[BEST & WORST '12] David Harley’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2012!

2012 has been a snoozer of a year for horror for the most part. I can’t think of another year that I’ve been with the site when I’ve been more indifferent, bored, disappointed, and otherwise unamused by most of what I watched. Not like it should come as a huge shock to anyone that went to the theatre this year, but most of what I’ve included on my Worst Of list are studio films that feel like they were distributed and made by people who just don’t care. Marketing and brand loyalty made some of these movies money, not the actual quality of what was on screen – talk about depressing. READ MORE

[BD Review] ‘The Raven’ Is Mediocre Poppycock

Relativity Media’s The Raven opens today. It stars John Cusack (Hot Tub Time Machine), Alice Eve (Star Trek 2), Luke Evans (The Hobbit) and Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and is probably quite a bit bloodier than you’re expecting. But it’s also not very good. READ MORE

The Raven John Cusack

John Cusack Quotes “A Tell Tale Heart” In First Clip From ‘The Raven’!

The macabre and lurid tales of Edgar Allan Poe are vividly brought to life – and death – in five Murderous Visions, which take us through the horrific murders inspired by Poe’s gothic tales in Relativity’s forthcoming The Raven. Bloody Disgusting is exclusively debuting the first of these murderous visions, “A Tell Tale Heart”, which features a very terrified Alice Eve who has been buried alive. Starring John Cusack as Poe, the movie is a deadly game of cat and mouse, which also stars Luke Evans, Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. READ MORE

‘The Raven’ Soars Into 2012

Currently in the midst of post-production, Relativity Media has picked a theatrical release date of March 9, 2012 for The Raven… but not necessarily under that name. The distributer announced that the title has been changed to James McTeigue’s Edgar Allan Poe project for the time being (a similar fate recently befell The Dibbuk Box). It could technically revert back to its original title by the time it’s released, but odds are it’ll end up being named something like ‘Poe’. READ MORE

Police State Terror in Mark Wahlberg’s ‘The Raven’

I love a cool concept, especially something that’s quasi-unique. The Fighter (and The Happening, LOL) star Mark Wahlberg apparently agrees as he’ll be producing a feature-length version of Ricardo De Montreuil’s short film The Raven (watch it inside) for Universal Pictures. Justin Marks will write the script that will focus on a young man with powers being chased around downtown Los Angeles by robotic police drones, while a giant police ship coordinates the effort from the skies above. The concept has a little of They Live, Eagle Eye, I, Robot, and a whole lotta awesome. There’s nothing more terrifying than the idea of a police state. Universal’s Raven is not to be confused with FilmNation and Intrepid Pictures’ project with the same title that tells the tale of Edgar Allan Poe. (more…) READ MORE

FilmNation Launches With Poe’s ‘Raven’ Tale

FilmNation Entertainment, launched by Glen Basner as a foreign sales company, has established a production arm and set Aaron Ryder to run it. FilmNation gets started with two projects, one of which is The Raven, the Hannah Shakespeare/Ben Livingston-penned thriller set in the last days of Edgar Allan Poe’s life, when he gets wrapped up in a serial killer investigation. Ryder originated the project at Endgame, which will co-produce and split the development costs with FilmNation, with Endgame financing production. Ryder will acquire properties, with the emphasis on scripts over books and pitches because the development cycle will be shorter, allowing Basner to begin lining up production financing that much sooner. Let’s hope for more horror. (more…) READ MORE

Rumor: Viggo Mortensen to Star in Stallone’s ‘Poe’

A scooper tells Cinema Blend that Sylvester Stallone has recently met with Viggo Mortensen and has offered him the role of Edgar Allan Poe in the film Poe, which Stallone will write-direct and produce. Mortensen is considering the role although he wants some slight revisions in the script. This is a unconfirmed rumor, so take it lightly. Considered the granddaddy of the Gothic horror tale, Poe’s life is rich with its own eerie details. He suffered from madness, depression and drugs, and was mysteriously found dead in a gutter in 1849. Among his most famous works were “The Raven” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” (more…) READ MORE

MOH Review: EP 2.11: Stuart Gordon’s ‘The Black Cat’

Inside we’ve posted our latest review from this season’s Masters of Horror (all reviews), which airs every Friday on Showtime. Inside you’ll find Tex Massacre’s review of “The Black Cat”, which was directed by Stuart Gordon. In episode 2.11, author Edgar Allan Poe (Jeffrey Combs) is out of ideas and short of cash while being tormented by a black cat that will either destroy his life or inspire him to write one of his most famous stories.
