Awesome movie! I have always been a fan of Kate Beckinsale and she did an amazing job in this movie. Would suggest Underworld fans to give this movie a shot.
I have to say, i was REALLY impressed with this. the special effects are BY FAR the best in the series. I The CGI is a VERY noticable improvement over the previous entries. The mythology is still there but instead of delving into it they just kind of hint at things so longtime fans will appreciate it more, but newbies wont be totally lost. it’s short, and kind of feels it, but thats the only negative i can find. Also missed Scott Speedman (he has a quick cameo, but don’t look too closely or you’ll see it’s actually a body double) but the sequel they set up at the end promises his return. oh, and the 3D was AMAZING
Quick and action-packed (I mean… there’s not even time to breathe!) and Kate Beckinsale clad in black leather, or vinyl, or whatever that stuff is, looks absolutely great! A worthy addition to the series with promise of yet another one to come. Of course the color scheme of these movies always leaves me with a severe case of “red and yellow color deprivation.” I guess that’s why everyone in the “underworld” always looks upset and angry.
Soooo underworld awakening… It was a good idea. Unfortunately it failed to deliver the old vampire feel u get while watching underworld and evolution. I felt like I was watching a remake of resident evil with warewolves and vampires instead of zombies. And since it is 3d all you see is an hour and 18 minutes of blood flying at the screen. The kid actor and kate beckensales return to the series are possibly the best thing about the series.
I wish I could rate it higher… But I have to give it a 6/10.
P.s. can we have wiseman back to direct the next movie?
Despite the lycan special effects being mostly worse than the original film (whose fx were pretty good), the movie is a logical progression in the series, and enjoyable popcorn fare. And Kate Beckinsale is stil uber haaawwwwt in tight black leather as she kicks major ass. If you like the series, you should like this entry.
Awakening is an amazingly kick-ass, well-written, and perhaps the goriest of the four films! Picking up essentially where Evolution left off six years ago with a sleek recap, I was entertained, intrigued, and wowed by Kate Beckinsale. The 3D is amazing too, particulary in IMAX where the sound and picture were astounding. Great movie, and great cast! Everyone should go and support R-rated studio films like this and see that the fun Underworld franchise ain’t dead.
I loved the first one and rise of the lycans but didn’t care at all for this one. I felt the whole thing was her chasing the kid around and fighting with no story and why was michael cgi? I agree with pavilargo it didn’t give you the old vampire feel like with the other ones. I felt Kate was a little cheesy too ( Angelina Jolie like….she fights and kills everyone and pulls ridiculous stunts).
Ironically, this film is the dumbest yet the best of the series. Half-assed attempts at intrigue and bland uninformative back-stories have been dropped in favor of what Underworld does best: Vampire/Werewolf brawls. Inane poorly written dialogue removed: check. Exploration/Explanation of silly werewolf vs vamp plot conceit removed: check. Clumsy, ham-handed romance element removed: check. I really don’t know how to rate this film. The makers realized all the things they were weak at…but instead of improving them with better writing…just removed the problem elements…which is essentially everything other than Beckinsale in tight pleather beating people up in cool action sequences. It’s only an improvement by the subtraction of all the terrible elements of the previous films. It is no way ‘interesting’ or ‘engaging’, just fodder for the eyes. 2.5/5, all other underworlds do not rank on any system. Netflix.
It was alright, Saw it in 3D thought it helped the movie in a few ways, it’s at best worth a matinee. The lack of Scott Speedsman(as Micheal was shown more then a few times with a look alike that you could tell barely looked like him) was noticeable and the part where she cracks the glass is funny as the cracks are a good 6 inches below where she’s hitting her head. it’s better then the first 2, didn’t care to see the third as it’s a prequel and the fact we haven’t heard about some of previous characters tells us a lot. oh and that little girl was pretty f***ing intense. At the end I was entertained but not enough to suggest people see it for more then a matinee and that’s if you like the films, if you hate them then this is gonna be just alittle bit better for you. so to those who hate the other 2 I say catch it on TV when it finally hits but don’t pay for it
A complete departure from the series that boils down to a stupid, loud, CG heavy and cliched action movie. Bad in almost every category, there is no fun to be had. The only entertainment I got was from laughing at the film and making jokes.
not the deepest movie out there but it was pretty dope
I really enjoyed this film. The action was great and it has some very nice gory moments. The story is very simple compare to the other films but I like it its easy to follow and it takes the series in a different direction. And I also like the fact that the giant lycan is an actual character and not just some random creature that appears in the film. I give it 8/10
By far the best of the series. Action packed and a lot of fun. By the way, I highly recommend seeing it in IMAX, it was amazing!
FREAKIN UNBELIEVABLE! I’ve always been a nig fan of the Underworld movies and Kate Beckinsale but WOW this one is by far the best in the series and the most fun I have had in forever! I can’t wait to see it again!
i thought it was awesome for what it was! plenty of gore and the big ass lycan was actually intimidating-ish. Glad to see vampires back to their goth glory instead of being sparky pieces of s**t like twilight
Kate is back with a vengeance in really cool looking 3D. Great action movie
I really liked this one! My whole family disagree’s but I thought it was perfect
Also love seeing vampiers being fucking vampires unlike this new generation of sparkles -_- What I didn’t like though was how the lycans were disguised… Trying not to spoil the movie if you haven’t seen it but when you watch you’ll know what I mean.. Yes, it was shocking but C’MON!
anyone who gave this film is an idiot with that said anyone who gave this film a 10 is also an idiot. the film is cgi heavy which does hurt it but the action is good and overall fun to wacth the plot is paper thin but works with this type of movie. If your going in certain expectation then well to put it simple why are you wacthing this film in the first place. This film does what its suppose to do best vampires killing lycans lycans killing vampires and humans killing both. enjoy the ride and look foward to part 5 sometime in 2013 or 14
If you like a lot of fighting and warring among creatures of the night then this is your cup of tea. There is plenty of it though the plot is rather flat with no sudden twists or turns but it handled itself pretty well. It was great in the special effects department but I think that should be expected. Before the movie ran out of gas, it ended with a hint of a sequel. They better make it simple 2d as the 3d can give you headaches after a while trying to follow all the flying bodies hit about the screen with all the fighting.
I saw this in the theatre on opening weekend. If you’re a fan of the series, you may like it, you may not. Ir’s pretty cgi heavy but, so was the last film. If you can get around it like i did, then you’ll have fun with it. It’s a fairly simply story for this entry. Easy for anyone to follow, unlike the first 2 that had to rely on flashbacks to fill in the missing bits. This film mostly relies on a simple story and action to make the movie and in my opinion they pull it off nicely. Thats my opinion anyway. I don’t always agree with cg fx but they kind of works for this film.
Basically this is like watching an 88 minute music video about vampires and lycans. It looks stunning, has ultra kinetic action, and (finally) really well done 3D..but guess what. It’s totally empty calories here, style over substance. If you just want to zone out on stylish vampire action and not use one brain cell, give this a try.
Pure action. Pure awesome.
Underworld: Awakening: **1/2
Kate Beckinsale slips back into her black leather garb for the fourth installment in the Underworld franchise and the camera is all over her, supplying no end of gratuitous butt shots. Aside from that, Underworld: Awakening is a pretty shallow movie with no emotional weight, but it does supply great eye candy, CGI effects and action set pieces. If that’s what you’re chasing, you’ll be happy as a clam with the film.
The humans have discovered the existence of vampires and lycans, aka werewolves, and predictably, they’re not happy about it. Selene (Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman) are hot targets, and their escape from the movie’s unnamed city is thwarted as human forces capture the duo after unleashing massive firepower.
Selene is held in cryogenic suspension for 12 years by the Antigen corporation, run by Dr. Jacob Lane (Stephen Rea). An unknown benefactor helps Selene escape confinement, and in a heartbeat, she’s back in her black leather dominatrix outfit, itching for action.
While searching for Michael, she finds Eve (India Eisley), an extraordinary girl who’s a hybrid of vampire and werewolf, and an unexpected ally in David (Theo James), son of the clan lord of the local vampire coven. The trio form a lose-knit team, fending off wave after wave of werewolf attacks wich, in addition to being dangerous and annoying, are really strange, since lycans are supposed to be close to extinction. So Selene’s got to figure out exactly what’s behind the lycan resurgence while searching for Michael. And what’s the secret behind Eve’s relation to Selene, anyway?
Underworld: Awakening is a pretty hollow, empty movie as far as dramatic weight’s concerned. Beckinsale doesn’t bump into any of the scenery, but she can’t really emote worth a damn, so her function is to shoot straight and look good doing it. The rest of the cast doesn’t manage to do much better, turning in wooden performances across the board.
The direction’s another story. Co-directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein are excellent at directing action sequences, crafting scenes that are visually lush, smooth and easy to follow. A chase scene on a busy city street between three werewolves and Selene’s stolen van is a real standout.
Underworld: Awakening isn’t a classic by any standard, but it’s good, mindless fun. The eye candy is lavish, the gore is plentiful and the action is first-rate. So if you want to turn off your brain for 90 minutes and dig some great visuals, Underworld: Awakening will work just fine.
