A terribly disappointing and quite unnecessary sequel that has “cash-in” and “rushed” written all over it. At least, it’s still quite enjoyable.
Pros:
Great acting from Price, Jeffrey and John Cater. A few brilliant-looking settings, a terrific soundtrack, loads of funny dialogue and a few gruesome and excellent kills (death by giant press-screw, death by scorpions etc.).
Cons:
The plot completely sucks, the script is devoid of any logic, Fuest’s direction is fairly mediocre, it’s full of dull and boring moments and Robert Quarry’s performance is just horrible.
Pity. This could have really great better with a better script and more time on Fuest’s hands.
Charming and fun. The lines the police deliver are priceless!
When the moon rises 3 years after he entombed himself along with his beloved wife Victoria. Phibes awakens to find his house demolished and his secret papyrus stolen by his arch nemesis Biderbeck (Robert Quarry). Once again enlisting the aid of his trusty assistant Vulnavia phibes set’s out to recover the papyrus and enact vengeance to whom ever gets in his way. He like Biderbeck journey to Egypt to find the river of life so Phibes may bring his wife and himself eternal life. Standing in his way is Biderbeck.
My only fault with this film, is in it’s predecessor The Abominable Dr. Phibes. It it Phibes had a motive to kill, in this one he simply kills for the fun of it. Granted the murders are ingenious. One is crushed slowly to death and another is stung to death by scorpions just to name a few. But the acting of Price and the art-deco sets are great as usual. I just wish that the score had the original “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” sung by Price at the end!
