“will unhinge even the hardest genre fan”
Maybe if “unhinge” means , to bore, or , to endues laughter, or maybe to waste ones hard earned cash!
Other then that , this movie is everything but good. Or even just ok
Was gonna give it a 3 for acting, but I actually couldn’t understand them half the time so it gets a 2
Not even worth the words.
In defense of this film, it’s definitely a different horror flick than most, and from what most are expecting. To be simple and swift about it, this movie has great performances. However, I would have to say that this movie is one of style over substance. The story itself is nothing really complex, and much answers are not given. The style and technics of it all are incredibly effective though. Perfect ominous music, editing, sound effects, and cinematography are what make this movie disturbing and chilling. It also does have it’s great share of brutal violence and an ending that might seem unfulfilling to some, but as a whole, the film works. Just do not go in expecting a slasher film with everything answered simply, instead prepare yourself for a trip into the feeling of the darkness these characters further descend into even when you think they can’t possibly get any more darker.
I am just shaken by this horrifyingly brutal film that has so many nightmarish scenes that it will definitely keep you up at night in shock. To be honest I’m still scratching my head on figuring out what all of it as a whole really means and what the connections are and all I can think of now is that he was somehow unknowingly or knowingly initiated into some kind of satanic cult but it’s the type of film that needs multiple viewings to understand the meaning which are the type of films I don’t care for but this one takes it to a whole new level of shock and disbelief that it will stick with you long after you watch it. The acting was powerful and probably the best I’ve seen in a thriller or horror movie in 2011 and it made it all the more effective and disturbing and speaking of disturbing the violence in this is not for the weak of heart or the squeamish as it gets very graphic and unrelenting at times but its strongest goal is to keep you in suspense and fear the unknown. This movie may start as a hitman movie but it soon spirals down deeper and deeper into brooding territory bringing shivers down your spine and never lets up and it might not be a particularly scarefest but the images alone in this film will give you nightmares. Overall the ending is hard to swallow and is probably the most devastating and messed up ending in the genre since probably The Mist and it’s just abrupt but it’s really in a league of its own and for that it’s memorable but it’s not for everyone and it’s not really an rewarding film per say but it’s something that is different and kind of makes its own rules and I give it credit for being bold and grisly unappologetically and the director is certainly one to look out for but have low expectations and an open mind before watching because yes it’s a tad overrated but it’s one trippy, intense, shattering, chilling ride that you wont soon forget. Get ready to get disturbed! Rental.
Well, as most of the reviews on here are by Americans, that figures…
Yeah the movie isn’t a gorefest and it doesn’t have gratuitous kills, but it is genuinely frightening.
Anyone who can’t empathise with the characters must have a uneventful life, as their home situations are entirely believable.
I would advise people to watch it for themselves. Given the number of brainless tools who post reviews on here (I haven’t posted before but was moved to write one after reading some of the negative feedback on here) then of course they won’t like it.
Go rent Hostel 3 and watch your crappy SFX demos, what are you all, 14 years old?
If Martyrs was your kind of scare, then you’ll love this.
I finally watched this movie last night ad I’m not completely disappointed. The movie was actually brilliant until the last 5 minutes. The movie is constantly unsettling, filmed beautifully, acted superbly, and escalates just the way I was hoping. My biggest complaint is that I was really hoping to was going further. I was really starting to expect a much more epic ending (to me it really felt like this was going to touch on the devil ala Lost Souls). But unfortunately the ending amounted to almost nothing. I don’t need big explanations in my horror movies (I love ambiguity and things left up to my imagination). This movie just didn’t give you enough for that post-film speculation. Instead the ending felt tacked on without much thought. I’m not going to give it away, but it felt ripped out of another (more amazing film) as they simply just don’t the ending the time and care it needed.
Those are just my thoughts. The film was still excellent and I was completely enthralled for the majority of it. Great job.
My expectations were high after seeing the impressive trailer and reading many positive reviews – unfortunately I ended up pretty disappointed. “Kill List” is a weird and underwhelming Scottish artsy-fartsy horror flick that fails to fulfill any expectations.
Pros:
The whole movie looks absolutely outstanding, thanks to Laurie Rose’s excellent cinematography and an awesome of choice of eerie and unsettling film locations. The cast is great (standouts: Michael Smiley and MyAnna Buring), the dialogue is witty and very well written, the dark soundtrack is highly effective and the kills are all disturbingly violent.
Cons:
Ben Wheatley & Amy Jump’s script is one of the worst things ever brought to the screen, incl. an annoyingly high amount of unanswered questions, unnecessary scenes and pointless plot points, hardly any tension or suspense, and one of the ABSOLUTE WORST endings in film history.
Seriously, the illogical and superfluous mish-mash climax which consists of elements from “Wicker Man”, “Serbian Film” & “Last Exorcism” is soooo fuckin’ stupid, it’s frustrating.
If you wanna see a good contemporary horror film from Scotland, I suggest to watch “Outcast” instead, no masterpiece but at least not as disappointing as “Kill List”.

I went into this film without seeing the trailer, as I try to do with most films. I was glued the entire time, if for no other reason than to try and understand what they were saying, but this was a great hit man film – maybe one of the best Ive watched – and the horror angle (and omfg ending) left me feeling disturbed and thinking about how “what happened” happened at the end of the film at the grocery store a couple of hours later. I totally stand by this choice as BD’s best horror film of the year 2011, as picked by Brad.
I guess most of the reviewers here haven’t seen A Serbian Film. This film is almost exact in replicating that film. Same story, different professions. I was shoot beautifully and the acting is great, but it is a reboot. And to PonyOneMoreno I love Martyrs but this film is not on that level of greatness. Watch A serbian Film and then see if you disagree.
It’s a well-made movie, but I have to agree with manifesto – Kill List’s “drama” is nearly identical to A Serbian Film. Also, oddly, the score is quite similar; jarring, scratchy, experimental electro-synth mixed with single note instruments.
Don’t get me wrong, it was definitely worth a watch and I enjoyed the film, but I was expecting more from Mr. Disgusting’s #1 Horror Film of 2011.
This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. Complete crap! Don’t even waste 1 second viewing it. The storyline is so utterly boring and doesn’t make any sense, the cast can’t act and the filming is so poor. The whole thing was pointless and an absolute waste of money to make. I can’t believe I sat and watched the sorry 2.5 hours thinking/hoping there was going to be some point…. but no, the end was just as crap as the rest of the film. 100% CRAP.
Cannot believe I wasted ten dollars on this junk. I normally don’t mind a “slow burn” in fact I kind of enjoy it (see “The Innkeepers”) but this has not intriguing at all. I was not at all interested in these characters or the story (which if done right, could have been great). And the ending was terrible, it felt like a cheap, half- assed attempt at recreating the depressive conclusion of “A Serbian Film”. While it was not super long, clocking in at something around 1hr45min, it felt like forever. I actually had to shut it off and come back to it… twice!
Disappointing. The characters were pretty good and the buildup was pretty good, but the ending ruined it. I’m sure its been said a million times before, but it was a complete ripoff of A Serbian Film’s ending, which wasn’t a very good movie either.

Movie has been overhyped by this site… but it’s still undoubtedly very good. See it without reading too many reviews and you will thank me afterward.
Get the fuck out of here.
Best movie of 2011 by a far.
How can this movie be a rip off of a serbian film when Ben Wheatley has never even seen it and this film was probably being thought out/written before serbian film was even released.
I’m sory but your going to put people off watching a great film by comparing it to vulgar crap.
Great movie, good twist at the end. This is not really a horror movie but a thriller. Worth a watch!
This film definitely warrants a second viewing to take it all in. I watched this before watching “A Serbian Film” and I don’t get why so many people are comparing the two films. I get that the ending is similar, but in “A Serbian Film” the ending was more for shock value. In Kill List the ending really cemented the story of the main character, and this movie was most likely already written before A Serbian Film was out.
This was a very unsettling slow paced movie but still kept me entertained. I wish this movie was subtitled though. It was hard understanding what the actors were saying most of the time. Overall this movie does not live up to the hype but its still worth a watch.
Overrated, doesnt turn into anything like a horror film until the last 15-20 minutes, which is suspensful and well made, however the the first hour is a dull assassin film that is almost a completely different film than the last portion, its too disconnected from each other to work as a complete film.
It’s become apparent over the last few years that Robin Hardys “The Wickerman” has had a profound influence on modern horror cinema. Two recent releases from the British isles “Wake Wood” and “Kill List” proudly and unabashedly wear their “Wickerman” influences on their sleeves. I took a look at “Wake Wood” recently (Wake Wood (2011) ). I found it intriguing, if not a little paint by numbers. The second of these films “Kill List” is much more difficult to categorize.

The hype was not worth the payoff. The end did in no way ‘unhinge’ me. The whole movie was disappointing and the ending seemed more or less pointless. So many rave reviews for this movie and it really is nothing special.
A brutal, uncompromising film that takes a while to get rolling; but once it does it’s a powerhouse. Believe the hype, this explosive entry into British horror is jarring and thrilling.
Again, these are the kind of films we need… I have read that this film has been disappointing due to its comparisons drawn toward A Serbian Film, however, despite its similar concepts and production values (which are extremely well done in both films) the feel of the films are obviously different as this film was much more of a slow burner in my opinion. The gore effects in this film is extremely well done (the shot of a cut palm bleeding into a sink) are great examples of well executed visual effects production. With the inclusion of some haunting Kubrik’esque cinematography and perfectly chosen sound design and score… This film easily goes in my top of 2012 already… don’t listen to the naysayers… if your a fan of extreme horror/gore films, this is right up your alley!
Commentoooh lolly. Not sure what happened there, but it worked for me. This film is not for everyone. Its a slow burner that becomes increasingly surreal and bizarre. Its beautifully shot and the characters are given lots of room to breathe. I will watch more of his work.
Would’ve given this 2.5 but it won’t let me. Not sure what the hype is. I love ambiguity, but there has to be some tying together at least some of the ambiguity. What’s the symbol? Why do the priest and the librarian say “Thank you” as he’s killing them? Who are the people at the end? I actually preferred where the movie was going when it was a simple killer film then it takes this utterly ridiculous turn into some occult thing that makes no sense with the rest of the movie other than the symbol. Certainly wasn’t unhinged and I’m pretty damned hardened. Not bad just not good.

I made a point of not knowing anything about Kill List before I watched it. Well, obviously I’d heard about it and knew it was about a hit-man, and I assumed that the symbol on the front cover was about a cult or something, but other than that I knew nothing. I didn’t watch the trailer and I didn’t read the back of the DVD because a few people had suggested that the film would be best if you knew nothing about it beforehand. Rather like The Ordeal and The Cabin in the Woods, both are incredible films on first viewing (and on repeated). I’m glad I did. I’ll try not to spoil anything in this review, but I’d recommend that you don’t read this one or any other. All you need to know is that I’m going to be raving about it!
For me, Kill List is on par with French horror in its visual style and disturbing unfolding. If you don’t know, I’m a French horror nut! Inside and Martyrs happen to be my favourite horror films of all time, and I’d highly recommend them (and many more!) if you you’re a French horror virgin. Kill List just has the amount of balls that French horror has and isn’t afraid to go to very dark places. What’s great about the film is that it’s a horror film disguised as a thriller which makes the ending ten times more impactive and disturbing than it already is. But more on the ending later.
Kill List gripped me from the moment it started with the creepy cult symbol dominating the opening credits. Although for the majority of the film it plays out in typical thriller fashion, the unnerving edits and atonal music lets you know that something is not right. It’s a suspense which carries the film to a phenomenal level and creates a oppressive atmosphere throughout. We’re immediately introduced to the main characters, a devoted father, his wife and his friend, as well as his friend’s dodgy new girlfriend. I really liked the characters, and they’re developed beautifully as the film progresses, as we realise that these people aren’t your conventional heroes in the slightest.
The characters felt very human and real. The man and his wife have a somewhat fiery relationship and are clearly strapped for cash. Luckily the man’s friend happens to be a hit-man and an old man is offering a lot of cash for three targets, so they accept. From then on the film unfolds in an exceptionally gripping manner as we see the duo carry out their complicated kill list. It’s done in a very realistic manner with a hand-held camera narrating much of the atmospheric story. There’s a great section where the man’s friend (Gal, I think he’s called?) waits in the car for his friend to carry out a hit, but Gal gets worried after his gone for some time, so he gets out and the camera follows him all in one suspenseful and gripping shot so we can see the horror in the rawest fashion.
Of course this isn’t your typical hit-man movie, although it is the most gripping one I’ve seen. The targets are unusual and a title card flashes up on the screen for each one which I loved as it shows them as labels to kill, not humans. The killers are shown as more human than the victims and the duos fiery relationship only serves to increase the tension. There’s a sense of unease with every kill, each is carried out in the most brutal and realistic fashion and certainly does not glamorise violence. There’s also a feeling that not all is what it seems throughout the film and the final third certainly reveals that.
The final half an hour or so is incredibly gripping with an ending that is genuinely frightening. The film takes a surprising and incredibly interesting turn which no one could see coming. There’s even a thrilling chase sequence which echoes the claustrophobic panic of REC and The Descent. It’s the final moments of Kill List which makes the film truly brilliant. It’s stupendously creepy and is horror that will resonate with you for days. I literally gasped in shock and sat there stunned and jaw-dropped throughout the credits. It’s powerful stuff which requires you to think and really creeped me out. Those final moments of Kill List will never leave me. Unless I get amnesia or something.
Kill List is one of the best British horror films I’ve seen. It did unhinge me and I was gripped throughout its tight running time. Kill List is true horror with great acting and a twisting screenplay which kept me on my toes. The directing also blew me away with some terrific slow-motion shots and hand-held camera which only added to the realism as it often felt more like a documentary than a film. I can’t sing enough praises for it, although it will fly over many people’s heads (which is clearly evident). To me and everyone else it will remain as one of the best horror films of the decade! Go Kill List!
I watched this because everybody made such a big deal about the ending and the big shocking twist. Truth is, any horror fan should have seen the ending coming a mile away. This movie borrows heavily from Rosemary’s Baby, The Wicker Man, and even Angel Heart. Not a bad flick though, and good for a once-view. Maybe subtitles wouldn’t have been a bad idea.
