after the first act, the movie becomes…lame. i didn’t mind the Norwegian fairy-tale stuff, but the exposition is just SO bland. i was close to turning it off but the amazing camera work and impressive low-budget special effects kept me enticed. watch it if you want to see some freakin’ awesome first-person directing, but don’t expect a “Norwegian masterpiece with a new twist on the monster genre.” it’s the same ol’ formula, just with trolls.

I’ll give it a 7 just because I don’t want to meet any angry trolls.

So much fun to see on a big screen. Felt like you were along with the film crew, hunting trolls in the mountains. The big bastard at the end is just sick! Loved it. Absolute must see – without a doubt one of the top 10 best horror films of the year.

I thought it was very good. It is your typical found footage film but with trolls. Very entertaining and I enjoyed it very much. I wish I would have saw it in theaters but where I live we have a shitty selection of movies. I couldn’t wait so watched it on the computer. Check this one out, but I saw wait to see it in theaters.

André Øvredal’s Troll Hunter (completed last year ) is finally premiering at this month’s Sundance Film Festival. A North American DVD and Blu-ray release should follow shortly. Thank goodness. Now, maybe fewer people will look at me like I’ve gone insane as i explain to them how completely fucking awesome Troll Hunter is . “Really?” they ask skeptically, “Troll Hunter? How good could that be? I’ve never heard of it.” . Let me explain.

Troll Hunter is Monster-cinéma vérité, a faux documentary that stands tall next to better known contemporaries like Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project. Unlike its grim American counterparts, though, Troll Hunter is a fun, inviting and exhilarating experience

A small group of Norwegian filmmakers set out to investigate the cause of some mysterious local bear deaths. The crew follow a strange man who slowly reveals himself as a Troll Hunter. As silly as this sounds, (and it is silly) what we are about to see will force us to take this revelation very seriously. Any doubts we may have about investing ourselves in this story are assuaged when we start to see some Trolls. The Trolls are magnificent, and remind me more of classic fairy tales (Some are skinny, some have 3 heads) than the perpetually angry, frothing and frightening creatures seen in the Lord Of The Rings films. The computer-generated special effects are very convincing, are used sparingly, and are usually shown in “night vision”. We don’t see too many Trolls… just enough for our imagination to extrapolate an extensive community of monsters. The film provides a fascinating diet of lore and fleeting Troll sightings, as the hunter leads the film crew on a trek through Norway’s countryside and mythology.

Troll Hunter is my favorite film of 2010, and an upcoming domestic release means you will have no excuse for it not to be yours.

“Look at them, troll mother said. Look at my sons! You won’t find more beautiful trolls on this side of the moon.” (1915) by John Bauer

p.s. – If you are Christian, stay away from Trolls. They can smell your blood, and are none too pleased about your people driving them into the hills and mountains. They intend to prove themselves just as frightening as the Demons you’ve replace them with.

The Blair Witch Project and Jurassic Park just had a Norwegian speaking baby boy – Troll Hunter! That’s one way of describing this movie.
No, but in all seriousness Troll Hunter is awesome. A movie that manages to be scary at times, funny at times, yet entertaining all the time. The special effects are very convincing and makes the trolls look real.
About half an hour into watching the movie I found myself thinking “This is already better than Cloverfield!”
That’s saying much cause I really enjoyed Cloverfield.

A clever twist to the whole “mockumentary” style of films that have been coming out lately. What if we learned that Trolls DO exist, and there’s only one man keeping all of those trolls in line? Quite entertaining from start to finish, mixing comedy with sci-fi and fantasy. Go see this movie. More information here:

The Troll Hunter, put simply, is one of the coolest films that I have seen in years. What on the surface appears to be yet another “found footage” style film, is in reality one of the best creature features since Jurassic Park or Cloverfield.

The setup is simple enough, a group of college students are making a film about a strange bear poacher who appears to be killing bears and leaving them out in the open. When they follow this hunter out into the woods one night, they learn first hand that sometimes there are things that go bump in the night, as they come face to face with an actual troll.

The way the story of the trolls, their behavior, how they die, even down to the paperwork that the hunter needs to fill out is solid. It lends a believable and yet fun, slightly quirky air to the movie. This is less a horror film and more of an animal-in-nature movie and it works so well because of the serious manner in which it is presented, even when the characters are told seemingly ridiculous things to their faces.

The way the Trolls appear on screen was just phenomenally well done and the amount of overt cgi was very small. It really does make you feel as though these trolls are real and that they are among us.

Overall, I was very entertained by this movie. I almost wish they would make a sequel or even a shot-for-shot remake for American audiences, who will likely be too lazy to sit through subtitles. It is worth owning and I have no doubt that I will view again and again until they come out with something as entertaining and original.

Although unique in premiss and well-made, TrollHunter is populated by characters I just don’t care about and driven by a story with no real teeth. The result, is a showcase of cool effects, but ultimately a dull slog of a film dominated by driving landscape shots and lacking any real emotional resonance.

André Övredal’s highly praised “Trollhunter” is an extremely original found-footage mockumentary about a government-hired ‘Trollhunter’ who hunts and kills Trolls that stray from their territories – noting that the Trolls are no small and nice fairy-tale figures, but actually they are super-large and violent carnivores.

The movie is an entertaining, thrilling and incredibly inventive monster-flick. The story is awesome and the script is packed with funny ideas, unexpected plot twists and witty dialogue lines.
The acting is cool and believable, especially Otto Jespersen as terrific ‘Trolljegeren Hans’. The editing is great, the camera work is very well done and the Norwegian landscapes are just amazingly beautiful.
Highlights: the outstanding-looking lower-budget CGI effects, the design of every single troll, the tense bridge-scene, the even more tense cave-scene and the grand finale.

Nevertheless, I couldn’t enjoy it as much as others did (many 10/10 reviews on Imdb, 82% on Rotten Tomatoes etc.) because there are some serious flaws that really annoyed me:
For the greater part, it is too predictable. I’ve seen my fair share of found-footage horror movies and they all pretty much use the same old Blair-Witch-formula (a few people filming something extraordinary – in the end they disappear and someone finds the footage) – and unfortunately, “Trollhunter” uses the same formula too.
Furthermore, there are some pacing problems in the middle, the balance between humour and seriousness often just didin’t work, the ending is disappointing and overall I think it could have been 15-20 minutes shorter.

So, final verdict: I’d say, it’s a pretty awesome Scandinavian horror/adventure-flick, but it’s definitely not the masterpiece that I expected.
I understand there’s currently a Trollhunter remake in the making – maybe this one will satisfy me more…?

Found-footage horror is beginning to show its age; as you may have saw if you watched “Paranormal Activity 2″ or “Apollo 18″. People are running out of ideas, and the independent filmmakers who originally started this trend are getting less attention than those who simply use the style as a gimmick for their “film”. We all want someone to just come along and completely blow our minds with something fresh, new, and scary. What’s that? You really, really want all three in one film? Then I’ve got a movie for you.

That movie is “The Troll Hunter”; a mocumentary-style horror flick that embraces undertones of action/adventure and even comedy. It succeeds because it has a sense of humor, which if you checked the status of horror cinema recently, is something that most films of its type are simply lacking. Sure, it isn’t the new “Blair Witch Project”, but it’s just as effective overall. It’s kind of a mess, but it works; and I had a really good time watching it, and these days, that’s more than enough for me. A lot of work went into the film, and a lot of quality came back out in return. This is the kind of film that you might watch over-and-over again, not because you love it, but simply because it’s interesting and unique in equal doses.

Take a look at the title, and you’ve got your basic plot right then and there. This film is indeed about a man who hunts trolls; but in order to do the film justice through a review, I believe I should delve deeper into what makes this man successful at his work. You aren’t called a “troll hunter” for nothing; you have to be skilled, I’d expect. But then again, I’ve never hunted trolls. None of us have. Perhaps some of the crazy bastards of Norway, where the film takes place, have tried it for themselves; and no doubt, this film may inspire some young people to go hunting in the woods for the ugly, towering beasts. Anyways, I’m getting distracted; ever-so-easily.

I said the film was a mockumentary, thus, there must be a crew filming every encounter and every event shown on-camera. I like this approach when it’s done right, and “The Troll Hunter” definitely has the feel of something worthwhile and creative. The trolls themselves are derived from Old Norwegian legends of the beings, which I liked. The film doesn’t give us too much insight, but it does have a nice satirical tone, which is where the film gets most of its big laughs from. The trolls are so important to this story that, to my surprise, they may just be more characterized than the actual humans are. Basically, your crew is made up of ignorant college kids; many of them whom I don’t care to name or mention that much, since they each lack a memorable personality; with the exception of the one Christian in the group, who, as you may know from trailers and advertisements, does his part to land his group in a pit of endless trouble.

The only character I can say I gave a damn about was the “troll hunter” himself; Hans. He’s played by the Norwegian comedian Otto Jespersen; who just-plain owns the role. He’s got a kick-ass beard, a simple but somehow memorable name, and pretty much the best job in the world. He truly gets some of the best scenes; a favorite of mine being where he shows the crew the paperwork that he must fill out every time he kills a troll. Moments like these are sure to amuse most members of the audience; but I also found them truly clever aside, since I do believe “amusing” and “clever” are two very different things.

Fairly low-budget and using a well-known cinematic technique, “The Troll Hunter” is actually some pretty good stuff as long as you’re willing to forgive it for its lack of intellectual characters (aside from ol’ Hans). The trolls actually look pretty good, considering this is indeed low-budget. The setting works fine and helps to make the film truly one-of-a-kind and you can’t help but enjoy it as far as escapist entertainment goes. I laughed, I cared about the film, and it was a fun time. Nothing fantastic, nothing great, nothing legendary; but most certainly something to talk about. I’d recommend it to fans of the horror genre, satire, and trolls alike. It’s silly, but admittedly so. It appears to have a smirk on its face throughout its entirety, which some people might be puzzled by on first sight. I however found it sort of admirable that a film would want to confuse and probably turn its back on an audience. Not everyone will find “The Troll Hunter” to their liking, but all-in-all, that’s the film’s choice. We need well-thought-up films such as this one. If they don’t exist, then we will begin to perish. So enjoy them, warts in all, while they last; and watch out, horror line-up of 2011. “The Troll Hunter” is here, and it’s coming to town to kick your ass. Fair warning.

I’ve never seen anything like this. Trollhunter takes the “found footage” scenario and expands everything about it. The acting was great, the scope was massive, the script was consistent. The trolls looked amazing. The story behind the trolls and why some explode or turn to stone from UV lights is really well thought out and elaborate. It’s also quite creepy at times. All In All, Trollhunter blends fantasy with found footage material really well. I highly recommend it.

If first person view is your thing than Troll Hunter is your movie. Although the movies cover gives away much of the movies build up for first glimpse at the trolls, you can’t help but be wrapped up in the film crews hunt for these giants. Some of the best digital renderings you will probably see
from a film going straight to the shelves.

Right away this movie caught my interest with it’s, at least to me, somehow different feel and take on the POV camera aspects. Normally I’m not a fan of this type of filming, but this one hardly bothered me as much as some have.

The story is very well done and original. It’s a different, refreshing concept to most horror and adventure films. I love the backstory they put behind the whole troll-hunting concept and the scenes of the troll encounters are very well done and look very cool.

I loved the Norwegian landscapes. Very beautiful and captivating. I adore environments in movies and games (as you can read in my other reviews.) So this also really brought my attention further.

Its a great all around movie with funny dialogue, good CGI effects and pretty decent acting. I may be the only one who does find it annoying that the USA always wants to remake good movies… ie attack the block, let the right one in, trollhunter but this isnt the place to complain.

Definetly a good film to see and even own. If you ever get a chance, dont miss out on seeing this good good film.

I don’t really know what I was expecting from Trollhunter, other than
trolls. I was even a bit worried at there being a lack of trolls on
screen, being it low-budget and hearing a few complaints, but
Trollhunter surpassed all expectations! It’s a delicious idea that’s
brought to life in an almost perfect manner. Who would think that a
film would actually make the tiniest part of you believe that trolls
exist! It’s a fascinating and unforgettable journey that had me
laughing from start to finish (that’s finish not Finnish as this film
    is Norwegian anyway).

Found footage can be incredible when it’s done right (see REC, Noroi:
The Curse) but can also be something of a let down (don’t see the Blair
Witch Project) thankfully Trollhunter does it right, and it does it
stupendously right! The camerwork isn’t annoying or sickening, but does
exactly as it is meant to do. It places you right into the often
awe-inspiring and hysterical action and really captures the scale and
adding a surprising edge of realism. I also felt more connected to the
characters, I was quite fond of them all by the end of it and I didn’t
    want anyone to die!

There’s a brilliant build-up at the start which isn’t annoyingly long
like in the Blair Witch Project. There’s a crushing sense of
anticipation when the first troll arrives and it certainly doesn’t
disappoint! It’s a mix of laughs, thrills and chills when you see a
troll. I found myself letting out a burst of laughter just at the
bizarre sights I was witnessing. You’ll certainly never see the sights
    that Trollhunter offers you again!

In addition the look of the trolls are actually quite impressive! I may
be biased because I saw it in blu-ray quality (no, I’m not some sort of
crazed rich man who seeks out every film I want to see in blu-ray
quality, it just happened to be cheaper than DVD, so get onto Amazon!)
but the trolls did look delightful. I was also impressed with the
variety of them all, whether it be three heads or 200 feet tall you’re
sure never to be bored whilst on the troll hunting scene!

I was also quite fascinated and interested when learning about the
mythology of trolls. It certainly makes a change from those samey David
Attenborough programs! It’s also clear that the writer has a genuine
passion for trolls (not something I thought I’d be writing today) and
his characters, and whilst Trollhunter is perhaps a little dialogue
heavy there’s plenty of tense and exciting troll moments, notably the
hilariously tense encounter in the mine and the absolutely thrilling
giant troll finale. The finale is everything you could want in a film
with the title Trollhunter! Some of the camera-work is just
awe-inspiring and really spectacular to see such a stupendous troll!
The whole film is worth watching, just for that moment.

With countless movies on vampires, werewolves, zombies and the sort. It
comes as a refreshing change to finally have trolls on our screens!
Trollhunter is a hugely fun and entertaining adventure. The originality
of the thing is just through the roof, and whilst it would’ve been a
treat to see more sights (I would’ve loved to have seen a battle
between a mountain troll and a woodland troll) you do feel extremely
satisfied by the end of it and raring to see it again! Who ever thought
it up is a genius and has created one of the best monster movies and
found footage movies to grace our screens. If you’ve got a sense of
humour and a sense of danger, stick Trollhunter into your DVD player!

Official Score: 4 / 5
