I thought this movie was amazing! The pacing, story, everything was great. I highly recommend this movie.
As usual, I disagree with the critic at blood-disgusting. This movie was great, very entertaining. Sit back, have some popcorn, and enjoy!
This movie was pretty solid not going to lie, i can actually see this happening thats the scary thing. Pretty cool how it all comes into play. Acting was pretty good. Serkis took the show, his motion cap was so damn good. I loved the weta effects too. IDK if I will see it again or buy it but it was deft a good watch.
Dragged on abit.Overall was petty good and tend to agree with fleasheater this happening.Effects were awesome
Who is David Harley? If BD gave it a bad review, more than likely it’s a good movie!
Sorry Bloody-Discusting..but you guys are wrong on this movie..it’s awesome..
I absolutely LOVED this film! Best Apes movies since the original. Fantastic plot, excellent pacing, heart-rending characterization, beautifully shot & edited! This movie will reboot the Apes franchise… Guaranteed. Bravo, and THANK YOU!
I loved this movie! Its so well put together and the plot is awesome. The way the story is told you actually start to care for the apes. Its like the perfect blend of action, comedy, and drama. It my attention he entire time and I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait for a sequal I will be first in line with ticket in hand.
I’m glad to see users have more taste and intelligence than Harley whose official review sadly stains this website.
RotPotA was steallar. The CGI was absolutely amazing, the story intelligent and credible, the acting and directing fabulous.
The movie was a bit of a slow burn, but one at a deliberate and constantly accelerating pace, leading up to an amazing finale. For a reboot of the franchise, RotPotA takes all the right steps.
9.5/10
This movie beat all expectations, and was easily my favorite movie of the summer. They did a great job evoking various emotions from human and ape both…this movie actually made me feel something, and in most summer films these days which are nothing but visual spectacle, it’s a rarity! I suggest viewing this as more of a reboot than a prequel to anything that’s come before, as some of the dots don’t quite connect with the classic series…but I had no problem with that. My only issue was some of the shoddy CGI used early in the film, mostly to portray Ceaser as a baby. But in contrast, the adult apes looked amazingly realistic, and they really nailed it with their intelligent facial expressions. Not a horror film, and not even a summer action spectacle…it’s just a damn good, well made, thought provoking, emotion stirring good time.
This movie is great. David Harley is a lame ass. Bloody-Disgusting is well-known for their terrible reviews.
I read BD’s review before seeing the film, so my expectations were low and I expected a shallow, poorly developed script. Luckily, my investment of the ticket price was proven to be well worth it, and my popcorn was forgotten within the first few minutes of the film.
Yes, the CGI is very impressive but, as should be the case, you frequently forget that it IS CGI as you become involved in the story and become wowed by the scenes. Oh, and Lithgow is awesome, as always!
I’m saddened that it seems to have become the trend to poorly review any film that has certain characteristics, or a combination of them: A) Made in the USA. B) Is not independent. C) Has a budget. D) Might have mass appeal.
Great movie. Wtf is BD thinking??
This movie is extremely well done. This first half of the movie is not a waste at BD puts it, it gives you a reason to care about its characters. The performance by Andy Serkis is amazing and the third act of the film will simply leave you wanting more. The movie is great on it’s own with little nods to the original but it creates a world that I would not mind visiting again.
I had zero expectations going into this and walked out very surprised. This is damn fine summer entertainment. I don’t get why people bitch about the human side of story (Franco’s character, the girlfriend etc) because this is Ceasers story. For a movie of this sort the human displays of emotion are satisfactory and this movie does contain a lot of emotional moments. That aside the title is pretty self explanatory, it’s the rise of the apes and not the rise of the humans. We get to see how he becomes the leader of his race and I thought it was done very well. You expect nothing but wall to wall action but instead it tells a damn good story with the action not kicking in until the end. The effects team deserve praise because the motion capture is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Ceaser is a an actual character who we feel for, then root for when the uprising begins. Don’t pay attention to the nitpickers, just sit back with a tub of popcorn and enjoy.
My favorite film of 2011, an absolutely amazing and breathtaking film, with some of the best cgi effects I’ve seen in ages!!! Being a huge Apes fan, this one delivered everything I was hoping for and then some!!!
Once again BD shows that I can’t listen to them anymore about movies because this was I think the best movie of the summer and I loved it. The whole story was amazing and Andy Serkis did an awesome job. The special effects were great and it was a very fun movie. You have to check this out if your a fan of the movies or not.
why does BD even rate that film? typical hollywood movie, not a horror film. besides that, I mostly agree with David Harley on this one!
story/characters didn’t reach me, just another shallow hollywood movie.
before I went out to see the apes, I saw two other movies today (“3:10 to yuma” and “super”) these films are absolutely brilliant when it comes to storytelling and character development, so maybe my expectations were too high afterwards!
5 out of 10
typical Hollywood crap. bad story, bad cg, franco still sucks as an actor. totally predictable. andy serkis should be put inside a cage for a couple years. don’t watch this, not worth it.
Great effects, fun story and last time I checked James Franco was one of the truely talented actors in the buiz. I loved it for what it was, a fun popcorn film with CGI apes. I did expect a bit more out of it, but besides that, I was well along for the ride the entire time. Definitely catch it in theaters.
Holy Gorilla, what was that? Seriously, this is not only the biggest surprise of 2011 so far, this is also IMHO the best Ape-film since Franklin J. Schaffer’s 1968 masterpiece.
Nearly everything about “Rise” is close to perfection, especially Rupert Wyatt’s sharp and rousing direction, and the stunning script from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (which btw is full of glorious nods to the original saga). The movie is tense and thrilling from beginning to end, including a few amazingly suspenseful scenes and an outstanding climax.
We get to see a few great acting performances from James Franco (this guy gets better and better!), Freida Pinto (what a beauty!) and John Lithgow (always a pleasure to see this brilliant actor).
Camera work and editing are simply excellent, the soundtrack is highly effective and the CGI… well, I’d say this is the best and most believable-looking CGI I have seen since Avatar.
Every single ape looks absolutely fantastic. They’re also extremely sympathetic and likeable, due to the fact that the filmmakers gave everyone of them a certain personality.
Fuck you Tim Burton, fuck you. This is how you do an Apes-flick without ruining the franchise or making fans angry.
HUGE kudos to everyone who was involved in the making of this film!
way better than I expected. great film. I loved how it explained the origins and had a build up to what was to come. had a good STORY line along with great FX.
Good film. The effects were not too over the top and the apes looked very good. I was bummed when I heard James Franco was in this but he surprisingly wasn’t terrible. I did expect a bit more to happen at the end. Overall I liked it and would see it again.
I actually really enjoyed this movie. It was interesting, poignant and exciting.
went to see this film with a girl i know she’s got a bit of a monkey face.
i have seen pretty much all of the POTA shows and was interested in this film. The last thing apart from Heston walking across the beach “you bastards!” was Cornelius and family getting murdered on the cargo boat, thats where i picked it up from….. anyway, this is the origin of the story,no? I like the cast but the script did’nt really ask them for much, Sekitas was good as the monkey how i’ll never know. i thought it was a basic story with basic sfx but clear and easy to understand with enough action to keep me eating popcorn and enthralled. i guess this spawns more monkey ass films with primates taking over the world hold on i know what happens, axe men do a show in the jungle and they have a war where the gorillas make lots of money from smoking ciggarettes and saying “god damn thats bullshit where’s ma lunch box i’m going back to my cage”.
No bad… not good… just ok…
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is a good summer flick. The CGI was great and the acting was really good also. I think I hyped it up to be this epic film with intense action sequences and it really wasn’t but thinking about it now, I’m glad it wasn’t. The action that was there though was pretty awesome. All In All, Rise is great summer fun.
The CG looked like it was the star of the film. Those apes and chimps looked pretty real to me. It reminds me how the Republicans and the Tea Party would like to take over this country sans the brain enhancing formula. Ceasar is home and so am I. Bring on the sequel. Maybe they can come up with a solution to the economy that we could use.
Damn BD, you seem to be really far off the mark with your reviews lately. Rise was a stellar popcorn flick, highly recommended.
Great review. Not.
Well, if were judging this as a horror movie then, it doesn’t even register. But you cannot deny the emotional ties this movie has in the early parts of the film. It’s not vicious, in fact, it’s more family oriented with its moments of darkness. I never felt bored but never jumped out of my seat in excitement either. Look forward to the next one, as the ending leaves plenty open (Big Surprise!).
Really enjoyed this film, amazing acting from the guy who played Ceaser. never cared about this film series, but this film was great
