One of the saddest movies since IRREVERSIBLE. amazing and really tough to watch. IMO, better than THE GIRL NEXT DOOR.
This film was not only deeply disturbing in nature, but was actually shot and produced well enough to drive that feeling deep into you. Certain parts were very hard to sit through, simply because of the combination of unnerving brutality and the surrealism involved in a suburban and her children torturing another young girl. Ellen Page and Katherine Keener are both wonderful as always, and I would suggest this film only to those with strong stomachs, and strongly suggest it to those interested in true-crime shockers, as it is by far one of the best of that genre that I have seen in some time now.
This was a good movie even though it was hard to believe somebody let this happen in their basement. Worth Watching
this movie makes my stomach turn and it was hard for me not to cry. I loved it though and thought it should have been in the theaters. too bad it wasn’t.
I saw this on showtime and it was the most devestating, shocking, disturbing movie dealing with child abuse I’ve seen. The acting was top notch and it was nicely filmed. Catherine Keener gives one of her darkest performance to date, and Ellen Page gives an emotionally challenging performance as abused Sylvia Likens. I read some information about this case on the internet and what they showed on film doesn’t even come close to what they really did to her in that basement and it just made me sick to my stomach and sad. This is an important movie to see and I don’t know why they didn’t release this movie to theaters. Recommended!
Depressing and evil true story. The mother was the catalyst for the vicious treatment of the girl, but it was the beatings and torture by the children and their friends that was the most bothersome for me. Why nobody would help this girl is beyond reason–sad for Sylvia, and sad for the mindstate of mankind. Keener and Page depicted their parts very well. At times I would imagine it would be hard to play roles like these, one’s based on horrid true events. A well done movie on a sad subject.
Catherine Keener’s performance as Gertrude Baniszewski was absolutely haunting. She portrayed this unstable, vicious housewife to perfection, and the fact a person like this really existed just makes her performance all the more chilling for me. This movie was an absolutely great [if you can call it that] depiction of a true crime. A movie impossible not to get emotionally entangled in.
Ok everyone i’ve got a question for you?
I’ve yet to see this film, or The Girl Next Door, i am a Jack Ketchum fan, but i hear this film is better. Is there anyone who can give an unbiased assumption between the two?
anything with ellen page is an amazing movie
Absolutely phenomenal movie. It is difficult to watch and yes, it will make you feel sick at points but it keeps Sylvia’s story alive. Movies that bring awareness like this one; deserve to be watched and remembered.
an interesting story, just not done very well at all. Page was ok, but i thought that everybody else was terrible in their roles. it just seemed like a made for tv movie to me. not near graphic enough to actually move you or really get your attention. i don’t recommend this to anyone because it’s just flat out bad. not worth watching.
I have to say this movie annoyed me. It is based on a true story, but they really candy coated the facts. They made Gertie look almost repentant for her role in murdering Sylvia when in real life she blamed the kids until the day she finally died. Paula was never nice to Sylvia in fact she treated he worse than anyone other than Coy. The movie got the pain across but never really told the whole truth. The real story is so much more sad and disturbing. if you can believe it….
Excellent movie, great acting, yet hard to watch, a MUST SEE
