I’ve been slowly reviewing Horror Fest 2, and to be honest, this is the best I’ve seen so far. The directing style is phenomenal, and while it does take quite a few cues from Danny Boyle, I don’t believe that makes it cliche. God knows there are too many slasher movies or blockbuster hits who just hit record without any thought to style. The acting was solid and character development good; really it was what sold the movie for me. There were a few confusing parts, but they by no means detracted from the movie. And I think the rat sounds were a little overdone. Still, it was a new take on an old genre, and I thought that it was a good effort.

I dont care what anybody says I thought this was a very cool movie. I liked the gritty and urban feeling to it and it was very original with the disease. You dont usually see a movie where people turn into rats and eat people. But ya I thought it was a very good independent horror movie. I will say though the part were the guy uses the lighter and the can of spray..wow…that was some shitty special effects same with the explosion. I mean how could you not afford to do that lol.

Can I get my money back, please? What the fuck was this shit? “Rat creatures”? Are you fucking kidding me? Apparently the folks over at fearnet really fucked up this time. Seriously, can I get a refund?

This movie is not bad at all.
I think it’s crazy that Frontiere(s) gets so much love and this film is hated. This movie was more interesting from start to finish and actually had a good social undertone throughout. I wouldn’t say it was great, but it is definitely not awful.

Well at least they didn’t try to be funny like half the other crap out trying to be a horror and comedy movie. This isn’t a bad movie. Worth watching

What a great take on the “zombie” genre, i am so full of zombie films i could poo them out for breakfast lunch and dinner 7 times a day, i am worn out and uninterested in zombie films anymore, but it doesnt mean ill stop watching them, they are just killing this genre very much, however there has been a ounce of hope in films like this Mulberry Street which is an absolutle horror masterpiece that alot of people will find boring and uninteresting, i loved it, one of the best after dark films and overall i was very satisfied and surprised at how much i liked this simple, horror movie, good acting, interesting characters, with a splash of drama as it needed sprinkled here and there. definatly great

We never seen rat zombie people in any movie. The first part of the movie was kind of slow. But when the rat zombies start to appear everything is good. The movie should of had more blood. I thought it was better than the other horrorfest movies. See it

This is the best twist on the Zombie genre…period!! A great set up. Quirky characters and an eerie location make this one of the most orignal Zombie movies since 28 Days later. It’s fun and frightening. Rats brought the black death hundreds of years ago and here the film-makers have twisted this historical fact by turning the people into undead rat-people. Suspense and humour make this all the more enjoyable. Leave your brain at the door and enjoy Mulberry Street for the great Zombie movie it is.

Pretty good movie. I like the main character from the start. Nice horror and suspense. I’ve never been to New York City but I’ve heard stories about those pesky ratones…being a Texan the first thing I thought of was “Shit man, I’d blow that rat man’s head clean off with my gun!” Worth the watch.

The idea for Mulberry st is far better than the execution. The idea of a virus morphing people into rat like zombies in the alley ways and cramp apartment buildings in New York is a truly creepy one. This is coming from someone whose spent a lot of time in the city and it feels real authentic. But of all the stuff it gets right an intriguing main charachter, good creature design and a scary plot. But it also drags on a little and the pacing is majorly off and the script has a few odd plot holes. Overall how ever the film is definitely worth a watch.

It’s a travesty that such a vibrant, passionate and searing little movie got written off or ignored by so many. Considering how badly we’re crying out for horror movies with intelligence and integrity this gem should have broken out. Great work from all concerned on both sides of the camera. Hands down the best indie horror in years.

This movie stuck out in Horrorfest like a sore thumb..in the best way possible! The acting and characters were some of the best I’ve seen in this genre. Ever. The music set moods that made you feel every scene as a whole. The storyline was great, the cinematography was at it’s best. Nicely paced, and a really good open ending, left up to the viewer’s interpretation. Excellent. I hope to see more from Jim Mickle because I adore his film-making.

I liked this movie it was cool, it had some in your face nasty scary shit, and some piss-ass funny shit. When that guy is hooking up with that girl and then she turns into a rat and fucks him up, that was funny. But the best was when I think it was that girl who was riding the bike, and then she got attacked by that fat ass black chick with the cornrows, and whe was like eeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! mad high pitched, Fuckin funny dude. Good movie overall. I liked the city feel too.

Kinda nifty. Not great, but has its moments. The rat people look goofy. They probably should have toned down the make up a bit. The ending is too obtuse though.

may be the best ADH film I’ve seen – Unique twist on zombies – scope enhanced through use of radio and television broadcasts – I cared about the main character and his friend – Tragic ending – definitely surprised this was from AfterDardFilms.

A quick complaint: rats are not predators. They are scavengers. This is essentially a zombie movie, but disguised as a killer rat people movie. And they’re not even the good zombies even; they’re the super fast hyperactive kind a la the Day of Dead remake (minus the ceiling crawling).

Overall it was okay. Just nothing to write home about. The ending doesn’t save it either.

Who ever said that New Yorkers were rude or not funny, I sure as hell didn’t. I want to say a few things about this movie I loved it. I absolutely loved this movie, it was one of the best apocalyptic movies since 28 Week Later, and furthermore, it was more of an isolated incident than a major epidemic. I was beautifully done, the acting was beyond superb, very tense and horrorfic and funny. This movie had the look and feel of something much more mesmerizing and sedated than just your typical outbreak story, it had family values, emotional battles, REAL looking people rather than beautiful young teens and some very sad and unexpected moments. This movie would probably be the best Horror Fest movie I have seen. It brought me back to the day when apocalypse movies were abundant and new. Even for a very restricted budget, as the film displays, this film was dynamite.

First off, the acting was equivalent to 28 Days and Weeks, the remake of Dawn of the Dead and Land of the Dead. Unlike its predecessors, Mulberry Street is an isolated outbreak strictly in the Manhattan and New York region. This outbreak was not cause by a virus, or at least confirmed that it was virus, or a zombie outbreak or even a gas, it was simply caused by underground sewer rats. When bitten, people turn into “rat people.” They become deformed, grow long front teeth and pointy ears and eat other people. What made this movie scary was that they weren’t zombies or enraged people but mutations of the human body running around and viciously attack people. They jump out of nowhere, they puke blood, eat other people and violent manner that all of this is happening. It’s scary, when you see these people faces and the way they act before they turn into rat people. Something about this particular apocalypse movie was different from Days, Weeks, Dawn of Dead or Land of Dead, it was pretty scary and very well done for a low budgeter. One of the scarier moments was when the building super, who got bit, started crawling up the inside of the walls and ceilings.

The characters in this movie were not you typical drunken, sex-craved, beautiful teens, but were you typical lower class, medium income New York tenants. That’s what I also loved about this movie was it had real people who acted like real people in such situations and with outstanding performances by Nick Damici, Kim Blair, Ron Brice, Antone Pagan and Lou Torres. Another great element that drives this movie is the emotional feel and the chemistry between those characters. A father, along with his flamboyant friend wait for the arrival of his long seen daughter, and just the respect and love they had for each was powerful. The relationship that one of the older tenants has with a bedridden old man who breaths through an oxygen tank is hysterically powerful and the love between that father and a barmaid, whom he has trouble confronting. All of these aspects and more made this film emotionally driven and powerful. There are points were it’s almost sad and a good amount of laughs.

Another great and unexpected aspect of this film was the humor. The old guy with the breather is hysterical even the most hectic and horrible situations. There was plenty of humor in this film that lightened the mood including the bar’s owner who found a great way to defend himself from the rat people, with none other than a frying pan. Great humor portrayed by one of the more flamboyant tenants who also found a great way for defense involving a lighter and an aerosol can. The humor was abundant and I enjoyed this ingredient.

The visual of the film was hand-held, like a camcorder and when the action heightened it got shakier and more intense. Not quite as motion sickness as Bourne Ultimatum was, but the camera did try to stabilize and keep a hand-held style going. A great attempt and it worked. I enjoyed the camera-work the natural lighting inside the dimly lit apartment and the darkened red lights of the outside streets.

Overall, this movie had great scares, some very emotional moments, sad moments, hysterical moments and a great horror film that would fit greatly in the apocalypse line up of films. If you haven’t seen this, I would strongly recommend it and give it a chance. A lot of people found it stupid but it was very well done, unlike some b-movies were the director doesn’t push his actors and actresses to go above and beyond. For this movie, there is no need for Arsenic, just a chance.

Okay, there were a lot of great things about this movie. I loved the cast, especially Casey with her plain, but beautiful, look. There were some dumb character traits, like Clutch and his boxing, or the too gay guy. Zombies would’ve been great, but they are rat people. I’ll mention it again: RAT PEOPLE. I’m sorry, but this is just stupid. We’re talking about rat roses, hairy ears, buck teeth and full blown rat heads. It is just absurd. I just can’t take this movie seriously. This is pretty much what happens when you ask an eight-years old to come up with an idea. The budget was obviously tight as we never see wide shots, so the movie is very tightly wound. There are probably a total of 30 people in this movie (more like 60 I’m sure), which prevents the viewer from getting an idea that is infection is widespread.

The thing is that the movie is coherent. It makes sense. It is sucks. I don’t hate it, but I was looking at the time in hopes for it to end, because I had seen enough by minute 40.

This is definitely one of those movies that you can pass up. It doesn’t offer anything that is spectacularly bad or good. This movie is just massively underwhelming.

i loved it, although i dont agree with the whole zombie thing because there clearly not zombies, yet the dvd box mentioned the word zombie like 550 times. i thought it was really good great movie very claustrophic and just a great disaster movie, in a day and age when were exposed to disaster end of the world movies such as “day of the dead (remake)”, this is deffinetely in a league of its own compared to that, oh and i loved the fact they didnt go into detail about what caused the virus, (flight of the living deads main problem)

Interesting and atmospheric but also pretty weird take on the epidemic/zombie-theme. The ramshackle Mulberry neighborhood looks great, the acting is decent and the zombie scenes are all wonderfully violent and fast-paced. Sadly there’s not much tension going on, it’s often quite boring and the acting is just mediocre.

This film had a lot of potential that it sadly failed to deliver on. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still entertaining to watch maybe once or twice, but it had the potential to be a keeper.

Mulberry Street was one of the 8 films featured during Afterdark Horrorfest 2007, the yearly festival that features one ore two hidden gems, and typically 4 or 5 stinkers.

Mulberry Street actually fits right in with films like Quarantine, 28 Days Later and the rash of Zombie films that have made their way to theaters in the last five years.

It essentially deals with a cast of New Yorkers who are living in a quaint building that is in the process of being bought out and re-developed. Amid the ordinary drama of this diverse cast of every-men and women is a rash of violence by these rat-like creatures. In true lycanthrope fashion, people bitten by these creatures begin to become one. I am not quite certain if they are zombies, or the seldom mentioned were-rats that occasionally make their way in Dungeons and Dragons games.

What works in Mulberry Street is the genuine humanity that we see exhibited in the main characters, from the retired boxer, his disfigured war veteran daughter, the gay black neighbor or the old men a few floors up. All of these characters seem real and realized in a way that is seldom done in horror films. To take a small budget and invest time and attention to letting the audience get to know your characters is no easy task. The performances were solid enough as well.

I really like the way that film was shot, from the grainy picture, to the magnificent use of the New York City backdrop. A city like New York City is simply the ultimate set piece for this type of movie.

The creatures in this film are decent enough and vicious enough to make an impression. The camera work seems to be shot in such a way as to not focus on the creatures themselves too much. They are in the film plenty, but through creative shooting their presence is more heard and felt than seen. The violence and gore is also decent, kind of middle of the road in terms of being violent, but not excessively so.

I feel like the main area where this movie failed was in the way that the story resolved itself. There was a bit of forced drama thrown in, a few plot twists and then some questionable ending frames where you are not really certain which, if any of the main characters actually survive.

I imagine if Jim Mickle had received a higher budget to shoot this film, that the extra time and attention could have been used to really resolve the action a more clear and satisfying fashion.

Still, I was pleasantly surprised by the film and would recommend at least a rental to decide for yourselves.

this film started off pretty decent, had a good atmosphere and the virus storyline was almost realistic…and thats were it should have ended, insted the people turned into these weird rat type creatures. that ruines it for me. should have stuck with the realistic route.

One of the best Horror films of 2007 and it’s not only the best Horror film of 2007 but it is also one of the best After Dark Horrorfest films in After Dark Horrorfest 2007. Mulberry Street is a really good virus movie I heard a lot of people say that this movie is a zombie film but in my opinion this movie is not only a zombie film but more of a virus movie. This movie has a really nice plot about the outbreak in New York that represents a rat problem. Usually the film has a really nice plot and it was pretty good and it was in a good pace. To say this the center of the film’s plot mainly focus on the characters of the film and it not only focus on the characters of the film but it mainly focus more on the rats and the viral outbreak in New York City because this movie is done in a different technique compared to other zombie movies. This movie is quickly fast paced from start to finish. What’s great about Mulberry Street is that the film since it has a good plot the film is also full of tight suspense, scares and tension with thrills as well and mainly the film has lots of suspenceful scenes the scene where the superintendent gets bitten by a rat that scene was really tight on the suspense and tension even the scene where the girl turns into a rat like zombie creature and starts attacking all the people in the bar that is also a suspenceful scene in the movie and I think it looks good in the movie so far and it worked a lot in the movie as well. This movie also has lots of great sound effects and the sound efefcts are really effective and well used in the film the sound of the rat zombie people seriously makes the film look good and it is perfect for the movie so far and I personally like that idea so far. What I also like about Mulberry Street is that the film also has a really silent, eerie and creepy soundtrack and the soundtrack in the movie was used in a different style in this film and that idea worked in this film and from what I can tell I like how the soundtrack was used in the film it was really well used and the idea on how the soundtrack was used was that in the film when the streets of New York City are empty the soundtrack is really silent and eerie as well then when someone hears a sound of the rat like zombie creatures it turns creepy and when they start to appear the soundtrack changes and it turns scary and it gets scarier when more of the rat like zombie creatures starts to come out everywhere and it really fits well in the movie and that technique seriously worked in the movie so far and I personally like it as well. What I also like about this movie is that the film is full of great special, gore and blood effects and the special effects in this movie looks really good even the make up effects look good as well plus the blood and gore effects used in the film is really neat, gritty, graphic and disgusting as well. All of the blood and gore effects really worked in the film and there are lots of scenes where the blood and gore effects were used in the film and the scene where the rat like zombie creature eats the flesh of a dead person that scene was really graphic and disgusting so far even the scene where the other girl who is not infected gets bitten and the rat like zombie person instantly proceeds to rip her throat with one bite that scene was really nasty and icky as well and the gore in those scenes were really neat and gritty so far and it looks good in the movie. What I also like about this film is that the whole movie is atmospheric from start to finish the entire film is atmospheric and it really fits well in the movie along with the scares and tension and it makes the movie look good so far. The acting is great from a decent casts the performance of the casts is good so far all of the actors and actresses did a good job with their performances in the movie so far. Director Jim Mickle did a good job with his directing with this movie so far the only problem was that he would have added another explanation in the film on where did the virus come from and how the rats got the virus that was the only problem with Mulberry Street the film itself doesn’t have enough explanation on how and where the rats got the virus but at least Jim Mickle did a good job with his directing with this movie so far and I’m hoping to see more of his future work for the Horror genre in the future. Overall Mulberry Street gets a 10/10

Official Score: 2 / 5
