Netflix Bites Into Alex Aja’s ‘Piranha’

Haute Tension, The Hills Have Eyes and Mirrors director Alexandre Aja‘s insanely gory Piranha remake (originally released in 3-D) is now streaming on Netflix.

In the 2010 reboot of Joe Dante’s cult classic, “When an earthquake rips open the bottom of Lake Victoria, a bloodbath ensues as schools of carnivorous piranhas are released from their aquatic lair.

The cast included Elisabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, Jessica Szohr, Steven R. McQueen, Dina Meyer, Ricardo Chavira, and Kelly Brook.

I wrote in my review: “Delivering all sorts of bloody goodness, Piranha is Alex Aja’s best film since High Tension… It’s damn fun, and off the hook bloody. If anything, the spring break summer massacre sequence will go down in infamy as one of the most awesome and insane horror moments of all time.”

Unfortunately, the John Gulager-directed sequel, Piranha 3DD, isn’t available.

I love Aja but Piranha was just OK, I still can’t figure out what’s the thing I don’t like about it. I really wanted to love it but I couldn’t, I found a weak story, weak effects, weak script. Perhaps the 3D thing killed it, not sure

    • Matt Miller

It’s weak in those aspects but its self awareness, humor, tension and ridiculously creative gory set pieces made it work for me. Aja directed the shit out of every killing scene.

I LOVD Piranha 3D! it was EVERYTHING!

  • MrX13

Best movie I saw in 3D! Aja did a badass job with Piranha, one of my all time favorites!

  • Baron Von Marlon

Great flick. We need more little creatures features.

  • Christopher Nickerson

Piranha 3D is great as long as you don’t see it in 3D. I saw it in theaters and it was only showing in 3D by the end of the movie I was literally vomiting from my eyes not being able to focus on anything. That was where I learned I can’t do 3D. Unfortunately the sequel is God awful

  • Jeff Eastwood

Piranha 3D and Severance (British film from 2006) are the perfect examples of what a Horror/Comedy should be.

  • Grimphantom

A nice better attempt for a remake than what we have seen from others…..too bad the sequel was horrible.

  • Mike tantatelli

I thought this was a fun movie. Gory as hell!

  • J Jett

Never got a chance to see this so I’m excited Netflix picked it up. LOVED his Hills Have Eyes so this should be a treat.
