ALTERED (2006)
Directed by Eduardo Sanchez
Actors: No one you’ll know or remember
Who will love it: Sci Fi / Alien monster movie fans, anyone into straight to DVD horror, those who have respect for what horror directors can do on a non-commercial budget.
Who will hate it: Strickly gore hounds, the inpatient, serial killer or thriller fans, and of course, the moronic strickly commercial horror everyone else likes it so I like it simpletons.
I was pleasantly surprised when I picked this one up. The movie has some real scares and the effects are a lot more than you’d expect in the straight to DVD crowd. My intense childhood obsession with the X-Files was reintroduced to me in this film, and the acting was believable, considering it was about alien abduction in the country. Certainly as believable as the farmers from Montana I see on National Geographic confessing their unknown abduction and metallic sodomy stories. I didn’t hate the chick in it, which is rare for me in DVD horror. Overall, if you suck up your pride and patience like I do, and rent DVD horror hoping for something to renew your faith in the genre, this one will be your UFO holy communion to save your sins of the past twenty Judas’.
I enjoyed it; nuff said.
I can’t beleive this got a better review than The Cottage. Of course it’s not the same style of movie but this one was really boring to me and not scary at all. With the Cottage you get what you want not with this film.
Anyway it’s not bad…just ok….
this was a pretty good sci-fi movie with decent make up effects. wish they had a bigger budget to work with where we could have seen more aliens throughout the movie. definitely worth watching.
Excellent movie that kept me interested throughout. Great acting all around, very nice effects, and a hilarious tug of war scene with intestines.
Confusing, but well-crafted and worthy.
Decent
Not too shabby, I liked it. I wish they had a bigger budget, but worth a go!
Haxan films always make above average movies. Altered is no exception.
this movie was awesome. great ending. i hope they make a sequel.
Very Entertaining small budget film. This a well crafted little gem.
Rednecks vs Alien. Only one actual horror-gore scene in the first 50 mins, so some slow-goin’ for some fans to start this thing, although though there is some ok build-up. Picked up the pace in the end a bit, but still kind of a vague horror flick. A couple decent effects here and there, and actually entertaining for such a low-budget. Worth a view, but replay value isn’t all that great.
probably one of the most underrated horror movies in history. I loved it from beginning to the end. A thrilling and terrifying masterpiece

Very good sci-fi horror flick with some very creepy moments. Very good and under-rated film.
A great sci-fi horror film. If you like monster movies, you won’t be disappointed. The ending is spectacular – it left my jaw hanging. At times, the small budget for the film shows through, but this film shows tremendous talent from the director. I can’t believe this movie is relatively passed over.
…
Just bought this and I loved every minute of it. A very great alien film that I would recommend to anyone.
I really enjoyed this film, it’s hilariously cheesy and purely entertaining.
I liked that this flick gave me some live-action alien horror. Alien horror is rare these days so I was obviously happy to see it incorporated into this flick. The alien may come off a bit comical at times, but that only adds to the fun of this film which according to rumors was originally slated to be a horror/comedy, so it makes sense. The conflict in this film was not merely reserved for the alien usage but I will make a fair guess that the majority of conflict was character oriented. Yes that is right, CHARACTER conflict in an alien film. Personally, I found this cool and thought that most of the conflict was right on in quality and was quite convincing. Positive writing and a great performance from “hick guy” made this happen.
Sanchez’s direction is positive, and he gave us a surprising amount for a film that I did not least expect to be very gory. From the get-go this film comes off as a character driven spook-fest but in fact becomes a bit more slapstick as the film progresses. A little sneak hint: we get a tug of war scene between one of our protagonists and the alien, only thing is…instead of using a rope they are using the protagonist’s intestines! Yup, pretty sweet scene that I never saw coming.
My biggest complaint against this flick was the use of the female lead, which I found highly irrelevant and downright pathetic. For one, her dialogue was horrendous and although she provided “conflict”, she was horribly written and the only conflict she provided was in annoying me. To make matters worse, this was compounded by an equally bad acting performance that left me in agony every time she stenched the screen. Other than her character and subsequent acting performance I really have no major complaints with this film, just keep in mind that a flick with this film’s plot can only be “so” good.
Overall, this is a decent watch that comes from a director who had a big void to fill after the success of his premier film, The Blair Witch Project. While we never get much alien-oriented films these days, films like Alien Raiders and Slither would be better modern alien flicks to watch over this one.
Altered is one of those straight-to-dvd films that you actually might want to look out for. It’s really not bad. I have some gripes such as the creature could have been designed better and the story could’ve had more depth. But although it drags on at times, it’s quite a cool little alien feature. The creature is pretty cool for the most part and the acting is suprisingly solid. Don’t let the straight-to-dvd tag scare you off. It’s no where near great, but for what it is it’s worth a watch.
Score: 6.5
Saw this on Netflix last night and it was mildly enjoyable. The first 40 minutes were pretty good and after that it just started to bore me a bit. I kept waiting for them to show us the backstory of the abductions, but that never came. I probably wouldn’t suggest this film though due to the last half of the movie!
No, you aren’t drunk, this film really does start out that quickly, without giving you any idea of what is going on. At times, that strategy really works, and at other times, doesn’t work well. A clear departure from The Blair Witch Project, it was good to see Eduardo Sanchez attempting a different style of movie. More details here:

I’m not going to give it the lowest possible score ever, because I didn’t give the movie the MOST fair chance. I turned it off like, 20-30 minutes into the movie because I was SO BORED. It just kind of starts… you feel like the movie had already been going and the very beginning accidentally got cut. And then it just didn’t hold my interest. The acting was really subpar too
Bleh.
This shit was awesome! I wish they’d make a sequel…
Very underrated film.

Boring Crap
Interesting twist on alien encounters.

The Ultimate Movie Review! – http://tss5078.blogspot.com – @tss5078 – If Seinfeld is the show about nothing, Altered is the movie about nothing. These four friends were abducted by aliens fifteen years earlier, so these geniuses decide to get revenge by kidnapping one of the aliens. They accomplish their goal, but once they do, they don’t know what to do with it and lock it in the garage. After that it becomes a slasher film where nothing significant really happens. Honestly, they kidnapped this thing and then don’t know what to do with it, so then what’s the point? To make things worse, we never see the abduction or find out what exactly happened to them up there. It’s just an extremely dark and confusing hunting scene, which believe it or not features a harpoon, and then there is nothing else. As for the acting it is just as inconsistent as the story! One minute their going crazy, trying to kill each other and the next they’re crying about old times, it’s ridiculous! James Gammon is the only name in this thing, playing the sheriff in one of his last roles. The guys are so intimidated by the sheriff and when we finally see him, we find out he’s this little eighty year old guy, are you kidding me? This movie is a complete disaster and an utter waste of time. Being that it’s from the writer/director of The Blair Witch Project, I was expecting something as groundbreaking as that was, unfortunately, Altered isn’t it and there is a good reason why you’ve probably never heard of it.
I expected a lot more from this one. Maybe because I was trying to compare it to Blair Witch, and it was a completely different vibe. It had its moments, and some of the elements were comparable to the tension in Blair Witch, but it just seemed like it was missing something.
