[BEST & WORST '12] David Harley’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2012!

2012 has been a snoozer of a year for horror for the most part. I can’t think of another year that I’ve been with the site when I’ve been more indifferent, bored, disappointed, and otherwise unamused by most of what I watched. Not like it should come as a huge shock to anyone that went to the theatre this year, but most of what I’ve included on my Worst Of list are studio films that feel like they were distributed and made by people who just don’t care. Marketing and brand loyalty made some of these movies money, not the actual quality of what was on screen – talk about depressing. READ MORE

[News Bites] ‘Catching Fire’ Casting, International Posters, & ‘The Exorcist’ Stage Play Gets Shields, McDowell & Teller FX!

The NY Post is writing that John Doyle’s “The Exorcist” stage play, which has been adapted from William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, begins performances next month at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. And while producers Ben Sprecher and Sonia Friedman are keeping a lid on expectations, they hear that if the reviews are good, the production will land on Broadway, possibly at the John Golden Theatre, in the fall. Teller, of Penn and Teller fame, is providing a few effects. A source who watched him practice a levitation scene says it’s “genuinely creepy.” Brooke Shields is playing Regan’s mother, and Richard Chamberlain is playing Father Merrin (Max von Sydow in the movie). Should the show move to Broadway, Shields will be coming with it. Chamberlain, however, will not. The producers have offered the role to Malcolm McDowell (Halloween, Clockwork Orange). READ MORE

Chernobyl Diaries, the Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Witten-produced horror survival film, opens in theaters May 25 from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures. I recently sat down with the film’s director Brad Parker. We talked about his transition from the world of special effects (Fight Club, Let Me In) to directing Diaries. We also talk about the challenges of blocking set pieces on a budget and the improvisational nature of the performances (even though the film isn’t found footage, it has a verite style). READ MORE

[Interview] Oren Peli On Extreme Tourism, Hiring Brad Parker And Writing The ‘Chernobyl Diaries’

Chernobyl Diaries, the Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Witten-produced horror survival film, opens in theaters May 25 from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures. I recently sat down with Peli (who was also a writer on the film) to discuss how he came up with the idea, what some of the challenges of filming were and to get a few nugets of information on Paranormal Activity 4. At least I tried to get a few nuggets of PA4 info. Peli’s become quite the expert on not giving anything away lately. So I had to settle for strict Chernobyl info – which isn’t so bad! READ MORE
