Complete waste of time! Dull, uninteresting, predictable, and just a bad horror movie. period. Im sorry but this movie did nothing for me.It didnt have me in suspense or scared, or hardly even awake. I was expecting a decent little thriller but it wasnt even that
Im being very generous with my score
These scores are very generous. This movie was a complete MISS. The only thing effective was the creepiness of that hairy tough guy masturbating behind the walls. Eeeuuch. Fail on all other levels. Shame on you Hilary Swank. Sorry, you looked like skinny Willem DaFoe with long hair.
first of all the movie was crap….secondly the movie was total crap….dont bother watching it….its a true waste of time
I liked it. It could have been GREAT, but it was overall just good. Short, but sweet. Fans of the ‘psycho/crazy person thriller’ genre should check it out. Hilary and JDM were very good.
This movie was LIQUID DUMP!!!
Hillary has got a nice ass though!!
This movie has been made a hundred times, a hundred times better than this.
Terrible. Hammer films better start thinking of some good ideas to make a comeback. Hilary Swank did a good job but it wasnt enough to save this one. THe pacing and editing were horrible and it just was not creepy at all.
Wanted thriller, got a rehashed stinker. While the Peeping Tom thing presents nothing new, a problem with Resident is that it also doesn’t offer anything resembling chills or thrills–just a perverted Tool Time guy lookin’ through holes in the walls and doing some violating. What the heck has happened to Swank’s career I just don’t get–this is bottom of the barrel. By the way, JohnMarrone, your observation is hilarious: In the opening scene when Hils is Joggin’ through the park with her hair back, she did resemble Willem Dafoe (although panning down she doesn’t)–funny shit. Uninvolving and boring thriller wannabe–pass on this or dare waste your time.
Sometimes it’s important to watch movies like this, as a reminder of how bad Hollywood sometimes can be – and “The Resident” is really bad. All the beautiful settings in here can’t hide the fact that everything about this movie just sucks.
The first third is lame. Then there’s a predictable plot twist, followed by a pretty boring second third and a rather uninteresting last third. The performance of the overrated Hilary Swank is implausible, Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character is horribly annoying and Christopher Lee is just wasted here.
The script is awful, directing and editing seem amateurish, and there’s nothing interesting about the soundtrack and the camera work.
Unnecessary crap.
Wanna see a great movie about creepy landlords and tormented tenants, then go and watch Polanski’s amazing “The Tenant” instead.
Don’t understand the hate surrounding this film on this site. Yea it’s not a brutal gore filled, sex filled horror film. In fact not really a horror movie, it’s more of a thriller. This film has excellent acting and goes along at a decent pace. I thought Morgan did a good job with his character, there was some quite disturbing scenes involving him. Swank does a good job as well, as I found myself on her side and rooting for her the whole way. It’s nothing too jumpy and yes this type of movie has been done before, but a solid movie that is worth a watch.
The Resident was an good old fashioned, simple, unsettling and creepy thriller that was like a modern day Psycho or Peeping Tom meets The 4th Floor but just not as memorable. The film was pretty predictable but effective with its setup, atmoshere, a few scares and tense scenes. The acting was serviceable with two always talented leads Hilary Swank and Jeffery Dean Morgan who was especially creepy with his role but the story was just on the weaker side to me and never went above and beyond but was just good enough to keep watching but I can see why this never went to theaters even with leads like these but it’s funny because it was miles better than the lame and safe theatrical released thriller early this year The Roommate. The finale was satisfying and kept me on the edge of my seat but in a way it could of been much stronger. Overall it never went below or beyond my expectations it was just simply good enough for me to recommend it and it’s a great way to kill some time especially if you like hitchcock like thrillers.
You know, I’ve seen too many thrillers, and if I had not seen so many, one person such as me might have enjoyed a movie like “The Resident”. Yeah, I think we all know that I’ve seen so much worse from this genre than this very offering, but come on; it doesn’t give me a new experience. It recycles new material, or at least tries to, and it’s not all that good at it. It lacks atmosphere, it lacks a good story, and it lacks the substance to be better than all the other direct-to-video thrillers. It deserved the treatment, by all means.
A doctor (Hilary Swank) moves in to a new apartment, where her charming landlord is played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Swank initially likes the place, and makes herself at home, but all-too-soon, it’s clear that something is up. But it can’t be Morgan’s character, can it? I mean, he’s taking care of his grandfather, Christopher Lee. So he can’t have too much time on his hands, can he? Oh, you just wait. Soon, we’ll figure out what Morgan’s TRUE intent is; and we discover that he’s really a typical psychopathic voyeur who creates peepholes out of wall outlets and one-way mirrors, none of which Swank really notices until near the end, where she suspects that Morgan really is just an all-around creepy man.
To its credit, the creepiness of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character is unnerving; although never in a truly frightening sense. He’s obsessed and excited, but never does he feel like an actual character. One thing that I can, however, say for this movie, is that it has good acting. Hilary Swank simply “plays the part” as her doctor character, although she is overshadowed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s performance, which is decidedly more interesting to watch. Christopher Lee is an all-around cool guy (love “The Wicker Man”!), but does that mean his character is worth caring about? Nope!
By the end of the movie, I was yawning. Not even the climatic struggle between tenant and landlord proved to be interesting, and in the end, this was just one big waste of my precious time. Of course, you could do much, much worse; but why would you want to? Like I said, this movie just doesn’t offer anything new, and that’s precisely why I’m telling you to avoid it.
To its credit, it does have some good cinematography by “Hellboy” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” photographer/cinematographer Guillermo Navarro. He has no doubt captured more stunning, exciting, and exquisite images; but you might as well enjoy his skill while it lasts. It might as well be the only truly worthwhile thing in “The Resident”; aside from those solid performances, decent pacing, and the fact that it’s just not quite as bad as some direct-to-video films. In the end, it just feels underwhelming, disappointing, and stupid, and the worst part is that it’s probably all three of those things.
