MotteIsland

In ‘Motte Island’ You Can Beat Down Giant Moths With Baseball Bats

I hate moths. They’re ugly butterflies — I’m not being mean, they know this — and that makes them bitter. That’s why every time I go outside, without fail, one dive-bombs me. If I were able to speak Moth, I’d probably hear its desperate pleas for me to smash its ugly ass into the ground so as to put it out of its misery.

Thankfully, there’s an indie developer out there who seems to feel the same way about Moths as I do. They’re called One Aperture, and their debut game is an atmospheric top-down isometric survival horror game (that’s a mouthful) called Motte Island. It’s still very much a work in progress, but it looks fun and moderately creepy. See it in action after the break.

NEW ‘The Evil Within’ Footage Leaks Out, Watch It Before It’s Taken Down! [UPDATE]

Update: It’s gone now.

This video probably won’t stay up for too long, so I suggest checking it out before Bethesda tears the video down. Youtuber GammersStyle has posted a video recorded during one of the behind-closed-doors press showings of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within. The only gameplay we’ve seen so far has revolved around Sebastian’s trying to escape from a chainsaw-wielding maniac — this video has all new footage, including a bloody hall scene that’s more than a little reminiscent of The Shining and a brief look at that bloody four-armed boss lady.

It’s shoddily recorded and the cameraman has a nasty habit of only capturing the top half of the screen, but don’t let that keep you from enjoying a brief sneak peak of this crazy exciting next-gen horror game.

Artist Creates Mario Levels Out Of Real Animal Skulls

Tobias Wüstefeld is a designer who loves himself some Mario. In fact, he loves that colorful series so much he decided he’d show his affection crafting Mario themed levels and slapping them on a couple of real animal skulls. These two beauties were made for the We Love 8 Bit show in Vienna, Austria earlier this month. If you’re bummed you missed them, don’t be, because all you need to do is read on for lots of big, pretty pictures.

Here’s Another Nightmarish Trailer For ‘Asylum’

Apparently, I’m a few weeks behind on this trailer, so I’m going to go ahead and blame E3 for my tardiness.

From Agustín Cordes, the maker of Scratches, Asylum is an psychological horror game inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Cordes and developer Senscape are working hard to bring players a terrifying game that’s set in an abandoned asylum. The building itself is being touted as one of the biggest virtual buildings ever created for a video game, with over 100 rooms to explore and around 15 hours of gameplay. I’m psyched.

Ten Minutes Of Glorious Thievery From New ‘Thief’ Reboot

Of the many games that were shown off at E3 last week, for me, Thief is one of the more exciting ones. It just looks so damn good. I’m not even terribly good at — read: really, really bad — or a huge fan of the stealth genre, though games like Dishonored and Splinter Cell are slowly changing that.

Thief looks gorgeous, and I’ve enjoyed some of the supernatural horror elements in previous games (the Shalebridge Cradle from Deadly Shadows was intense). I think they may have replaced most, if not all, of that with gritty realism in this next installment, but even still, it looks fantastic. At E3, Square Enix showed off ten wonderful minutes from the the upcoming game, which you can enjoy after the break.

Looks Like Next-Gen Games Will Still Cost $60

It’s official, the price of your average retail game for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U will continue to carry the now standard price tag of $60. Microsoft has confirmed with GameSpot that, contrary to some rumors, the price of Xbox One games — not including special, limited, or collector’s editions — will not increase. When the PlayStation 4 was revealed last week, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America Jack Tretton mirrored that by confirming the price of PS4 games will range from $.99 to $60.

This is good news. Even though the cost of developing games continue to grow — unnecessarily, I might add — at least consumers won’t have to shell out an extra $10-20 for games that are already somewhat pricey.

‘State Of Decay’ Sells Over Half A Million Copies, Patch Fix Coming Soon

Today, developer Undead Labs revealed a bit of exciting news about their ambitious open-world zombie survival game State of Decay, which recently passed the half a million sold milestone on XBLA. That’s a mighty impressive number, especially so for an indie game with little marketing.

This success all but guarantees we’ll be seeing more of that mysterious follow-up project, code-named Class4, but not before they bring State of Decay to Steam and add a “pure sandbox mode” in the near future (possibly with added co-op, too).

How Does 20 Stunning Minutes Of ‘Killzone: Shadow Fall’ Sound?

Right now, the Hellghast are polishing up their goggles so they’re super bright just in time for Killzone: Shadow Fall, coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4 when it launches this fall. We’ve seen a decent amount of the game so far, but today, Sony released 20 minutes of sweet, Killzone whoopassery for our viewing pleasure.

Unlike other shooters, Shadow Fall isn’t solely comprised of browns and greys. It’s actually colorful. I like that. Check it out after the jump.

[Indie Horror Spotlight] ‘Dark Cell’ Is The Scariest Prison Game Ever

In this episode of Indie Horror Spotlight, I go to jail!

Never before has a video game’s title more aptly described what the game itself entails. In Dark Cell, you’re exploring an insanely dark prison. I suppose the decision to shy away from a little lighting was made to hide the creepy robot ghost monster that lurks inside its pitch black halls, waiting for an unsuspecting inmate to walk by so it can lunge from the shadows and do whatever it is robot ghost monsters do with their prey. Watch me play Dark Cell after the break!

‘Dead Space 4′ Not Coming Any Time Soon

In an interview with Eurogamer last week, EA Games Label executive VP Patrick Söderlund confirmed that Dead Space 4 is not in development, and that Visceral Games — the team behind the first three games — are currently hard at work on something that’s “very exciting.” “Dead Space remains a brand that is close to Electronic Arts’ heart. It’s been a great brand for us done by a very passionate team.” Söderlund told Eurogamer.

“Will there be another Dead Space game? Who knows? Have we killed it? No, of course not. But right now that dev team is focused on something else that you and other gamers will be very happy with.” So no new Dead Space in the near future. It’s disappointing, but certainly not all that surprising. What would you like to see from a new Dead Space? Is it time for a reboot?

‘Left 4 Dead 3′ Spotted In SteamWorks Database

If you’re a fan of Valve’s games — and really, how could you not be — you’re probably all-too-familiar with the company’s seeming inability to reach the number 3. With no third entry in the Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, or Portal series (I know, that last one isn’t completely fair) in sight, it’s almost as if Valve has something against trilogies. That may soon change.

A sleuthy developer may have stumbled across something that might hint at an in-development Left 4 Dead 3. The dev, who has since been banned for violating Steam’s Terms of Use, but not before he found the game listed in the SteamWorks database. “I brute forced it in a way, there were lots of interesting things I found. L4D3 was the most interesting although it hasn’t been updated in months so it may be dead.” More after the break.

8 Horror Games We Missed At E3!

If you’re a gamer, you’re undoubtedly already fully aware of how stupefyingly awesome last week was. If you’re not a gamer, than let me take a second to fill you in. Last week, nearly every video game company in the country migrated to Los Angeles so they could spend a few days blowing our minds.

They did this by showing off new hardware — including a saucy battle between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 — and announcing tons of exciting new games. Among these big reveals were a myriad horror games, both from indie developers and high profile publishers, that all look absolutely terrifying. Unfortunately, even though we saw from the likes of Daylight, Outlast, Dying Light and Dead Rising 3 — there were still many highly anticipated games that didn’t make an appearance.

After the break I have eight horror games I really wanted to see more from last week, but didn’t. Check them out, and let me know what I missed in the comments!

Thankfully, Undead Labs is addressing, and fixing, many of these issues in a patch. Full list of fixes after the jump.

[Saturday Morning Cartoon] ‘The Backwater Gospel’ Is Like Nothing You’ve Ever Seen

I’ve hijacked Mr. Disgusting’s series! Why? Because I freaking love cartoons.

Today I have a pretty spectacular one for you. It’s called The Backwater Gospel, and between its twisted story and stunning art style, this is easily one of the coolest animated shorts I’ve ever watched. I’d describe it to you, but I feel like I should leave that up to the intensely talented folks who crafted it: “As long as anyone can remember, the coming of The Undertaker has meant the coming of death. Until one day the grim promise fails and tension builds as the God fearing townsfolk of Backwater wait for someone to die.’

Have I got you properly intrigued? Good. Watch it after the break!

‘Kingdom Hearts III’ Coming To PS4 And Xbox One

A few very special readers have pointed out a glaring omission in our E3 coverage. Earlier this week, Square Enix and Disney revealed their latest collaboration, the long requested Kingdom Hearts III. It was perhaps one of the more surprising reveals that came out of Sony’s media briefing, and that’s saying something. Kingdom Hearts III launches on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but we probably won’t be seeing it for some time.

After the announcement, director Tetsuya Nomura said he felt they revealed the game “too early,” based on where it is in development right now, but they made the decision to show it due to growing pressure from fans. “Many fans were feeling impatient due to our continuous releases of spin-off titles, so we decided to announce it at the same time as Final Fantasy XV.” Trailer after the jump.

‘The Dead Linger’ Isn’t Just Another Zombie Game

Okay, yes, in a way, The Dead Linger is another zombie game. It has zombies, and your goal is to survive against them by scavenging for supplies, fortifying safe areas, and beating the unfortunate ones who come a little too close with whatever blunt instrument you have at hand.

In a new featurette, developer Sandswept Studios sheds light on the world, combat and crafting system. It’s still rough (the game is in alpha now), but the potential is definitely there. I’m especially fond of the Minecraft-like building and fortification system. For example, you can build forts and barricades out of the wood you collect from the trees you cut down. Just hold a plank of wood against an object and hammer it in. More after the break.

There’s Something Keeping ‘DayZ’ From Coming To The Xbox One

Apparently, the only thing that’s keeping DayZ lead designer Dean Hall’s survival game from coming to the Xbox One is Microsoft’s self-publishing restriction, which keeps indie developers from being able to get their games on the console without the aid of a publisher. On top of this, Microsoft charges a hefty fee for developers to update their games once they’re live. Most indie devs are strapped for cash as it is, so many can’t afford paying five figure fees to patch their games. This caused some controversy for Microsoft when Fez developer Phil Fish refused to pay Microsoft $40,000 to fix a critical bug in his game.

It’s worth mentioning that Sony’s PlayStation 4 has no such restrictions, making it a more welcoming platform for indie devs looking to get their games out to the public. More on DayZ’s possible arrival on the Xbox One after the jump.

E3 Is Over! Here’s Everything That Happened

First off, is the above banner confusing? I mean, it’s supposed to be a cowboyified E3 riding off into the sunset, because, ya know, E3 is over. The problem is if that’s the case, then why is the logo facing us? Is it riding on the horse backwards? I guess there are questions we’ll never have answers to, and that’s one of them.

Anyway, E3 is done. It officially ended yesterday — I’m sure you noticed the gradual decrease in news — and since it’s now Friday, that means we have a little less than a year before next year’s event. Because June 10-12, 2014 is really far away, you may be wondering what you’re going to do to keep busy for the next 361 days. Fear not, I have you covered. Russia Gets Invaded In The Retro-Futuristic Indie Horror Game ‘Frozen State’

Frozen State is an indie horror game in development at Moscow-based Snow Arc Studio. It’s still in the early stages of production, but even still, it looks incredibly promising. The developer is taking inspirations from classic games and film, including The Thing, Fallout, Resident Evil, and The Road — all of which look to be translating well to its post-apocalyptic, monster-infested Siberian wasteland.

They’re focus is on crafting an atmospheric survival horror game where the decisions you make affect the world around you. Frozen State is set in a partially destroyed, and very much secret, Soviet city that’s been overrun by intelligent and vicious alien creatures. More after the break!
