[Blu-ray Review Round-Up] ‘The Hole,’ ‘American Horror Story: Season One,’ ‘The Game,’and ‘Pet Sematary’

October officially starts today, and we’ve got a ton of Blu-ray and DVD horror releases coming our way. With a lot of them being films (or TV shows) a healthy majority of us have already seen, I decided to round-up a bunch of them in this giant article and put more focus on the disc specs rather than the films (and TV show) themselves. Check after the jump for my thoughts on The Hole (10/02/12), American Horror Story: Season One (09/25/12), The Game (09/25/12), and Pet Sematary (10/02/12) Blu-rays. Let us know what you guys think of this new home video review format too. Do you prefer full-length film and disc specs reviews for Blu-rays and DVDs? Or do you just want to know whether the disc content (audio, video, special features) makes the release worth buying? READ MORE

Review: Monocyte #1 and #2

Monocyte is a densely gothic work of science fiction that will grab you by the throat and refuse to let you go until the last page. For a book that seems to intentionally disregard all major tropes in mainstream comics today, it is without a doubt a book that will find a large number of fans, and deservingly so. After issue #2 it is certain that IDW has another hit horror book on their hands, one that brings something completely novel to the table, one that works adamantly to re-imagine the horror genre. It’s bleak, dark, absurd, complex, poetic, and it remains steadfast in its use of elevated language and beautiful artwork. The creative team certainly has a wonderfully dark vision, and to let us into their minds is an absolute treasure that you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Darkness Falls in 5 Clips From Joe Dante’s The Hole’

One of my favorite horror films of 2009 was Joe Dante’s The Hole 3D, which I reviewed out of TIFF. Unfortunately, the children’s horror film has yet to find a U.S. distributor. But for those of you dying to see it, you’ll be able to pick it up on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK. In fact, inside you’ll find a whopping 5 clips and 2 featurettes that’ll give you a good idea what the film’s all about. Too bad you won’t get to see it in awesome RealD 3D. (more…) READ MORE

Best & Worst of ’10: DAVID HARLEY’S TOP 10 OF 2010

Out of all the lists I’ve done for the site, this year’s best-of compilation was easily the most difficult to write. When I first starting thinking about this way back in August, I was hard pressed to come up with five films that I liked, let alone ones that were strictly horror. But by the time we crossed over into December and all was said and done, my tally sheet was much harder to sort through but for a different reason: I had to narrow a list of twenty-two films down to ten, with an extra three as honorable mentions. Even after I had run them through my normal list of criteria of what I think makes a film great, my count-down order changed numerous times, and only one question helped me determine the iteration you’re looking at now: if I had the option to march right back into the theatre after watching any of these to see it again, which ones would I watch first? Immediately, the fight between a killer tire and ballerina had a winner, and my decision as to whether or not a powerful film was worth including if it made me depressed for days afterwards became clear. First Clip from Joe Dante’s ‘The Hole 3D’ Teases the Terror!

Last September I was one of the first people to see Joe Dante’s The Hole 3D (read the review), an incredibly fun and scary children’s horror tale in the vein of Dante classics like Gremlins. Unfortunately, the film has yet to see a release here in the States, but content continues to spill its way online. Inside you’ll find a really crappy quality look at the first clip that teases an awesome scare scene from the movie. Watching it this way truly doesn’t do it justice. (more…) READ MORE

Joe Dante’s ‘The Hole 3-D’ Getting Summer/Fall Release?

After winning me over at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, I couldn’t help but wonder where the heck Joe Dante’s 3-D teen horror-thriller The Hole (review) was, especially with the 3-D craze in full effect. Unlike Clash of the Titans and Alice in Wonderland, Dante shot the film using real 3-D. He tells Fangoria that you might get to see it in theaters come the end of summer. “We’re targeting the end of summer/early fall for a release date and are in discussions with several distributors,” he explained. Truthfully, this is a film that really relishes in the use of the third dimension and I hope everyone gets to witness what real 3-D looks like (unless of course you’ve seen Avatar). A quick other news bit, the film’s official website has gone live and features behind-the-scenes videos, images and more. Go check it out. (more…) READ MORE
