James McAvoy Goes a Little Mad in These Images From M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Split’

ANYA TAYLOR-JOY as Casey Cooke in "Split." Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan returns to the captivating grip of "The Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable," and "Signs" with this original film that delves into the mysterious recesses of one man's (James McAvoy) fractured, gifted mind.

Here’s a handful of brand new images from the psychological thriller Split (read our review), which gives us a look at Kevin’s 23 distinct personalities…with the 24th being the one we should be worried about.

In the film, opening in theaters January 20, 2017, The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy is kidnapped (along with two of her friends) by James McAvoy. Here’s the kicker… there may or may not be a monster. If there is, it might just be McAvoy who physically transforms into one; it’s like a new kind of werewolf movie with a taste of “Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”.

Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula and Haley Lu Richardson also star in Split, which Trace Thurman reviewed after its secret screening at this past September’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. He explains that, “Like many of [Shyamalan’s) films, it will no doubt split (sorry) audiences, but McAvoy’s performance alone earns the film a full recommendation. He is a marvel to behold.

Here’s the full plot crunch:

While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

Dead Mail SXSW Dead Mail interview

One of the genre films we’re looking forward to checking out at SXSW this year is Dead Mail, written and directed by Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy and premiering on March 9.

Meagan Navarro will be reviewing Dead Mail for Bloody Disgusting as part of her SXSW coverage, and she writes in her preview for the upcoming fest: “Dead Mail leans heavily into the ’80s analog aesthetic, delivering a unique crime thriller unafraid to get offbeat with its dark narrative. Expect its characters to be as atypical as Dead Mail‘s sense of style.”

In the SXSW 2024 horror film…

“On a desolate, Midwestern county road, a bound man crawls towards a remote postal box, managing to slide a blood-stained plea-for-help message into the slot before a panicking figure closes in behind him. The note makes its way to the county post office and onto the desk of Jasper, a seasoned and skilled “dead letter” investigator, responsible for investigating lost mail and returning it to its sender. As he investigates further, Jasper meets Trent, a strange yet unassuming man who has taken up residence at the men’s home where Jasper lives.

“When Trent unexpectedly shows up at Jasper’s office, it becomes clear he has a vested interest in the note, and will stop at nothing to retrieve it…”

Sterling Macer, Jr., John Fleck, Susan Priver, Micki Jackson, Tomas Boykin, and Nick Heyman star in Dead Mail. Preview the film with an exclusive image gallery below.
