It’s mainly a “Been There, Done That” feel in the beginning, but the twist at the end put that feeling to rest. I liked it a lot.
7.5 out of 10
The Task is one of those movies where it is easy to think about the things they didn’t do in it. Everything from the intro, setting and premise were promising and entertaining. The casting wasn’t too terrible, smart girl aside and the pacing was where it needed to be.
The Task takes on the premise of random people who take part in a reality show in an abandoned, but haunted, prison. The characters are tasked with a serious of creepy challenges that require them to descend into various spots of the dark prison and conquer their fears.
If this sounds familiar, it is because they used to have a show on MTV called FEAR that was an extremely similar reality show. In fact, this one is more just a dramatized version wrapped in a horror film. I cannot discuss much more of the plot, without spoiling things sadly.
What is on offer isn’t too bad and it will likely entertain. I cannot help thinking that a slightly better budget, a longer run-time and some reworking of the script might have helped this be more entertaining.
I must commend the choice of setting, as abandoned prisons are instantly creepy/scary for any film. I also found the camera work, particularly the use of light inside the darkness and keeping things slightly out of focus did help lend to the menacing air of the whole thing.
Certainly the Task was one of the better After Dark Originals released this year and one worthy of at least a rental.
Boring is the word that comes to mind, along with waste of time and why waste film on this garbage. Couldn’t finish it as I felt my life was slowly slipping away wasting my time watching this.
The Task was a fairly decent B movie, and probably one of the better ones Ive watched recently. Although Im not suggesting this is by any means a good horror film it does have some gore and at times trys to be scary. This is one of a string of movies being released by the After Dark film company which also has made Fertile Ground, Prowl and Husk.
The general plot is that a group of people are chosen to appear on a Big Brother like reality show which is set in a “haunted” prison and for them to each win $20000 they must spend the night in the prison and face whatever creepyness is in store for them.
Overall wasnt a bad film and it so easily could have been a lot better but it passed the time alright.
5 out of 10 – worth a watch
this was a lame movie infact the only scary thing about this movie that it was made.
This is quite possibly the worst movie yet to come from the obviously defunct, if it’s still got a pulse can we please put it out its misery, After Dark Films/8 Films to Die For/After Dark Originals house. I used to TRAVEL to see the 8 FtDF festival! What a huge waste of potential. Somebody, please make them STOP…!
A plot that’s been used a bit too often as of late. A fun twist at the end was not enough to save it though.
Youv’e seen this kind of movie a hundred times and they just keep getting worse. Not a very good movie at because it’s so damn boring and nothing really happens. Please pass this one up.
“The Task” is a cool and entertaining little low-budget horror flick, best described as a mix of “April Fool’s Day”, “Saw”, “Witchtrap” and the legendary MTV reality-show “Fear”. Despite lots of negative reviews and my low expectations, I ended up surprisingly satisfied.
Ok, the script is quite a mess, the pacing is weak, there’s hardly any gore and the main villain looks far too tame and unscary – but aside from that, I really, really enjoyed it.
It’s witty and diverting, but also incredibly atmospheric, thrilling and scary. The scenes in the chapel and in the gas chamber creeped the shit out of me! Camera work and editing are terrific, we get to see a few well made split screen sequences and some black-and-white footage, many of the settings look quite haunting and the eerie soundtrack is highly effective.
Highlights – an excellent and completely unpredictable twist ending, many really likable characters (especially Texas Battle as Dixon and Marc Pickering as Randall) and a bunch of hilarious one-liners:
“My favorite book is OK Magazine.” / “I have the IQ of Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Put together. / “You know, people used to say I look like Will Smith. Now they say Barack Obama… okay!”
Call me nuts, but I really like this movie. It’s not perfect but it passes the time pleasantly!
