Very entertaining movie. Malone hopefully directs more like this as he’s a very talented filmmaker with a great visual eye.
Borrows ideas from A Nightmare on Elm Street, among others but adds its own unique, sometimes bizarre twist on them. The acting is decent to good across the board with Combs and Wilson (as the character suffering from the titular disorder) the highlights. The way Wilson goes from sweet and innocent to diabolical is magnificent. Malone reportedly made this outside the studio system after dissatisfaction with the interference he experienced while making FearDotCom. Based on the results, I hope he gets the chance for more creative freedom in the future because this is among his best work.
Bizarre but quite decent and atmospheric mystery/horror-thriller from William Malone (IMO a strange director who never seems to get it fully right).
There are many things that are just adorable about ‘Parasomnia’: the story, the visually stunning dream/dreamworld sequences, all the other great-looking symbolic stuff, the fantastic soundtrack and some brilliant gore. Sadly the plot is often quite predictable, the script is a mess, the acting is mediocre and the love-story-part is pretty unlikely and annoying.
You got to give it up to anyone trying anything original these days. This was a decent flick with an interesting story. Some of the imagery was very reminiscent of both early Hellraiser & Phantasm films. The main protagonist was also quite threatening and scary. Some pretty good SFX too with KNB at the helm. Was that a cameo from John Landis?
Not as good as I was hoping it to be but still worth a rental.
It starts tediously like a romantic comedy of sorts, but if you’re a little patient, there’s a decent payoff once the rubber meets the road. Malone shines best in the surrealistic scenes with his weird, delicate balance of the disturbing and the beautiful. This movie would have benefited from more of them and less talky reality.
“Look into my eyes..”, and then look away because this is not an entertaining movie. Bad acting, plot all over the place, and lots of iffy dialogue make for a mostly unenjoyable and sometimes confusing view. The Leeloo act by Sleeping Beauty when she finally awoke was irritating as well–thank goodness it didn’t last the duration (Milla Jovavich you ain’t). Parasomnia has a hard time putting it’s acts together, and the few scenes of violence just don’t seem to fit, either. Also was not into the dream sequences that looked straight out of a 80′s MTV video. Just not a good vibe for me from start to finish–too much of a mess.
I really wanted to like this eerie flick but sadly it’s pace and storyline were a real lackluster.
