New to Blu – Week of 7/18/2017

New to Blu-ray

Each week here at Bloody Disgusting we like to highlight some of the new Blu-ray releases hitting shelves across the world. Please note that this isn’t every release for the week, just a few of the ones that jumped out at us.

July keeps pushing out the big releases! This week we’ve got Kong: Skull Island and Free Fire leading the way. The quantity is limited, but the quality is there. While Skull Island and Free Fire are the big names ones, there’s plenty of smaller gems to pick up. The Night of the Sorcerers/The Loreley’s Grasp double feature and Stormy Monday lead that smaller crop. It’s a good time to be a fan of genre cinema!

US Releases

Resident Evil: Vendetta (Sony, Region A)

Synopsis:
BSAA Chris Redfield enlists the help of government agent Leon S. Kennedy and Professor Rebecca Chambers from Alexander Institute of Biotechnology to stop a death merchant with a vengeance from spreading a deadly virus in New York.

The Night of the Sorcerers/The Loreley’s Grasp (Scream Factory, Region A)

The Night of the Sorcerers
A group of explorers arrive in Africa to study the wildlife in the same area where a brutal native ritual occurred in 1910. All is tranquil until night falls and distant drumming draws one of the female members of the group to investigate the jungle. From there, a nightmare will be awakened … a nightmare of zombie natives and scantily-clad vampire women who prowl the moonlight jungle in search of fresh blood and more victims to sacrifice. Starring Simón Andreu, Kali Hansa, and María Kosty.

The Loreley’s Grasp
The legendary Loreley has been living for centuries in a grotto beneath the river Rhein in Germany. Every night when the moon is full, she turns into a reptile-like creature craving for human blood. When one girl after another of a nearby boarding school is killed by her, a hunter named Sirgurd is engaged to kill the monster…

Kong: Skull Island (Warner Bros, Region A)

Synopsis:
In 1971 a team of explorers and soldiers travel to an uncharted island in the Pacific, unaware that they are crossing into the domain of monsters, including the mythic Kong.

Free Fire (Lionsgate, Region A)

Synopsis:
Set in Boston in 1978, a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs turns into a shootout and a game of survival.

Stormy Monday (Arrow, Region A)

Synopsis:
Brendan takes a job as janitor for Finney, who runs a jazz nightclub in the Northern English city of Newcastle. But Finney is being pressured to sell his club, and Brendan soon provides non-janitorial services to Finney. Soon his rival’s American boss Cosmo comes to town, while Brendan begins to fall in love with Kate, an escort working for Cosmo.

The Bat People (Scream Factory, Region A)

Synopsis:
When Dr. John Beck and his wife Cathy fall into an underground cave, a huge bat attacks them, biting the good doctor. Thinking it’s only a scratch, Beck avoids treatment, and soon wakes to find himself transformed into a horrifying man-bat creature! Now one with the night, Beck embarks on a killing spree to conceal what he’s become, and he won’t stop until he once again has the one thing his new existence is missing…his beautiful wife!

Blood Alley (Warner Archive, Region A)

Synopsis:
“Powder your nose, baby,” the craggy-voiced skipper bellows. “We’re coming into Hong Kong.” Getting there wasn’t easy for wily Merchant Marine Captain Tom Wilder.
