Absolutely amazing sequel which is surprisingly almost as great as Part 1. Extremely tense, creepy and terrifying with a shit load of fantastic jump-scares (2 or 3 really made me jump outta my seat), gallons of gore, wonderful cinematography and again a brilliant cast. I just love it!

Just not good. Started out decent enough and I was wondering why this went direct to DVD… then they got to the cave, or I guess I should call in the brightly lit, wide-open set that they were prentending was a cave. Now I know they didn’t have the budget of the first one (which was not high)… but the entire reason the original worked was because you believed these women were trapped in a real, claustrophobic cave. In fact, I think the first half of the first movie is where the money is at… Once the creatures start attacking, it gets incredibly repetitive and boring.
Plus, this one, as most sequels feel the need to do, tries to rehash the key scenes from the first one, including the night vision camera… (Yes, I know its a nod to the first movie. I don’t need to see them doing it again as if it’s new)
Overall… not the worst Direct to DVD sequel, but far from anything remotely well done. I would put Cabin Fever 2 over this any day.

(and what was with the fake red blood! You can buy more realistic looking fake blood at Wal-Mart than this movie had!)

4 years after the original movie, The Descent 2 is finally here and is an exceptional sequel. Though it does not surpass the original it is an excellent continuation of the original. If you are a true fan like I am then please don’t listen to any of the negative criticism about this movie, because this movie does not disappoint. Starting off with Sarah making it out of the cave she once again forced to return to the horror thanks to the ignorance of the town sheriff. There are some exceptional characters in this film like Deputy Rios and Cath but none live up to the returning characters of Sarah and Juno! I also enjoyed the little homage to the girls from the original movie: Beth, Holly, Becca, and Sam thats does them justice while also adding a little bonus footage. The movie is still as dark, intense, and scary like the original, but be prepared for some immense sadness and shock towards the end of the film, I’m still reeling in anger a bit about the ending but have high hopes that there will be some justice in the third film. The Descent 2 is one of the best horror movies out there and also one of the best sequels and it does the original justice as well as the characters. It’s a return to hell. Enjoy.

This movie was a cool surprise for me, being a huge fan of the original, I was expecting a big pile of shit. But instead I got a pretty damn good sequel. What I loved about it is it stayed true to the original in most aspects and people you thought were long gone in the original come outta nowhere, which I won’t spoil for you. The monsters are still creepy and gross. The acting is not as good as the original but passable. The only thing that I think the movie could have done without is that dumbass ending, its like they didn’t even try in the last 5 minutes of the movie, really disappointing. Overall a worthy sequel. Watch it!

As with some of the other reviewers, I too was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. I had prepared for the worst, and of course it’s not the original, but if you look at this film as a direct continuation of the first, it doesn’t disappoint. In fact, you too might be surprised. The characters are not as developed as they were in the first, but we also meet most of these new folks in mid-search of the girls. This is not a stand alone film. You really need to see the first Descent to buy into this story. The subtle and brilliant detail of Juno’s father being a Senator lends itself to the believability of why Sarah would get dragged down below so quickly in the first place. The rest of the movie just falls into place, and yes it sometimes stumbles, but true Descent fans will enjoy this ride and Sarah’s journey back down into the dark. The ending? Well, if there were another sequel where do the writers go from here? I feel they’ve boxed themselves into a corner and now must delve into a bit of history to explain the “walkers” origins. Sometimes the unexplained is more believable and scarier. Overall an enjoyable continuation that maybe should have at least seen a limited theatrical release here in the states.

HOLY HELL! A superb sequel! You can tell they knew the first one was a brilliant film and didnt want to screw this up because it was right there with the first! This really could have just been a three hour horror flick the way the sequel was and it really deserves just the same respect.Like Aliens and Scream 2, to me this borders being NEARLY as great as the original.AND SHIT, I have not jumped that much in I couldn’t tell you when! VERY AFFECTIVE!DON’T MISS IT!

Better than most direct to DVD movies. Thought it was decent enough, but just a different version of the first. Like that they were able to get the original women back, which I believe made this better than most sequels made for DVD. Sorry Rambo Lunchbox, but I would not put Cabin Fever 2 over this movie any day. That movie had potential, but came up way flat.

The Descent 2 is awful. i watched it twice about a month and a half ago (i wanted to be fair and make sure my disdain wasn’t just a knee jerk reaction) and i tried to re-watch it 2 days ago and i couldn’t make it past the 1st 20 (as soon as they get down to the cave it’s unwatchable). the movie is almost entirely jump scares. after the 1st 10 jump scares i was over it. so a fat cop is going to go down to the caves and we’re to believe that he can fit into the same small spaces that the more fit and people (who can barely fit through said spaces) go through? the STRAWBERRY/ORANGE colored blood was another eyesore. did no one on set say “you know, the color of the blood is SOOOO off that we should redo it”??? the sheriff, when told how dangerous it is FOR ALL OF THEM to carry a gun down in the caves, brings it anyways and ends up shooting it causing a cave in. then what was so absurd was he (later) HANDCUFFS HIMSELF TO SARAH (to keep her near) after they all know it’s NOT Sarah who’s the kill but it’s the crawlers!!!!!! they have to cross this “dangerous” rock bridge and he is told (by a returning from part 1 character…who really didn’t have much impact in her return) that ONLY 1 PERSON AT A TIME to cross the bridge…so what does he insist upon? staying handcuffed to Sarah, treating her like a criminal, even though by then it’s well known that Sarah was a VICTIM……and don’t even get me started on the “surprised/twist” ending…..FUCKING STUPID. i’m a HUGE fan of the 1st movie and i was SO excited for part 2 but it’s just abysmal. i watched this and SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD around the same-ish time and let me tell you, it was NOT a good horror day. i give THE DESCENT 2 a 2 out of 10. just needed to stress that the movie is MOSTLY one cheap JUMP SCARE after the other. for anyone who really hates jump scare/stingers and no tension whatsoever….this one isn’t for you.

The fact that people are giving this movie high ratings is proof to how complacent horror audiences have become. The first movie was SO DAMN GOOD(!), but I cannot even begin to describe how bad this sequel’s screenplay is! The bitch who took the spike in the leg at the end of the first movie is back and jumping around the place like a ninja?!? Sorry, but in such a filthy environment, she would be dying of infection and not able to walk from the pain AT ALL, let alone the minor limping she had going on. The sheriff and all his stupidity? Uh, yeah…someone like that would REALLY be a sheriff? Not likely. The whole premise of forcing a victim back into such an environment is so far fetched it’s insane. If she was suspected of any foul play, she would have been kept in custody, NOT shoved down a cave! LOL…when is a suspect EVER dragged back to the scene of a crime??? Especially when they don’t even know if a crime had been committed yet?!? And what about her mental state? The doctors actually released her!?! What magic land of retardation was this supposed to be taking place in?
We’re expected to suspend disbelief in films like this already…but why should we be expected to believe every bit of bad writing they throw at us just because it’s a work of fiction? How are monster movies supposed to be scary if none of the human elements are even close to being realistic? Oh well, at least the gore was good and the crapping cave creature made me laugh.

The original Descent is one of the greatest horror movies of the ’00s – fresh, exciting, surprising, with a finale that was absolutely horrifying. There was absolutely no reason to shoot a sequel aside from the prospect of separating the original’s fans from their money.

Unfortunately, that was reason enough for the producers of The Descent: Part 2.

I could even overlook that if the sequel was good, scary fun. No luck on that front. The Descent: Part 2 relies on the characters making unfathomably stupid decisions to advance the plot. Seriously, Forrest Gump would have a better chance of survival than these Mensa rejects. The first hour is agonizingly dull and when director Jon Harris finally cuts loose with the gore and monster action, it’s not only too little, too late, it’s laughably cheesy to boot. The Descent: Part 2 has a couple of good performances from Anna Skellern as a rescue worker and Shauna Macdonald, back from the original, but even with two good actresses and a nifty surprise late in the game, the sheer awfulness of the movie is too much to overcome.

The Descent: Part 2 begins right where the original left off – a device that’s becoming de riguer for horror sequels. Sarah (Macdonald) runs screaming from the Appalachain woods and is promptly taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, a rescue operation has been working for days to locate the rest of the missing cavers with no luck, so Sarah represents their best chance to find them. Sheriff Vaines (Gavin O’Herlihy) goes beyond seeing if Sarah’s lucid enough to answer questions, though; he yanks her from her hospital bed and drags her back into the caves with the rescue team. Color me wacky, but I tend to think that dragging a physically and emotionally traumatized woman out of a hospital against her will is a little south of legal. Might just be me, though.

Now we’ve got six people on the killing floor and that’s enough victims to string out a horror show to 90 minutes. Despite the team leader’s stern warnings, Vaines insists on bringing his gun into the caves. When the horror of being back in the caves overcomes Sarah, she freaks and runs, and naturally Vaines fires on her, triggering a rock fall. Really, if you’re going spelunking, listen to the experienced folks who know a whole hell of a lot more than you do. You’re less likely to be eaten by monsters in the dark that way.

As dumb as the set-up is, it splits up the party so that the crawlers, the sub-human monsters who terrorized Sarah and her friends in the original, can chow down on fresh meat. While The Descent: Part 2 has been pretty crappy up to now, this is the tipping point where everything goes to Hell in a handbasket. The Descent’s characters were strong, smart, and resourceful. They were likable and the sense that they had a slight chance of escaping their predicament created genuine suspense. The Descent: Part 2 is an assembly line of slaughter, no different than any bargain basement slasher movie, except that this one’s set in caves with awful set design. Seriously, it’s almost as bad as the old Star Trek episodes where they’d toss up a backdrop and fling a couple of paper mache boulders onto the set, trying to pass it off as a strange new world.

The Descent: Part 2 isn’t as awful as most low-budget direct-to-DVD horror flicks, but being better than Sorority Massacre 72 doesn’t necessarily make you good, either. The only thing it has in common with the original is the setting and star. All the thrills, chills, and excitement of the first movie are conspicuous by their absence. Skellern’s good as one of the rescue workers and Macdonald’s fun to watch once she gets to do more than twitch and tremble, but most of the time, I just felt sorry for them, wishing they had gotten a better gig. If you want a really frightening movie about nasty things in caves, watch The Descent. It’s great. You’ll love it. The Descent: Part 2 seems perversely calculated to disappoint fans and newcomers alike, and you’ll weep over the dollar you spent at the video kiosk to rent it.

This movie sucked. It was a complete rehash of the first, with a cliche ending to all endings. The gore was really fake, the blood like it was strawberry sauce. The acting was what you expect from all of these movies. At least this time you saw the creatures better. But Stick to the first one. And forget all about this junk.

A continuation from the original. I had lower expectations going into it, but after it was said and done, the sequel stood up well against the original. There was ways it could have been royally screwed up, but it stuck to the same idea as the first, just not as magical and surprising. Worth checking out if you liked the original.

For those who enjoyed Neil Marshall’s “The Descent” (2005) because of its masterful delivery and devastating finale, this sequel will come as a huge disappointment. In a baffling move, US distributor Lionsgate had already sabotaged the American version of the original film by changing its ending, so we shouldn’t be surprised that they opted to fully elaborate their superficial, commercialized vision of the film into one of the most unnecessary sequels in the history of cinema.

What is surprising is that the otherwise impeccable Marshall actually took credit for it as an executive producer, although he did distance himself from the movie later on (read his BD interview on “Centurion”).

As a rule, any sequel will be judged by its relationship to the original, and in this case the contrast between the two reveals the embarrassing ineptitude of first-time director Jon Harris, who worked as an editor on Marshall’s masterpiece. Two major stylistic differences:

In “The Descent”, Marshall made exemplary use of the dark – a difficult condition for any filmmaker. Harris lazily lights every nook and cranny of the sets, and then has his actors pretend they can’t see a thing. This leads to ridiculous-looking scenes that impede the suspension of disbelief.

Secondly, to make up for the lack of suspense in the ridiculous, predictable script, Harris resorts to the use of excessive gore – a beloved substitute for creativity in the horror milieu.

These are, however, flaws of an obvious, visual nature. The roots of this sequel’s failure lie as much in its conception as in its execution: the movie in itself has no defendable right to exist.

Neither Lionsgate nor Harris seem to comprehend what made “The Descent” not just a great horror movie, but a gripping, brutal tale that impassioned genre fans as well as the general movie public: as was pointed out in the AV Club’s recent “New Cult Canon” review, “The Descent” is not your typical struggle for redemption, wherein the characters have to face inners demons (personified in the cave-dwelling “crawlers”) in order to emerge victorious.

On the contrary, Marshall’s script was intended to depict its protagonist’s downfall into madness and despair, set off by the loss of her husband and child. The hallucinations in the early hospital scenes show she’s already begun to lose it a year before she even sets foot in the cave. Exacerbated by the horrific subterranean events, Sarah’s psyche is finally reduced to a nihilistic state from which she can no longer escape. Every scene in the film is a movement towards this final goal.

This is why I speak of a sabotaged US version, where Sarah manages to escape her predicament instead of merely imagining it, as is revealed in the UK version. If one accepts the original ending of the UK version as the only logical conclusion to Sarah’s story, the existence of this sequel is in itself a paradox, a product of greed and nothing more.

Not nearly as good as the first one, but fun to watch and at least it brings real closure to the story. The crawlers looked awesome, but I actually thought there could have been more blood/gore and less “implied” kills. The acting wasn’t very good either. Overall, its a good film but don’t expect to get the same feeling that you did from the first one.

I didnt care for this sequel like i did the first one and the main reason is because it shouldnt exist if you go by the original ending. but we have the sequel so here we go. i did like how close it was to the first in the sense that it picks up immediately after the first one ended (the american ending) and finding a character still alive down in the caves from the first one and having the same main character return. it definately felt like a continuation of the first one which is what a sequel should be. but it was kind of just a retread because they sent a bunch of people down there again (food) and the crawlers are down there waiting and we essentially get the first one all over again. part 2 doesnt really add anything to the story overall and it fails to capture the sense of dread and claustraphobia that the first one had. the crawlers look stupid in this one compared to the first one, they looked alot better and more of an original design compared to the lazy design of this sequel. the acting was pretty good and kept me into it, but i didnt like the ending because hasnt this girl been through enough? really? and i didnt like the idea of Ed, the guy in charge of the place or the caves? knowing whats down there and helping to feed them. MUCH scarier in the first when supposedly no one knew what was down there. all in all, its enjoyable to watch and check out if you liked the first one, as the ties are endless (which is a good thing and should be what a true sequel is) but i just cant get out of my head the idea of why did we need this? hopefully this is the last one and as a whole if you view them as one movie its a pretty good damn movie but in two seperate parts, this one is definately lacking compared the the first.

The descent: part 2 is a very “hit or miss” film. Unfortunetly, it has many more misses then hits. Despite some cool scenes you can’t take it seriously like the first film. Also, the ending will dissapoint fans of the 1st film. My suggestion to horror fans is to forget this film was made.

  32. Avatar of Gus
Posted By Gus on May 4, 2010 @ 12:40 pm

This movie plays like a typical sequel: It has a distinct “made for the money” feel to it. It keeps you on the edge of your seat a bit, sure. But it also stretches the limits of credulity a too far and doesn’t redeem itself from the fact that it really should never have existed in the first place.

The movie was also 100% predictable. Every scare could be seen a mile away. The ONLY thing I didn’t entirely see coming was the ending, and even that twist (if that’s what you’d call it) wasn’t anything at all that I’d call “worth it”. The gratuitous violence was ham-fisted and felt like it was an obvious attempt at distraction from the so-so nature of the film.

Still, I recommend it for fans of the first. If you haven’t seen the first, don’t watch this one before you do. The Descent stands in my mind as one of the best horror films I’ve ever seen. This one…well, it’ll be just another one from the genre. Nothing to write home about.

Hey – if you saw and liked The Descent and appreciated it on any level, you kind of HAVE to watch the sequel. Its not as tight as the first, with some story flaws and predictable, perhaps even cheap twists, but its the continuation, explains what happened after she got out of the cave, and goes back in ALIENS style with a bit more prep but to no avail, of course. The ending left a lot to be desired, but all in all, it was a good sequel. Just not great. But definitely better than your average followup (like CABIN FEVER 2). Dont go into it as a critic and Descent 2 keeps the story alive pretty cool over all.

I had no hopes for this movie. I just rented it for the hell of it just to see if maybe it had some cool scenes or something. So that being said, The Descent Part 2 had one or two cool scenes but the movie all together was a total snore fest. It had nothing going for it like the first one. Unlike the first one, this wasn’t scary at all. The gore effects were kinda effective at times but All in All, The Descent Part 2 was nothing like the first one and I do not recommend this movie at all. Watch the first one. This film is bloody good! Can’t see why they didn’t bring it to the big screen in America. It’s got pretty much the same feel as the original, from the claustrophobia(especially the underwater cave-diving) to the creepy creatures. Poor girls, missed the original cast but the new cast is good too. Just an all out creepy good time and can’t wait to see another one(if they do make another one). I loved this film. I do rate the first one a bit higher but overall for the 2nd film in the series I thought they did a great job. You got the same feeling of claustrophobia that you did from the first one and the thrill of not knowing what was around the corner or what would pop up from god knows where. I wish that they would have released this one on the big screen first so as to get the full effect of it all. The only thing I did not like was the very end which I’m sure is setting us up for a sequel, but it just didn’t seem to go with the flow of the film. Other than that though it’s well worth buying or renting.

I actually have to say that this was a really good sequel. I heard some people say it wasn’t as claustrauphobic as the first. Well I don’t know what movie you were watching. There were definitely parts that had me cringing just because i couldn’t imagine being so compressed like that without feeaking out. There was one surprise that I was not expecting and it was really a good one. But unfortunately as good as this movie was the ending absolutely killed it. The ending made the previous scene seem absolutely for nothing and took away what was a big deal and ruined the end of the movie. I probably would have rated this higher but the ending really did suck.

This shit was actually pretty good. It definitely showed a lot more than the first one and that hurt it to an extent but was also a lot of fun. The blood seems so bright red that it almost glows and it works in the dark (well, it actually seems a bit more bright than the first) cave. I also wonder what film the people who claim this lacks the claustraphobic traits of the last one, there was a part or two that had me feeling kind of uneasy. I enjoyed the ending but saw it coming from the beginning ;) I will dock this for the lack of logic and the pure stupidity of that old man sheriff, fuck that guy.

Loved the first one but this one fell way short. Bad acting, didn’t capture the claustrophobia of the first one, caves were too lighted, cave creatures weren’t scary at all here and the ending was bloody awful. Character actions weren’t believable at all…disappointing all-round.

I thought that this was a pretty decent follow-up, especially considering that it was a straight-to-DVD film.
    However….
    !!!!!SPOILER!!!!!
I really don’t get what that sheriff dude had anything to with the story. It really didn’t make much sense, and to be honest, I don’t really want an explanation in the third film. They should have totally omitted that part.
    !!!!!!! END SPOILER!!!!!!!!

Overall, not too shabby. Acting wasn’t that bad, and there are some NICE surprises.

A disappointing and unnecessary sequel to one of the best horror films in ages.

The first one was almost perfect, but this one fell extremely short. The “twists” were nothing but a big cliche and the ending left a terrible taste in my mouth (and not for the right reasons). I was more disappointed that the creators and writers of the original Descent were responsible for this one as well. *sigh*

Does it surpass its predecessor? No unfortunately and it’s probably a result of the original director not helming it this time around, so this is pretty much not the Aliens of sequels. Shauna MacDonald returns as the soul survivor of the first one and wakes up in the hospital confused and as a result a rescue crew and police force her to go with them to the dark depths of hell once again to search for her friends. I think Shauna MacDonald is strong here once again but there is no more layers to her character anymore and the supporting cast were ok but not as strong as the first cast with an exception of the woman cop and another female character that gets killed off way too soon. The gore is nasty than ever here and the atmosphere and fight of the fittest the same but the most important factors that made the original a hit which are suspense, fear and claustrophobia are missing here and they didn’t add anything to improve upon that which was very disappointing and a shame not saying there wasn’t any jump but cheap scares because there is several of them but nothing truely terrifying. There is nothing effective in the story anymore and no surprises and is pretty much a rehash of the first one but this time it wasn’t effective and I just don’t see a strong effort here just a cash cow and the ending made it all pointless in the end, what a waste. Overall I guess if you try to recreate a solid horror movie but at the same time do a sequel isn’t always as great but as far as creature features go it wasn’t half bad and is entertaining compared to most but it’s just not a good sequel. Rent but not a must see.

it was alright I guess. The whole juno vs sarah fight was really corny.. blood looked like paint.. some of the creatures were good but the film left all aspects of claustrophobia behind.. weak story.. weak everything.. first was amazing but this was total blah

The first Descent is one of the best horror films of the last decade. The second offering is nowhere near that standing, but it also wasn’t a disappointment by any means. It is so rare that a second offering matches the excellence of a kick ass first–a viewer just can’t have the same expectations because it will just end in let down most every time. This one is actually a bit more gorey and disgusting than the first, but on the minus side it is also somewhat less engaging because of the been-there-done-that effect–not much can be done about that. Still, the creatures are cool and menacing as hell, and the thrills of the dark cave action is great fun to watch. Entertaining horror.

I’m a big fan of the first film and Neil Marshall so I wasn’t sure what to expect. This movie was really good and deserved a theater release as opposed to straight to DVD. It lacked the uniqueness and character development in the first and many of the scenes were by the numbers where a horror purist could predict some of the upcoming scares, but the action, pace, and gore were all solid. Definitely worth seeing. Can’t see where they could go with another, but this complimented the original film very well.

Not nearly as good as the first movie, but still quite enjoyable. The plot is a bit thrown together but no matter what it was going to be difficult to come up with a storyline to get them back in the cave.

I really dont know why i put myself through watching this film, after being dissapointed with the first one. It is far more disgusting than the first one though which is always good. I think what irritates me the most is that i really want to know more about these cave dwellers than the story gives. The acting was quite poor which did’nt help also. If you have a problem with tight spaces dont watch this film, the one good thing it has going for it that it manages to be believable enough to make you feel claustrophobic and uncomfortable so at least you pay attention.

piece o crap this film was. The deaths were almost shot for shot from the first film. No real originalilty here. Im a huge film buff and rarely ever turn a film off before its done but sadly i had to turn this one off, it lost my intrest in merely 20 minutes. The only thing that was slightly scary about this film was the claustraphobia, thats about it. Watch the first film, now theres a decent horror flick.

so over all about and 8 or 9 1/2 for me:) for good story line and good deaths and i gotta say bad ending it left me wondering what gonna happened hope fully they have a 3rd one:)

The first Descent is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. As sequels go this one has it all. What made the first one so good was that you never lost track of any of the characters and they all had some sort of importance. It wasn’t just some “it” girl and all the other girls were just characters, they all had some sort of deep meaning. The first one had this sense of dread and claustrophobic. All of this can be found in the sequel. The creatures and all the old cast mates are back in some sort of way. If you are a fan of the first or just like horror movies you should check this one out.

I don’t really have too much to say about this movie. I didn’t like the idea of a second one when I heard about it, because I’m used to the UK ending of the first film, I wasn’t sure where the second one was going to go. Well it doesn’t link in too well from the first movie. From then on the police and the cave rescue people are so annoying you want them to die, and the fact that they drag her back in there you’re like WTF! Then it gets good, links in with the last film very well, love it. But at the end…well you want the rest of them to get out, and they don’t, stupid sacraficing herself to save the other bird, even though she like killed her mate in the first one to save herself…and then the ending…is awful. Loved it right up till the end, then I was like…..AWW MAN! FAIL! Worth a watch if you liked the first one though I would say.

I’ll start this review off by saying, The Descent: Part 2 is a sequel that never, and I mean NEVER should have been made. With that being said, it was actually one of the better sequels you will see. The ending took the film down a notch, yes. But either way it was still an above average sequel that fans of the first movie, like myself, will have a blast watching.

Given that I expect most sequels to be a poor cousin to the original, this was actually reasonably solid. Whilst lacking a sense of empathy for the characters as was the case in the first film, this manages to pull off a nice “rollercoaster” horror film. Plenty of scares, some genuinely gross moments and a nice little bizarre twist at the end. The first delivered all of the above but the story was engagingly delivered and it was more involving on a dramatic level.

I’ll be damned! This is even better than the first Descent! Well-made, and original horror films that reach mainstream audiences are a rare beast. Modern horror movies are pretty dumbed down compared to…well, compared to what I grew up with.
You don’t really NEED to see the first Descent to appreciate it’s sequel, but it helps a bit. My highest recommendation. If you have claustrophobia, as I do, you will find both Descent films frightening.

Kind of a “by the numbers” sequel lacking any real imagination, and the ending is a total cheat. We realize then that the director has no real sympathy or emotional investment in his characters. Suffice it to say a group of people go back in the cavern, and the “crawlers” are still there, prowling and eating. Other than the novelty of showing one of the crawlers taking a dump, there’s really nothing new here.

This movie sucked, and not in the good way. The acting in this movie was embarrassing at points, and the way the film ties into the first makes no sense assuming the original ending has been viewed. The gore is aplenty which is nice, but the new characters have ridiculous dialog, make stupid decisions, and cannot act their way out of a paper bag. I was cheering the deaths of the newbies because their obnoxious presence was a chore to tolerate. The ending was a huge curveball that was a big mistake, and the film lost its overall tone of helplessness and the fear of the dark was missing as well… considering in the first film, the dark was embraced as an enemy as well as the creatures, and in this film the caverns were so littered with studio lights it looked like a made for tv syfy special more than it did a successor to one of the most brilliant creature films of today’s age.

It’s a well made movie in certain ways, but as with the original it’s an insult to fans of the actresses who were set up to be strong and brave young women but are never given a fair fighting chance even though they try and try. The ending is another in a line of nihilistic modern-day horror films where the protagonist is doomed to fail from the word: go. Big slap in the face to fans who are accustomed to rooting for the good guy, which was probably intentional. I’ll pass.
