OK. I will be the first person to say anything about this piece of trash in cinema. I’m sorry PG-13 really. We can do better than that. Pulse is not scary nor should it be scary unless you are a 12 year old blond bimbo. The fact that studios are willing to allow these films to be dumbed down to get a bigger audience is appaling. Pulse is a perfect example to this. Look at the cast, You have Kirsten Bell form Veronica Mars, (Teen show, Christina Millian (used to be on disney channel) and Rick Gonzalez (coach carter amongst other teen films). Throw in Ian Somerhalder (Lost) and we have a cast for children. The only reasn why I saw this movie was because I got it for free. And even then I didn’t want it. It sits on my shelf and collects dust. I tried using it as a coaster but it wasn’t even good enough for that.
Fair remake, it
Seriously, this remake could have been so much better (we have the FX)!
this movie was not that bad? any horror movie watched loud enough can be scary! expecially ghost movies. i watched this around 11:00 when i was sick one night and this movie made me jump right out of my bed expecially when the thing came out the washer. this was a remake i think deserves more than it gets and i personally cant wait for 2 and 3.
This movie had scary parts….but it was stupid
it was alright
“Here’s another in a long, long line of predictable horror movies aimed at teens.
Like so many tired teen horror films before it, we get a semi-interesting premise that is never given the chance to take off the ground. We get a tried-and-beaten-to-the-ground formula that’s becoming nearly a parody of itself. “Pulse” has the laziest of horror film ambitions: an endless series of characters making slow, deliberate walks to some sort of random objective (in this movie, it is usually a computer screen) with the steadily rising score beneath their paces. And then, the orchestra crashes, the sound effects are blasted at dangerously high levels, and something (ghost, corpse, animal, landlady, Dick Cheney, etc.) bursts out at the character. Over and over and over. If the characters aren’t doing that, they are setting up an opportunity to do so. Again and again and again. Such payoffs are not payoffs. They are sudden, very loud noises that explode suddenly after rising, slightly-softer noise.
It’s tough to tell whether the director is a cookie-cutter hack emulating everything that’s been released in the last five years, or if he is just being ordered by the studio to emulate everything that’s been released in the last five years. Either way, “Pulse” is a dreary movie with nothing to say and little thrills to share. Mostly, it’s a take-off of “The Ring”…we get the always-overcast urban setting. A Naomi Watts look-alike as our lead. A lonely piano hits nearly the same keys as the above-mentioned film. And we get the quick cuts of single scenes. Instead of the mysterious video used in “The Ring”, we get equally mysterious images in computer screens. At times, it has the disorienting sensation of watching a film student’s class project titled “How To Make Creepy Images Like What Was Used In That Video In The Ring”.
Throughout the movie, characters go through the motions as if they’ve just been locked in a room watching a marathon of awful teen horror films. They laugh, they grieve, they act confused, they act scared, they act concerned, blah, blah, blah.
A plot summary for those interested: an internet virus is rapidly spreading across a college campus. Basically, ghostly images appear on your computer screen, and then at some point in the near future, a ghostly image will sneak up on you and take what appears to be your soul. Thus, you are left very sad to the point of being despondent. After that, you off yourself. Or you just spontaneously combust into ash. Either way.
The better looking of our leads manage to doge the virus, unlike literally the rest of civilization, despite the fact that they are more immersed in the virus than anyone else. Funny how that works. Whether or not they succeed in stopping this ghost virus (if you’re the screenwriter there’s no need to explain anything beyond “ghost virus” when all you’re writing are set-ups for characters to peek slowly into things) is for you to find out. If you choose to find out, God bless you. Please keep in mind that it is a real bitch getting your ticket refunded at the average multiplex.” –mikey7108088, imdb.com
I really like Kristen Bell, but I don’t understand why she would take this role. I read somewhere that the “killer cell phones” scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall was inspited by Kristen taking a role in this turd.
I liked Pulse… It wasn’t great but it was still decent and made for a brainless movie night with a friend. It’s another movie about the dead meeting today’s technology… It’s been done before but Pulse pulls it off better than some other variations ie the really crappy “One Missed Call”. I paid $5.99 for this title… I suggest you find it cheap like I did or rent it first.
Im sorry remakes i do like you alot but i dont know what i was thinking when i rented this i was like well i have nothing to do on a friday night and so the film starts with a guy entering library who is almost empty so heres one question if a ghost is following you and you have the choice to go with your friends or enter a creepy library with almost no one in it what would you choose? and by the way the movie had its scary parts and ghost apparitions but havent we seen this a million of times(the grudge, the ring, boogeyman etc…)the only scenes when i got scared were when the plane falled on the city and the ending so really if you dont have anything to do rent it and if you did liked it maybe its worth a buy(I SAID MAYBE)
Lame. Kristen Bell is too good for this shit.
I’m a big horror fan and this movie got my hopes up only to let them down. Usually the imdb.com rating wont stop me from expecting a good movie but unfortunately they’re right this time. The movie is about the world being taken over by a computer virus that allows the dead to come through the electronics and like “absorb” you into their world. The movie starts out alright and a little slow and is maybe watchable till just after half the movie then it just starts getting ridiculous. Things happen that are beyond even close to maybe possible. Watch movie if there’s nothing left to see.
boring, nothing too much going on in this film worth watching, that you havent seen done a million times better in other pictures. very disapointing
from all the crapppy j-horror remake i think this one is the better one but its still crappy
I saw it because of Kristen Vell. xD This movie was good, and I know people might hate me for the raiting I gave it. But who cares. It’s just an opinion.
One of those movies where if you are just tired enough, it can actually get scary… not to any extreme, but for a 14A movie (That’s Canadian for your American pg-13/R), it was pretty damned effective.
Yet another American remake of an Asian horror film. Unfortunately, this one presumably lost a lot in translation and wasn’t helped much by the crappy direction and uninteresting characters. I just couldn’t bring myself to give a damn about anyone in the film because we learn next to nothing about them.
I’ll admit that I never really got on the Japanese horror bandwagon, but the Japanese original sounds far more interesting. The themes of suicide and social isolation cry out to be explored, but ‘Pulse’ just glosses over them. It takes itself far too seriously, and doesn’t have the substance to back it up with.
I am also amazed that it is possible to make a film whose central plot device involves red gaffer tape, and whose main characters are all university students, and not make a single gaffer tape joke. You could have almost supported the entire movie on gaffer tape jokes alone. Or is the “gaffer tape fixes everything” thing just an Australian idiosyncrasy?
It’s an okay movie , Not scary at all , IT’s kind of boring / awesome movie .
BUT YOU ALL SHOULD KNOW THAT SOME REMAKES ARE AWESOME .
I WANT TO SEE ” NIGHT OF THE DEMONS” REMAKE OF THAT AWESOME 70S OR 80S MOVIE LOL
XOXO
BLOODYRED
Yet another terrible PG-13 American remake of an Asian horror film. As a general rule of thumb, I tend to avoid PG-13 horror. Not since the 80′s has a PG rated horror film been worth a damn. (Poltergeist & Gremlins come to mind)
I actually saw the sequel to this film before seeing the original, and I have never seen the Asian version, which I am sure is far better than this piece of crap. The sequel, while still a miserable film, is better than this. Not scary, very “high school friendly” film. A waste of my time. Certainly glad I never paid any money to see this piece of trash.
Pulse isn’t as horrible as people say but it’s nothing special either. Pulse was originally suppose to be R but the director made some cuts to warrant the PG-13 rating so that teeny boppers could see it. That was a big mistake. The acting is just so and so and never goes anywhere. The scares are pretty cheap and nothing special. Well, Pulse does have some good scares. While the scares aren’t like ‘The exorcist’ you can at least stomach them. Overall Pulse isn’t a terrible film, it’s just not a good one either.
I must say this is the best one of all the pulse movies 2,3 sucked totally….its not gory in the sense of blood but it has a few creepy moments…the story is much better in the first one.
Was alright.
this was laughable…wow what a shittank!
I find the whole concept to be quite novel (granted it was lifted from the Japanese original).
What a puddle of vomit. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a movie that, by all means, should’ve been creepy as hell and just felt so insanely bored. Seriously, with all the crazy imagery in this movie, how did they manage to make it so lame and generic? There’s absolutely nothing that saves this movie.
Well, it leads to a funny inside joke in Forgetting Sarah Marshall I guess. So thumbs up for being the butt end of a joke, Pulse. Good job.
amazing remake…the Japanese movie, but with better graphics!
Was priity good maybe could have been better.
This is a great movie. I wasn’t expecting much from it, but this is one hell of a solid remake. The movie has some stunning CGI, with wonderful creature animations, and some stunning visuals! Pulse is a remake of the Japanese version, but I felt this one was alot better. It didn’t bore me at all. The great plot, and the really well done scripted lines make this movie what it is, a stunning horror. But, the acting is a little crummy, some unusal actions made by the cast, that you just wouldn’t do, recycled idea’s and some contstant whiplash effects doesn’t make it to the top spot with me, but Pulse is a great thrilling horror movie, that won’t leave you dissapointed.
8/10
Pulse had some great ghostly images and some web cam clips that were really creepy, other than that this movie just did nothing for me. I get the idea and all but it just wasn’t that scary and most of the time I was waiting for something to happen just to be disapointed at what does.
Really good. Plenty scaryin my opinion. Good concept. I really liked it
I thought it was o.k. It has weak acting and some lame CGI effects, but there were a few tense moments. Average ghost film at best. Suprisingly, Wes Craven contributed to the screenplay.
even wonder what terrible ideas people come with these days…
I had higher hopes for this movie but its not completely horrible, worth a watch
kool movie:)
It was pretty good horror movie, and it was pretty scary, everytime when I see those ghosts pop up, they always scare me to death. This movie is cool.
An intense experience!
Keep away at all costs.
I think this movie gets a bad wrap for something that was never really promised. This movie never claimed to be anything like Saw or Hostel. It made a helluva lot more sense than the original and still maintained a pretty nice balance of pg13 rated horror effects. Plus, great actors doing a lot with what they were given. Kristen Bell and Ian Somerhalder were great together.
I had fun with it… but I’m also a sucker for apocalypse movies and I didn’t expect this movie to have that type of twist on it.
Worth a watch.
Hobo Approved(TM)
The atmosphere is pretty scary and the storyline could off been better, the acting was ok, the special effect were great but not alot used in this film (Which I thought it would have) and the wasn’t much gore to it, so why put on the DVD case that it’s the goriest film of the year only had 20% worth of gore in this movie. Overall the movie was dull, not really that scary and could of been better (From the premise that was shown), but I have to say really liked the dark texture of the filming of the movie.
“Pulse”, also known as “Kairo”, was a nice, creepy Japanese horror film that made its U.S. debut in 2005 and has since garnered somewhat of a cult following. Don’t get me wrong; it’s a good movie, and it got some solid praise, but the fans love it the most and boy do they know it. I also assume that they will be the first out of many to be pissed off when it comes to the film’s American remake, which is about as bad as every other recent J-horror remake. It has no soul, no scares, no atmosphere, with characters and dialogue written as if they were spewed right out of The Asylum; and I’ll assume you know who I’m talking about. This film is very, very bad.
So bad that, in fact, I could barely stand it. While I happily floated in the intelligent, suspenseful depths of the original “Pulse”, this remake is too stupid to really enjoy. It takes a good premise – the one from the original – but this time, it adds in characters as thin as paper, and scares that are nothing short of wit-less. The problem is that there are many horror movie clichés, and well-made genre pictures can work their way around them, but this is a great example of a movie that is not well-made, and therefore, it cannot achieve any of what it intends to.
But then again, I suppose it might entertain the stupid teenagers that think they understand that genre, and therefore go to see the film because they think it’s going to be loaded with insanely creepy CGI visuals, and they would be right. Now, the story involves, if you recall, a virus spread through electronic devices and the internet. It allows ghosts, ghouls, SPIRITS, if you may, access to the world of the living. It is there that they feed off our very souls, hoping to cast the entire Earth in their own dark shadow.
But we must have characters; oh yes, we must. Mattie (Kristen Bell) is just one, out of far too many (of these “characters”). She is a student, studying to be, if I remember, a…shrink? Yeah, I think that was it. We learn that Mattie’s boyfriend has killed himself for whatever reason, although that reason (oh yes, that reason) shall be revealed later in the film, and I would spoil it for you, but that would go “against the rules”. Anyways, regarding the character of the boyfriend, he is first seen wandering a dark library (horrible idea, but just in my opinion, you know) in the film’s opening scenes, and then, out of the blue (or out of the darkness, whichever you prefer), he is assaulted by a library-dwelling ghostie that pops out at him and yells “boo!”
It would appear that he was down with some sort of sickness, and this is precisely why he might have hung himself by a computer cable. However, as these movies go, this just wasn’t the END of these suicides; it becomes an every-day thing, and a threat to the characters and their mental states. This is where we’re supposed to find out that the ghosts have some sort of evil scheme planned out; and I already mentioned what it was.
The idea that the original “Pulse” brought to the cinematic screen was a good one. I admire how the Japanese value technology and intend their horror films, involving technologies, to be, should I say, cautionary tales? If not, then it’s just going to show how easily a ghost can find its way from its world to ours with just the click of a button. One of the film’s gimmicks is the quote that the ghosts send to the people via computer: Do you want to see a ghost? It’s a dumb gimmick, really, it is; but it got the attention of some, and hey; that works for the film’s benefit, doesn’t it?
The actors are emotionless. The tension is frightless. The story is senseless. What more can I tell you? “Pulse”, the remake, is dull, derivative, and stupid enough for one to despise every moment within it. It does, like most remakes, make me want to revisit the original; and that is something that I might do very soon. But for now, I’d see it; and I’d avoid this lame, repulsive, intellectually insulting piece of trash. Take my word for it; it’s that bad.
This movie had some flaws, but it was generally a good movie which I enjoyed.
