Best & Worst ’10: MICAH’S BOTTOM 5 OF 2010

Not every film released to direct-to-disc can be a winner. This list contains five such disc only releases from 2010. I attempted to not pick on the little guys (too much) and instead took a look at some of the larger disc release disappointments of the year. Luckily or unluckily depending on your outlook, it wasn’t hard to come up with a list of failures. Check ‘em out below. While this list is only DVD releases I would feel guilty if I didn’t at least mention widely released Legion in this intro. So I will. Legion. You suck. (more…) READ MORE

Best & Worst ’10: MICAH’S TOP 10 OF 2010

Since I watch an ungodly amount of horror (around 275 films viewed and reviewed so far in 2010), the bulk of which is DVD/Blu-rays, I opted to put together a list of the best films that had disc releases this year. What that means is you won’t see any films on this list that had a wide release (The Crazies, NOES) or didn’t have a disc release at all (Hatchet II), but you will see several films that had releases in other countries, appeared in festivals or limited engagements AND had a 2010 U.S. disc release. Timur Bekmambetov’s Epic Adventure Into ‘Red Asphalt’

Has Russian director Timur Bekmambetov bitten off more than he can chew? The short answer is yes, but who cares? The FX madman is attached to so many badass projects it’s going to be hard to throw a foul ball. The director of Wanted, Night Watch and Day Watch is currently lined up to potentially get behind the camera for Moby Dick, Wanted 2 and The Witch Hunter, while he’s also producing The Darkest Hour and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter alongside Tim Burton. To add more to that pile, the LA Times is reporting that he’s seriously considering Red Asphalt, a screenplay acquired by Lionsgate penned by Andrew Baldwin, who, a quick scan of the 2008 Black List shows, wrote a Depression-era drama titled The West Is Dead. Unfortunately, no details are available (welcome to the norm), although it’s said to be another 3-D project. Whoopie! (more…) READ MORE

‘Cryptid’ Asks, “If They Don’t Exist, Why Is Everyone Dying?”

Bloody Disgusting has learned that The Last Horror Movie director Julian Richards is back behind the camera for a new indie thriller, Cryptid, which asks, “If it doesn’t exist, why is everyone dying?” Penned by Monica Hilborn (The Guardian, Amphibian), inside you’ll find the full synopsis and sales art. Watch for casting as soon as it comes in. (more…) READ MORE

25 of the Decade’s Most Influential Figures in Horror

While there were far too many influential figures in the horror genre this decade to include them all here, below are the 25 that were (arguably, of course) its greatest movers and shakers. From the video game revolution to sequel-happy movie studios; from the dark world of metal to the pages and panels of horror literature, love ‘em or hate ‘em the below 25 simply made too much noise to ignore. If you think we missed anything, throw it in the comment section below and say your piece. It’s all welcome! (more…) READ MORE
