Just finished watching Michael Reeve’s The Sorcerers, which was made one year before his masterpiece The Witchfinder-General came out. An eighty year old Boris Karloff stars as a disgraced hypnotist, looking for one more shot at recognition alongside Catherine Lacy as his frustrated wife.
I wasn’t expecting much, to be honest. I hadn’t heard much about this film and odds were it was going to be a bit of a dud.
I was wrong.
Professor Monserrat (Karloff) is looking for a subject to use in his latest experiment using hypnosis. He finds one in Mike (Ian Oglivy). Mike’s bored with his life, and easily led by the promise of something different. In a ploy which definitely wouldn’t work today Monserrat follows Mike to a burger joint and offers him a a part in something adventurous only if Mike would follow him home.
I’m not going to throw down any spoilers as I actually enjoyed how the movie unfolded. The scenes between Karloff and Lacy provide alot of spark as things escalate. There’s a few gorgeous girls for us blokes to ogle (Sally Sheridan as a pop singer in the club Mike hangs out in is especially easy on the eye I reckon) and the action comes along at a good pace in the second half of the movie.
The title is a bit misleading but it’s WELL worth watching if you can track down a copy.
