Red Canyon is about Devon and Regina, siblings, who return to a small town years after a brutal attack. They’ve come to the small desert town with three friends to ride motorcycles, hike, and decide what to do with the house their mother left to them. But soon they run into people from their past – people who remember the attack – and aren’t very happy that Devon and Regina have come home. It isn’t long before the whole group finds themselves victims of a relentless attack. By the end of the film we learn that even their memories have betrayed them – as they try to find a way out the harsh desert badlands alive.
This is a very gritty, seventies style thriller, with a creepy realistic feel to it that you don’t see very often. The movie was made in Utah and from what I’ve read was controversial even before filming began. The landscape is amazing though – beautiful and creepy – and it makes me want to go to the place they filmed it – although that would be a bit scary too!
The entire cast was really good – much better than you see in the average horror film – but you can see why, because it’s a much smarter film than usual. The actors in the movie are Norman Reedus, “Boondock Saints: II – All Saints Day”; Justin Hartley, “Smallville”; Noah Fleiss, “Brick”; Christine Lakin “Hottie and Nottie”; and Ankur Bhatt, “Dirt”.
To me this was a far more frightening movie than a “Nightmare on Elmstreet”… or similar because this movie could happen. It really gives you the feeling that we are all on the edge of something very close to insanity.
Red Canyon takes a fresh, and really professional, turn with classic horror story ideas. It has a nice polish that most of these lower budget horror films lack, and doesn’t have the feel of “let’s run this direction screaming now”.
Much like Wolf Creek, Red Canyon makes you realize that some times the things in the dark are best left undisturbed.
The cast is great, but both Justin Hartley and Christine Lakin shine. I hope to see more from them both in the future!
This movie is a sick bastard in the best way. It’s dirty, it’s surprising and has a silent shocker end. Keeps you busy puzzling all the pieces together and the cast did a great job. Norman Reedus (BDS I &II)is just brilliant as the violent redneck Mac.
There are no silly teenage scream queens running around in false directions or other usual clichés. And what’s really creeping you out, is the realism. Like it could happen right now, maybe even somewhere near you – and no one will ever find out about it.
This movie feels like horror from the good old days -dirty, nasty, evil, realistic and without a ‘Mainstream Button’ on it!!!
