a little better with the main body of the flick—-but what an awful(!) ending. Some Grade Z effects for the climax really ruined any positive vibe that might come through on a review. This is not a good horror movie, but I give it a little bit of credit for at least having a couple decent spooky scenes in the mix.
A highly original supernatural shocker in the vein of classic 70s and/or 80s stuff. Despite the mediocre acting and a few lenghts in the middle, this is really a gorgeous flick, pretty creepy and extremely atmospheric with some brilliant jump scares, nice-looking effects, 3 stunningly scary ghosts and a superb plot.
I’m pretty sure we need more movies like this.
This movie was scary! for a low budget film i actuly think it could have made it to theaters!! it is one of my favorites
usually those after dark movie or whatever they’re called suck terribly, but i stumbled into this gem back when it came out. i picked this up and loved it. cool story, acting is ok, and the cgi is weak but doesn’t ruin anything. the rest suck but mike mendez really had his head in the game, everybody should watch and love this movie
this is more of a funny movie than a horror movie but pretty good low budget movie:)
It was highly original and overall a decent film.
Can I just say this was one of my most wasted hours of my life.
Nice little violent ghost tale.
3 drunken idiots desecrate 3 graves by dancing on them, now the trio find themselves haunted by some nasty spirits. Great measures are taken to minimize the hauntings but a certain saboteur puts a damper on things. Left with no protection the gravedancers get their just desserts. Off the wall ending, fast paced story, and some cool sfx makes this flick worth a watch!
everything about this movie is terrible. really bad take on a ghost story. horrible acting, script, special effx, horrible everything! seriously BD, 4 fucking skulls?
Scary ghost story with some excellent, freaky makeup f/x..every things kosher until the cheesy, poorly realized finale which employs some awful CGI.
I love me a good horror film that combines haunted-house scare-tactics with paranormal encounters with CGI ghosties; but only when it’s a genuinely good show in the end. I’ve fought my way through countless mediocre horror/thrillers which use cheesy, lame scare tactics such as cheap jumps and gore. So why, oh why, is “The Gravedancers” that one movie that impresses me? I mean, it shouldn’t have; it wasn’t even remotely scary, as far as the word goes. However, a movie is a movie; and when it does what it does fairly well, then it’s only fair to give it some credit.
This will never go on to be a horror classic, and I do, by all means, respect that. But “The Gravedancers” is a lot of spooky fun, released in a good time where such things were so scarce, and they still are, unfortunately. It’s not every day that you come across a simple horror film such as this that you can call “fun, fun, fun” without feeling stupid, but here’s that movie, regardless of whether we wanted it or not.
This film is simplistic as hell in its horror and its story-telling, but this turns out to work for the film’s benefit rather than against it. The film is the story of three people; all of whom get drunk one night and dance on some graves, which includes chanting a ghastly poem. They return home safely that night, now knowing of the horror that they have unleashed. Soon, they learn that they have indeed stirred the spirits of three ghosts: an axe-murderer, a youthful pyromaniac, and a rapist. The spirits are reckless, and they want to use their super-awesome ghostly powers to torture our heroes and heroines mentally and physically, as only a movie ghost can do.
The story isn’t terribly well-told from start to finish, and it starts out by being fairly decent, if not mildly unsatisfactory. If “The Gravedancers” would have stayed that way, then I would have hated its guts and its quality. But then came the third act, which was just plain great, in my honest opinion.
The film, which is a true-blue horror movie, it not a scary one. It’s meant to be, but I’ve seen nothing here that does more than simply go “boo!” But I don’t mind a little jump scare once in a while, and to its credit, this movie doesn’t overdo that aspect of scare tactics. Instead of being frightening and disturbing, these last few sequences are fun, well-built, and intense. I was able to enjoy this film, at its fullest, when it was like this. The film feels like a good horror movie, and to me it is. It’s probably one of the better films to be released by After Dark Films, and I like what it does with what it’s got. The cinematography isn’t the prettiest, but being too pretty can take away from the good old “classic horror” feeling once in a while. This film benefits from atmosphere and entertainment. It’s a movie that I wouldn’t mind watching with some friends for some good-natured, cheesy fun. I’d even buy it, maybe. “The Gravedancers” is a recommendation for horror fans. Not for everyone and most certainly not for those who don’t like horror, but this movie is well-built and well-directed. I admire it in a sneaky sort of way; perhaps something sneakier than this film can hope to accomplish. But it’s not what’s sneaky that surprises us here; it’s the quality of the picture. No artistic strings are pulled; nothing impossible is attempted. This is good, straight-forward horror filmmaking, and I’m damn proud to say that it was worth the watch.
I remember watching this film, like a few years ago and I loved it. This is one of the better “After Dark Horrorfest” films ever. It is intense, exciting and in a way, creepy. Recommended.
For those who think the movie is bad and are wondering why it’s getting so many positive reviews, you may want to watch this movie again. It’s honestly one of my favorite horror movies. This movie actually had me jumping out of my chair the first time I seen it. Granted I first saw the movie when I was ten, but I watched it again when I was fourteen, this time with a friend, and we both jumped, almost causing the couch to flip over. I may be young, but I do know what a good horror movie looks like, I have seen 58 after all, and this is a good horror movie.
On a more technical level, the acting is good, the older characters are a really nice change, and there are really decent ‘jump out of your seat’ moments. The only complaint I have is the ending. As I have said before, the ‘good always prevails’ point is getting really old to watch in horror movies. Not to mention the CGI was awful.
However, it doesn’t change the fact that I highly recommend this movie
