This is not a horror film. But its a violent crime drama. I wont give too much away but this was academy award nomination type movie and it doesnt hurt that we get to see maria bello without clothes again…
I didnt like it. I knew everything that happened like 10 years before it happened. Not good.
Amazing
Liked the movie but I’m not sure why it was reviewed on this site.
This was a bad ass movie. Not sure if it was much of a horror movie but non the less it ruled!
It was decent, wouldn’t say it’s one of the greatest dramas. Neither would I buy it, but was a great movie that is good only the first time. Rent it.
Very well directed and wonderfully acted, a very interesting, slow paced drama thriller that isnt really a horror movie, but a great movie overall.

There’s an intense and hot sex scene in the middle that makes Maria Bello one of my new favorite people. I saw the movie as a sneak preview and was shocked by the amount of gore and detailed soundtrack / effects. The beginning is brutal, and I can watch the coffee shop robbery over and over again. The plot was surprising, and seemed to be written for a twisted Italian audience like me.
OH HELL YEAH !!!!!! GO VIGGO !!!!!!! This is a great movie…….
yet another point in why david cronenberg is one of the best directors the silver screen has given us. im not a big viggo mortensen fan, but he gets the job done well in this one. ed harris is phenomenal, along with william hurt, in an oscar winning preformance. all around great movie making in front of and behind the camera. one of my personal favoritesl
Brilliant movie showcasing the diverse talent that is Mr David Cronenberg. Unfortunately I saw this in a theater packed with teenage idiots who didn’t seem to ‘get it’ and laughed through all the intense violent parts, thus ruining the overall effect. Brilliant plot, direction , gore effects and acting thanks to Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello. A must see !!!
Wasn’t bad, but is this horror? Just because it’s Cronenberg, adn people die in it doesn’t mean it’s horror.
Not a horror movie by any means but this is a badass thriller. Very original.
not a horror movie but it was good.
Such a good movie. brilliant acting, and story , yes not a horror movie but a great thriller that everyone should watch some day
Otherwise known as overhyped crapfest of 2005. Bland, confusing and ridiculously and laughably over the top.
I think this would have worked more as a straight-drama, but it was too much over the top for that. It had some interesting Cronenberg themes, though. I liked the way how the violence spread throughout the family and deeply affected them. You see the wife, she is both repulsed and turned on, and the kid goes to school and beats up on a bully.
Though it became too silly that he was able to take all those guys on at once, like a comic book character (I realise this is based off a graphic novel).
A better movie that explores similar themes is Straw Dogs, or even Cronenberg’s own Crash.
One badass movie.
One of the most powerful films I’ve ever seen.
Score: 9.5
Well… It was alright, it wasn’t amazing as everyone says it is. It’s one of those films that you watch, you think, “meh. OK.” and forget about it the next day. It was OK and thats all it was. We couldn’t really relate to his history because we didn’t know what his history was. A bit of a mish mash of a plot really.
Not really a horror film but its alright kills pretty good other then that its so so.
History of violence is so normal and yet so powerfully epic, its look on violence is such a perfect mesh of the very human and the ripping and tearing of the violence that is bleeding into the family, as soon as the first shot goes off the violence starts destroying the families “normalcy”, ending with Viggo Mortensen’s utter epitome of violence, and the family’s boring dinner time. excellent and brutal at parts, the fight scens as always are perfect, not as excellent as Eastern Promises but pretty damn close.
All around great movie! Thrill seekers, this one has it all! Violence, sex, gratuitous nudity. The action, script, acting, direction; everything perfecto.
One of, if not the best film from Cronberg. A History of Violence is a impeccably acted, razor sharp and powerful thriller/drama. While it’s big reveals aren’t that surprising; this movie still hits you with the force of a sledgehammer. A must see.
what the fuck!? this is one of those movies where the big time “star” director tells everybody that its going to be great idea if he makes this movie, and whammo!, it totally sucks ass! talk about a total dissapoitment from about 30 mins. into the movie until the very shitty ending. this movie lacked anything that could make a movie good. the acting was deplorable at best, and i’m a big fan of Viggo. the story/plot were absolutely telling in every scene, i was literally saying to myself what was going to happen next, and just like bad sitcom it happened. i just cannot tell people to watch this movie! so i won’t!
A good movie but not Cronenberg’s best…
Not really a horror but none the less a great film.
Great film! Viggo kicks ass!
I wouldn’t even say this is a horror film, but it’s very good. The oral sex scene will be remembered as one of the movies most over the top moments that sets the stage of the unexpected to come later.
This is not a horror movie!!! What does this movie here?.
Anyway, it’s a very good movie, powerful, with great performances and well directed. Besides some really awesome sex scenes completely changed my impression of Maria Bello, now she is one of my favorites.
I love this movie. One of my favorites.
As long as you don’t go into this expecting a horror move, you’ll love it. Awesome film!
As said before me, this is not a horror movie by any means… but it IS violent as hell and awesome.
Don’t even care if it’s not horror, it’s amazing!
Probably one of the most thought provoking and stimulating films I have seen in the past 10 years. Not scary by any means, but it gets a strong message across and for me A History of Violence will always be in my Top 5.
What the hell is this doing with 5 skulls? It’s not a very good movie.
Is it a horror movie? Yes sadly, but only on the technical count as for anyone who watches Japanese Bloodsploitation films will realize severe levels of violence automatically become horror. As for the film itself brilliant up to a point. The acting is outstanding as well as the story itself, the pacing falls down slightly in patches, but thankfully the actors keep the audience enthralled during these slower moments the back-end staff is amazing the editing the cinematography and the rest. This film should be a ten, however like most films with a severe level of violence the writing is the problem and in this films case it is the writing in the last act that kills it. The dialogue is wonderful so as the direction in this part, however the actual plot points and story progression that falls apart and the ending seems more forced, then anything else. Which given the fact that the adaptation ends around this point it seems more like Cronenberg wanted to push his own thoughts into a story that did not need them.
