Nominations for the 85th annual Academy Awards were announced today by host Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Included in the noms were a slew of genre titles, which include Ridley Scott’s Prometheus for “Best Visual Effects”, stop-motion films ParaNorman and Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie for “Animated Feature Film,” while Fox Searchlight’s Hitchcock was nominated for “Makeup and Hairstyling”. Wow! It’s been a long time since I’ve done this column but I think the surfacing of the script for Alien: Engineers, the original incarnation of Prometheus, is a pretty good occasion, right? Ever since the release of Prometheus over the summer there’s been intense debate between the film’s fans and its (many) detractors – would it have been better as a straight Alien prequel? Some of the UK readers will get their hands on a Steelbook Edition that apparently carries an Easter Egg of epic proportion. Reddit user Huxleyism discovered that on the UK edition (it could also be included on the U.S. release) hides text written by character Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), which seems to indicated that Weyland’s mentor was a certain replicant-creating tycoon whose creations eventually got the best of him, ScreenCrush first reported. Fox Home Entertainment has a released a fresh preview trailer for the upcoming Prometheus Blu-ray release that comes rocking both alternate and deleted scenes. Snow White and the Huntsman‘s Sam Claflin (pictured below) has been cast as “Finnick” in the The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Described as “charismatic” and “clever,” Finnick — from District 4 — won the Hunger Games when he was 14. In theaters November 22, 2013 from Lionsgate and director Francis Lawrence, the sequel continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the fictional, futuristic nation of Panem. Due to the events of the previous novel, a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of the The Hunger Games. When Prometheus: The Art of the Film arrived on my doorstep Friday afternoon, it took all of my willpower not to immediately crack open the hefty hardback. But since I wasn’t seeing the film until Saturday, I resisted the temptation. Good thing I did, because the gorgeously produced The Art of the Film not only fills in many of the blanks that have frustrated moviegoers, it’s a seriously in-depth exploration that has the potential to spoil the movie entirely.
