My new favourite movie… Think Bubba Ho Tep crossed with Army of Darkness.
This is a hard one for me to review. I so desperately wanted to love this movie and just found that I didn’t. It’s not for lack of trying though. I’ve read both books and loved them and when I heard they were making a movie of JDTE my first thought was “But that’s an unfilmable movie.” I give them all sorts of credit for trying, I really do, but at the end of the day, the manic fun that made the book so great is just missing. The movie never took off the way I was hoping it would and I think that’s because it had such a hard time condensing what is an incredibly dense book. This is a fun movie, and the effects are great, I just was left flat – something that the book definitely didn’t leave me feeling. Honestly, “There’s Spiders…” would be an easier book to film because it’s much more focused than the first. Still, I give them all the credit in the world for trying. It just fell short of what made me love the book.
