This is a hard movie to peg down. On the one hand i loved it, on the other i hated it.
There are many good things about this movie eg: some good kills, stark cinematography, french humour, good final girl, interesting characters.

BUT, there are a couple of real bad/annoying things that almost crap over the good stuff.
One of them being THIS MOVIE HAS NO 3rd ACT. IT is like they literally ran out of money and said “Lets call it a day”. Also the twist ending, it seemed to me to be a twist for the sake of having a twist, the movie would have been better off dropping the twist and going for a well defined ending, thus giving us a 3rd act.

    Ah, that feels good!
After huge fails like “Humans”, “Sheitan” or “High Lane”, I finally get to see a French horror movie that is actually good – “The Pack”, a gorgeous and entertaining little violencefest which gives me new hope for the future of French horror cinema.

It’s not a perfect movie due to a muddled and messed up script with too many ideas thrown into the pot, a few unnecessary and annoying characters, and a disappointing and confusing ending.

Despite these flaws, I totally enjoyed it!
There are a lot of awesome performances from Ã0/00milie Duquenne, Yolande Moreau and the great Philippe Nahon (yes, the killer from “High Tension”). The soundtrack is very powerful and the cinematography is mindblowingly awesome, mainly because of many great tracking shots and loads of beautifully atmospheric shots of eerie locations and rural/backwoods settings.

We also get to see some nice gore (torn off arms, decapitated heads…) and some cool torture (brandings, a bizarre kinda-melking-machine), the main villain (the batshit insane big momma La Spack) is one of the most amusing villains I’ve seen in a long time and the Pack itself, a horde of undead kinda-zombie-creatures, looks just amazing.

    More noteworthy tidbits:
Nahon’s ‘I fuck on the first date’ shirt, the scene where Nahon puts saltsticks into his ears and nose, the ‘John Wayne, John Wayne’ guy, another guy who’s wrapped up in plastic and runs into a wall, the creepy awakening of the creatures, the gory very last shot, the funny masochist/sadist/necrophiliac/etc. joke,
and last but not least, a brief appearence from the legendary Citroen HY van which we all know from High Tension.

Overall, a highly enjoyable Euro-horror flick. Would love to see a sequel!

Finally B-D Selects has given us a solid film. It’s dark and grungy, with no overbearing silly humor, and gets quite gruesome in parts. My only issue with the film was that it was a bit too long getting to the crux of the story. Had about 10-15 minutes been loppe off the first hour, it would have been better. And the finale was kinda spotty at times, but the subtle twist of an ending was rather cool. Keep bringing us flicks like these B-D! 7.5/10

Ya this movie really isnt that good at all. This a very boring horror film and ya those cool looking creatures you dont see them really that much until the end. What the hell was that ending I just dont understand it all. I was really excited to see this and once again I was let down. Dont even bother unless your really bored.

I expected more from the French. Has a few moments but mostly it feels like an American direct-to-dvd flick. I’ve liked the other flicks that BD selects have given us but this one just didn’t cut the mustard. And what’s with the cop wearing a profanity riden shirt? Did I miss something there? Is he part of the Swear Police?

Can’t complain at all… The Pack (La Meute) a very stylish, entertaining and beautifully photographed French-Belgian film with some real suspense, and a nice way of using character to stir the horror pot. Yolande Moreau gives a fantastic performance as La Spack who runs a disreputable backwoods diner that is heavy on atmosphere and sort of the culinary equivalent of the Bates Motel. Stay out of the Water Closet, if you know what’s good for you.

Mixing equal parts Rest Stop, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Night of the Living Dead, the director/screenwriter creates a tasty melange, spiced with bloody bits. Well worth watching on a dark, rainy night.

(I recommend the French language soundtrack with subtitles.)
