This year at TIFF 2010 I not only had the honor of attending the premiere screening of Insidious (review), a film I consider to be one of the most exhilarating and cinematic horror films in ages, but I also got the opportunity to chat with its filmmakers, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. Even before I saw their latest, I was already excited to be chatting it up with the guys behind the original Saw, the iconic start of the torture porn movement. Writer-director Kevin Smith was recently a guest on Ralph Garman’s Hollywood Babble-On show where he revealed that John Goodman has signed on to star in Smith’s Red State. Goodman has most recently been seen on HBO’s “Treme” and also had an awesome role in James Wan’s Death Sentence. I’ll always remember him from Joe Dante’s’ Matinee and the ever-so=awesome Big Lebowski. Goodman joins the previously announced Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Dermot Mulroney, Michael Angarano, Steven Root, and Michael Parks in the horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America. After a departure from the horror genre with 2007′s Death Sentence, director James Wan has re-teamed with Saw and Dead Silence partner Leigh Wannell for the supernatural horror/thriller Insidious, premiering next month in the Toronto Film Festival’s “Midnight Madness” category. Back in May B-D’s Chris Eggertsen had the opportunity to visit the set in downtown Los Angeles to check out some of the filming and talk to star Patrick Wilson, production designer Aaron Sims, and special makeup effects artist Justin Raleigh. Bloody Disgusting learned that Rose Byrne (Knowing, 28 Weeks Later, The Dead Girl, Sunshine), Patrick Wilson (Hard Candy, Watchmen, The Ledge) and Barbara Hershey (Black Swan, Riding the Bullet) have all been cast in James Wan’s latest horror entry, Insidious, which is currently lensing under the title “The Astral” here in Los Angeles. Re-teaming Wan with Saw co-writer Leigh Whannell, the pic follows a young family makes the terrifying discovery that the body of their comatose boy has become a magnet for malevolent entities, while his consciousness lies trapped in the dark and insidious realm known as The Further. Shooting begins Monday in Pittsburgh for Lionsgate’s remake of My Bloody Valentine 3-D, which will be helmed by Patrick Lussier. Bloody-Disgusting was tipped off that Kerr Smith (Final Destination) and Edi Gathegi (Twilight, Death Sentence) will join the previously announced Jamie King, Jensen Ackles and Tom Atkins. Ten years ago the sleepy town of Harmony, Montana was the setting for a series of grisly murders on Valentine’s night. Now, it seems the killer is back… or is he? On his Myspace blog, James Wan graciously opened up to the fans, allowing them to ask a variety of questions, and he answered quite a few, in detail, instead of simply saying ‘yes’, ‘no’, or ‘I don’t remember.’ like some other directors do in similar situations. One fan asked if we can expect to see Billy (the Saw puppet) in Death Sentence, and James confirmed that the film will indeed have another brief appearance, á la Dead Silence. Says Wan, “He’s my ‘Hitchcock cameo’ instead of myself. I’m not gonna spoil the fun by telling you guys where he is… you have to spot him for yourself!” I know I will be on the lookout. Ahhh the mind of the great James Wan… not only has he created Lionsgate’s centerpiece franchise Saw (alongside pal Leigh Whannell), but he also has his second horror film Silence being prepped for release over at Universal. After knocking two out of the park, and helping out with Saw II and the story for Saw III, he’s hard at working prepping his next film, Death Sentence, over at 20th Century Fox.
