They had my money. Fuckers.
I just attended the thursday night sneak peek screening of The Devil Inside. I was so excited because all of the advertisements made it out to look like it was going to be a no holds barred fucked up exorcism film in the vein of paranormal activity and the exorcist. Unfortunately, the movie is no where near as effective as either of those films. The only actually scares in the movie are the ones in the trailer. The rest of the film is terrible. Its sloppy and goes from documenting the actors talk about bull shit and then going to one of the scenes given away in the trailer. Then the ending actually starts to get a little cool but it ends so abruptly. Serioulsy, the whole movie theater was furious. The Devil Inside definitely started 2012 off terrible for the horror genre and I hope to god the rest of the year is not like this. Skip this one and wait for The Woman In Black.
Saw it this evening at a 9:00 screening. Was excited and reeeealy hoped it would have some good scares, but I said the same thing- they gave away the creepy parts in the previews. And yup, the ending sucked. So disappointed, along with the packed theatre. All you heard was people saying, “What?! That’s it?!?” Pretty comical walking out of the 9:00 show and passing by the huge line of people for the midnight show. Felt like yelling, ” Wait for the DVD!!”
Ok there was good and bad in this movie, but actually I think the good almost outweighs the bad. I guess I was so ready for this movie to be terrible that when I watched it and it wasn’t terrible I was really happy. Let’s start with the good. The exorcism scenes were insane they were done so well. The woman who played Isabella’s mother did amazing, her facial expressions alone were terrifying. There were some good old fashioned jump scares but they actually weren’t over-used like I thought they would be. In the end, the movie definitely creeped me out. Now for the bad. You will actually get nauseous from this movie, not from the gore or crazy body bending but because of the damn shakiness of the camera! Ok, I know it’s supposed to be found footage and everything but holy shit. Like even when the cast is just sitting around the camera is unbelievably shaky. The filmmaker is supposed to be a professional documentary maker, so I don’t understand why he was so fucking shaky. That actually made me want the movie to be over as soon as possible (which to my amazement it was! I’ll get to that later…) I agree with the BD review, the priests were pretty boring and the only character that really had much of a development was Isabella. Perhaps the most annoying thing for me was how much they pushed the idea that this is supposed to be real. They tried soooooo hard to make us believe in this movie that it made me even less of a believer. They constantly acknowledge that the camera’s there and it get’s really old. Like reeeally old. And finally, oh that ending. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger outburst of disappointment. This movie is probably like an hour long in the end. Really. Personally, I didn’t hate the ending. The whole point of this movie was to try to make you think it’s real. And the ending is something that realistically makes sense. So I got that. But at the same time, ending a movie at a climax is going to make some people angry. And it definitely did. All in all, the movie was very entertaining and it actually made me look away from the screen a couple of times (not just because I wanted to throw-up from the shaky camera haha). If you want a fun movie that will creep you out, go see it. Just warning you, it’s short and the ending will make you want to throw your popcorn. But other than that, the overall movie wasn’t bad. CONNECT THE CUTS!
The movie starts off with a well done intro and builds some tension with a good scare to open up the movie. After 15 mins however the movie slows down for while before going into another exorcism scene. Then again slows down for a bit, which is why I did not really like the movie because it builds up great tension then it dies down with no delivery. The story line is interesting enough to hold your attention but then there are just some unnecessary scenes with commentary interviews from the characters which reminded me of “Real World” show. There are good scares that make you jump out of your seat and the visual effects are done very well making it look realistic. At the end of the movie the last 20 minutes builds very high tension and suspense but falls completely flat with no delivery and an unsatisfying ending that seemed rushed. Overall The Devil Inside deserves a C- grade. I hope this is the last exorcism movie because they have been done too many times and they are not scary anymore. They are all so predictable and keep recycling the same formulas just adding new cheap scares to make you jump. Just happy I didnt pay!
Well I’m not going to say that I’m surprised that this just didn’t work on any level for me because I didn’t have much expectations but come on we as horror fans deserve better than this clueless, dull film. The creators of this film treated us like we were dumb and never heard about or seen an exorcism film before and that got irritating very quickly and eye roll inducing, I mean do something different that we haven’t seen before and you don’t need a high budget to know that, be creative/inventive and open your minds if you have one and you can do amazing things to a film. The acting wasn’t bad but the writing and characters weren’t believable and effective except for one actress who gave it all when on here limited scenes she was given and she stole the show and that is Suzan Crowley who plays troubled and possibly possessed Maria Rossi and it was her dead on intensity that put shivers down my spine but the rest of this is scarefree unfortunately. The whole found footage thing has been done so much to death that it’s becoming numbing to the emotional impact it’s supposed to give and I was just looking at my watch wanting the whole film to be over already and was tempted to walk out and that is not a good sign when the film is only 87 minutes to be exact, nothing good or fresh ever came and that ending is the worst excuse for an ending I’ve seen in a while and they really need to stop that whole abrupt ending trend because we as moviegoers pay to see a whole film and what they see in the trailers as well! Almost every element in this horror snooze is repetitive and there weren’t even a shocking twist or two worth mentioning and once again I think the found footage genre is going in a downward spiral into extinction and I don’t know what they can do now to make this fresh again but hopefully a talented director in the future can answer that. Overall it’s this years The Unborn meets The Last Exorcism in terms of that the trailers are way better and scarier than the actual film and I really urge you to not waste your money or time on this junk you will listen if you are smart. Worst horror film so far this year and hopefully the very few. Not recommended!!!! 4.9 out of 10
I hope I don’t see anything worse than this piece…Only good thing about the film was the cinematography. Besides that I think the writers/director saw one too many exorcism films.
People seem to be hating this movie for all the wrong reasons. I myself enjoyed this film for all the right ones. First off the acting is superb, especially for a horror film, which we all know can be atrocious sometimes (Danielle Harris, I’m looking at you… Hatchet 2) however the actors all held their own. Secondly, the cinematography is excellent, I found the shots showed just what they needed too, the handheld camera created the perfect amount of stress in each shot. The exorcisms were great, SFX wise, as well as acting. The movie didn’t have any scares (except one misplaced jump scare) but it was disturbing, which is what made it scary, Psychologically. The film also speaks scientifically quite a bit which really makes it a lot better. The only thing that I feel was flawed in this film was plot holes and unexplained dialogue and the ending. However, I did not mind the ending, but there really wasn’t an ending to begin with. I feel this is the most major flaw. The film suffers because of an abrupt ending, extremely similar to The Last Exorcism. I think hardcore horror fans will like this more than causal horror movie goers, mainly because hardcore fans will be able to appreciate what this film does right, rather than focus on what it does wrong.
Yep, it’s as bad as they’re saying. I knew this before I even leaving to the movie theater, but decided just to stick with it since I was seeing it with an old horror movie friend. Summing it up, the acting is fucking terrible, particularly the lead girl who played Maria. The priests were annoying. The only good performance came from the woman who played the possessed mother. Bascailly this film was just 3 exorcism scenes sandwiched together with boring first-person acting and dialogue that no one cares about. I found two scenes interesting out of the entire 96 minutes. Also, I can get easily motion sick by shaky camera films, and it didn’t help with how bad the movie was. I personally didn’t think the ending was as terrible as the general consensus, as there was really no other way for it to go, and boy was I thankful that it was over. When the credits began, the entire audience I was in verbally roared about how bad the film was and how it was a waste of money. Oh well, what was I expecting for a movie that came out the first week of January? Nothing at all.
I loved this movie. Everyone has a different perspective and different taste when it comes to film, or art of any kind. Yet, it truly does just appear that these days people are simply looking for reasons to rip anything they can apart. To that I say, where the hell is your masterpiece and why haven’t you made it? This film is great in my opinion and it should score points just for not being another remake alone.
It’s not horrible, but I can’t help but wonder how such a basic and undeveloped concept made it to the big screen. Seriously, it wasn’t horrible but I really can’t get over the wide release this got.
Had potential…the just took a big crap all over itself.Where do these people find funding. Give me the money. I’ll do something theyt won’t fucking forget >;) C-
This movie sucks. It had an extremely terrible ending
Unoriginal. An R rated film that was treated to be a PG-13 film. There is nothing new here. Everyone booed. It was pathetic. I almost feel asleep.
The exorcism scenes were pretty cool but they seemed to be resolved way too easily. The end really pissed me off. Everyone in the theater let out a collective “Really?” Had potential but really ruined itself at the end.
So what the ending was abrupt . . . at least it made the movie realistic and unpredictable. Def atop one of the best exorcism movies in an age fixated on the genre. Give the film crew, director, and writer props for dishing out something we haven’t seen yet. I’d take a film like “The Devil Inside” over any other film produced today. It had spunk, character, and suspense. No it was not a 10 rate film, but it had potential. Don’t beef on this film for its ending. Now I can’t wait until Paranormal Activity 4 comes out, can’t wait to see what that franchise does next to top the found footage
.
“Found footage” horror is shit.
This movie was pretty awesome. Was it amazing naaaa. But it passed time, it wasn’t scary at all. It was creepy that’s for sure and some good shocking scenes too. And a pretty awesome ending. All in all it was a pretty good film. I was happy with it.
Was it the best of the found footage genre? No. Was it god awful like other reviewers are saying? No! I quite enjoyed this document/found film exocism film. As far as the ending goes, it was a document tape that ended when the person filming couldn’t film anymore (no spoilers) So why all the anger? It’s the same fools who vented they hated how Clovefield ended without explanation. Somethings you just can’t control or explain, I just like to pretend I found this in an old house and watched it. It’s not like the person who filmed it is there to explain every nook and cranny to me. All in all, it’s a found footage film based on the devil and possession. If you were expecting more, you are fool, if you are expecting less then you aren’t a fan of this genre. If you are a fan, it’s worth a look IMO.
This movie was miserable and the ending was a copout. Don’t waste your time or money. I should have gone with my gut: I always know when a movie is going to suck if I am embarrassed after watching the trailer. Then again, it’s not like a “found footage” movie can ever be surprising… they always end the same way.
I can’t believe this is the movie starting off my new year. Geez, I hope it’s not a bad omen of the films to come. Than again it is the shitastic month of January one of the two months of the year(the other being September) where they release their throwaway films. Made for less than a million dollars by a company named Insurge films that I’ve never heard of “The Devil Inside” is a boring, generic rehash of horror cliches with alot of imagination but left effectless by bad performances, confused direction and well tiresome horror cliches. The film tells the tale of a young woman who comes to Rome to visit her mother in a mental hospital. After not having seen her the better portion of her life. Because she was commited there after she murdered three people while they were performing an exorcism on her. Of course the daughter arrives with a cameraman to document the experience and she discovers her mother is indeed possessed. With the help of two priests who conduct unapproved exorcisms she is invited to attend exorcisms so that she may better understand her mothers situation. The big problem with this film above all others even though it has many, Is that it’s not beleievable in the least. Their are such huge gaps in the logic of the film that leave you feeling confused. Such as the fact that we are supposed to believe that they would commit her to a mental institution in Rome despite the fact that she lives in America or that anyone would think it would be a good idea for someone to tag along for exorcisims or that any of the characters in this film could gain any type of authority to visit any of these places or conduct any of the situations that appear on film. Most notably the exorcisim of her mother in a different hospital room than in which the one she stays, and there are many many more. None of the performances are very effective, the characters are not well drawn, the film making feels shorted, the spfx look cheesy and there are really no scares. All of which is sad because the film has moments where you can see the potential it has of becoming a much better film. Had they further developed the characters and storylines which in tail would have heightened the films suspense level and made the film more effective overall they could have really hit something great with this concept. Instead what we are left with is a mishmash of sordid horror cliches and stolen scenes from much better films that would have served better had they been rereleased in their original counterparts. That being said I’m a big fan of the found footage film and it’s very rare that I don’t enjoy them. I find the whole execution to be very immersive and engaging but a bad movie is a bad movie and despite some promise “The Devil Inside” is just that.
*.5/5
My favorite found footage horror film yet! Which is saying a lot bc I really dug the Paranormal Activity movies especially 3. This movie works on every level even the crazy ending. An actually scary movie. Horror fans GO NOW DROP WHATEVER U ARE DOING AND GO!
This movie is complete garbage! please dont waste your money. It is pointless, plotless, and has absolutely nothing to offer for a horror fan. Stupidest found footage film ive seen. Every single person who was in the theater with me left the theater feeling ripped off and pissed off. Please avoid. Stupidest exorcism movie yet, watch the exorcist, or even the last exorcism to have a much better time than you will with this
I would rate this film three skulls simply if it were scary. I found it entertaining, intelligent and definitely creepy with a few “oh shit” moments.
Overall, The Devil Inside is a creepy story about the world of exorcisms and the horrifying reality of spiritual evil and wickedness. The main complaint is the rather abrupt ending. Well I actually found it satisfying. What did people expect? For eveyrone to walk off into the sunset holding hands and living happily ever after?
I would recommend it if you’re looking for some creepy thrills but for die hard horror buffs they may find it a little slow and stale.
This movie is shit. Actually shit is less shitty than this travesty.
this film started off fantastic and had me going. It has plenty of scares and shockers that one would expect from a demonic flick. I think that the writer just up and quit in the middle of the film and it just ended so abruptly. There is no satsfaction for beating the devil or the vitctims coming out of this saved in any way. Don’t waste your money and just wait for the DVD to rent it.
ending sucked
Wasn’t anything great, wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen either. There were moments that were good and the overall idea what good, but it was really kind of a let down. But I’ve definitely seen worse movies, so I can’t tear it apart.
As has been said, not the best, but not the worst, movie I’ve ever seen. Hell, it’s not even the worst found footage movie I’ve ever seen. Good gore, some suspense, intense exorcism scenes. But unfortunately, most found footage movies have to end the way this one does… only in this case, there is no ending. The roller coaster ratchets up quietly to the top of that ramp, only to stop right there and never come down. There’s no payoff. At all. And that’s what pissed off most of the folks who’ve seen this movie, I’d imagine. The movie held everyone in my theater in its palm until the shitty ending that really was no ending at all. That’s when all the booing started, lol. I liked it for what it was, but still have trouble with the lack of a third act and the fact that it was a found footage movie that masqueraded as a fully produced “documentary”. Seriously, folks, if the footage got fully produced, as the movie implies that it is, in face, a documentary… who finished, edited, and produced it? Anyway, I’d recommend this movie, but cautiously… you’re gonna hate how it all ends.
I actually liked this movie. It wasn’t great or anything, but it was still fun to watch. I thought the ending kind of fit for this kind of movie…
I know this is a horror website, but have any of you guys complaining about the ending seen a documentary? It’s pretty standard to end a documentary by giving a website where someone can find more information on the subject. As far as the “abruptness” of the ending, certainly doesn’t end any more abruptly than any other “found footage” movie. All that aside, this movie still wasn’t all that impressive, seeing as all the creepy or scary moments were in the trailer. If you haven’t seen the trailer and like exorcism movies, you might enjoy this movie, but for everyone else, this movie will fall flat. More information here:

Really dug this film. I thought it was very well done, and the tense/ scary moments were well played. The acting was a lot better than i expected as well. It may have helped that I heard so many complaints about the abrupt ending prior to seeing it, because I was expecting something a lot worse. It actually ends no differently than any other found footage movie, IMHO the ending was above par for this kind of thing. **Spoiler** You actually see what happens to the characters and it isn’t an out of nowhere event**
Overall keep your expectations reasonably and you should be pleasantly surprised, I was. What kind of ending were y’all expecting with a mockumentary?
I should have listened to my guts when it said not to waste my money on the film. Just like all the other documentary exo movies, this was disappointing, and this could have been an amazing movie if the ending hadn’t of been such abrupt garbage which makes sense but just annoyed me… so for those who loved it I wish I could see what you seen, or could show me the ways.
As for me…. I’m listening to my guts for now on.
This movie is a good watch if you wish to open your mind to the world of demonic possession. In my honest opinion, there is very little entertainment value to this movie. I will counter that by saying congratulations to the movie people for keeping to a very realistic view of possession and exorcism.
Being a MASSIVE fan of the Exorcist I am still waiting for a decent exorcism movie to surface. The Devil Inside was a rip off of the REC movies with a touch of The Last Exorcism. Out of the whole movie the stand out scene is the basement exorcism. Thats 10 mins from a 75 min movie. Then theres lots of shouting and location changes. Again, there is nothing original about this movie and unfortunately I found it quite tedious and boring. Please for the love of god!! We need a big budget Exorcism movie focused on a central character that we care about and enough with the “found footage” shite that’s been shoved down our necks for the last couple of years!! Yawn!! ZZzzz
It’s another Paranormal Activity.. Nuff said
LOL “The Devil Inside” is probably THE comedy movie of 2012 – an unintentionally hilarious exorcist-ploitation / mockumentary flick, impossible to be taken seriously. I laughed my ass off
It starts out pretty good: the crime scene opening montage is incredibly tense, the whole thing with the exorcism school is somewhat interesting, the scene where Isabella visits her mother in the asylum is pretty creepy (great performance from Suzan Crowley) and Ferdinanda Andrade is quite a hottie.
But then after the first half hour the whole thing goes completely downhill: director Bell and script writer Matthew Peterman (both are also responsible for the lame “Stay Alive”) are completely incapable of creating anything original and wade knee-deep in boring and uncreative exorcism-clichÃ
To be honest The devil inside is by far the best horror/documentary film ive seen in ages! And i love watching documentaries on demonic possession and i loved every minute of this movie.
I don’t even even wanna waste my time writing a long review for this poorly written/directed movie.
I HATE THIS MOVIE.
I enjoyed this movie. If you enjoy movies like paranormal activity and Blair Witch Project, you will probably like this.
It was good till the end. The movie seemed to just end and I was hoping for more with the girl.
I’m all up for a fun scare or two. I don’t care if it’s unoriginal, I don’t mind if maybe the acting isn’t the greatest, just as long as it’s at least enjoyable. This was just a trainwreck from the first reel to the last. Not scary, not interesting, and there’s not even a reason to care. It’s just such a flat movie with literally nothing going for it. Aside from some nice spews of blood here and there, it’s horrendous. I didn’t care for it at all.
Ok so yes this movie has problems with the ending but it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I had heard about the film before I saw it and saw during the last 40 min I sat in anxiety waiting for the movie to just stop instantly. But the movie didn’t stop at all the places that I thought it might. Then when it ended I thought well that was not so bad. Yes a URL is not an ending but it kinda did have and ending [SPOILER]“Its obvious that their was some sort of malevolent demon is attacking these people and in the end the driver of the car got possessed and crashed the car stoping them from saving the daughter.” [END SPOILER] Its not happy but it is an ending. So I think that The Devil Inside is a original scary exorcism film, and one of the scariest of recent years. Another thing that I liked about the movie is that its not another PG-13 possession movie. Its a hard R movie and its bloody. GIVE IT A CHANCE Like The Last Exorcism the ending has problem but despite that its a well made, entertaining, scary horror film. Not to mention MAYBE WELL GET SOME ANSWERS IN A SEQUEL…
Complete waste of movie theater time and money!!!!
I don’t get all the hate towards this film. I thought it was the best exorcisim movie since The Exorcist, don’t get me wrong now, this doesn’t even to begin to hold a candle to that classic but I’m just saying, look at what we’ve had to work with in the past few years with exorcism movies, its been pretty bad.Emily rose, garbage, the last exorcism, super garbage. I thought this movie was a straight get to the point movie with a pretty ballsy ending, which people seem not to like. Look , we’re never gonna replicate The Exorcist so I think this is the closest we are ever gonna get, sadly. Not a masterpiece, but definitely not as bad as people make it out to be.
It seems like very few exorcism movies are good, and this is not one of them.

Simply put “The Devil Inside” could be described as “The Blair Witch Project” meets “The Exorcist”. It’s also quite similar to “The Last Exorcism” which I previously reviewed. “The Devil Inside” was in theatres at the beginning of the year and took in a pretty impressive $33 million its first weekend.
The movie opens with a 911 call and a woman saying she has killed three people. This is Maria Rossi and the main question about her and about possession cases in general is that is she really possessed? or just mentally ill? Maria is taken into custody and is eventually sent to a mental hospital in Rome. We then pick up the story of her daughter Isabella, played by Fernanda Andrade, who has teamed up a documentary film crew as she is about to visit her mother for the first time. Luckily Isabella and the whole cast for that matter are all attractive and easy to look at (since this is a “real” documentary and all). It’s also a great coincidence that everybody in Italy speaks English and is easy to talk to (just sayin’). Isabella does visit the very real Exorcism School at the Vatican and meet up with a few young priests who help them along the way. Also the idea of multiple possessions and of demonic transference is brought up and plays a part later on.
All minor annoyances aside this really is a pretty frightening movie. The acting is pretty incredible, starting with Maria (Suzan Crowley) whose plays crazy and possessed like she is actually crazy and possessed. Rosa (contortionist Bonnie Morgan) has short scene that is the stuff of nightmares, but with a dash of humanity. Despite what she has been through in her life Isabella is pretty well adjusted and lives a normal life.
Isabella and the group perform a sort of unsanctioned exorcism on Maria at the mental hospital and things get pretty intense. Something happens that makes this exorcism movie unique. I won’t spoil it but it makes for a interesting third act. Personally I think the ending is pretty awesome, but a lot of people hate it. Since this is a found footage type movie you’d expect this type of ending. Its abrupt, ambiguous are leaves a lot of questions. What happened next? More than likely with the amount of money it took in a sequel can’t be far behind. “The Devil Inside” is now available on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download so give it a shot.
“The Devil Inside” Needs to be Unleashed.
