This movie was pretty shitty. I mean I just dont get British comedy and I think its dumb. The only good part about this movie is the end and thats it.

This film is a very enjoyable comedy horror (in that order) reminiscent of Dog Soldiers without quite scaling the same heights.
The core acting quartet of Serkis,Ellison,O’Donnell and Shearsmith) provide strong performances with likeable characters who the audience finds themselves caring for, a novelty in recent times.
The comedy elements that run throughout the film are chuckle-worthy without unfortunately providing any real standout moments but are all perfectly timed so that there is no conflict with the horror that appears somewhat late in the day. Indeed it is managed somewhat better than the not dissimilar Severance although the horror when it comes is nowhere near so gruesome or extreme.
Paul Andrew Williams displays some very able direction with a well paced narrative and abstinence from the wooden jump-scares that have become the norm in the “glossy” studio US horrors of recent times.
The film runs to only 92 mins in length but this is perfect for the material involved. Although quite short it avoids the sense of “Is that it?” that lessened such recent releases such as Vacancy, and still manages to end on an unexpected and reasonably original note.
To sum up this short review The Cottage is a worthwhile light comedy horror which can be enjoyed more with multiple viewings. It is a film that can be shown to horror fans and non-fans alike and should get a positive feedback from both.

I just watched it. It’s funny, gory but not to much, the acting is also pretty good and it’s really really fun….
    I loved it…Great film.

Good acting, good gore, good cast. This movie has everything going for it seemingly… except the annoying accent from the blonde girl. I’m not a huge fan of it… but that didn’t affect my views on the movie at all, and I loved it!

Typical British humor. This movie was only gory for the last 30 minutes. Fast foward for the gore. Rent on dollar day. What a letdown

This movie I thought was advertised incorrectly. It’s more british Crime/Comedy than it is horror.

Aside from the fact that I got something WAY different than I expected, It turned out to be a decent mindless flick.

I’d recommend it, if anything, for the fact that Jennifer Ellison is hot as balls.

This is a very dark comedy that gradually becomes a horror movie. It starts out as a kidnapping caper that goes terribly wrong. I found this portion of the movie quite entertaining and, at times, very funny. As the movie progresses it dispenses with most of the comedy and focuses the last 30 minutes or so on the horror. Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith are wonderful in their respective roles of brothers with nothing in common. I recommend this one to anyone who loves British comedy/horror movies.

JENNIFER ELLISON……….JENNIFER ELLISON…………JENNIFER ELLISON oh and JENNIFER ELLISON . To start did i mention JENNIFER ELLSON , sorry its hard to think of anything els when it comes to the cottage , sorry its just JENNIFER ELLISON ……….
O.K. appart from Jennifer Ellison it stars Andy Serkis ( king kong , lord of the rings and oliver ) and Reece Shearsmith from the legr of gentlemen which if you havent seen the first thing you need to do is buy all three seeis of and sit back and blow your balls off .
So two brothers , who get along like toothache kidnap Trcey ( JENNIFER ELLISON ) the daughter of Davids gangland boss in an attemt to make some quick money . But this is where they make there first mistake in involeing Tracey’s brother who is a bemused fuck-up on a grand sale , there second mistake is to hide out in a remote cottage that is situated on the land of a maniacle farmer who has a hatred for trespassers .
The brothers make the call to Tracey’s dad but her brother being the idiot he is is followed by two triads who are in the employment of Tracey’s farther . However , Tracey ( JENNIFER ELLISON ) escapes into the woods with Pete as her hostage and they make there way to the nerby farm , which is the home to are wrong turn , leather face style farmer . Triads are killed and a foray of violence and comedy unfold in a comic battle to escape and survive the horror of the heads in the barn killer .There’s a cool ending and a small cameo by Doug Bradley ( pin head ) < plenty of giggles and if you can ge over the colourof Jennifers language an amazeing script .
I’v read some reveiw’s on the cottage and alot of people are putting it up there with shaun of the dead and to some extent it’s as good but the cottage is alot darker, shaun of the dead is very user friendly and almost a family style film ( kinda ) , im not saying it’s shit because it’s one of the best brit horror films out there but there is a vast difference between the two .
The cottage is funny to the end but it’s a dark humour the violence is full on and no punches are pulled , it’s a great break from the norm even though it pulls stereo types fro other films at the same time it makes thoes bits it’s own , you do get the feeling you’v been here befor but what a ride …….oh and JENNIFER ELLISON .

In terms of entertainment, this film definatly packs that punch, as in terms of a horrific original villian, look elsewhere because it looks as if they snagged jason vorhees right off friday the 13th part II.
but overall I found the movie entertaining, and it kept my interest to see what happenned next, i liked that the film began more as a heist film than a horror film, but the villian, unfortunatly killed the movie for me.

I thought this movie was damn near perfect in every way. if you like your horror mixed with a little slapstick then you should dig this.

Glad to say English horror just keeps getting better and better. If you like your horror with nice gore scenes and a bit of a comedy value as well, oh and not forgetting the heroine has a great pair of assets then catch this one, very entertaining.

This is one cool movie. It reels you in with the comedy and you get invested in the characters. Then it kicks you in the gut with a supergory final act when all hell breaks loose. Andy Serkis is fantastic. What a fun movie.

Loved it! Great mesh of British humor (which I’m not that big a fan of, but it’s pretty damned funny in this one) and great gore. Even the story is pretty cool for being what it is. Great ending!!!

They should have called this “The Cottage Cheese”
Humor fell short. I had a problem with the acting in this in general, nothing i can put my finger in. I mean on.

Funny and brutal! What an awesome movie! The kills are great, completely inspired, especially Jennifer Ellison’s death. Just take a shovel between the lips and then get half of your head cut off! Awesome! One problem, though. The ending, it makes you say “WHAT?!” The killer seriously cares about his family, so he keeps them locked in the basement so they have to act as cannibals. What sense does that make! The ending would be a lot better if they just left Peter in the dark of the basement to starve. Either way, the movie is awesome and I definitely recommend it for those who like Shaun of the Dead. Go see it!

    4/10 for Limited Appeal

I bought this movie simply because of Doug Bradley. His 15 seconds of screen time were the best in the movie. This isn’t to say that the movie is terrible, but it is almost boring. The movie exists in a limbo where it wants to be funny, but doesn’t want to stray from horror and it wants to be horror but doesn’t want to stray from comedy. All you are left with is a smudge that is smeared between the two roads. It really just isn’t funny, but I’m not complaining about that. It just wasn’t entertaining in any fashion. I’m really disappointed with this movie.

You’ll never watch it again and you’ll never find yourself recommending it or telling your co-workers about it. You can pass this movie up and you won’t miss a thing.

To me, if a movie isn’t going to be good enough to talk about, at least make it bad enough for me to bitch about. Sadly, this movie doesn;t raise anything in me.

    4/10 for Limited Appeal

I put this right up there with Severance and Botched for funny Horror comedy’s not as superior as the ones I mentioned but it’s a good view and there’s an awesome shovel decapitation!

It was promising but not as clever as it should of been and it just wasn’t that witty. Creepy looking killer though. Don’t waste your time on this one.

A fun enough little slasher. Nothing that will blow the average horror critic away, but it’s got some great moments and Andy Serkis is a blast to watch. Hell, I even found myself rooting for Jennifer Ellison’s character. This is also the first time I’ve ever heard her speak and, my god, what a voice!

The killer doesn’t even come into play until about the last 20 minutes and he, or his backstory, is far from a surprise but the kills are brutal and the gore effects are more than up to snuff.

The ending was half letdown half “that was awesome!” just because of the sheer abruptness of it. I wouldn’t mind a sequel but I’m not dying for it.

A great horror-comedy, loaded with gore. A bit short on the laughs and a bit dragged out in the beginning, but overall a good film.

Ehh. I usually enjoy horror comedies but I wasnt feeling this one. It was very boring to me and only occasionally funny. By the time the killer even showed up I was ready to turn it off and move on. Its not the worst movie or anything but I cant really reccomend it to anyone for any reason. Pass.

The Cottage is a movie you will either love or hate.. I Loved it..
I’m a die hard slasher fan and of course I love blood and gore, but this movie was so funny and entertaining it didn’t bother me that the killing didn’t start untill the last half of the movie I still loved it.
It builds great character development and the main characters two bumbling brothers”Steven and David” are hilarious in the fact that everything they do goes wrong because they are just born losers.
Their kidnap plot goes wrong in every possible way
except they do get the kipnapee “Tracey” to the holding spot..a cottage that is “let’s say in the wrong neighborhood”..
when Tracey escapes after delivering much physical abuse to the weaker and more meek of the brothers she runs to a nearby farm, that’s when that slasher element kicks in..
A terribly disfigured farmer is on the loose and he not in a good mood..although the comedy elements go on through the entire film, the gore is very well done and plentiful.
It’s hilarious to watch Tracey go up against the killer farmer with her tough as nails attitude.
I think this will become a classic.
    I highly reccomend it.

An ok slasher that tries to be funny but really isn’t–didn’t find laughs in the many bouts of annoying screaming (from a male character, nonetheless). It is watchable mostly for Jennifer Ellison (“Tracey”) who totally steals the show from everyone, including the run-of-the-mill big man in a throwback Jason V. get-up. There is a little bit of gore that is interesting, but again, nothing all that memorable. Really tried to get into the “Lock-Stock”, “Snatch”, or “Layer Cake” kinda vibe in the outset, but the attempted wit fell flat after a short amount of time, and then it eventually went straight to a familiar slasher storyline. If it weren’t for Ellison’s fun and smartmouth character this would have been kinda boring. Worth a rental, but don’t expect much more than average fare.

cant believe i’ve only just seen this film! came out 2008 best brit horror film i can think off of its kind…… great actors good script and director made me laugh and wince. i’d compare it to ‘hatchet’ but its not trying to be like any other films just reminds me off obvious slasher films. great deaths good humour how good was jen ellisons death better than paris hiltons in ‘house of wax’?! i was hoping she’d get it from the start the scouse bitch.
i’m going to put it in the collection with merit points hope they make a sequel.

Official Score: 3.5 / 5
