Although this movie isn’t as bad as the rating I gave it, I rated it so low, because Gus Van Sant failed to add anything to one of the greatest movies ever made. He basically did a frame by frame reshoot of Alfred Hitchcocks masterpiece. I believe that was his goal, but that leaves me asking the question, then whats the point? Also as much as I like many of the actors in this movie, they all seemed to be trying to hard to emulate the original actors to much. Because of this the lines often seem unnatural or poorly delivered. If you’ve never seen Psycho do yourself a favor and just stick with Alfred Hitchcock’s original.
Gay Van Sant ruined this movie. It should’ve never been remade. It was just like the original with a few homosexual images added into this peice of crap movie. Showing Viggo Mortensen’s ass. What was the point of that.
Awesome poster. Putrid movie. Inexplicably, Gus Van Sant honed his talents in on making a shot-for-shot remake of an undisputed classic. Vince Vaughn is miscast, Anne Heche is miscast, Julianne Moore is miscast, Viggo Mortensen is miscast… the whole film is miscast. There is no point to this film. It’s dubbed as a shot-for-shot remake, yet Van Sant interjects some odd imagery in some scenes that defeats the whole promise of the film–which was questionable to begin with. The scene where Norman watches Marion undress and jump in the shower is taken to a vile low in this one. When folks–including myself–get worked-up over Hollywood re-visiting DAWN OF THE DEAD, TEXAS CHAINSAW, HALLOWEEN, and FRIDAY THE 13TH… i always remember that the worst has already been perpetrated with the existence of this movie. Complete crap.
i think this should have been remade but with new kills and scenes this is just shit and complete of it if they wanted to make a shot for shot remake then leave the original alone its a good thing they kept the music but COME ON!
A weak film to say the least. Vaughn can’t touch Anthony Perkins performance as Norman Bates. If they wanted to do something fun with this, they should release the original in color. They could make some very slight touch-ups with the kill scenes. Since the blood was done with chocolate syrup in the original, they could go back & change the color to red. I think the original would be fantastic in color. Give the detective a visual stab wound as he’s falling backwards. That always bothered me. You see the blood on his face, but his shirt is clean with no stab wound. I think it would be great!!! Pass on this one & watch the original!!!
shit
i actually thought this movie was fairly decent. it was meant to be a shot for shot remake of the original and all things considered it was good!
trivia
anne heches buttons in the scene before the shower match the curtain
there are several gay references in this movie which i felt were well placed
i wonder if anne heche had an trouble with the straight love scenes considering that she was in a relationship with ellen degeneres at the time…
Come on guys. This movie isn’t THAT bad. i mean sure, it’s not as good as the original, but that’s because no one can make remake as good. At least they didn’t completely change and ruin the story (ex. house on haunted hill), although i do agree about some other acting seeming a little forced.
you call this a remake? it’s more of a duplicate! it’s the same exact thing, same story, same acting, some murder scenes and body count and same dialouge. the only difference is that it’s in colour and has a different cast.
i think Gus Van Sant only did this was so that there would be a colour version. well, if that’s the case, then why not just re-release the movie in coulour.
This proves that you can do a shot for shot remake of a classic and produce a piece of sh-t because what made the original so good was the performances and direction.
Pathetic!
This is shot for shot of the Oringanl if ya gonna do a Reamke at leats chanege most od the setting and lines of the film. Overall averge acting by a talent cast while havin new too the table of this dull Reamke its not evern sacrey and is such a shock to Reamke such a classic film by A.H they should leave classic film the way they are. This one was in colour and could’nt tell if it was set in the 60′s of in modren time Back then 1998 but this is the most dull/average Reamke Ive seen soo far in horror movies
I thought the remake SUCKED in every possible way, from the re-design of the house to choosing
of the actors/actresses to play the parts of the
characters, the completely fucked up the entire
movie when they should’ve just left it alone.
Damn them.
No here’s a good one to talk about! The Infamous Psycho remake.
First I want to say that originally I hated it when I first saw in back in 1998. I was hoping for something NEW and FRESH with a few touch of the original scattered about. Well it was definitely something new, so to speak. New as in that it wasn’t truly a remake but rather a duplicate. I think it’s one of the first remakes ever to be a complete shot-for-shot of the original. Well, like I said I wasn’t to happy because I was expecting more and felt like I could have just go home and watched the original instead.
A year later I watch it again and somehow my entire feeling towards it changed completely. The more I looked at it closely the more I started to like it. It truly isn’t that bad. The entire movie is more of an experiment to show what would happen if a remake is exactly the same as the original. In many ways it’s more of a tribute to to Hitchcock’s original because if the remake was NOT a shot-for-shot then it would just have been a disrespect to Sir Hitchcock. It is one of those movies that you don’t want to TEAR UP and GUT OUT just so a newer generation will enjoy it. (like most remakes in the last decade) They gave it full respect by keeping the same except for a few subtle changes here and there.
The cast was a good choice IMO and I think they did a wonderful job. Although the score is an updated version of the original that was composed by Bernard Herrmann, anything else wouldn’t have worked. Using the same score but rearranged by Danny Elfman seems to keep the mood and style of original as well as a little touch of modernism.
When I watch from time to time I can only see this a true art film that is very under appreciated. But I can’t complain because I at one time hated it. Sometimes movies need to be re-watched with an open mind to be fully understood and loved.
i didn’t like this at all. heche and vaughn, in my opinion, were terrible. this was just an unneeded movie. an excellent example of big wigs looking to steal directly from your pockets.
